Chapter 2
The LORD Answers Again
1
I will stand at my guard post and station myself on the ramparts. I will watch to see what He will say to me, and how I should answer when corrected.

אֶעֱמֹ֔דָה עַל־ מִשְׁמַרְתִּ֣י וְאֶֽתְיַצְּבָ֖ה עַל־ מָצ֑וֹר וַאֲצַפֶּ֗ה לִרְאוֹת֙ מַה־ יְדַבֶּר־ בִּ֔י וּמָ֥ה אָשִׁ֖יב עַל־ תּוֹכַחְתִּֽי׃ ’e·‘ĕ·mō·ḏāh ‘al- miš·mar·tî wə·’eṯ·yaṣ·ṣə·ḇāh ‘al- mā·ṣō·wr wa·’ă·ṣap·peh lir·’ō·wṯ mah- yə·ḏab·ber- bî ū·māh ’ā·šîḇ ‘al- tō·w·ḵaḥ·tî — WLC · 1

Then the LORD… answered me: “Write down this vision and clearly inscribe it on tablets, so that a herald may run with it.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤕𐤅𐤁 𐤇𐤆𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤒𐤅𐤓𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤑 𐤁𐤅
יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֔אמֶר וַיַּעֲנֵ֤נִי כְּת֣וֹב חָז֔וֹן וּבָאֵ֖ר עַל־ הַלֻּח֑וֹת לְמַ֥עַן ק֥וֹרֵא יָר֖וּץ בֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer way·ya·‘ă·nê·nî kə·ṯō·wḇ ḥā·zō·wn ū·ḇā·’êr ‘al- hal·lu·ḥō·wṯ lə·ma·‘an qō·w·rê yā·rūṣ ḇōw — WLC · 2

For the vision awaits an appointed time; it testifies of the end and does not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it, since it will surely come… and will not delay.

כִּ֣י חָזוֹן֙ ע֤וֹד לַמּוֹעֵ֔ד וְיָפֵ֥חַ לַקֵּ֖ץ וְלֹ֣א יְכַזֵּ֑ב אִם־ יִתְמַהְמָהּ֙ חַכֵּה־ ל֔וֹ כִּֽי־ בֹ֥א יָבֹ֖א לֹ֥א יְאַחֵֽר׃ kî ḥā·zō·wn ‘ō·wḏ lam·mō·w·‘êḏ wə·yā·p̄ê·aḥ laq·qêṣ wə·lō yə·ḵaz·zêḇ ’im- yiṯ·mah·māh ḥak·kêh- lōw kî- ḇō yā·ḇō lō yə·’a·ḥêr — WLC · 3

Look at the proud one; his soul… is not upright but the righteous will live by faith

הִנֵּ֣ה עֻפְּלָ֔ה נַפְשׁ֖וֹ בּ֑וֹ לֹא־ יָשְׁרָ֥ה וְצַדִּ֖יק יִחְיֶֽה׃ בֶּאֱמוּנָת֥וֹ hin·nêh ‘up·pə·lāh nap̄·šōw bōw lō- yā·šə·rāh wə·ṣad·dîq yiḥ·yeh be·’ĕ·mū·nā·ṯōw — WLC · 4

and wealth indeed… betrays him. [He is] an arrogant man never at rest. He enlarges his appetite like Sheol, and like Death, he is never satisfied. He gathers all the nations to himself and collects all the peoples as his own.

Woe to the Chaldeans

Will not all of these take up a taunt against him, speaking with mockery and derision: ‘Woe to him who amasses what is not his and makes himself rich with many loans! How long will this go on?’

