Chapter 3
The LORD Judges the Nations
1
[“]Yes,… in those days and at that time, when I restore Judah and Jerusalem from captivity,
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤕
כִּ֗י הִנֵּ֛ה הָהֵ֖מָּה בַּיָּמִ֥ים הַהִ֑יא וּבָעֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָשׁוּב אֶת־ יְהוּדָ֖ה וִירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ שְׁב֥וּת kî hin·nêh hā·hêm·māh bay·yā·mîm ha·hî ū·ḇā·‘êṯ ’ă·šer ʾå̄·šūḇ ’eṯ- yə·hū·ḏāh wî·rū·šā·lim šə·ḇūṯ — WLC · 1

I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will enter into judgment against them concerning My people, My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations as they divided up My land.

וְקִבַּצְתִּי֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם וְה֣וֹרַדְתִּ֔ים אֶל־ עֵ֖מֶק יְהֽוֹשָׁפָ֑ט שָׁ֗ם וְנִשְׁפַּטְתִּ֨י עִמָּ֜ם עַל־ עַמִּ֨י וְנַחֲלָתִ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר פִּזְּר֣וּ בַגּוֹיִ֔ם וְאֶת־ חִלֵּֽקוּ׃ אַרְצִ֖י wə·qib·baṣ·tî ’eṯ- kāl- hag·gō·w·yim wə·hō·w·raḏ·tîm ’el- ‘ê·meq yə·hō·wō·šā·p̄āṭ šām wə·niš·paṭ·tî ‘im·mām ‘al- ‘am·mî wə·na·ḥă·lā·ṯî yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer piz·zə·rū ḇag·gō·w·yim wə·’eṯ- ḥil·lê·qū ’ar·ṣî — WLC · 2

They cast lots for My people; they bartered a boy for a prostitute and sold a girl for wine to drink.
𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤂𐤅𐤓𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤃 𐤁𐤆𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤅
יַדּ֣וּ גוֹרָ֑ל וְאֶל־ עַמִּ֖י וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ הַיֶּ֙לֶד֙ בַּזּוֹנָ֔ה מָכְר֥וּ וְהַיַּלְדָּ֛ה בַיַּ֖יִן וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃ yad·dū ḡō·w·rāl wə·’el- ‘am·mî way·yit·tə·nū hay·ye·leḏ baz·zō·w·nāh mā·ḵə·rū wə·hay·yal·dāh ḇay·ya·yin way·yiš·tū — WLC · 3

Now what do you have against Me, O Tyre, Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you rendering against Me a recompense? If you retaliate against Me, I will swiftly and speedily return your recompense upon your heads.

וְ֠גַם מָה־ אַתֶּ֥ם לִי֙ צֹ֣ר וְצִיד֔וֹן וְכֹ֖ל גְּלִיל֣וֹת פְּלָ֑שֶׁת אַתֶּם֙ מְשַׁלְּמִ֣ים עָלָ֔י הַגְּמ֗וּל וְאִם־ אַתֶּם֙ גֹּמְלִ֤ים עָלַ֔י קַ֣ל מְהֵרָ֔ה אָשִׁ֥יב גְּמֻלְכֶ֖ם בְּרֹאשְׁכֶֽם׃ wə·ḡam māh- ’at·tem lî ṣōr wə·ṣî·ḏō·wn wə·ḵōl gə·lî·lō·wṯ pə·lā·šeṯ ’at·tem mə·šal·lə·mîm ‘ā·lāy hag·gə·mūl wə·’im- ’at·tem gō·mə·lîm ‘ā·lay qal mə·hê·rāh ’ā·šîḇ gə·mul·ḵem bə·rō·šə·ḵem — WLC · 4

For you took My silver and gold and carried off My finest treasures to your temples.

אֲשֶׁר־ לְקַחְתֶּ֑ם כַּסְפִּ֥י וּזְהָבִ֖י הֲבֵאתֶ֖ם הַטֹּבִ֔ים וּמַֽחֲמַדַּי֙ לְהֵיכְלֵיכֶֽם׃ ’ă·šer- lə·qaḥ·tem kas·pî ū·zə·hā·ḇî hă·ḇê·ṯem haṭ·ṭō·ḇîm ū·ma·ḥă·mad·day lə·hê·ḵə·lê·ḵem — WLC · 5

You sold… the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks…, to send them far from their homeland.

