Chapter 7

Ephraim’s Iniquity

1

When I heal Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim will be exposed, as well as the crimes of Samaria. For they practice deceit and thieves break in; bandits raid in the streets.

𐤊𐤓𐤐𐤀𐤉 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤓𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤔𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤂𐤍𐤁 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤐𐤔𐤈 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤑

כְּרָפְאִ֣י לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל עֲוֺ֤ן אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ וְנִגְלָ֞ה וְרָע֣וֹת שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן כִּ֥י פָעֲל֖וּ שָׁ֑קֶר וְגַנָּ֣ב יָב֔וֹא גְּד֖וּד פָּשַׁ֥ט בַּחֽוּץ׃ kə·rā·p̄ə·’î lə·yiś·rā·’êl ‘ă·wōn ’ep̄·ra·yim wə·niḡ·lāh wə·rā·‘ō·wṯ šō·mə·rō·wn kî p̄ā·‘ă·lū šā·qer wə·ḡan·nāḇ yā·ḇō·w gə·ḏūḏ pā·šaṭ ba·ḥūṣWLC · 1

But they fail to consider in their hearts that I remember all their evil. Now their deeds are all around them; they are before My face.

𐤅𐤁𐤋 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤌 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤎𐤁𐤁𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤍𐤂𐤃 𐤐𐤍𐤉

וּבַל־ יֹֽאמְרוּ֙ לִלְבָבָ֔ם זָכָ֑רְתִּי כָּל־ רָעָתָ֖ם עַתָּה֙ מַֽעַלְלֵיהֶ֔ם סְבָב֣וּם הָיֽוּ׃ נֶ֥גֶד פָּנַ֖י ū·ḇal- yō·mə·rū lil·ḇā·ḇām zā·ḵā·rə·tî kāl- rā·‘ā·ṯām ‘at·tāh ma·‘al·lê·hem sə·ḇā·ḇūm hā·yū ne·ḡeḏ pā·nayWLC · 2

They delight the king with their evil, and the princes with their lies.

𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤓𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤇𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤌

יְשַׂמְּחוּ־ מֶ֑לֶךְ בְּרָעָתָ֖ם שָׂרִֽים׃ וּבְכַחֲשֵׁיהֶ֖ם yə·śam·mə·ḥū- me·leḵ bə·rā·‘ā·ṯām śā·rîm ū·ḇə·ḵa·ḥă·šê·hemWLC · 3

They are all adulterers, like an oven heated by a baker who needs not stoke the fire from the kneading to the rising of the dough.

𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤍𐤀𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤌𐤅 𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤐𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤅𐤔 𐤏𐤃 𐤇𐤌𐤑𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤑𐤒

כֻּלָּם֙ מְנָ֣אֲפִ֔ים כְּמ֣וֹ תַנּ֔וּר בֹּעֵ֖רָה מֵֽאֹפֶ֑ה יִשְׁבּ֣וֹת מֵעִ֔יר מִלּ֥וּשׁ עַד־ חֻמְצָתֽוֹ׃ בָּצֵ֖ק kul·lām mə·nā·’ă·p̄îm kə·mōw ṯan·nūr bō·‘ê·rāh mê·’ō·p̄eh yiš·bō·wṯ mê·‘îr mil·lūš ‘aḏ- ḥum·ṣā·ṯōw bā·ṣêqWLC · 4

The princes are inflamed… with wine on the day of our king; so he joins hands… with those who mock him.

שָׂרִ֖ים הֶחֱל֥וּ חֲמַ֣ת מִיָּ֑יִן י֣וֹם מַלְכֵּ֔נוּ מָשַׁ֥ךְ יָד֖וֹ אֶת־ לֹצְצִֽים׃ śā·rîm he·ḥĕ·lū ḥă·maṯ mî·yā·yin yō·wm mal·kê·nū mā·šaḵ yā·ḏōw ’eṯ- lō·ṣə·ṣîmWLC · 5

For they prepare their heart like an oven while they lie in wait; all night their anger smolders; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.

𐤊𐤉 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤊𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤐𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤍 𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤏𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤄 𐤊𐤀𐤔

כִּֽי־ קֵרְב֧וּ לִבָּ֖ם כַתַּנּ֛וּר בְּאָרְבָּ֑ם כָּל־ הַלַּ֙יְלָה֙ אֹֽפֵהֶ֔ם יָשֵׁ֣ן בֹּ֕קֶר ה֥וּא בֹעֵ֖ר לֶהָבָֽה׃ כְּאֵ֥שׁ kî- qê·rə·ḇū lib·bām ḵat·tan·nūr bə·’ā·rə·bām kāl- hal·lay·lāh ’ō·p̄ê·hem yā·šên bō·qer hū ḇō·‘êr le·hā·ḇāh kə·’êšWLC · 6

All of them are hot as an oven, and they devour their rulers. All their kings fall; not one of them calls upon Me.

כֻּלָּ֤ם יֵחַ֙מּוּ֙ כַּתַּנּ֔וּר וְאָכְל֖וּ אֶת־ שֹֽׁפְטֵיהֶ֑ם כָּל־ מַלְכֵיהֶ֣ם נָפָ֔לוּ אֵין־ בָהֶ֖ם קֹרֵ֥א אֵלָֽי׃ kul·lām yê·ḥam·mū kat·tan·nūr wə·’ā·ḵə·lū ’eṯ- šō·p̄ə·ṭê·hem kāl- mal·ḵê·hem nā·p̄ā·lū ’ên- ḇā·hem qō·rê ’ê·lāyWLC · 7

אֶפְרַ֕יִם ה֣וּא יִתְבּוֹלָ֑ל בָּעַמִּ֖ים אֶפְרַ֛יִם הָיָ֥ה בְּלִ֥י הֲפוּכָֽה׃ עֻגָ֖ה ’ep̄·ra·yim hū yiṯ·bō·w·lāl bā·‘am·mîm ’ep̄·ra·yim hā·yāh bə·lî hă·p̄ū·ḵāh ‘u·ḡāhWLC · 8

Foreigners consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is streaked with gray, but he does not know.

