Chapter 6

Woe to Those at Ease in Zion

1

Woe to those at ease in Zion and those secure on Mount Samaria, the distinguished ones of the foremost nation, to whom the house of Israel comes.

ה֚וֹי הַשַּׁאֲנַנִּ֣ים בְּצִיּ֔וֹן וְהַבֹּטְחִ֖ים בְּהַ֣ר שֹׁמְר֑וֹן נְקֻבֵי֙ רֵאשִׁ֣ית הַגּוֹיִ֔ם לָהֶ֖ם בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ וּבָ֥אוּ hō·w haš·ša·’ă·nan·nîm bə·ṣî·yō·wn wə·hab·bō·ṭə·ḥîm bə·har šō·mə·rō·wn nə·qu·ḇê rê·šîṯ hag·gō·w·yim lā·hem bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ū·ḇā·’ūWLC · 1

Cross over to Calneh and see; go from there to the great Hamath; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these… kingdoms? Is their territory larger than yours?

עִבְר֤וּ כַֽלְנֵה֙ וּרְא֔וּ וּלְכ֥וּ מִשָּׁ֖ם רַבָּ֑ה חֲמַ֣ת וּרְד֣וּ גַת־ פְּלִשְׁתּ֗ים הֲטוֹבִים֙ מִן־ הָאֵ֔לֶּה אִם־ הַמַּמְלָכ֣וֹת גְּבוּלָ֖ם רַ֥ב מִגְּבֻלְכֶֽם׃ ‘iḇ·rū ḵal·nêh ū·rə·’ū ū·lə·ḵū miš·šām rab·bāh ḥă·maṯ ū·rə·ḏū ḡaṯ- pə·liš·tm hă·ṭō·w·ḇîm min- hā·’êl·leh ’im- ham·mam·lā·ḵō·wṯ gə·ḇū·lām raḇ mig·gə·ḇul·ḵemWLC · 2

You dismiss the day of calamity and bring near a reign of violence.

הַֽמְנַדִּ֖ים לְי֣וֹם רָ֑ע וַתַּגִּישׁ֖וּן שֶׁ֥בֶת חָמָֽס׃ ham·nad·dîm lə·yō·wm rā‘ wat·tag·gî·šūn še·ḇeṯ ḥā·māsWLC · 3

You lie on beds inlaid with ivory, and lounge upon your couches. You dine on lambs from the flock and calves from the stall.

𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤈𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤍 𐤅𐤎𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤓𐤔𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤌𐤓𐤁𐤒

הַשֹּֽׁכְבִים֙ עַל־ מִטּ֣וֹת שֵׁ֔ן וּסְרֻחִ֖ים עַל־ עַרְשׂוֹתָ֑ם וְאֹכְלִ֤ים כָּרִים֙ מִצֹּ֔אן וַעֲגָלִ֖ים מִתּ֥וֹךְ מַרְבֵּֽק׃ haš·šō·ḵə·ḇîm ‘al- miṭ·ṭō·wṯ šên ū·sə·ru·ḥîm ‘al- ‘ar·śō·w·ṯām wə·’ō·ḵə·lîm kā·rîm miṣ·ṣōn wa·‘ă·ḡā·lîm mit·tō·wḵ mar·bêqWLC · 4

You improvise songs vvv on the harp like David and invent your own musical instruments.

𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤋 𐤊𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤔𐤉𐤓 𐤊𐤋𐤉

הַפֹּרְטִ֖ים עַל־ פִּ֣י הַנָּ֑בֶל כְּדָוִ֕יד חָשְׁב֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם שִֽׁיר׃ כְּלֵי־ hap·pō·rə·ṭîm ‘al- pî han·nā·ḇel kə·ḏā·wîḏ ḥā·šə·ḇū lā·hem šîr kə·lê-WLC · 5

You drink wine by the bowlful and anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you fail to grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

הַשֹּׁתִ֤ים יַ֔יִן בְּמִזְרְקֵי֙ יִמְשָׁ֑חוּ וְרֵאשִׁ֥ית שְׁמָנִ֖ים וְלֹ֥א נֶחְל֖וּ עַל־ שֵׁ֥בֶר יוֹסֵֽף haš·šō·ṯîm ya·yin bə·miz·rə·qê yim·šā·ḥū wə·rê·šîṯ šə·mā·nîm wə·lō neḥ·lū ‘al- šê·ḇer yō·sēp̄WLC · 6

Therefore, you will now go into exile as the first of the captives, and your feasting and lounging will come to an end.

The Pride of Israel

The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself— the LORD, the God of Hosts, has declared: “I abhor Jacob’s pride and detest his citadels, so I will deliver up the city and everything in it.”

