Chapter 2
The Coming Glory of God’s House
1
On the twenty-first day… of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying:
𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤇𐤂𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
בְּעֶשְׂרִ֥ים וְאֶחָ֖ד בַּשְּׁבִיעִ֕י לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה הָיָה֙ בְּיַד־ חַגַּ֥י הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹֽר׃ bə·‘eś·rîm wə·’e·ḥāḏ baš·šə·ḇî·‘î la·ḥō·ḏeš də·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh bə·yaḏ- ḥag·gay han·nā·ḇî lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Speak… to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and also to the remnant of the people. Ask them,

אֱמָר־ נָ֗א אֶל־ זְרֻבָּבֶ֤ל בֶּן־ שַׁלְתִּיאֵל֙ פַּחַ֣ת יְהוּדָ֔ה וְאֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ בֶּן־ יְהוֹצָדָ֖ק הַגָּד֑וֹל הַכֹּהֵ֣ן וְאֶל־ שְׁאֵרִ֥ית הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃ ’ĕ·mār- nā ’el- zə·rub·bā·ḇel ben- šal·tî·’êl pa·ḥaṯ yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ben- yə·hō·w·ṣā·ḏāq hag·gā·ḏō·wl hak·kō·hên wə·’el- šə·’ê·rîṯ hā·‘ām lê·mōr — WLC · 2

‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not appear to you like nothing in comparison?’

מִ֤י הַנִּשְׁאָ֔ר בָכֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר רָאָה֙ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֔ה הַבַּ֣יִת הָרִאשׁ֑וֹן בִּכְבוֹד֖וֹ וּמָ֨ה רֹאִ֤ים אֹתוֹ֙ אַתֶּ֜ם עַ֔תָּה הֲל֥וֹא בְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ כְּאַ֖יִן כָמֹ֛הוּ mî han·niš·’ār ḇā·ḵem ’ă·šer rā·’āh ’eṯ- haz·zeh hab·ba·yiṯ hā·ri·šō·wn biḵ·ḇō·w·ḏōw ū·māh rō·’îm ’ō·ṯōw ’at·tem ‘at·tāh hă·lō·w bə·‘ê·nê·ḵem kə·’a·yin ḵā·mō·hū — WLC · 3

But now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. And be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work! For I am with you, declares the LORD of Hosts.

- This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt. And My Spirit remains among you; do not be afraid.”

אֶֽת־ הַדָּבָ֞ר אֲשֶׁר־ כָּרַ֤תִּי אִתְּכֶם֙ בְּצֵאתְכֶ֣ם מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וְרוּחִ֖י עֹמֶ֣דֶת בְּתוֹכְכֶ֑ם אַל־ תִּירָֽאוּ׃ס ’eṯ- had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer- kā·rat·tî ’it·tə·ḵem bə·ṣê·ṯə·ḵem mim·miṣ·ra·yim wə·rū·ḥî ‘ō·me·ḏeṯ bə·ṯō·wḵ·ḵem ’al- tî·rā·’ū — WLC · 5

For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Once more, in a little while,… I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤄
כִּ֣י כֹ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אָמַר֙ אַחַ֖ת ע֥וֹד מְעַ֣ט הִ֑יא וַאֲנִ֗י מַרְעִישׁ֙ אֶת־ הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־ הָאָ֔רֶץ וְאֶת־ הַיָּ֖ם וְאֶת־ הֶחָרָבָֽה׃ kî ḵōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar ’a·ḥaṯ ‘ō·wḏ mə·‘aṭ hî wa·’ă·nî mar·‘îš ’eṯ- haš·šā·ma·yim wə·’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·’eṯ- hay·yām wə·’eṯ- he·ḥā·rā·ḇāh — WLC · 6

I will shake all the nations, and they will come with all [their] treasures…, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of Hosts.
𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤇𐤌𐤃𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕
וְהִרְעַשְׁתִּי֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם וּבָ֖אוּ חֶמְדַּ֣ת כָּל־ הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וּמִלֵּאתִ֞י אֶת־ הַזֶּה֙ הַבַּ֤יִת כָּב֔וֹד אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ wə·hir·‘aš·tî ’eṯ- kāl- hag·gō·w·yim ū·ḇā·’ū ḥem·daṯ kāl- hag·gō·w·yim ū·mil·lê·ṯî ’eṯ- haz·zeh hab·ba·yiṯ kā·ḇō·wḏ ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 7

The silver [is] Mine, and the gold [is] Mine, declares the LORD of Hosts.
𐤄𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕
הַכֶּ֖סֶף לִ֥י הַזָּהָ֑ב וְלִ֣י נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ hak·ke·sep̄ lî haz·zā·hāḇ wə·lî nə·’um Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 8

The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former, says the LORD of Hosts. And in this place I will provide peace, declares the LORD of Hosts.”

הָאַֽחֲרוֹן֙ כְּבוֹד֩ הַזֶּ֤ה הַבַּ֨יִת יִֽהְיֶ֡ה גָּד֣וֹל מִן־ הָ֣רִאשׁ֔וֹן אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת הַזֶּה֙ וּבַמָּק֤וֹם אֶתֵּ֣ן שָׁל֔וֹם נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃פ hā·’a·ḥă·rō·wn kə·ḇō·wḏ haz·zeh hab·ba·yiṯ yih·yeh gā·ḏō·wl min- hā·ri·šō·wn ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ haz·zeh ū·ḇam·mā·qō·wm ’et·tên šā·lō·wm nə·’um Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 9
Blessings for a Defiled People

