Chapter 9

Israel’s Punishment

1

Do not rejoice, O Israel, with exultation like the nations, for you have played the harlot against your God; you have made love [for] hire on every threshing floor…

𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤇 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤉𐤋 𐤊𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤍 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤂𐤓𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤃𐤂𐤍

אַל־ תִּשְׂמַ֨ח יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל׀ אֶל־ גִּיל֙ כָּֽעַמִּ֔ים כִּ֥י זָנִ֖יתָ מֵעַ֣ל אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ אָהַ֣בְתָּ אֶתְנָ֔ן עַ֖ל כָּל־ גָּרְנ֥וֹת דָּגָֽן׃ ’al- tiś·maḥ yiś·rā·’êl ’el- gîl kā·‘am·mîm kî zā·nî·ṯā mê·‘al ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ’ā·haḇ·tā ’eṯ·nān ‘al kāl- gā·rə·nō·wṯ dā·ḡānWLC · 1

The threshing floor and winepress will not feed them, and the new wine will fail them

𐤂𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤁 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤊𐤇𐤔 𐤁𐤄

גֹּ֥רֶן וָיֶ֖קֶב לֹ֣א יִרְעֵ֑ם וְתִיר֖וֹשׁ יְכַ֥חֶשׁ בָּֽהּ׃ gō·ren wā·ye·qeḇ lō yir·‘êm wə·ṯî·rō·wōš yə·ḵa·ḥeš bāhWLC · 2

They will not remain in the land of the LORD; Ephraim will return to Egypt and eat unclean food in Assyria.

𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤈𐤌𐤀 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓

לֹ֥א יֵשְׁב֖וּ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ יְהוָ֑ה אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ וְשָׁ֤ב מִצְרַ֔יִם יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ טָמֵ֥א וּבְאַשּׁ֖וּר lō yê·šə·ḇū bə·’e·reṣ Yah·weh ’ep̄·ra·yim wə·šāḇ miṣ·ra·yim yō·ḵê·lū ṭā·mê ū·ḇə·’aš·šūrWLC · 3

They will not pour out wine [offerings] to the LORD, and their sacrifices will not please Him, [but will be] to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat will be defiled. For their bread [will be] for themselves; it will not enter the house of the LORD.

לֹא־ יִסְּכ֨וּ יַיִן֮ לַיהוָ֥ה׀ זִבְחֵיהֶ֗ם וְלֹ֣א יֶֽעֶרְבוּ־ לוֹ֒ לָהֶ֔ם כְּלֶ֤חֶם אוֹנִים֙ כָּל־ אֹכְלָ֖יו יִטַמָּ֑אוּ כִּֽי־ לַחְמָ֣ם לְנַפְשָׁ֔ם לֹ֥א יָב֖וֹא בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ lō- yis·sə·ḵū ya·yin Yah·weh ziḇ·ḥê·hem wə·lō ye·‘er·ḇū- lōw lā·hem kə·le·ḥem ’ō·w·nîm kāl- ’ō·ḵə·lāw yi·ṭam·må̄·ʾū kî- laḥ·mām lə·nap̄·šām lō yā·ḇō·w bêṯ Yah·wehWLC · 4

What will you do on the appointed day, on the day of the LORD’s feast?

𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤂

מַֽה־ תַּעֲשׂ֖וּ מוֹעֵ֑ד לְי֣וֹם וּלְי֖וֹם יְהוָֽה׃ חַג־ mah- ta·‘ă·śū mō·w·‘êḏ lə·yō·wm ū·lə·yō·wm Yah·weh ḥaḡ-WLC · 5

For even if they flee destruction, Egypt will gather them and Memphis will bury them. Their precious silver will be taken over by thistles, [and] thorns [will overrun] their tents.

