Chapter 1

A Call to Rebuild the Temple

In the second year of the reign of Darius, on the first… day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, stating

𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤔 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤇𐤂𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤆𐤓𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

שְׁתַּ֙יִם֙ בִּשְׁנַ֤ת הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לְדָרְיָ֣וֶשׁ אֶחָ֖ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ בְּי֥וֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁ֔י בַּחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ דְבַר־ יְהוָ֜ה הָיָ֨ה בְּיַד־ חַגַּ֣י הַנָּבִ֗יא אֶל־ זְרֻבָּבֶ֤ל בֶּן־ שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵל֙ פַּחַ֣ת יְהוּדָ֔ה וְאֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֧עַ בֶּן־ יְהוֹצָדָ֛ק הַגָּד֖וֹל הַכֹּהֵ֥ן לֵאמֹֽר׃ šə·ta·yim biš·naṯ ham·me·leḵ lə·ḏā·rə·yā·weš ’e·ḥāḏ la·ḥō·ḏeš bə·yō·wm haš·šiš·šî ba·ḥō·ḏeš ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh bə·yaḏ- ḥag·gay han·nā·ḇî ’el- zə·rub·bā·ḇel ben- šə·’al·tî·’êl pa·ḥaṯ yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ben- yə·hō·w·ṣā·ḏāq hag·gā·ḏō·wl hak·kō·hên lê·mōrWLC · 1

that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “These… people say, ‘The time has not yet come… to rebuild the house of the LORD.’”

כֹּ֥ה יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת אָמַ֛ר הַזֶּה֙ אָֽמְר֔וּ הָעָ֤ם לֵאמֹ֑ר עֶת־ לֹ֥א בֹּ֛א עֶת־ לְהִבָּנֽוֹת׃פ בֵּ֥ית יְהוָ֖ה kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar haz·zeh ’ā·mə·rū hā·‘ām lê·mōr ‘eṯ- lō bō ‘eṯ- lə·hib·bā·nō·wṯ bêṯ Yah·wehWLC · 2

Then the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying:

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤇𐤂𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיְהִי֙ בְּיַד־ חַגַּ֥י הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹֽר׃ də·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî bə·yaḏ- ḥag·gay han·nā·ḇî lê·mōrWLC · 3

“Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?”

𐤄𐤏𐤕 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤎𐤐𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤇𐤓𐤁

הַעֵ֤ת לָכֶם֙ אַתֶּ֔ם לָשֶׁ֖בֶת סְפוּנִ֑ים בְּבָתֵּיכֶ֣ם הַזֶּ֖ה וְהַבַּ֥יִת חָרֵֽב׃ ha·‘êṯ lā·ḵem ’at·tem lā·še·ḇeṯ sə·p̄ū·nîm bə·ḇāt·tê·ḵem haz·zeh wə·hab·ba·yiṯ ḥā·rêḇWLC · 4

Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully… your ways.

𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤊𐤌

וְעַתָּ֕ה כֹּ֥ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אָמַ֖ר שִׂ֥ימוּ לְבַבְכֶ֖ם עַל־ דַּרְכֵיכֶֽם׃ wə·‘at·tāh kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar śî·mū lə·ḇaḇ·ḵem ‘al- dar·ḵê·ḵemWLC · 5

You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough. You drink but never have your fill. You put on clothes but never get warm You earn wages… to put into a bag pierced through.”

זְרַעְתֶּ֨ם הַרְבֵּ֜ה וְהָבֵ֣א מְעָ֗ט אָכ֤וֹל וְאֵין־ לְשָׂבְעָה֙ שָׁת֣וֹ וְאֵין־ לְשָׁכְרָ֔ה לָב֖וֹשׁ וְאֵין־ לְחֹ֣ם ל֑וֹ וְהַ֨מִּשְׂתַּכֵּ֔ר מִשְׂתַּכֵּ֖ר אֶל־ צְר֥וֹר נָקֽוּב׃פ zə·ra‘·tem har·bêh wə·hā·ḇê mə·‘āṭ ’ā·ḵō·wl wə·’ên- lə·śā·ḇə·‘āh šā·ṯōw wə·’ên- lə·šā·ḵə·rāh lā·ḇō·wōš wə·’ên- lə·ḥōm lōw wə·ham·miś·tak·kêr miś·tak·kêr ’el- ṣə·rō·wr nā·qūḇWLC · 6

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully… your ways.

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤊𐤌

כֹּ֥ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אָמַ֖ר שִׂ֥ימוּ לְבַבְכֶ֖ם עַל־ דַּרְכֵיכֶֽם׃ kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar śî·mū lə·ḇaḇ·ḵem ‘al- dar·ḵê·ḵemWLC · 7

Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified, says the LORD.

𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤄𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤑 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

עֲל֥וּ הָהָ֛ר וַהֲבֵאתֶ֥ם עֵ֖ץ וּבְנ֣וּ הַבָּ֑יִת וְאֶרְצֶה־ בּ֥וֹ וְאֶכָּבֵד אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ ‘ă·lū hā·hār wa·hă·ḇê·ṯem ‘êṣ ū·ḇə·nū hab·bā·yiṯ wə·’er·ṣeh- bōw wə·ʾɛk·kå̄·ḇēḏ ’ā·mar Yah·wehWLC · 8

You expected… much, but behold, it amounted to little. And what you brought home, I blew away Why…? declares the LORD of Hosts. Because My house - [still lies] in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.

𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤓𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅

פָּנֹ֤ה אֶל־ הַרְבֵּה֙ וְהִנֵּ֣ה לִמְעָ֔ט וַהֲבֵאתֶ֥ם הַבַּ֖יִת וְנָפַ֣חְתִּי ב֑וֹ יַ֣עַן מֶ֗ה נְאֻם֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת יַ֗עַן בֵּיתִי֙ אֲשֶׁר־ ה֣וּא חָרֵ֔ב אִ֥ישׁ וְאַתֶּ֥ם רָצִ֖ים לְבֵיתֽוֹ׃ pā·nōh ’el- har·bêh wə·hin·nêh lim·‘āṭ wa·hă·ḇê·ṯem hab·ba·yiṯ wə·nā·p̄aḥ·tî ḇōw ya·‘an meh nə·’um Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ya·‘an bê·ṯî ’ă·šer- hū ḥā·rêḇ ’îš wə·’at·tem rā·ṣîm lə·ḇê·ṯōwWLC · 9

Therefore,… on account of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth has withheld its crops.

𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤈𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤋𐤄

עַל־ כֵּ֣ן עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם שָמַ֖יִם כָּלְא֥וּ מִטָּ֑ל וְהָאָ֖רֶץ כָּלְאָ֥ה יְבוּלָֽהּ׃ ‘al- kên ‘ă·lê·ḵem šå̄·ma·yim kā·lə·’ū miṭ·ṭāl wə·hā·’ā·reṣ kā·lə·’āh yə·ḇū·lāhWLC · 10

I have summoned a drought on the fields and on the mountains, on the grain, new wine, and oil,… and on whatever the ground yields, on man… and beast, and on all the labor of [your] hands.”

וָאֶקְרָ֨א חֹ֜רֶב עַל־ הָאָ֣רֶץ וְעַל־ הֶהָרִ֗ים וְעַל־ הַדָּגָן֙ וְעַל־ הַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ וְעַל־ הַיִּצְהָ֔ר וְעַ֛ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָאֲדָמָ֑ה תּוֹצִ֖יא וְעַל־ הָֽאָדָם֙ וְעַל־ הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה וְעַ֖ל כָּל־ יְגִ֥יעַ כַּפָּֽיִם׃ס wā·’eq·rā ḥō·reḇ ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·‘al- he·hā·rîm wə·‘al- had·dā·ḡān wə·‘al- hat·tî·rō·wōš wə·‘al- hay·yiṣ·hār wə·‘al ’ă·šer hā·’ă·ḏā·māh tō·w·ṣî wə·‘al- hā·’ā·ḏām wə·‘al- hab·bə·hê·māh wə·‘al kāl- yə·ḡî·a‘ kap·pā·yimWLC · 11

The People Obey

Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God… and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people… feared the LORD.

𐤆𐤓𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤇𐤂𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

זְרֻבָּבֶ֣ל׀ בֶּֽן־ שַׁלְתִּיאֵ֡ל וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בֶּן־ יְהוֹצָדָק֩ הַגָּד֜וֹל הַכֹּהֵ֨ן וְכֹ֣ל׀ שְׁאֵרִ֣ית הָעָ֗ם וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע בְּקוֹל֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֔ם וְעַל־ דִּבְרֵי֙ הַנָּבִ֔יא חַגַּ֣י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם שְׁלָח֖וֹ הָעָ֖ם מִפְּנֵ֥י וַיִּֽירְא֥וּ יְהוָֽה׃ zə·rub·bā·ḇel ben- šal·tî·’êl wî·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ben- yə·hō·w·ṣā·ḏāq hag·gā·ḏō·wl hak·kō·hên wə·ḵōl šə·’ê·rîṯ hā·‘ām way·yiš·ma‘ bə·qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·hem wə·‘al- diḇ·rê han·nā·ḇî ḥag·gay ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·hem šə·lā·ḥōw hā·‘ām mip·pə·nê way·yî·rə·’ū Yah·wehWLC · 12

Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the message of the LORD to the people -: “I [am] with you,” declares the LORD.

𐤇𐤂𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

חַגַּ֞י מַלְאַ֧ךְ יְהוָ֛ה וַ֠יֹּאמֶר בְּמַלְאֲכ֥וּת יְהוָ֖ה לָעָ֣ם לֵאמֹ֑ר אֲנִ֥י אִתְּכֶ֖ם נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ ḥag·gay mal·’aḵ Yah·weh way·yō·mer bə·mal·’ă·ḵūṯ Yah·weh lā·‘ām lê·mōr ’ă·nî ’it·tə·ḵem nə·’um- Yah·wehWLC · 13

So the LORD stirred the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and began the work on the house of the LORD of Hosts, their God,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤓 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤆𐤓𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤄 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤄𐤌𐤐

יְהוָ֡ה אֶת־ וַיָּ֣עַר רוּחַ֩ זְרֻבָּבֶ֨ל בֶּן־ שַׁלְתִּיאֵ֜ל פַּחַ֣ת יְהוּדָ֗ה וְאֶת־ ר֙וּחַ֙ יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ בֶּן־ יְהוֹצָדָק֙ הַגָּד֔וֹל הַכֹּהֵ֣ן וְֽאֶת־ ר֔וּחַ כֹּ֖ל שְׁאֵרִ֣ית הָעָ֑ם וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ וַיַּעֲשׂ֣וּ מְלָאכָ֔ה בְּבֵית־ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃פ Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·yā·‘ar rū·aḥ zə·rub·bā·ḇel ben- šal·tî·’êl pa·ḥaṯ yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’eṯ- rū·aḥ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ben- yə·hō·w·ṣā·ḏāq hag·gā·ḏō·wl hak·kō·hên wə·’eṯ- rū·aḥ kōl šə·’ê·rîṯ hā·‘ām way·yā·ḇō·’ū way·ya·‘ă·śū mə·lā·ḵāh bə·ḇêṯ- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê·hemWLC · 14

on the twenty-fourth… day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.