מְכַרְתֶּ֖ם לִבְנֵ֣י וּבְנֵ֤י יְהוּדָה֙ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם וּבְנֵ֣י הַיְּוָנִ֑ים לְמַ֥עַן הַרְחִיקָ֖ם מֵעַ֥ל גְּבוּלָֽם׃ mə·ḵar·tem liḇ·nê ū·ḇə·nê yə·hū·ḏāh yə·rū·šā·lim ū·ḇə·nê hay·yə·wā·nîm lə·ma·‘an har·ḥî·qām mê·‘al gə·ḇū·lām — WLC · 6

Behold, I will rouse them from the places to which you sold them…; I will return your recompense upon your heads.

הִנְנִ֣י מְעִירָ֔ם מִן־ הַ֨מָּק֔וֹם אֲשֶׁר־ מְכַרְתֶּ֥ם אֹתָ֖ם שָׁ֑מָּה וַהֲשִׁבֹתִ֥י גְמֻלְכֶ֖ם בְּרֹאשְׁכֶֽם׃ hin·nî mə·‘î·rām min- ham·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer- mə·ḵar·tem ’ō·ṯām šām·māh wa·hă·ši·ḇō·ṯî ḡə·mul·ḵem bə·rō·šə·ḵem — WLC · 7

I will sell your sons and daughters into the hands of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans— to a distant nation.” Indeed, the LORD has spoken.

וּמָכַרְתִּ֞י אֶת־ בְּנֵיכֶ֣ם וְאֶת־ בְּנֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם בְּיַד֙ בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וּמְכָר֥וּם לִשְׁבָאיִ֖ם אֶל־ רָח֑וֹק גּ֣וֹי כִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבֵּֽר׃ס ū·mā·ḵar·tî ’eṯ- bə·nê·ḵem wə·’eṯ- bə·nō·w·ṯê·ḵem bə·yaḏ bə·nê yə·hū·ḏāh ū·mə·ḵā·rūm liš·ḇā·yim ’el- rā·ḥō·wq gō·w kî Yah·weh dib·bêr — WLC · 8

Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war; rouse the mighty men; let all the men of war advance and attack!

קִרְאוּ־ זֹאת֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם קַדְּשׁ֖וּ מִלְחָמָ֑ה הָעִ֙ירוּ֙ הַגִּבּוֹרִ֔ים כֹּ֖ל אַנְשֵׁ֥י הַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ יִגְּשׁ֣וּ יַֽעֲל֔וּ qir·’ū- zōṯ bag·gō·w·yim qad·də·šū mil·ḥā·māh hā·‘î·rū hag·gib·bō·w·rîm kōl ’an·šê ham·mil·ḥā·māh yig·gə·šū ya·‘ă·lū — WLC · 9

Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I [am] strong!’

כֹּ֤תּוּ אִתֵּיכֶם֙ לַֽחֲרָב֔וֹת וּמַזְמְרֹֽתֵיכֶ֖ם לִרְמָחִ֑ים הַֽחַלָּ֔שׁ יֹאמַ֖ר אָֽנִי׃ גִּבּ֥וֹר kōt·tū ’it·tê·ḵem la·ḥă·rā·ḇō·wṯ ū·maz·mə·rō·ṯê·ḵem lir·mā·ḥîm ha·ḥal·lāš yō·mar ’ā·nî gib·bō·wr — WLC · 10

Come quickly, all {you} surrounding nations, and gather yourselves. Bring down Your mighty ones -, O LORD.

וָבֹ֧אוּ ע֣וּשׁוּ כָֽל־ מִסָּבִ֖יב הַגּוֹיִ֛ם וְנִקְבָּ֑צוּ הַֽנְחַ֥ת גִּבּוֹרֶֽיךָ׃ שָׁ֕מָּה יְהוָ֖ה wā·ḇō·’ū ‘ū·šū ḵāl mis·sā·ḇîḇ hag·gō·w·yim wə·niq·bā·ṣū han·ḥaṯ gib·bō·w·re·ḵā šām·māh Yah·weh — WLC · 11

Let the nations be roused and advance to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit down to judge all the nations on every side.

