Chapter 2

Woe to Oppressors

1

Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they accomplish it because the power is in their hands.

𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤓𐤏 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤃𐤌

ה֧וֹי חֹֽשְׁבֵי־ אָ֛וֶן וּפֹ֥עֲלֵי רָ֖ע עַל־ מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָ֑ם הַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ בְּא֤וֹר יַעֲשׂ֔וּהָ כִּ֥י לְאֵ֖ל יֶשׁ־ יָדָֽם׃ hō·w ḥō·šə·ḇê- ’ā·wen ū·p̄ō·‘ă·lê rā‘ ‘al- miš·kə·ḇō·w·ṯām hab·bō·qer bə·’ō·wr ya·‘ă·śū·hā kî lə·’êl yeš- yā·ḏāmWLC · 1

They covet fields and seize them; they take away houses. They deprive a man of his home, a fellow man of his inheritance.

𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤔𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤂𐤆𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤒𐤅 𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕𐤅𐤐

וְחָמְד֤וּ שָׂדוֹת֙ וְגָזָ֔לוּ וְנָשָׂ֑אוּ וּבָתִּ֖ים וְעָֽשְׁקוּ֙ גֶּ֣בֶר וּבֵית֔וֹ וְאִ֖ישׁ וְנַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃פ wə·ḥā·mə·ḏū śā·ḏō·wṯ wə·ḡā·zā·lū wə·nā·śā·’ū ū·ḇāt·tîm wə·‘ā·šə·qū ge·ḇer ū·ḇê·ṯōw wə·’îš wə·na·ḥă·lā·ṯōwWLC · 2

Therefore this is what the LORD… says: “I am planning against this nation a disaster from which you cannot free your necks. Then you will not walk so proudly, for it will be a time of calamity.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤔𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤄 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤅 𐤑𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤏𐤕 𐤓𐤏𐤄

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה הִנְנִ֥י אָמַ֣ר חֹשֵׁ֛ב עַל־ הַזֹּ֖את הַמִּשְׁפָּחָ֥ה רָעָ֑ה מִשָּׁ֜ם אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹֽא־ תָמִ֨ישׁוּ צַוְּארֹֽתֵיכֶ֗ם וְלֹ֤א תֵֽלְכוּ֙ רוֹמָ֔ה כִּ֛י הִֽיא׃ עֵ֥ת רָעָ֖ה lā·ḵên kōh Yah·weh hin·nî ’ā·mar ḥō·šêḇ ‘al- haz·zōṯ ham·miš·pā·ḥāh rā·‘āh miš·šām ’ă·šer lō- ṯā·mî·šū ṣaw·wə·rō·ṯê·ḵem wə·lō ṯê·lə·ḵū rō·w·māh kî hî ‘êṯ rā·‘āhWLC · 3

In that day they will take up a proverb against you and taunt you with this bitter lamentation -: ‘We are utterly ruined…! He has changed the portion of my people. How He has removed [it] from me! He has allotted our fields to traitors.’”

𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤄𐤄 𐤍𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤍𐤔𐤃𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤓 𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤁

הַה֜וּא בַּיּ֨וֹם יִשָּׂ֧א מָשָׁ֗ל עֲלֵיכֶ֣ם וְנָהָ֨ה נִֽהְיָה֙ נְהִ֤י אָמַר֙ שָׁד֣וֹד נְשַׁדֻּ֔נוּ יָמִ֑יר חֵ֥לֶק עַמִּ֖י אֵ֚יךְ יָמִ֣ישׁ לִ֔י יְחַלֵּֽק׃ שָׂדֵ֖ינוּ לְשׁוֹבֵ֥ב ha·hū bay·yō·wm yiś·śā mā·šāl ‘ă·lê·ḵem wə·nā·hāh nih·yāh nə·hî ’ā·mar šā·ḏō·wḏ nə·šad·du·nū yā·mîr ḥê·leq ‘am·mî ’êḵ yā·mîš lî yə·ḥal·lêq śā·ḏê·nū lə·šō·w·ḇêḇWLC · 4

Therefore, you will have no one in the assembly of the LORD to divide the land by lot.

לָכֵן֙ יִֽהְיֶ֣ה לְךָ֔ לֹֽא־ בִּקְהַ֖ל יְהוָֽה׃ מַשְׁלִ֥יךְ חֶ֖בֶל בְּגוֹרָ֑ל lā·ḵên yih·yeh lə·ḵā lō- biq·hal Yah·weh maš·lîḵ ḥe·ḇel bə·ḡō·w·rālWLC · 5

Reproof of False Prophets

“Do not preach,” they preach. “Do not preach these things; disgrace will not overtake us.”

𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤈𐤐𐤅 𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤈𐤐𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤊𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤂

אַל־ תַּטִּ֖פוּ יַטִּיפ֑וּן לֹֽא־ יַטִּ֣פוּ לָאֵ֔לֶּה כְּלִמּֽוֹת׃ לֹ֥א יִסַּ֖ג ’al- taṭ·ṭi·p̄ū yaṭ·ṭî·p̄ūn lō- yaṭ·ṭi·p̄ū lā·’êl·leh kə·lim·mō·wṯ lō yis·saḡWLC · 6

Should it be said, O house of Jacob, “Is the Spirit of the LORD… impatient? Are these the things He does?” Do not My words bring good to him who walks uprightly?

𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤑𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤓

הֶאָמ֣וּר בֵּֽית־ יַעֲקֹ֗ב ר֣וּחַ יְהוָ֔ה אִם־ הֲקָצַר֙ אֵ֖לֶּה מַעֲלָלָ֑יו הֲל֤וֹא דְבָרַ֨י יֵיטִ֔יבוּ עִ֖ם הוֹלֵֽךְ׃ הַיָּשָׁ֥ר he·’ā·mūr bêṯ- ya·‘ă·qōḇ rū·aḥ Yah·weh ’im- hă·qā·ṣar ’êl·leh ma·‘ă·lā·lāw hă·lō·w ḏə·ḇā·ray yê·ṭî·ḇū ‘im hō·w·lêḵ hay·yā·šārWLC · 7

But of late My people have risen up… like an enemy: You strip off the splendid robe from unsuspecting passersby like men returning from battle.

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤅𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁 𐤕𐤐𐤔𐤈𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤈𐤇 𐤌𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄

וְאֶתְמ֗וּל עַמִּי֙ יְקוֹמֵ֔ם מִמּ֣וּל לְאוֹיֵ֣ב תַּפְשִׁט֑וּן אֶ֖דֶר שַׂלְמָ֔ה בֶּ֔טַח מֵעֹבְרִ֣ים שׁוּבֵ֖י מִלְחָמָֽה׃ wə·’eṯ·mūl ‘am·mî yə·qō·w·mêm mim·mūl lə·’ō·w·yêḇ tap̄·ši·ṭūn ’e·ḏer śal·māh be·ṭaḥ mê·‘ō·ḇə·rîm šū·ḇê mil·ḥā·māhWLC · 8

You drive the women of My people from their pleasant homes. You take away My blessing from their children forever.

𐤕𐤂𐤓𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤕𐤏𐤍𐤂𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤕𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌

תְּגָ֣רְשׁ֔וּן נְשֵׁ֤י עַמִּי֙ תַּֽעֲנֻגֶ֑יהָ מִבֵּ֖ית תִּקְח֥וּ הֲדָרִ֖י מֵעַל֙ עֹֽלָלֶ֔יהָ לְעוֹלָֽם׃ tə·ḡā·rə·šūn nə·šê ‘am·mî ta·‘ă·nu·ḡe·hā mib·bêṯ tiq·ḥū hă·ḏā·rî mê·‘al ‘ō·lā·le·hā lə·‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 9

Arise and depart, for this is not your place of rest, because its defilement brings destruction— a grievous destruction!

𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤕𐤇𐤁𐤋 𐤍𐤌𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤇𐤁𐤋

ק֣וּמוּ וּלְכ֔וּ כִּ֥י זֹ֖את לֹא־ הַמְּנוּחָ֑ה בַּעֲב֥וּר טָמְאָ֛ה תְּחַבֵּ֖ל נִמְרָֽץ׃ וְחֶ֥בֶל qū·mū ū·lə·ḵū kî zōṯ lō- ham·mə·nū·ḥāh ba·‘ă·ḇūr ṭā·mə·’āh tə·ḥab·bêl nim·rāṣ wə·ḥe·ḇelWLC · 10

If a man of wind were to come and say falsely, “I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,” he would be just the preacher for this people!

𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤆𐤁 𐤅𐤔𐤒𐤓 𐤀𐤈𐤐 𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤊𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤈𐤉𐤐 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌

לוּ־ אִ֞ישׁ ר֙וּחַ֙ הֹלֵ֥ךְ כִּזֵּ֔ב וָשֶׁ֣קֶר אַטִּ֣ף לְךָ֔ לַיַּ֖יִן וְלַשֵּׁכָ֑ר וְהָיָ֥ה מַטִּ֖יף הַזֶּֽה׃ הָעָ֥ם lū- ’îš rū·aḥ hō·lêḵ kiz·zêḇ wā·še·qer ’aṭ·ṭip̄ lə·ḵā lay·ya·yin wə·laš·šê·ḵār wə·hā·yāh maṭ·ṭîp̄ haz·zeh hā·‘āmWLC · 11

The Remnant of Israel

I will surely gather… all of you, O Jacob; I will collect… the remnant of Israel. I will bring them together like sheep in a pen, like a flock in the midst of its pasture— a noisy throng.

אָסֹ֨ף אֶאֱסֹ֜ף כֻּלָּ֗ךְ יַעֲקֹ֣ב קַבֵּ֤ץ אֲקַבֵּץ֙ שְׁאֵרִ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשִׂימֶ֖נּוּ יַ֥חַד כְּצֹ֣אן בָּצְרָ֑ה כְּעֵ֙דֶר֙ בְּת֣וֹךְ הַדָּֽבְר֔וֹ תְּהִימֶ֖נָה מֵאָדָֽם׃ ’ā·sōp̄ ’e·’ĕ·sōp̄ kul·lāḵ ya·‘ă·qōḇ qab·bêṣ ’ă·qab·bêṣ šə·’ê·rîṯ yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·śî·men·nū ya·ḥaḏ kə·ṣōn bāṣ·rāh kə·‘ê·ḏer bə·ṯō·wḵ had·dā·ḇə·rōw tə·hî·me·nāh mê·’ā·ḏāmWLC · 12

One who breaks open the way will go up before them; they will break through the gate, and go out by it. Their King will pass through before them, the LORD as their leader.