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤃 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤒𐤁𐤑𐤌 𐤌𐤐 𐤕𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤌𐤇𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤊𐤎𐤐𐤌 𐤉𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤌 𐤒𐤌𐤅𐤔 𐤇𐤅𐤇 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

כִּֽי־ הִנֵּ֤ה הָֽלְכוּ֙ מִשֹּׁ֔ד מִצְרַ֥יִם תְּקַבְּצֵ֖ם מֹ֣ף תְּקַבְּרֵ֑ם מַחְמַ֣ד לְכַסְפָּ֗ם יִֽירָשֵׁ֔ם קִמּוֹשׂ֙ ח֖וֹחַ בְּאָהֳלֵיהֶֽם׃ kî- hin·nêh hā·lə·ḵū miš·šōḏ miṣ·ra·yim tə·qab·bə·ṣêm mōp̄ tə·qab·bə·rêm maḥ·maḏ lə·ḵas·pām yî·rā·šêm qim·mō·wś ḥō·w·aḥ bə·’ā·ho·lê·hemWLC · 6

The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution have arrived— let Israel know it. The prophet is [called] a fool, and the inspired man insane, because of the greatness of your iniquity… and hostility.

יְמֵ֣י הַפְּקֻדָּ֗ה בָּ֣אוּ׀ יְמֵ֣י הַשִׁלֻּ֔ם בָּ֚אוּ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יֵדְע֖וּ הַנָּבִ֗יא אֱוִ֣יל הָר֔וּחַ אִ֣ישׁ מְשֻׁגָּע֙ עַ֚ל רֹ֣ב עֲוֺנְךָ֔ וְרַבָּ֖ה מַשְׂטֵמָֽה׃ yə·mê hap·pə·qud·dāh bā·’ū yə·mê ha·šil·lum bā·’ū yiś·rā·’êl yê·ḏə·‘ū han·nā·ḇî ’ĕ·wîl hā·rū·aḥ ’îš mə·šug·gā‘ ‘al rōḇ ‘ă·wō·nə·ḵā wə·rab·bāh maś·ṭê·māhWLC · 7

The prophet is Ephraim’s watchman, along with my God, [yet] the snare of the fowler [lies] on all his paths. Hostility is in the house of his God!

𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤑𐤐𐤄 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤐𐤇 𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤔 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤈𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅

נָבִ֞יא אֶפְרַ֖יִם צֹפֶ֥ה עִם־ אֱלֹהָ֑י פַּ֤ח יָקוֹשׁ֙ עַל־ כָּל־ דְּרָכָ֔יו מַשְׂטֵמָ֖ה בְּבֵ֥ית אֱלֹהָֽיו׃ nā·ḇî ’ep̄·ra·yim ṣō·p̄eh ‘im- ’ĕ·lō·hāy paḥ yā·qō·wōš ‘al- kāl- də·rā·ḵāw maś·ṭê·māh bə·ḇêṯ ’ĕ·lō·hāwWLC · 8

They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah; He will remember their guilt; He will punish their sins.

הֶעְמִֽיקוּ־ שִׁחֵ֖תוּ כִּימֵ֣י הַגִּבְעָ֑ה יִזְכּ֣וֹר עֲוֺנָ֔ם יִפְק֖וֹד חַטֹּאותָֽם׃ס he‘·mî·qū- ši·ḥê·ṯū kî·mê hag·giḇ·‘āh yiz·kō·wr ‘ă·wō·nām yip̄·qō·wḏ ḥaṭ·ṭō·w·ṯāmWLC · 9

I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the firstfruits of the fig tree in its first season. But they went vvv to Baal-peor, and consecrated themselves to Shame; so they became as detestable as the thing they loved.

𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤏𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤕𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤆𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤒𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤌

מָצָ֙אתִי֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כַּעֲנָבִ֣ים בַּמִּדְבָּ֗ר רָאִ֖יתִי אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם כְּבִכּוּרָ֤ה בִתְאֵנָה֙ בְּרֵ֣אשִׁיתָ֔הּ הֵ֜מָּה בָּ֣אוּ בַֽעַל־ פְּע֗וֹר וַיִּנָּֽזְרוּ֙ לַבֹּ֔שֶׁת וַיִּהְי֥וּ שִׁקּוּצִ֖ים כְּאָהֳבָֽם׃ mā·ṣā·ṯî yiś·rā·’êl ka·‘ă·nā·ḇîm bam·miḏ·bār rā·’î·ṯî ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem kə·ḇik·kū·rāh ḇiṯ·’ê·nāh bə·rê·šî·ṯāh hêm·māh bā·’ū ḇa·‘al- pə·‘ō·wr way·yin·nā·zə·rū lab·bō·šeṯ way·yih·yū šiq·qū·ṣîm kə·’ā·ho·ḇāmWLC · 10

Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird, with no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception.