אֲדֹנָ֨י יְהוִ֜ה נִשְׁבַּע֩ בְּנַפְשׁ֗וֹ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י צְבָא֔וֹת נְאֻם־ אָֽנֹכִי֙ אֶת־ מְתָאֵ֤ב יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב גְּא֣וֹן שָׂנֵ֑אתִי וְאַרְמְנֹתָ֖יו וְהִסְגַּרְתִּ֖י עִ֥יר וּמְלֹאָֽהּ׃ ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh niš·ba‘ bə·nap̄·šōw Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ nə·’um- ’ā·nō·ḵî ’eṯ- mə·ṯā·’êḇ ya·‘ă·qōḇ gə·’ō·wn śā·nê·ṯî wə·’ar·mə·nō·ṯāw wə·his·gar·tî ‘îr ū·mə·lō·’āhWLC · 8

And if there are ten men left in one house, they too will die.

אִם־ וְהָיָ֗ה עֲשָׂרָ֧ה אֲנָשִׁ֛ים יִוָּ֨תְר֜וּ אֶחָ֖ד בְּבַ֥יִת וָמֵֽתוּ׃ ’im- wə·hā·yāh ‘ă·śā·rāh ’ă·nā·šîm yiw·wā·ṯə·rū ’e·ḥāḏ bə·ḇa·yiṯ wā·mê·ṯūWLC · 9

And when the relative who is to burn [the bodies] picks them up… to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside -, “Is anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” [the relative] will retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be invoked.”

דּוֹד֣וֹ וּמְסָרְפ֗וֹ וּנְשָׂא֞וֹ עֲצָמִים֮ לְהוֹצִ֣יא מִן־ הַבַּיִת֒ וְאָמַ֞ר לַאֲשֶׁ֨ר בְּיַרְכְּתֵ֥י הַבַּ֛יִת הַע֥וֹד עִמָּ֖ךְ אָ֑פֶס וְאָמַ֣ר הָ֔ס וְאָמַ֣ר כִּ֛י בְּשֵׁ֥ם יְהוָֽה׃ לֹ֥א לְהַזְכִּ֖יר dō·w·ḏōw ū·mə·sā·rə·p̄ōw ū·nə·śā·’ōw ‘ă·ṣā·mîm lə·hō·w·ṣî min- hab·ba·yiṯ wə·’ā·mar la·’ă·šer bə·yar·kə·ṯê hab·ba·yiṯ ha·‘ō·wḏ ‘im·māḵ ’ā·p̄es wə·’ā·mar hās wə·’ā·mar kî bə·šêm Yah·weh lō lə·haz·kîrWLC · 10

For… the LORD gives a command: “The great house will be smashed to pieces, and the small house to rubble.”

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤄 𐤓𐤎𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤏𐤉𐤌

כִּֽי־ הִנֵּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ מְצַוֶּ֔ה הַגָּד֖וֹל הַבַּ֥יִת וְהִכָּ֛ה רְסִיסִ֑ים הַקָּטֹ֖ן וְהַבַּ֥יִת בְּקִעִֽים׃ kî- hin·nêh Yah·weh mə·ṣaw·weh hag·gā·ḏō·wl hab·ba·yiṯ wə·hik·kāh rə·sî·sîm haq·qā·ṭōn wə·hab·ba·yiṯ bə·qi·‘îmWLC · 11

“Do horses… gallop on the cliffs? Does one plow [the sea] with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood—

סוּסִ֔ים אִֽם־ הַיְרֻצ֤וּן בַּסֶּ֙לַע֙ יַחֲר֖וֹשׁ בַּבְּקָרִ֑ים כִּֽי־ הֲפַכְתֶּ֤ם מִשְׁפָּ֔ט לְרֹאשׁ֙ וּפְרִ֥י צְדָקָ֖ה לְלַעֲנָֽה׃ sū·sîm ’im- hay·ru·ṣūn bas·se·la‘ ya·ḥă·rō·wōš bab·bə·qā·rîm kî- hă·p̄aḵ·tem miš·pāṭ lə·rōš ū·p̄ə·rî ṣə·ḏā·qāh lə·la·‘ă·nāhWLC · 12

you who rejoice vvv in Lo-debar and say, ‘Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?’

הַשְּׂמֵחִ֖ים לְלֹ֣א דָבָ֑ר הָאֹ֣מְרִ֔ים הֲל֣וֹא לָקַ֥חְנוּ קַרְנָֽיִם׃ לָ֖נוּ בְחָזְקֵ֔נוּ haś·śə·mê·ḥîm lə·lō ḏā·ḇār hā·’ō·mə·rîm hă·lō·w lā·qaḥ·nū qar·nā·yim lā·nū ḇə·ḥā·zə·qê·nūWLC · 13

For behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD, the God of Hosts, “and they will oppress you from Lebo-hamath… to the Brook of the Arabah.”
