Chapter 5
A Lamentation against Israel
1
Hear this word, O house of Israel, this lamentation I take up against you:

שִׁמְע֞וּ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֗ה הַדָּבָ֣ר בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ אֲשֶׁ֨ר קִינָ֖ה אָנֹכִ֜י נֹשֵׂ֧א עֲלֵיכֶ֛ם šim·‘ū ’eṯ- haz·zeh had·dā·ḇār bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer qî·nāh ’ā·nō·ḵî nō·śê ‘ă·lê·ḵem — WLC · 1

“Fallen is Virgin Israel, never to rise again. She lies abandoned on her land, with no one to raise her up.”

נָֽפְלָה֙ בְּתוּלַ֖ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לֹֽא־ ק֔וּם תוֹסִ֣יף נִטְּשָׁ֥ה עַל־ אַדְמָתָ֖הּ אֵ֥ין מְקִימָֽהּ׃ nā·p̄ə·lāh bə·ṯū·laṯ yiś·rā·’êl lō- qūm ṯō·w·sîp̄ niṭ·ṭə·šāh ‘al- ’aḏ·mā·ṯāh ’ên mə·qî·māh — WLC · 2

This is what… the Lord GOD says: “The city that marches out a thousand strong will have but a hundred left, and the one that marches out a hundred strong will have but ten left in the house of Israel.”

A Call to Repentance

For this is what the LORD says to the house of Israel: “Seek Me and live!
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤅
כִּ֣י כֹ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אָמַ֛ר לְבֵ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל דִּרְשׁ֖וּנִי וִֽחְיֽוּ׃ kî ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar lə·ḇêṯ yiś·rā·’êl dir·šū·nî wiḥ·yū — WLC · 4

Do not seek vvv Bethel or go to Gilgal; do not journey vvv to Beersheba,… for Gilgal will surely go into exile…, vvv and Bethel will come to nothing.

וְאַֽל־ תִּדְרְשׁוּ֙ בֵּֽית־ אֵ֔ל תָבֹ֔אוּ וְהַגִּלְגָּל֙ לֹ֣א תַעֲבֹ֑רוּ וּבְאֵ֥ר שֶׁ֖בַע לֹ֣א כִּ֤י הַגִּלְגָּל֙ גָּלֹ֣ה יִגְלֶ֔ה וּבֵֽית־ אֵ֖ל יִהְיֶ֥ה לְאָֽוֶן׃ wə·’al- tiḏ·rə·šū bêṯ- ’êl ṯā·ḇō·’ū wə·hag·gil·gāl lō ṯa·‘ă·ḇō·rū ū·ḇə·’êr še·ḇa‘ lō kî hag·gil·gāl gā·lōh yiḡ·leh ū·ḇêṯ- ’êl yih·yeh lə·’ā·wen — WLC · 5

Seek the LORD and live, or He will sweep like fire through the house of Joseph; it will devour everything, with no one vvv at Bethel to extinguish it.

דִּרְשׁ֥וּ אֶת־ יְהוָ֖ה וִֽחְי֑וּ פֶּן־ יִצְלַ֤ח כָּאֵשׁ֙ בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵ֔ף וְאָכְלָ֥ה וְאֵין־ לְבֵֽית־ אֵֽל׃ מְכַבֶּ֖ה dir·šū ’eṯ- Yah·weh wiḥ·yū pen- yiṣ·laḥ kā·’êš bêṯ yō·w·sêp̄ wə·’ā·ḵə·lāh wə·’ên- lə·ḇêṯ- ’êl mə·ḵab·beh — WLC · 6

There are those who turn justice into wormwood and cast righteousness to the ground.

הַהֹפְכִ֥ים מִשְׁפָּ֑ט לְלַעֲנָ֖ה הִנִּֽיחוּ׃ וּצְדָקָ֖ה לָאָ֥רֶץ ha·hō·p̄ə·ḵîm miš·pāṭ lə·la·‘ă·nāh hin·nî·ḥū ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh lā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 7

He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns darkness into dawn and darkens day into night, who summons the waters of the sea and pours them over the face of the earth— the LORD is His name—

עֹשֵׂ֨ה כִימָ֜ה וּכְסִ֗יל וְהֹפֵ֤ךְ צַלְמָ֔וֶת לַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ הֶחְשִׁ֑יךְ וְי֖וֹם לַ֣יְלָה הַקּוֹרֵ֣א לְמֵֽי־ הַיָּ֗ם וַֽיִּשְׁפְּכֵ֛ם עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ יְהוָ֥ה שְׁמֽוֹ׃ס ‘ō·śêh ḵî·māh ū·ḵə·sîl wə·hō·p̄êḵ ṣal·mā·weṯ lab·bō·qer heḥ·šîḵ wə·yō·wm lay·lāh haq·qō·w·rê lə·mê- hay·yām way·yiš·pə·ḵêm ‘al- pə·nê hā·’ā·reṣ Yah·weh šə·mōw — WLC · 8

He flashes destruction on the strong, so that fury comes upon the stronghold.

