Chapter 1

Jonah Flees from the LORD

1

Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיְהִי֙ אֶל־ יוֹנָ֥ה בֶן־ אֲמִתַּ֖י לֵאמֹֽר׃ də·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- yō·w·nāh ḇen- ’ă·mit·tay lê·mōrWLC · 1

“Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.”

𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉

ק֠וּם לֵ֧ךְ אֶל־ הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה הָעִ֥יר נִֽינְוֵ֛ה וּקְרָ֣א עָלֶ֑יהָ כִּֽי־ רָעָתָ֖ם עָלְתָ֥ה לְפָנָֽי׃ qūm lêḵ ’el- hag·gə·ḏō·w·lāh hā·‘îr nî·nə·wêh ū·qə·rā ‘ā·le·hā kî- rā·‘ā·ṯām ‘ā·lə·ṯāh lə·p̄ā·nāyWLC · 2

Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went aboard… to sail… for Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.

יוֹנָה֙ וַיָּ֤קָם לִבְרֹ֣חַ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֨רֶד יָפ֜וֹ וַיִּמְצָ֥א אָנִיָּ֣ה׀ בָּאָ֣ה תַרְשִׁ֗ישׁ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שְׂכָרָ֜הּ וַיֵּ֤רֶד בָּהּ֙ לָב֤וֹא עִמָּהֶם֙ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יְהוָֽה׃ yō·w·nāh way·yā·qām liḇ·rō·aḥ tar·šî·šāh mil·lip̄·nê Yah·weh way·yê·reḏ yā·p̄ōw way·yim·ṣā ʾå̄·nī·yå̄h bā·’āh ṯar·šîš way·yit·tên śə·ḵā·rāh way·yê·reḏ bāh lā·ḇō·w ‘im·mā·hem tar·šî·šāh mil·lip̄·nê Yah·wehWLC · 3

The Great Storm

Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship was in danger of breaking apart.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤈𐤉𐤋 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤎𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤓

וַֽיהוָ֗ה הֵטִ֤יל גְּדוֹלָה֙ רֽוּחַ־ אֶל־ הַיָּ֔ם גָּד֖וֹל סַֽעַר־ וַיְהִ֥י בַּיָּ֑ם וְהָ֣אֳנִיָּ֔ה חִשְּׁבָ֖ה לְהִשָּׁבֵֽר׃ Yah·weh hê·ṭîl gə·ḏō·w·lāh rū·aḥ- ’el- hay·yām gā·ḏō·wl sa·‘ar- way·hî bay·yām wə·hā·’o·nî·yāh ḥiš·šə·ḇāh lə·hiš·šā·ḇêrWLC · 4

The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

הַמַּלָּחִ֗ים וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ אִ֣ישׁ וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֮ אֶל־ אֱלֹהָיו֒ וַיָּטִ֨לוּ אֶת־ בָּֽאֳנִיָּה֙ הַכֵּלִ֜ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֶל־ הַיָּ֔ם לְהָקֵ֖ל מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְיוֹנָ֗ה יָרַד֙ אֶל־ יַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַסְּפִינָ֔ה וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב וַיֵּרָדַֽם׃ ham·mal·lā·ḥîm way·yî·rə·’ū ’îš way·yiz·‘ă·qū ’el- ’ĕ·lō·hāw way·yā·ṭi·lū ’eṯ- bā·’o·nî·yāh hak·kê·lîm ’ă·šer ’el- hay·yām lə·hā·qêl mê·‘ă·lê·hem wə·yō·w·nāh yā·raḏ ’el- yar·kə·ṯê has·sə·p̄î·nāh way·yiš·kaḇ way·yê·rā·ḏamWLC · 5

The captain… approached him and said “How can you sleep? Get up [and] call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”

𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤇𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤍𐤓𐤃𐤌 𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤕 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤀𐤁𐤃

רַ֣ב הַחֹבֵ֔ל וַיִּקְרַ֤ב אֵלָיו֙ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ מַה־ לְּךָ֣ נִרְדָּ֑ם ק֚וּם קְרָ֣א אֶל־ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אוּלַ֞י הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים יִתְעַשֵּׁ֧ת לָ֖נוּ וְלֹ֥א נֹאבֵֽד׃ raḇ ha·ḥō·ḇêl way·yiq·raḇ ’ê·lāw way·yō·mer lōw mah- lə·ḵā nir·dām qūm qə·rā ’el- ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ’ū·lay hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm yiṯ·‘aš·šêṯ lā·nū wə·lō nō·ḇêḏWLC · 6

“Come!” said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity that is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

לְכוּ֙ וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ אֶל־ אִ֣ישׁ רֵעֵ֗הוּ וְנַפִּ֣ילָה גֽוֹרָל֔וֹת וְנֵ֣דְעָ֔ה בְּשֶׁלְּמִ֛י הַזֹּ֖את הָרָעָ֥ה לָ֑נוּ וַיַּפִּ֙לוּ֙ גּֽוֹרָל֔וֹת הַגּוֹרָ֖ל וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־ יוֹנָֽה׃ lə·ḵū way·yō·mə·rū ’el- ’îš rê·‘ê·hū wə·nap·pî·lāh ḡō·w·rā·lō·wṯ wə·nê·ḏə·‘āh bə·šel·lə·mî haz·zōṯ hā·rā·‘āh lā·nū way·yap·pi·lū gō·w·rā·lō·wṯ hag·gō·w·rāl way·yip·pōl ‘al- yō·w·nāhWLC · 7

“Tell us now,” they demanded -, “who is to blame for this calamity that is upon us? What [is] your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who… are your people?”