אֶפְרַ֕יִם כְּבוֹדָ֑ם יִתְעוֹפֵ֣ף כָּע֖וֹף מִלֵּדָ֥ה וּמִבֶּ֖טֶן וּמֵהֵרָיֽוֹן׃ ’ep̄·ra·yim kə·ḇō·w·ḏām yiṯ·‘ō·w·p̄êp̄ kā·‘ō·wp̄ mil·lê·ḏāh ū·mib·be·ṭen ū·mê·hê·rā·yō·wnWLC · 11

Even if they raise their children, I will bereave them of each one. Yes,… woe [be] to them when I turn away from them!

כִּ֤י אִם־ יְגַדְּלוּ֙ אֶת־ בְּנֵיהֶ֔ם וְשִׁכַּלְתִּ֖ים מֵֽאָדָ֑ם כִּֽי־ גַם־ א֥וֹי לָהֶ֖ם בְּשׂוּרִ֥י מֵהֶֽם׃ kî ’im- yə·ḡad·də·lū ’eṯ- bə·nê·hem wə·šik·kal·tîm mê·’ā·ḏām kî- ḡam- ’ō·w lā·hem bə·śū·rî mê·hemWLC · 12

I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre, planted in a meadow. But Ephraim will bring out his children for slaughter.

רָאִ֥יתִי אֶפְרַ֛יִם כַּאֲשֶׁר־ לְצ֖וֹר שְׁתוּלָ֣ה בְנָוֶ֑ה וְאֶפְרַ֕יִם לְהוֹצִ֥יא בָּנָֽיו׃ אֶל־ הֹרֵ֖ג rā·’î·ṯî ’ep̄·ra·yim ka·’ă·šer- lə·ṣō·wr šə·ṯū·lāh ḇə·nā·weh wə·’ep̄·ra·yim lə·hō·w·ṣî bā·nāw ’el- hō·rêḡWLC · 13

Give them, O LORD— what will You give? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that dry up!

תֵּן־ לָהֶ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה מַה־ תִּתֵּ֑ן תֵּן־ לָהֶם֙ רֶ֣חֶם מַשְׁכִּ֔יל וְשָׁדַ֖יִם צֹמְקִֽים׃ tên- lā·hem Yah·weh mah- tit·tên tên- lā·hem re·ḥem maš·kîl wə·šā·ḏa·yim ṣō·mə·qîmWLC · 14

All their evil appears at Gilgal, for there I hated them. I will drive them from My house for the wickedness of their deeds. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious.

כָּל־ רָעָתָ֤ם בַּגִּלְגָּל֙ כִּֽי־ שָׁ֣ם שְׂנֵאתִ֔ים אֲגָרְשֵׁ֑ם מִבֵּיתִ֖י עַ֚ל רֹ֣עַ מַֽעַלְלֵיהֶ֔ם לֹ֤א אוֹסֵף֙ אַהֲבָתָ֔ם כָּל־ שָׂרֵיהֶ֖ם סֹרְרִֽים׃ kāl- rā·‘ā·ṯām bag·gil·gāl kî- šām śə·nê·ṯîm ’ă·ḡā·rə·šêm mib·bê·ṯî ‘al rō·a‘ ma·‘al·lê·hem lō ’ō·w·sêp̄ ’a·hă·ḇā·ṯām kāl- śā·rê·hem sō·rə·rîmWLC · 15

Ephraim is struck down; their root is withered; they cannot bear fruit… Even if they bear children, I will slay the darlings of their wombs.

אֶפְרַ֔יִם הֻכָּ֣ה שָׁרְשָׁ֥ם יָבֵ֖שׁ יַעֲשׂ֑וּן פְּרִ֣י בְלִי גַּ֚ם כִּ֣י יֵֽלֵד֔וּן וְהֵמַתִּ֖י מַחֲמַדֵּ֥י בִטְנָֽם׃ס ’ep̄·ra·yim huk·kāh šā·rə·šām yā·ḇêš ya·‘ă·śūn pə·rî ḇə·lī gam kî yê·lê·ḏūn wə·hê·mat·tî ma·ḥă·mad·dê ḇiṭ·nāmWLC · 16

My God will reject them because they have not obeyed Him; and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
