Chapter 11
Out of Egypt I Called My Son

When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉
כִּ֛י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל נַ֥עַר וָאֹהֲבֵ֑הוּ וּמִמִּצְרַ֖יִם קָרָ֥אתִי לִבְנִֽי׃ kî yiś·rā·’êl na·‘ar wā·’ō·hă·ḇê·hū ū·mim·miṣ·ra·yim qā·rā·ṯî liḇ·nî — WLC · 1

But the more I called [Israel], the farther they departed from Me. They sacrificed to the Baals and burned incense to carved images.

קָרְא֖וּ לָהֶ֑ם כֵּ֚ן הָלְכ֣וּ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם יְזַבֵּ֔חוּ לַבְּעָלִ֣ים יְקַטֵּרֽוּן׃ וְלַפְּסִלִ֖ים qā·rə·’ū lā·hem kên hā·lə·ḵū mip·pə·nê·hem yə·zab·bê·ḥū lab·bə·‘ā·lîm yə·qaṭ·ṭê·rūn wə·lap·pə·si·lîm — WLC · 2

It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms, but they never realized that it was I who healed them.

וְאָנֹכִ֤י לְאֶפְרַ֔יִם תִרְגַּ֙לְתִּי֙ קָחָ֖ם עַל־ זְרֽוֹעֹתָ֑יו וְלֹ֥א יָדְע֖וּ כִּ֥י רְפָאתִֽים׃ wə·’ā·nō·ḵî lə·’ep̄·ra·yim ṯir·gal·tî qā·ḥām ‘al- zə·rō·w·‘ō·ṯāw wə·lō yā·ḏə·‘ū kî rə·p̄ā·ṯîm — WLC · 3

I led them with cords of kindness, with ropes of love; vvv vvv I lifted the yoke from their necks and bent down… to feed them.

אֶמְשְׁכֵם֙ בְּחַבְלֵ֨י אָדָ֤ם בַּעֲבֹת֣וֹת אַהֲבָ֔ה וָאֶהְיֶ֥ה לָהֶ֛ם כִּמְרִ֥ימֵי עֹ֖ל עַ֣ל לְחֵיהֶ֑ם וְאַ֥ט אֵלָ֖יו אוֹכִֽיל׃ ’em·šə·ḵêm bə·ḥaḇ·lê ’ā·ḏām ba·‘ă·ḇō·ṯō·wṯ ’a·hă·ḇāh wā·’eh·yeh lā·hem kim·rî·mê ‘ōl ‘al lə·ḥê·hem wə·’aṭ ’ê·lāw ’ō·w·ḵîl — WLC · 4

Will they not return to the land of Egypt and be ruled by Assyria… because they refused to repent?
𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤁
לֹ֤א יָשׁוּב֙ אֶל־ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם מַלְכּ֑וֹ וְאַשּׁ֖וּר ה֣וּא כִּ֥י מֵאֲנ֖וּ לָשֽׁוּב׃ lō yā·šūḇ ’el- ’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim mal·kōw wə·’aš·šūr hū kî mê·’ă·nū lā·šūḇ — WLC · 5

A sword will flash through their cities; it will destroy the bars of their gates and consume [them] in their own plans.

חֶ֙רֶב֙ וְחָלָ֥ה בְּעָרָ֔יו וְכִלְּתָ֥ה בַדָּ֖יו וְאָכָ֑לָה מִֽמֹּעֲצ֖וֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ ḥe·reḇ wə·ḥā·lāh bə·‘ā·rāw wə·ḵil·lə·ṯāh ḇad·dāw wə·’ā·ḵā·lāh mim·mō·‘ă·ṣō·w·ṯê·hem — WLC · 6

My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call to the Most High, He will by no means… exalt them.