זָרִים֙ אָכְל֤וּ כֹּח֔וֹ וְה֖וּא לֹ֣א יָדָ֑ע גַּם־ זָ֣רְקָה בּ֔וֹ שֵׂיבָה֙ וְה֖וּא לֹ֥א יָדָֽע׃ zā·rîm ’ā·ḵə·lū kō·ḥōw wə·hū lō yā·ḏā‘ gam- zā·rə·qāh bōw śê·ḇāh wə·hū lō yā·ḏā‘WLC · 9

Israel’s arrogance testifies against them, yet they do not return to the LORD their God; despite all this, they do not seek Him.

𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤄𐤅

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל גְאֽוֹן־ וְעָנָ֥ה בְּפָנָ֑יו וְלֹֽא־ שָׁ֙בוּ֙ אֶל־ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֔ם בְּכָל־ זֹֽאת׃ וְלֹ֥א בִקְשֻׁ֖הוּ yiś·rā·’êl ḡə·’ō·wn- wə·‘ā·nāh bə·p̄ā·nāw wə·lō- šā·ḇū ’el- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·hem bə·ḵāl zōṯ wə·lō ḇiq·šu·hūWLC · 10

So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless… dove— calling out to Egypt, then turning to Assyria.

אֶפְרַ֔יִם וַיְהִ֣י פוֹתָ֖ה אֵ֣ין לֵ֑ב כְּיוֹנָ֥ה קָרָ֖אוּ מִצְרַ֥יִם הָלָֽכוּ׃ אַשּׁ֥וּר ’ep̄·ra·yim way·hî p̄ō·w·ṯāh ’ên lêḇ kə·yō·w·nāh qā·rā·’ū miṣ·ra·yim hā·lā·ḵū ’aš·šūrWLC · 11

As they go, I will spread My net over them; I will bring them down like birds of the air. I will chastise them when I hear them flocking together.

כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יֵלֵ֗כוּ אֶפְר֤וֹשׂ רִשְׁתִּ֔י עֲלֵיהֶם֙ אֽוֹרִידֵ֑ם כְּע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם אַיְסִרֵ֕ם כְּשֵׁ֖מַע לַעֲדָתָֽם׃ס ka·’ă·šer yê·lê·ḵū ’ep̄·rō·wś riš·tî ‘ă·lê·hem ’ō·w·rî·ḏêm kə·‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim ’ay·si·rêm kə·šê·ma‘ la·‘ă·ḏā·ṯāmWLC · 12

Woe to them, for they have strayed from Me! Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against Me! Though I would redeem them,… they speak lies against Me.

א֤וֹי לָהֶם֙ כִּֽי־ נָדְד֣וּ מִמֶּ֔נִּי שֹׁ֥ד לָהֶ֖ם כִּֽי־ פָ֣שְׁעוּ בִ֑י וְאָנֹכִ֣י אֶפְדֵּ֔ם וְהֵ֕מָּה דִּבְּר֥וּ כְּזָבִֽים׃ עָלַ֖י ’ō·w lā·hem kî- nā·ḏə·ḏū mim·men·nî šōḏ lā·hem kî- p̄ā·šə·‘ū ḇî wə·’ā·nō·ḵî ’ep̄·dêm wə·hêm·māh dib·bə·rū kə·zā·ḇîm ‘ā·layWLC · 13

They do not cry out to Me from their hearts when they wail upon their beds. They slash themselves for grain and new wine, but turn away from Me.

𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤏𐤒𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤂𐤅𐤓𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤂𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤎𐤅𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤉

וְלֹֽא־ זָעֲק֤וּ אֵלַי֙ בְּלִבָּ֔ם כִּ֥י יְיֵלִ֖ילוּ עַל־ מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָ֑ם יִתְגּוֹרָ֖רוּ עַל־ דָּגָ֧ן וְתִיר֛וֹשׁ יָס֥וּרוּ בִֽי׃ wə·lō- zā·‘ă·qū ’ê·lay bə·lib·bām kî yə·yê·lî·lū ‘al- miš·kə·ḇō·w·ṯām yiṯ·gō·w·rā·rū ‘al- dā·ḡān wə·ṯî·rō·wōš yā·sū·rū ḇîWLC · 14

Although I trained and strengthened their arms, they plot evil against Me.

𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤎𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤕𐤉 𐤆𐤓𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤉

וַאֲנִ֣י יִסַּ֔רְתִּי חִזַּ֖קְתִּי זְרֽוֹעֹתָ֑ם יְחַשְּׁבוּ־ רָֽע׃ וְאֵלַ֖י wa·’ă·nî yis·sar·tî ḥiz·zaq·tî zə·rō·w·‘ō·ṯām yə·ḥaš·šə·ḇū- rā‘ wə·’ê·layWLC · 15

They turn, but not to the Most High; they are like a faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword for the cursing of their tongue; for this they will be ridiculed in the land of Egypt.