On the twenty-fourth day… of the ninth [month], in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet, saying,
𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤔 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤂𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
בְּעֶשְׂרִ֤ים וְאַרְבָּעָה֙ לַתְּשִׁיעִ֔י שְׁתַּ֖יִם בִּשְׁנַ֥ת לְדָרְיָ֑וֶשׁ דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה הָיָה֙ אֶל־ חַגַּ֥י הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹֽר׃ bə·‘eś·rîm wə·’ar·bā·‘āh lat·tə·šî·‘î šə·ta·yim biš·naṯ lə·ḏā·rə·yā·weš də·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’el- ḥag·gay han·nā·ḇî lê·mōr — WLC · 10

“This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Ask… the priests for a ruling…
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
כֹּ֥ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אָמַ֖ר שְׁאַל־ נָ֧א אֶת־ הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים תּוֹרָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar šə·’al- nā ’eṯ- hak·kō·hă·nîm tō·w·rāh lê·mōr — WLC · 11

If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it… touches bread,… stew,… wine,… oil,… or any other food, does [that item] become holy?’” “No,”… replied the priests.

הֵ֣ן׀ אִ֨ישׁ יִשָּׂא־ קֹ֜דֶשׁ בְּשַׂר־ בִּכְנַ֣ף בִּגְד֗וֹ בִּ֠כְנָפוֹ אֶל־ וְנָגַ֣ע הַלֶּ֨חֶם וְאֶל־ הַנָּזִ֜יד וְאֶל־ הַיַּ֧יִן וְאֶל־ שֶׁ֛מֶן וְאֶל־ כָּל־ מַאֲכָ֖ל הֲיִקְדָּ֑שׁ לֹֽא׃ וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ וַיַּעֲנ֧וּ הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים hên ’îš yiś·śā- qō·ḏeš bə·śar- biḵ·nap̄ biḡ·ḏōw biḵ·nā·p̄ōw ’el- wə·nā·ḡa‘ hal·le·ḥem wə·’el- han·nā·zîḏ wə·’el- hay·ya·yin wə·’el- še·men wə·’el- kāl- ma·’ă·ḵāl hă·yiq·dāš lō way·yō·mə·rū way·ya·‘ă·nū hak·kō·hă·nîm — WLC · 12

So Haggai asked, “If [one who is] defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?” “Yes, it becomes defiled,” the priests… answered.

חַגַּ֔י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אִם־ טְמֵא־ נֶ֛פֶשׁ יִגַּ֧ע בְּכָל־ אֵ֖לֶּה הֲיִטְמָ֑א יִטְמָֽא׃ הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ וַיַּעֲנ֧וּ ḥag·gay way·yō·mer ’im- ṭə·mê- ne·p̄eš yig·ga‘ bə·ḵāl ’êl·leh hă·yiṭ·mā yiṭ·mā hak·kō·hă·nîm way·yō·mə·rū way·ya·‘ă·nū — WLC · 13

Then Haggai… replied, “So [it is] with this people [and] this nation before Me, declares the LORD, and so [it is] with every work of their hands; whatever they offer there is defiled…

חַגַּ֜י וַיֹּ֗אמֶר וַיַּ֨עַן כֵּ֣ן הַ֠זֶּה הָֽעָם־ וְכֵן־ הַזֶּ֤ה הַגּ֨וֹי לְפָנַי֙ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה וְכֵ֖ן כָּל־ מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יְדֵיהֶ֑ם וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר יַקְרִ֛יבוּ שָׁ֖ם טָמֵ֥א הֽוּא׃ ḥag·gay way·yō·mer way·ya·‘an kên haz·zeh hā·‘ām- wə·ḵên- haz·zeh hag·gō·w lə·p̄ā·nay nə·’um- Yah·weh wə·ḵên kāl- ma·‘ă·śêh yə·ḏê·hem wa·’ă·šer yaq·rî·ḇū šām ṭā·mê hū — WLC · 14

Now vvv consider carefully from this day forward: Before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD,
𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤍𐤀 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤈𐤓𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤍 𐤁𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
וְעַתָּה֙ שִֽׂימוּ־ לְבַבְכֶ֔ם נָ֣א מִן־ הַזֶּ֖ה הַיּ֥וֹם וָמָ֑עְלָה מִטֶּ֧רֶם אֶ֛בֶן שֽׂוּם־ אֶל־ אֶ֖בֶן בְּהֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃ wə·‘at·tāh śî·mū- lə·ḇaḇ·ḵem nā min- haz·zeh hay·yō·wm wā·mā·‘ə·lāh miṭ·ṭe·rem ’e·ḇen śūm- ’el- ’e·ḇen bə·hê·ḵal Yah·weh — WLC · 15

from that time, [when] one came expecting a heap of twenty [ephahs of grain], there were [but] ten. When one came to the winepress to draw out fifty [baths] -, there were [but] twenty.

מִֽהְיוֹתָ֥ם בָּא֙ אֶל־ עֲרֵמַ֣ת עֶשְׂרִ֔ים וְהָיְתָ֖ה עֲשָׂרָ֑ה בָּ֣א אֶל־ הַיֶּ֗קֶב לַחְשֹׂף֙ חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים פּוּרָ֔ה וְהָיְתָ֖ה עֶשְׂרִֽים׃ mih·yō·w·ṯām bā ’el- ‘ă·rê·maṯ ‘eś·rîm wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ‘ă·śā·rāh bā ’el- hay·ye·qeḇ laḥ·śōp̄ ḥă·miš·šîm pū·rāh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ‘eś·rîm — WLC · 16

I struck you— all the work of your hands— with blight, mildew, and hail, but you did not turn to Me, declares the LORD.

Is there still seed in the barn? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet yielded [fruit]. But from this day on, I will bless you.”

I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overturn chariots and their riders; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.

On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will take you, My servant, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and I will make you like My signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