הֲלוֹא־ כֻלָּ֗ם אֵ֣לֶּה יִשָּׂ֔אוּ מָשָׁ֣ל עָלָיו֙ ל֑וֹ וְיֹאמַ֗ר וּמְלִיצָ֖ה חִיד֣וֹת ה֚וֹי הַמַּרְבֶּ֣ה לֹּא־ ל֔וֹ וּמַכְבִּ֥יד עָלָ֖יו עַבְטִֽיט׃ עַד־ מָתַ֕י hă·lō·w- ḵul·lām ’êl·leh yiś·śā·’ū mā·šāl ‘ā·lāw lōw wə·yō·mar ū·mə·lî·ṣāh ḥî·ḏō·wṯ hō·w ham·mar·beh lō- lōw ū·maḵ·bîḏ ‘ā·lāw ‘aḇ·ṭîṭ ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay — WLC · 6

Will not your creditors suddenly arise and those who disturb you awaken? Then you will become their prey

הֲל֣וֹא נֹשְׁכֶ֔יךָ פֶ֗תַע יָק֙וּמוּ֙ מְזַעְזְעֶ֑יךָ וְיִקְצ֖וּ וְהָיִ֥יתָ לִמְשִׁסּ֖וֹת לָֽמוֹ׃ hă·lō·w nō·šə·ḵe·ḵā p̄e·ṯa‘ yā·qū·mū mə·za‘·zə·‘e·ḵā wə·yiq·ṣū wə·hā·yî·ṯā lim·šis·sō·wṯ lā·mōw — WLC · 7

Because you have plundered many nations, vvv the remnant of the people will plunder you— because of your bloodshed against man and your violence against the land, the city, and all their dwellers…

כִּֽי אַתָּ֤ה שַׁלּ֙וֹתָ֙ רַבִּ֔ים גּוֹיִ֣ם כָּל־ יֶ֣תֶר עַמִּ֑ים יְשָׁלּ֖וּךָ מִדְּמֵ֤י אָדָם֙ וַחֲמַס־ אֶ֔רֶץ קִרְיָ֖ה וְכָל־ יֹ֥שְׁבֵי בָֽהּ׃פ kī ’at·tāh šal·lō·w·ṯā rab·bîm gō·w·yim kāl- ye·ṯer ‘am·mîm yə·šāl·lū·ḵā mid·də·mê ’ā·ḏām wa·ḥă·mas- ’e·reṣ qir·yāh wə·ḵāl yō·šə·ḇê ḇāh — WLC · 8

Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, to place his nest on high [and] escape the hand of disaster!

ה֗וֹי בֹּצֵ֛עַ לְבֵית֑וֹ רָ֖ע בֶּ֥צַע לָשׂ֤וּם קִנּ֔וֹ בַּמָּרוֹם֙ לְהִנָּצֵ֖ל מִכַּף־ רָֽע׃ hō·w bō·ṣê·a‘ lə·ḇê·ṯōw rā‘ be·ṣa‘ lā·śūm qin·nōw bam·mā·rō·wm lə·hin·nā·ṣêl mik·kap̄- rā‘ — WLC · 9

You have plotted shame for your house by cutting off many peoples and forfeiting your life.

יָעַ֥צְתָּ בֹּ֖שֶׁת לְבֵיתֶ֑ךָ קְצוֹת־ רַבִּ֖ים עַמִּ֥ים וְחוֹטֵ֥א נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃ yā·‘aṣ·tā bō·šeṯ lə·ḇê·ṯe·ḵā qə·ṣō·wṯ- rab·bîm ‘am·mîm wə·ḥō·w·ṭê nap̄·še·ḵā — WLC · 10

For the stones will cry out from the wall, and the rafters will echo it from the woodwork.

Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and establishes a town by iniquity!

Is it not indeed from the LORD of Hosts that the labor of the people only feeds the fire, and the nations weary themselves in vain?

הֲל֣וֹא הִנֵּ֔ה מֵאֵ֖ת יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת וְיִֽיגְע֤וּ עַמִּים֙ בְּדֵי־ אֵ֔שׁ וּלְאֻמִּ֖ים יִעָֽפוּ׃ בְּדֵי־ רִ֥יק hă·lō·w hin·nêh mê·’êṯ Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ wə·yî·ḡə·‘ū ‘am·mîm bə·ḏê- ’êš ū·lə·’um·mîm yi·‘ā·p̄ū bə·ḏê- rîq — WLC · 13

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover… the sea.

Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin until they are drunk, in order to gaze at their nakedness!

ה֚וֹי מַשְׁקֵ֣ה רֵעֵ֔הוּ מְסַפֵּ֥חַ חֲמָתְךָ֖ וְאַ֣ף שַׁכֵּ֑ר לְמַ֥עַן הַבִּ֖יט עַל־ מְעוֹרֵיהֶֽם׃ hō·w maš·qêh rê·‘ê·hū mə·sap·pê·aḥ ḥă·mā·ṯə·ḵā wə·’ap̄ šak·kêr lə·ma·‘an hab·bîṭ ‘al- mə·‘ō·w·rê·hem — WLC · 15

You will be filled with shame instead of glory. You too must drink and expose your uncircumcision! The cup in the LORD’s right hand will come around to you, and utter disgrace… will cover your glory.

שָׂבַ֤עְתָּ קָלוֹן֙ מִכָּב֔וֹד אַ֖תָּה גַם־ שְׁתֵ֥ה וְהֵֽעָרֵ֑ל כּ֚וֹס יְהוָ֔ה יְמִ֣ין תִּסּ֣וֹב עָלֶ֗יךָ וְקִיקָל֖וֹן עַל־ כְּבוֹדֶֽךָ׃ śā·ḇa‘·tā qā·lō·wn mik·kā·ḇō·wḏ ’at·tāh ḡam- šə·ṯêh wə·hê·‘ā·rêl kō·ws Yah·weh yə·mîn tis·sō·wḇ ‘ā·le·ḵā wə·qî·qā·lō·wn ‘al- kə·ḇō·w·ḏe·ḵā — WLC · 16

For your violence against Lebanon will overwhelm you, and the destruction of animals will terrify you, because of your bloodshed against men and your violence against the land, the city, and all their dwellers…

כִּ֣י חֲמַ֤ס לְבָנוֹן֙ יְכַסֶּ֔ךָּ וְשֹׁ֥ד בְּהֵמ֖וֹת יְחִיתַ֑ן מִדְּמֵ֤י אָדָם֙ וַחֲמַס־ אֶ֔רֶץ קִרְיָ֖ה וְכָל־ יֹ֥שְׁבֵי בָֽהּ׃ס kî ḥă·mas lə·ḇā·nō·wn yə·ḵas·se·kā wə·šōḏ bə·hê·mō·wṯ yə·ḥî·ṯan mid·də·mê ’ā·ḏām wa·ḥă·mas- ’e·reṣ qir·yāh wə·ḵāl yō·šə·ḇê ḇāh — WLC · 17

What use is an idol, that a craftsman should carve it— [or] an image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own creation…; he makes idols that cannot speak.

מָֽה־ הוֹעִ֣יל פֶּ֗סֶל כִּ֤י יֹֽצְר֔וֹ פְסָלוֹ֙ מַסֵּכָ֖ה וּמ֣וֹרֶה שָּׁ֑קֶר כִּ֣י יֹצֵ֤ר בָטַ֞ח יִצְרוֹ֙ עָלָ֔יו לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת אֱלִילִ֥ים אִלְּמִֽים׃ס māh- hō·w·‘îl pe·sel kî yō·ṣə·rōw p̄ə·sā·lōw mas·sê·ḵāh ū·mō·w·reh šā·qer kî yō·ṣêr ḇā·ṭaḥ yiṣ·rōw ‘ā·lāw la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ’ĕ·lî·lîm ’il·lə·mîm — WLC · 18

Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Awake!’ or to silent stone, ‘Arise!’ Can it give guidance? Behold, it [is] overlaid with gold and silver, yet there is no breath in it at all.”
