The Burden against Nineveh

This is the burden against Nineveh, the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:

The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and full of wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on His foes and reserves [wrath] for His enemies.

The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will by no means leave the guilty unpunished… His path is in the whirlwind and storm, and clouds are the dust beneath His feet.

He rebukes the sea and dries it up; He makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither, and the flower of Lebanon wilts.

גּוֹעֵ֤ר בַּיָּם֙ וַֽיַּבְּשֵׁ֔הוּ וְכָל־ הַנְּהָר֖וֹת הֶֽחֱרִ֑יב בָּשָׁן֙ וְכַרְמֶ֔ל אֻמְלַ֤ל וּפֶ֥רַח לְבָנ֖וֹן אֻמְלָֽל׃ gō·w·‘êr bay·yām way·yab·bə·šê·hū wə·ḵāl han·nə·hā·rō·wṯ he·ḥĕ·rîḇ bā·šān wə·ḵar·mel ’um·lal ū·p̄e·raḥ lə·ḇā·nō·wn ’um·lāl — WLC · 4

The mountains quake before Him, and the hills melt away; the earth trembles at His presence— the world and all its dwellers…

הָרִים֙ רָעֲשׁ֣וּ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ וְהַגְּבָע֖וֹת הִתְמֹגָ֑גוּ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ וַתִּשָּׂ֤א מִפָּנָ֔יו וְתֵבֵ֖ל וְכָל־ יֹ֥שְׁבֵי בָֽהּ׃ hā·rîm rā·‘ă·šū mim·men·nū wə·hag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ hiṯ·mō·ḡā·ḡū hā·’ā·reṣ wat·tiś·śā mip·pā·nāw wə·ṯê·ḇêl wə·ḵāl yō·šə·ḇê ḇāh — WLC · 5

Who can withstand… His indignation? Who can endure His burning anger…? His wrath is poured out like fire; even rocks are shattered before Him.

מִ֣י לִפְנֵ֤י יַֽעֲמ֔וֹד זַעְמוֹ֙ וּמִ֥י יָק֖וּם בַּחֲר֣וֹן אַפּ֑וֹ חֲמָתוֹ֙ נִתְּכָ֣ה כָאֵ֔שׁ וְהַצֻּרִ֖ים נִתְּצ֥וּ מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ mî lip̄·nê ya·‘ă·mō·wḏ za‘·mōw ū·mî yā·qūm ba·ḥă·rō·wn ’ap·pōw ḥă·mā·ṯōw nit·tə·ḵāh ḵā·’êš wə·haṣ·ṣu·rîm nit·tə·ṣū mim·men·nū — WLC · 6

The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤆 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤑𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤇𐤎𐤉 𐤁𐤅
יְהוָ֔ה ט֣וֹב לְמָע֖וֹז בְּי֣וֹם צָרָ֑ה וְיֹדֵ֖עַ חֹ֥סֵי בֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh ṭō·wḇ lə·mā·‘ō·wz bə·yō·wm ṣā·rāh wə·yō·ḏê·a‘ ḥō·sê ḇōw — WLC · 7

But with an overwhelming flood He will make an end [of Nineveh] and pursue His enemies into darkness.
𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤈𐤐 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤇𐤔𐤊
עֹבֵ֔ר וּבְשֶׁ֣טֶף יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה כָּלָ֖ה מְקוֹמָ֑הּ יְרַדֶּף־ וְאֹיְבָ֖יו חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ ‘ō·ḇêr ū·ḇə·še·ṭep̄ ya·‘ă·śeh kā·lāh mə·qō·w·māh yə·rad·dep̄- wə·’ō·yə·ḇāw ḥō·šeḵ — WLC · 8

Whatever you plot against the LORD, He will bring to an end. Affliction will not rise up a second time.

מַה־ תְּחַשְּׁבוּן֙ אֶל־ יְהוָ֔ה ה֣וּא עֹשֶׂ֑ה כָּלָ֖ה צָרָֽה׃ לֹֽא־ תָק֥וּם פַּעֲמַ֖יִם mah- tə·ḥaš·šə·ḇūn ’el- Yah·weh hū ‘ō·śeh kā·lāh ṣā·rāh lō- ṯā·qūm pa·‘ă·ma·yim — WLC · 9

For they will be entangled as with thorns and consumed like the drink of a drunkard— like stubble that is fully dry.