הַמַּבְלִ֥יג שֹׁ֖ד עַל־ עָ֑ז וְשֹׁ֖ד יָבֽוֹא׃ עַל־ מִבְצָ֥ר ham·maḇ·lîḡ šōḏ ‘al- ‘āz wə·šōḏ yā·ḇō·w ‘al- miḇ·ṣār — WLC · 9

There are those who hate the one who reproves in the gate and despise him who speaks with integrity.
𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤅𐤊𐤉𐤇 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤉𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤌
שָׂנְא֥וּ מוֹכִ֑יחַ בַשַּׁ֖עַר יְתָעֵֽבוּ׃ וְדֹבֵ֥ר תָּמִ֖ים śā·nə·’ū mō·w·ḵî·aḥ ḇaš·ša·‘ar yə·ṯā·‘ê·ḇū wə·ḏō·ḇêr tā·mîm — WLC · 10

Therefore, because you trample on the poor and exact from him a tax of grain, you will never live in the stone houses… you have built; you will never drink the wine from the lush vineyards you have planted.

לָ֠כֵן יַ֣עַן בּוֹשַׁסְכֶ֞ם עַל־ דָּ֗ל תִּקְח֣וּ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ וּמַשְׂאַת־ בַּר֙ וְלֹא־ תֵ֣שְׁבוּ בָ֑ם בָּתֵּ֥י גָזִ֛ית בְּנִיתֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א תִשְׁתּ֖וּ אֶת־ יֵינָֽם׃ חֶ֣מֶד כַּרְמֵי־ נְטַעְתֶּ֔ם lā·ḵên ya·‘an bō·wō·šas·ḵem ‘al- dāl tiq·ḥū mim·men·nū ū·maś·’aṯ- bar wə·lō- ṯê·šə·ḇū ḇām bāt·tê ḡā·zîṯ bə·nî·ṯem wə·lō ṯiš·tū ’eṯ- yê·nām ḥe·meḏ kar·mê- nə·ṭa‘·tem — WLC · 11

For I know [that] your transgressions are many and your sins are numerous. You oppress the righteous by taking bribes; {you deprive} the poor of justice in the gate.
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤑𐤓𐤓𐤉 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤉 𐤊𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤈𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓
כִּ֤י יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ פִּשְׁעֵיכֶ֔ם רַבִּ֣ים חַטֹּֽאתֵיכֶ֑ם וַעֲצֻמִ֖ים צֹרְרֵ֤י צַדִּיק֙ לֹ֣קְחֵי כֹ֔פֶר וְאֶבְיוֹנִ֖ים הִטּֽוּ׃ בַּשַּׁ֥עַר kî yā·ḏa‘·tî piš·‘ê·ḵem rab·bîm ḥaṭ·ṭō·ṯê·ḵem wa·‘ă·ṣu·mîm ṣō·rə·rê ṣad·dîq lō·qə·ḥê ḵō·p̄er wə·’eḇ·yō·w·nîm hiṭ·ṭū baš·ša·‘ar — WLC · 12

Therefore, the prudent keep silent in such times, for the days are evil…

לָכֵ֗ן הַמַּשְׂכִּ֛יל יִדֹּ֑ם הַהִ֖יא בָּעֵ֥ת כִּ֛י עֵ֥ת רָעָ֖ה הִֽיא׃ lā·ḵên ham·maś·kîl yid·dōm ha·hî bā·‘êṯ kî ‘êṯ rā·‘āh hî — WLC · 13

Seek good, not evil, so that you may live. And the LORD, the God of Hosts, will be… with you, as you have claimed.