𐤄𐤂𐤉𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤍𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤉 𐤌𐤆𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤌

הַגִּידָה־ לָ֔נוּ נָּ֣א וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֔יו לְמִי־ בַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר הַזֹּ֖את הָרָעָ֥ה לָ֑נוּ מַה־ מְּלַאכְתְּךָ֙ וּמֵאַ֣יִן תָּב֔וֹא מָ֣ה אַרְצֶ֔ךָ וְאֵֽי־ מִזֶּ֥ה אָֽתָּה׃ עַ֖ם hag·gî·ḏāh- lā·nū nā way·yō·mə·rū ’ê·lāw lə·mî- ba·’ă·šer haz·zōṯ hā·rā·‘āh lā·nū mah- mə·laḵ·tə·ḵā ū·mê·’a·yin tā·ḇō·w māh ’ar·ṣe·ḵā wə·’ê- miz·zeh ’āt·tāh ‘amWLC · 8

“I am a Hebrew,” replied Jonah… “I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”

𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤄

אָנֹ֑כִי וְאֶת־ עִבְרִ֣י וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם אֲנִ֣י יָרֵ֔א יְהוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ אֲשֶׁר־ עָשָׂ֥ה אֶת־ הַיָּ֖ם וְאֶת־ הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃ ’ā·nō·ḵî wə·’eṯ- ‘iḇ·rî way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem ’ă·nî yā·rê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê haš·šā·ma·yim ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śāh ’eṯ- hay·yām wə·’eṯ- hay·yab·bā·šāhWLC · 9

Then the men were even more afraid… and said to him, “What have you done?” The men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ גְדוֹלָ֔ה וַיִּֽירְא֤וּ יִרְאָ֣ה וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו מַה־ זֹּ֣את עָשִׂ֑יתָ כִּֽי־ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים יָדְע֣וּ כִּֽי־ ה֣וּא בֹרֵ֔חַ מִלִּפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ כִּ֥י הִגִּ֖יד לָהֶֽם׃ hā·’ă·nā·šîm ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh way·yî·rə·’ū yir·’āh way·yō·mə·rū ’ê·lāw mah- zōṯ ‘ā·śî·ṯā kî- hā·’ă·nā·šîm yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- hū ḇō·rê·aḥ mil·lip̄·nê Yah·weh kî hig·gîḏ lā·hemWLC · 10

Jonah Cast into the Sea

Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to [Jonah], “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤎𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤒 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅

כִּ֥י הַיָּ֖ם הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵֽר׃ וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ אֵלָיו֙ מַה־ נַּ֣עֲשֶׂה לָּ֔ךְ וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם מֵֽעָלֵ֑ינוּ kî hay·yām hō·w·lêḵ wə·sō·‘êr way·yō·mə·rū ’ê·lāw mah- na·‘ă·śeh lāḵ wə·yiš·tōq hay·yām mê·‘ā·lê·nūWLC · 11

“Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down for you. For I know that I am to blame for this violent storm that has come upon you.”

שָׂא֙וּנִי֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם וַהֲטִילֻ֣נִי אֶל־ הַיָּ֔ם הַיָּ֖ם וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י אָ֔נִי יוֹדֵ֣עַ כִּ֣י בְשֶׁלִּ֔י הַזֶּ֖ה הַגָּד֛וֹל הַסַּ֧עַר עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ śā·’ū·nî way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem wa·hă·ṭî·lu·nî ’el- hay·yām hay·yām wə·yiš·tōq mê·‘ă·lê·ḵem kî ’ā·nî yō·w·ḏê·a‘ kî ḇə·šel·lî haz·zeh hag·gā·ḏō·wl has·sa·‘ar ‘ă·lê·ḵemWLC · 12

Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea was raging against them more and more.

𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤕𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤎𐤏𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤊

הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים וַיַּחְתְּר֣וּ לְהָשִׁ֛יב אֶל־ הַיַּבָּשָׁ֖ה וְלֹ֣א יָכֹ֑לוּ כִּ֣י הַיָּ֔ם וְסֹעֵ֖ר עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ הוֹלֵ֥ךְ hā·’ă·nā·šîm way·yaḥ·tə·rū lə·hā·šîḇ ’el- hay·yab·bā·šāh wə·lō yā·ḵō·lū kî hay·yām wə·sō·‘êr ‘ă·lê·hem hō·w·lêḵWLC · 13

So they cried out to the LORD…: “Please, O LORD, do not… let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤀 𐤍𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤕𐤍 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤍𐤒𐤉𐤀 𐤃𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤕

וַיִּקְרְא֨וּ אֶל־ יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ אָנָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ אַל־ נָ֣א נֹאבְדָ֗ה הַזֶּ֔ה הָאִ֣ישׁ בְּנֶ֙פֶשׁ֙ וְאַל־ תִּתֵּ֥ן עָלֵ֖ינוּ נָקִ֑יא דָּ֣ם כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה עָשִֽׂיתָ׃ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר חָפַ֖צְתָּ way·yiq·rə·’ū ’el- Yah·weh way·yō·mə·rū ’ān·nāh Yah·weh ’al- nā nō·ḇə·ḏāh haz·zeh hā·’îš bə·ne·p̄eš wə·’al- tit·tên ‘ā·lê·nū nā·qî dām kî- ’at·tāh Yah·weh ‘ā·śî·ṯā ka·’ă·šer ḥā·p̄aṣ·tāWLC · 14

Then they picked up Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the raging sea grew calm.

וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־ יוֹנָ֔ה וַיְטִלֻ֖הוּ אֶל־ הַיָּ֑ם מִזַּעְפּֽוֹ׃ הַיָּ֖ם וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד way·yiś·’ū ’eṯ- yō·w·nāh way·ṭi·lu·hū ’el- hay·yām miz·za‘·pōw hay·yām way·ya·‘ă·mōḏWLC · 15

Then the men… feared the LORD greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows [to Him].
