Chapter 14
A Call to Repentance

Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God, for you have stumbled by your iniquity.

שׁ֚וּבָה יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַ֖ד יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ כִּ֥י כָשַׁ֖לְתָּ בַּעֲוֺנֶֽךָ׃ šû·b̲āh yiś·rā·’êl ‘aḏ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā kî ḵā·šal·tā ba·‘ă·wō·ne·ḵā — WLC · 1

Bring your confessions and return to the LORD. Say to Him: “Take away all our iniquity and receive [us] graciously, that we may present the fruit of our lips.

קְח֤וּ עִמָּכֶם֙ דְּבָרִ֔ים וְשׁ֖וּבוּ אֶל־ יְהוָ֑ה אִמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו תִּשָּׂ֤א כָּל־ עָוֺן֙ וְקַח־ ט֔וֹב וּֽנְשַׁלְּמָ֥ה פָרִ֖ים שְׂפָתֵֽינוּ׃ qə·ḥū ‘im·mā·ḵem də·ḇā·rîm wə·šū·ḇū ’el- Yah·weh ’im·rū ’ê·lāw tiś·śā kāl- ‘ā·wōn wə·qaḥ- ṭō·wḇ ū·nə·šal·lə·māh p̄ā·rîm śə·p̄ā·ṯê·nū — WLC · 2

Assyria will not save us, nor will we ride on horses. We will never again… say, ‘Our gods!’ to the work of our own hands. For in You the fatherless find compassion.”

אַשּׁ֣וּר׀ לֹ֣א יוֹשִׁיעֵ֗נוּ לֹ֣א נִרְכָּ֔ב עַל־ סוּס֙ וְלֹא־ ע֛וֹד נֹ֥אמַר אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ לְמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יָדֵ֑ינוּ אֲשֶׁר־ בְּךָ֖ יָתֽוֹם׃ יְרֻחַ֥ם ’aš·šūr lō yō·wō·šî·‘ê·nū lō nir·kāḇ ‘al- sūs wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ nō·mar ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū lə·ma·‘ă·śêh yā·ḏê·nū ’ă·šer- bə·ḵā yā·ṯō·wm yə·ru·ḥam — WLC · 3
A Promise of God’s Blessing

I will heal their apostasy; I will freely love them, for My anger has turned away from them.

אֶרְפָּא֙ מְשׁ֣וּבָתָ֔ם נְדָבָ֑ה אֹהֲבֵ֖ם כִּ֛י אַפִּ֖י שָׁ֥ב מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ ’er·pā mə·šū·ḇā·ṯām nə·ḏā·ḇāh ’ō·hă·ḇêm kî ’ap·pî šāḇ mim·men·nū — WLC · 4

I will be like the dew to Israel; he will blossom like the lily and take root like the cedars of Lebanon.

אֶהְיֶ֤ה כַטַּל֙ לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל יִפְרַ֖ח כַּשּֽׁוֹשַׁנָּ֑ה וְיַ֥ךְ שָׁרָשָׁ֖יו כַּלְּבָנֽוֹן׃ ’eh·yeh ḵaṭ·ṭal lə·yiś·rā·’êl yip̄·raḥ kaš·šō·wō·šan·nāh wə·yaḵ šā·rā·šāw kal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn — WLC · 5

His shoots will sprout, and his splendor will be like the olive tree, his fragrance like [the cedars of] Lebanon.

יֹֽנְקוֹתָ֔יו יֵֽלְכוּ֙ הוֹד֑וֹ וִיהִ֥י כַזַּ֖יִת וְרֵ֥יחַֽ ל֖וֹ כַּלְּבָנֽוֹן׃ yō·nə·qō·w·ṯāw yê·lə·ḵū hō·w·ḏōw wî·hî ḵaz·za·yiṯ wə·rê·aḥ lōw kal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn — WLC · 6

They will return and dwell in his shade; they will grow grain and blossom like the vine. His renown will be like the wine of Lebanon.

יָשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ יֹשְׁבֵ֣י בְצִלּ֔וֹ יְחַיּ֥וּ דָגָ֖ן וְיִפְרְח֣וּ כַגָּ֑פֶן זִכְר֖וֹ כְּיֵ֥ין לְבָנֽוֹן׃ס yā·šu·ḇū yō·šə·ḇê ḇə·ṣil·lōw yə·ḥay·yū ḏā·ḡān wə·yip̄·rə·ḥū ḵag·gā·p̄en ziḵ·rōw kə·yên lə·ḇā·nō·wn — WLC · 7

O Ephraim, what have I to do anymore with idols? It is I who answer and watch over him. I [am] like a flourishing cypress; your fruit comes from Me.

אֶפְרַ֕יִם מַה־ לִּ֥י ע֖וֹד לָֽעֲצַבִּ֑ים אֲנִ֧י עָנִ֣יתִי וַאֲשׁוּרֶ֗נּוּ אֲנִי֙ רַֽעֲנָ֔ן כִּבְר֣וֹשׁ פֶּרְיְךָ֥ נִמְצָֽא׃ מִמֶּ֖נִּי ’ep̄·ra·yim mah- lî ‘ō·wḏ lā·‘ă·ṣab·bîm ’ă·nî ‘ā·nî·ṯî wa·’ă·šū·ren·nū ’ă·nî ra·‘ă·nān kiḇ·rō·wōš per·yə·ḵā nim·ṣā mim·men·nî — WLC · 8

Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; [whoever] is discerning, let him know them. For the ways of the LORD are right, and the righteous walk in them but the rebellious stumble in them.

מִ֤י חָכָם֙ וְיָ֣בֵֽן אֵ֔לֶּה נָב֖וֹן וְיֵֽדָעֵ֑ם כִּֽי־ דַּרְכֵ֣י יְהוָ֗ה יְשָׁרִ֞ים וְצַדִּקִים֙ יֵ֣לְכוּ בָ֔ם וּפֹשְׁעִ֖ים יִכָּ֥שְׁלוּ בָֽם׃ mî ḥā·ḵām wə·yā·ḇên ’êl·leh nā·ḇō·wn wə·yê·ḏā·‘êm kî- dar·ḵê Yah·weh yə·šā·rîm wə·ṣad·di·qîm yê·lə·ḵū ḇām ū·p̄ō·šə·‘îm yik·kā·šə·lū ḇām — WLC · 9