וְעַמִּ֥י תְלוּאִ֖ים לִמְשֽׁוּבָתִ֑י יִקְרָאֻ֔הוּ וְאֶל־ עַל֙ לֹ֥א יַ֖חַד יְרוֹמֵם׃ wə·‘am·mî ṯə·lū·’îm lim·šū·ḇā·ṯî yiq·rā·’u·hū wə·’el- ‘al lō ya·ḥaḏ yə·rō·mēm — WLC · 7
God’s Love for Israel

How could I give you up, O Ephraim? How could I surrender you, O Israel? How could I make you like Admah? How could I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within Me My compassion is stirred!
𐤀𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤊 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤂𐤍𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤊 𐤊𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤊 𐤊𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤉 𐤍𐤄𐤐𐤊 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤇𐤃 𐤍𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤍𐤊𐤌𐤓𐤅
אֵ֞יךְ אֶתֶּנְךָ֣ אֶפְרַ֗יִם אֲמַגֶּנְךָ֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֵ֚יךְ אֶתֶּנְךָ֣ כְאַדְמָ֔ה אֲשִֽׂימְךָ֖ כִּצְבֹאיִ֑ם לִבִּ֔י נֶהְפַּ֤ךְ עָלַי֙ יַ֖חַד נִחוּמָֽי׃ נִכְמְר֥וּ ’êḵ ’et·ten·ḵā ’ep̄·ra·yim ’ă·mag·gen·ḵā yiś·rā·’êl ’êḵ ’et·ten·ḵā ḵə·’aḏ·māh ’ă·śî·mə·ḵā kiṣ·ḇō·yim lib·bî neh·paḵ ‘ā·lay ya·ḥaḏ ni·ḥū·māy niḵ·mə·rū — WLC · 8

I will not execute the full fury of My anger; I will not destroy Ephraim again. For I am God and not man— the Holy One among you— and I will not come in wrath.

לֹ֤א אֶֽעֱשֶׂה֙ חֲר֣וֹן אַפִּ֔י לֹ֥א לְשַׁחֵ֣ת אֶפְרָ֑יִם אָשׁ֖וּב כִּ֣י אָֽנֹכִי֙ אֵ֤ל וְלֹא־ אִ֔ישׁ קָד֔וֹשׁ בְּקִרְבְּךָ֣ וְלֹ֥א אָב֖וֹא בְּעִֽיר׃ lō ’e·‘ĕ·śeh ḥă·rō·wn ’ap·pî lō lə·ša·ḥêṯ ’ep̄·rā·yim ’ā·šūḇ kî ’ā·nō·ḵî ’êl wə·lō- ’îš qā·ḏō·wōš bə·qir·bə·ḵā wə·lō ’ā·ḇō·w bə·‘îr — WLC · 9

They will walk after… the LORD; He will roar like a lion. When He roars, His children will come trembling from the west.

אַחֲרֵ֧י יֵלְכ֖וּ יְהוָ֛ה יִשְׁאָ֑ג כְּאַרְיֵ֣ה כִּֽי־ ה֣וּא יִשְׁאַ֔ג בָנִ֖ים וְיֶחֶרְד֥וּ מִיָּֽם׃ ’a·ḥă·rê yê·lə·ḵū Yah·weh yiš·’āḡ kə·’ar·yêh kî- hū yiš·’aḡ ḇā·nîm wə·ye·ḥer·ḏū mî·yām — WLC · 10

They will come trembling like birds from Egypt and like doves from the land of Assyria. Then I will settle them in their homes, declares the LORD.
𐤉𐤇𐤓𐤃𐤅 𐤊𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎
יֶחֶרְד֤וּ כְצִפּוֹר֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וּכְיוֹנָ֖ה מֵאֶ֣רֶץ אַשּׁ֑וּר וְהוֹשַׁבְתִּ֥ים עַל־ בָּתֵּיהֶ֖ם נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ס ye·ḥer·ḏū ḵə·ṣip·pō·wr mim·miṣ·ra·yim ū·ḵə·yō·w·nāh mê·’e·reṣ ’aš·šūr wə·hō·wō·šaḇ·tîm ‘al- bāt·tê·hem nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 11

Ephraim surrounds Me with lies, the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah still walks with God [and is] faithful to the Holy One.

אֶפְרַ֔יִם סְבָבֻ֤נִי בְכַ֙חַשׁ֙ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּבְמִרְמָ֖ה וִֽיהוּדָ֗ה עֹ֥ד רָד֙ עִם־ אֵ֔ל נֶאֱמָֽן׃ וְעִם־ קְדוֹשִׁ֖ים ’ep̄·ra·yim sə·ḇā·ḇu·nî ḇə·ḵa·ḥaš bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ū·ḇə·mir·māh wî·hū·ḏāh ‘ōḏ rāḏ ‘im- ’êl ne·’ĕ·mān wə·‘im- qə·ḏō·wō·šîm — WLC · 12