דִּרְשׁוּ־ ט֥וֹב וְאַל־ רָ֖ע לְמַ֣עַן תִּֽחְי֑וּ יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֵֽי־ צְבָא֛וֹת וִיהִי־ כֵ֞ן אִתְּכֶ֖ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲמַרְתֶּֽם׃ dir·šū- ṭō·wḇ wə·’al- rā‘ lə·ma·‘an tiḥ·yū Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê- ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ wî·hî- ḵên ’it·tə·ḵem ka·’ă·šer ’ă·mar·tem — WLC · 14

Hate evil and love good; establish justice in the gate. Perhaps the LORD, the God of Hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”

שִׂנְאוּ־ רָע֙ וְאֶ֣הֱבוּ ט֔וֹב וְהַצִּ֥יגוּ מִשְׁפָּ֑ט בַשַּׁ֖עַר אוּלַ֗י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽי־ צְבָא֖וֹת יֶֽחֱנַ֛ן שְׁאֵרִ֥ית יוֹסֵֽף׃ס śin·’ū- rā‘ wə·’e·hĕ·ḇū ṭō·wḇ wə·haṣ·ṣî·ḡū miš·pāṭ ḇaš·ša·‘ar ’ū·lay Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê- ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ye·ḥĕ·nan šə·’ê·rîṯ yō·w·sêp̄ — WLC · 15
Woe to Rebellious Israel

Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Hosts, the Lord, says: “There will be wailing in all the public squares and cries of ‘Alas! Alas!’ in all the streets. The farmer will be summoned to mourn, and the mourners… to wail.

לָ֠כֵן כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֜ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י צְבָאוֹת֙ אֲדֹנָ֔י אָמַ֨ר מִסְפֵּ֔ד בְּכָל־ רְחֹב֣וֹת יֹאמְר֣וּ הוֹ־ ה֑וֹ וּבְכָל־ חוּצ֖וֹת אִכָּר֙ וְקָרְא֤וּ אֶל־ אֵ֔בֶל י֥וֹדְעֵי נֶֽהִי׃ אֶל־ וּמִסְפֵּ֖ד lā·ḵên kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ă·ḏō·nāy ’ā·mar mis·pêḏ bə·ḵāl rə·ḥō·ḇō·wṯ yō·mə·rū hōw- hōw ū·ḇə·ḵāl ḥū·ṣō·wṯ ’ik·kār wə·qā·rə·’ū ’el- ’ê·ḇel yō·wḏ·‘ê ne·hî ’el- ū·mis·pêḏ — WLC · 16

There will be wailing in all the vineyards, for I will pass through your midst,” says the LORD.

מִסְפֵּ֑ד וּבְכָל־ כְּרָמִ֖ים כִּֽי־ אֶעֱבֹ֥ר בְּקִרְבְּךָ֖ אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ס mis·pêḏ ū·ḇə·ḵāl kə·rā·mîm kî- ’e·‘ĕ·ḇōr bə·qir·bə·ḵā ’ā·mar Yah·weh — WLC · 17

Woe to you who long for the Day of the LORD! What… will the Day of the LORD be for you? It [will be] darkness and not light.

ה֥וֹי הַמִּתְאַוִּ֖ים אֶת־ י֣וֹם יְהוָ֑ה לָמָּה־ זֶּ֥ה י֥וֹם יְהוָ֖ה לָכֶ֛ם הוּא־ חֹ֥שֶׁךְ וְלֹא־ אֽוֹר׃ hō·w ham·miṯ·’aw·wîm ’eṯ- yō·wm Yah·weh lām·māh- zeh yō·wm Yah·weh lā·ḵem hū- ḥō·šeḵ wə·lō- ’ō·wr — WLC · 18

It will be like a man who flees from a lion, only to encounter a bear, or who enters his house and rests his hand against the wall, only to be bitten by a snake.

כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר אִישׁ֙ יָנ֥וּס מִפְּנֵ֣י הָאֲרִ֔י וּפְגָע֖וֹ הַדֹּ֑ב וּבָ֣א הַבַּ֔יִת וְסָמַ֤ךְ יָדוֹ֙ עַל־ הַקִּ֔יר וּנְשָׁכ֖וֹ הַנָּחָֽשׁ׃ ka·’ă·šer ’îš yā·nūs mip·pə·nê hā·’ă·rî ū·p̄ə·ḡā·‘ōw had·dōḇ ū·ḇā hab·ba·yiṯ wə·sā·maḵ yā·ḏōw ‘al- haq·qîr ū·nə·šā·ḵōw han·nā·ḥāš — WLC · 19

Will not the Day of the LORD be darkness and not light, even gloom with no brightness in it?

Even though you offer Me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; for your peace offerings of fattened cattle I will have no regard.