הַגּוֹיִ֔ם יֵע֙וֹרוּ֙ וְיַעֲל֣וּ אֶל־ עֵ֖מֶק יְהֽוֹשָׁפָ֑ט כִּ֣י שָׁ֗ם אֵשֵׁ֛ב לִשְׁפֹּ֥ט אֶת־ כָּל־ הַגּוֹיִ֖ם מִסָּבִֽיב׃ hag·gō·w·yim yê·‘ō·w·rū wə·ya·‘ă·lū ’el- ‘ê·meq yə·hō·wō·šā·p̄āṭ kî šām ’ê·šêḇ liš·pōṭ ’eṯ- kāl- hag·gō·w·yim mis·sā·ḇîḇ — WLC · 12

Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, trample the grapes, for the winepress is full; the wine vats overflow because their wickedness is great.

שִׁלְח֣וּ מַגָּ֔ל כִּ֥י קָצִ֑יר בָשַׁ֖ל בֹּ֤אֽוּ רְדוּ֙ כִּֽי־ גַּ֔ת מָ֣לְאָה הַיְקָבִ֔ים הֵשִׁ֙יקוּ֙ כִּ֥י רָעָתָֽם׃ רַבָּ֖ה šil·ḥū mag·gāl kî qā·ṣîr ḇā·šal bō·’ū rə·ḏū kî- gaṯ mā·lə·’āh hay·qā·ḇîm hê·šî·qū kî rā·‘ā·ṯām rab·bāh — WLC · 13

Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the Day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

הֲמוֹנִ֣ים הֲמוֹנִ֔ים בְּעֵ֖מֶק הֶֽחָר֑וּץ כִּ֤י י֣וֹם יְהוָ֔ה קָרוֹב֙ בְּעֵ֖מֶק הֶחָרֽוּץ׃ hă·mō·w·nîm hă·mō·w·nîm bə·‘ê·meq he·ḥā·rūṣ kî yō·wm Yah·weh qā·rō·wḇ bə·‘ê·meq he·ḥā·rūṣ — WLC · 14

The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars {will} no longer shine.
𐤔𐤌𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤇 𐤒𐤃𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤍𐤂𐤄𐤌
שֶׁ֥מֶשׁ וְיָרֵ֖חַ קָדָ֑רוּ וְכוֹכָבִ֖ים אָסְפ֥וּ נָגְהָֽם׃ še·meš wə·yā·rê·aḥ qā·ḏā·rū wə·ḵō·w·ḵā·ḇîm ’ā·sə·p̄ū nā·ḡə·hām — WLC · 15

The LORD will roar from Zion and raise His voice from Jerusalem; heaven and earth will tremble. But the LORD will be a refuge for His people, a stronghold for the people of Israel.

וַיהוָ֞ה יִשְׁאָ֗ג מִצִּיּ֣וֹן יִתֵּ֣ן קוֹל֔וֹ וּמִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ שָׁמַ֣יִם וָאָ֑רֶץ וְרָעֲשׁ֖וּ וַֽיהוָה֙ מַֽחֲסֶ֣ה לְעַמּ֔וֹ וּמָע֖וֹז לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Yah·weh yiš·’āḡ miṣ·ṣî·yō·wn yit·tên qō·w·lōw ū·mî·rū·šā·lim šā·ma·yim wā·’ā·reṣ wə·rā·‘ă·šū Yah·weh ma·ḥă·seh lə·‘am·mōw ū·mā·‘ō·wz liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 16
Blessings for God’s People

Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who dwells in Zion, My holy mountain. Jerusalem will be holy, never again to be overrun by foreigners
𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤁𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤓 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃𐤎 𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤆𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤄
וִֽידַעְתֶּ֗ם כִּ֣י אֲנִ֤י יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם שֹׁכֵ֖ן בְּצִיּ֣וֹן קָדְשִׁ֑י הַר־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ וְהָיְתָ֤ה קֹ֔דֶשׁ לֹא־ עֽוֹד׃ס יַֽעַבְרוּ־ וְזָרִ֥ים בָ֖הּ wî·ḏa‘·tem kî ’ă·nî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem šō·ḵên bə·ṣî·yō·wn qāḏ·šî har- yə·rū·šā·lim wə·hā·yə·ṯāh qō·ḏeš lō- ‘ō·wḏ ya·‘aḇ·rū- wə·zā·rîm ḇāh — WLC · 17

And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine, and the hills will flow with milk. All the streams of Judah will run with water, and a spring will flow from the house of the LORD to water the Valley of Acacias.

Egypt will become desolate, and Edom a desert wasteland because of the violence done to the people of Judah, in whose land they shed innocent blood.

But Judah will be inhabited forever…, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