כִּ֚י סְבֻכִ֔ים עַד־ סִירִ֣ים אֻ֨כְּל֔וּ וּכְסָבְאָ֖ם סְבוּאִ֑ים כְּקַ֥שׁ מָלֵֽא׃ יָבֵ֖שׁ kî sə·ḇu·ḵîm ‘aḏ- sî·rîm ’uk·kə·lū ū·ḵə·sā·ḇə·’ām sə·ḇū·’îm kə·qaš mā·lê yā·ḇêš — WLC · 10

From you, [O Nineveh], comes forth a plotter of evil against the LORD, a counselor of wickedness.
𐤌𐤌𐤊 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤇𐤔𐤁 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤑 𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤎
מִמֵּ֣ךְ יָצָ֔א חֹשֵׁ֥ב רָעָ֑ה עַל־ יְהוָ֖ה יֹעֵ֖ץ בְּלִיָּֽעַל׃ס mim·mêḵ yā·ṣā ḥō·šêḇ rā·‘āh ‘al- Yah·weh yō·‘êṣ bə·lî·yā·‘al — WLC · 11

This is what the LORD says: “Though they are allied… and numerous, yet they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, [O Judah], I will afflict you no longer.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤍 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤍 𐤍𐤂𐤆𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤏𐤍𐤕𐤊 𐤀𐤏𐤍𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃
כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר אִם־ שְׁלֵמִים֙ וְכֵ֣ן רַבִּ֔ים וְכֵ֥ן נָגֹ֖זּוּ וְעָבָ֑ר וְעִ֨נִּתִ֔ךְ אֲעַנֵּ֖ךְ לֹ֥א עֽוֹד׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’im- šə·lê·mîm wə·ḵên rab·bîm wə·ḵên nā·ḡōz·zū wə·‘ā·ḇār wə·‘in·ni·ṯiḵ ’ă·‘an·nêḵ lō ‘ō·wḏ — WLC · 12

For I will now break their yoke from your neck and tear away your shackles.”

וְעַתָּ֕ה אֶשְׁבֹּ֥ר מֹטֵ֖הוּ מֵֽעָלָ֑יִךְ אֲנַתֵּֽק׃ וּמוֹסְרֹתַ֖יִךְ wə·‘at·tāh ’eš·bōr mō·ṭê·hū mê·‘ā·lā·yiḵ ’ă·nat·têq ū·mō·ws·rō·ṯa·yiḵ — WLC · 13

The LORD has issued a command concerning you, [O Nineveh]: “There will be no descendants to carry on your name… I will cut off the carved image and cast idol from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.”

יְהוָ֔ה וְצִוָּ֤ה עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ לֹֽא־ יִזָּרַ֥ע מִשִּׁמְךָ֖ ע֑וֹד אַכְרִ֨ית פֶּ֧סֶל וּמַסֵּכָ֛ה מִבֵּ֨ית אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ אָשִׂ֥ים קִבְרֶ֖ךָ כִּ֥י קַלּֽוֹתָ׃פ Yah·weh wə·ṣiw·wāh ‘ā·le·ḵā lō- yiz·zā·ra‘ miš·šim·ḵā ‘ō·wḏ ’aḵ·rîṯ pe·sel ū·mas·sê·ḵāh mib·bêṯ ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ’ā·śîm qiḇ·re·ḵā kî qal·lō·w·ṯā — WLC · 14

Look to the mountains— the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; fulfill your vows. For the wicked will never again… march through you; they will be utterly cut off.

הִנֵּ֨ה עַל־ הֶהָרִ֜ים רַגְלֵ֤י מְבַשֵּׂר֙ מַשְׁמִ֣יעַ שָׁל֔וֹם חָגִּ֧י חַגַּ֖יִךְ יְהוּדָ֛ה שַׁלְּמִ֣י נְדָרָ֑יִךְ כִּי֩ בְּלִיַּ֖עַל לֹ֨א יוֹסִ֥יף ע֛וֹד לַעֲבוֹר בָּ֥ךְ כֻּלֹּ֥ה נִכְרָֽת׃ hin·nêh ‘al- he·hā·rîm raḡ·lê mə·ḇaś·śêr maš·mî·a‘ šā·lō·wm ḥāg·gî ḥag·ga·yiḵ yə·hū·ḏāh šal·lə·mî nə·ḏā·rā·yiḵ kî bə·lî·ya·‘al lō yō·w·sîp̄ ‘ō·wḏ la·ʿă·ḇōr bāḵ kul·lōh niḵ·rāṯ — WLC · 15
