Chapter 1

A Call to Repentance

In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, saying:

𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤔 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤏𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

הַשְּׁמִינִ֔י בַּחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ שְׁתַּ֖יִם בִּשְׁנַ֥ת לְדָרְיָ֑וֶשׁ דְבַר־ יְהוָ֗ה הָיָ֣ה אֶל־ הַנָּבִ֖יא זְכַרְיָה֙ בֶּן־ בֶּ֣רֶכְיָ֔ה בֶּן־ עִדּ֥וֹ לֵאמֹֽר׃ haš·šə·mî·nî ba·ḥō·ḏeš šə·ta·yim biš·naṯ lə·ḏā·rə·yā·weš ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’el- han·nā·ḇî zə·ḵar·yāh ben- be·reḵ·yāh ben- ‘id·dōw lê·mōrWLC · 1

“The LORD was very angry with your fathers.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤒𐤑𐤐 𐤒𐤑𐤐 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌

יְהוָ֛ה קָֽצֶף׃ קָצַ֧ף עַל־ אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם Yah·weh qā·ṣep̄ qā·ṣap̄ ‘al- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵemWLC · 2

So tell [the people] that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Return to Me, declares the LORD of Hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of Hosts.’

𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֗ם כֹּ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אָמַר֙ שׁ֣וּבוּ אֵלַ֔י נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת וְאָשׁ֣וּב אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar šū·ḇū ’ê·lay nə·’um Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ wə·’ā·šūḇ ’ă·lê·ḵem ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯWLC · 3

Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed that this is what… the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Turn now from your evil ways [and] deeds.’ But they did not listen… or pay attention to Me, declares the LORD.

𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤍𐤀 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

אַל־ תִּהְי֣וּ כַאֲבֹֽתֵיכֶ֡ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֜ים הַנְּבִיאִ֨ים קָרְאֽוּ־ אֲלֵיהֶם֩ כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת לֵאמֹ֗ר שׁ֤וּבוּ נָא֙ הָרָעִ֔ים מִדַּרְכֵיכֶ֣ם הָֽרָעִ֑ים וּמַעֲלִילֵיכֶם וְלֹ֥א שָׁמְע֛וּ וְלֹֽא־ הִקְשִׁ֥יבוּ אֵלַ֖י נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ ’al- tih·yū ḵa·’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem ’ă·šer hā·ri·šō·nîm han·nə·ḇî·’îm qā·rə·’ū- ’ă·lê·hem kōh ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ lê·mōr šū·ḇū nā hā·rā·‘îm mid·dar·ḵê·ḵem hā·rā·‘îm ū·ma·ʿă·lī·lē·ḵɛm wə·lō šā·mə·‘ū wə·lō- hiq·šî·ḇū ’ê·lay nə·’um- Yah·wehWLC · 4

Where… are your fathers now? And the prophets, do they live forever?

𐤀𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌

אַיֵּה־ הֵ֑ם אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם וְהַ֨נְּבִאִ֔ים יִֽחְיֽוּ׃ הַלְעוֹלָ֖ם ’ay·yêh- hêm ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem wə·han·nə·ḇi·’îm yiḥ·yū hal·‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 5

But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? They repented and said, ‘Just as the LORD of Hosts purposed to do to us according to our ways and deeds, so He has done to us.’”

אַ֣ךְ׀ הֲל֥וֹא דְּבָרַ֣י וְחֻקַּ֗י אֲשֶׁ֤ר צִוִּ֙יתִי֙ אֶת־ עֲבָדַ֣י הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים הִשִּׂ֖יגוּ אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֑ם וַיָּשׁ֣וּבוּ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ זָמַ֜ם לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת לָ֔נוּ כִּדְרָכֵ֙ינוּ֙ וּכְמַ֣עֲלָלֵ֔ינוּ כֵּ֖ן עָשָׂ֥ה אִתָּֽנוּ׃ס ’aḵ hă·lō·w də·ḇā·ray wə·ḥuq·qay ’ă·šer ṣiw·wî·ṯî ’eṯ- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏay han·nə·ḇî·’îm hiś·śî·ḡū ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem way·yā·šū·ḇū way·yō·mə·rū ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ zā·mam la·‘ă·śō·wṯ lā·nū kiḏ·rā·ḵê·nū ū·ḵə·ma·‘ă·lā·lê·nū kên ‘ā·śāh ’it·tā·nūWLC · 6

The Vision of the Horses

On the twenty-fourth… day of the eleventh… month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo

עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֜ה בְּיוֹם֩ לְעַשְׁתֵּֽי־ עָשָׂ֥ר חֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ הוּא־ חֹ֣דֶשׁ שְׁבָ֔ט שְׁתַּ֖יִם בִּשְׁנַ֥ת לְדָרְיָ֑וֶשׁ דְבַר־ יְהוָ֗ה הָיָ֣ה אֶל־ הַנָּבִ֖יא זְכַרְיָה֙ בֶּן־ בֶּ֣רֶכְיָ֔הוּ בֶּן־ עִדּ֥וֹא לֵאמֹֽר׃ ‘eś·rîm wə·’ar·bā·‘āh bə·yō·wm lə·‘aš·tê- ‘ā·śār ḥō·ḏeš hū- ḥō·ḏeš šə·ḇāṭ šə·ta·yim biš·naṯ lə·ḏā·rə·yā·weš ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’el- han·nā·ḇî zə·ḵar·yāh ben- be·reḵ·yā·hū ben- ‘id·dō·w lê·mōrWLC · 7

I looked out into the night and saw a man riding on a red horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in the hollow, and behind him were red, sorrel, and white horses.

𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤎𐤅𐤎 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤄𐤃𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤓𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤌

רָאִ֣יתִי׀ הַלַּ֗יְלָה וְהִנֵּה־ אִישׁ֙ רֹכֵב֙ עַל־ אָדֹ֔ם ס֣וּס וְה֣וּא עֹמֵ֔ד בֵּ֥ין הַהֲדַסִּ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּמְּצֻלָ֑ה וְאַחֲרָיו֙ אֲדֻמִּ֔ים שְׂרֻקִּ֖ים וּלְבָנִֽים׃ סוּסִ֣ים rā·’î·ṯî hal·lay·lāh wə·hin·nêh- ’îš rō·ḵêḇ ‘al- ’ā·ḏōm sūs wə·hū ‘ō·mêḏ bên ha·hă·ḏas·sîm ’ă·šer bam·mə·ṣu·lāh wə·’a·ḥă·rāw ’ă·ḏum·mîm śə·ruq·qîm ū·lə·ḇā·nîm sū·sîmWLC · 8

“What are these, my lord?” I asked. And the angel who was speaking with me replied…, “I will show you what they are…”

𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤊 𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄

מָה־ אֵ֣לֶּה אֲדֹנִ֑י וָאֹמַ֖ר הַמַּלְאָךְ֙ הַדֹּבֵ֣ר בִּ֔י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י אֲנִ֥י אַרְאֶ֖ךָּ מָה־ הֵ֥מָּה אֵֽלֶּה׃ māh- ’êl·leh ’ă·ḏō·nî wā·’ō·mar ham·mal·’āḵ had·dō·ḇêr bî way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ’ă·nî ’ar·’e·kā māh- hêm·māh ’êl·lehWLC · 9

Then the man standing among the myrtle trees… explained, “They are the ones the LORD has sent to patrol the earth.”

𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤄𐤃𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤋𐤄𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑

הָאִ֛ישׁ הָעֹמֵ֥ד בֵּין־ הַהַדַסִּ֖ים וַיֹּאמַ֑ר וַיַּ֗עַן אֵ֚לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שָׁלַ֣ח לְהִתְהַלֵּ֖ךְ בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ hā·’îš hā·‘ō·mêḏ bên- ha·ha·ḏas·sīm way·yō·mar way·ya·‘an ’êl·leh ’ă·šer Yah·weh šā·laḥ lə·hiṯ·hal·lêḵ bā·’ā·reṣWLC · 10

And [the riders] answered the angel of the LORD who was standing among the myrtle trees…, “We have patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth is at rest and tranquil.”

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤄𐤃𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤒𐤈𐤕

וַֽיַּעֲנ֞וּ אֶת־ מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֗ה הָֽעֹמֵד֙ בֵּ֣ין הַהֲדַסִּ֔ים וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ הִתְהַלַּ֣כְנוּ בָאָ֑רֶץ וְהִנֵּ֥ה כָל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ יֹשֶׁ֥בֶת וְשֹׁקָֽטֶת׃ way·ya·‘ă·nū ’eṯ- mal·’aḵ Yah·weh hā·‘ō·mêḏ bên ha·hă·ḏas·sîm way·yō·mə·rū hiṯ·hal·laḵ·nū ḇā·’ā·reṣ wə·hin·nêh ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ yō·še·ḇeṯ wə·šō·qā·ṭeṯWLC · 11

Then the angel of the LORD said…, “How long…, O LORD of Hosts, will You withhold mercy… from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been angry these seventy years?”

𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤓𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤆𐤏𐤌𐤕𐤄 𐤆𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄

מַלְאַךְ־ יְהוָה֮ וַיֹּאמַר֒ וַיַּ֣עַן עַד־ מָתַ֗י יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אַתָּה֙ לֹֽא־ תְרַחֵ֣ם אֶת־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם וְאֵ֖ת עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר זָעַ֔מְתָּה זֶ֖ה שִׁבְעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃ mal·’aḵ- Yah·weh way·yō·mar way·ya·‘an ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’at·tāh lō- ṯə·ra·ḥêm ’eṯ- yə·rū·šā·lim wə·’êṯ ‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh ’ă·šer zā·‘am·tāh zeh šiḇ·‘îm šā·nāhWLC · 12

So the LORD spoke kind and comforting words to the angel who was speaking with me.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤉

יְהוָ֗ה אֶת־ וַיַּ֣עַן טוֹבִ֑ים דְּבָרִ֖ים נִחֻמִֽים׃ דְּבָרִ֣ים הַמַּלְאָ֛ךְ הַדֹּבֵ֥ר בִּ֖י Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·ya·‘an ṭō·w·ḇîm də·ḇā·rîm ni·ḥu·mîm də·ḇā·rîm ham·mal·’āḵ had·dō·ḇêr bîWLC · 13

Then the angel who was speaking with me said…, “Proclaim this word: This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I am very jealous… for Jerusalem and Zion,

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍

הַמַּלְאָךְ֙ הַדֹּבֵ֣ר בִּ֔י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י קְרָ֣א לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּ֥ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אָמַ֖ר גְדוֹלָֽה׃ קִנֵּ֧אתִי קִנְאָ֥ה לִירוּשָׁלִַ֛ם וּלְצִיּ֖וֹן ham·mal·’āḵ had·dō·ḇêr bî way·yō·mer ’ê·lay qə·rā lê·mōr kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh qin·nê·ṯî qin·’āh lî·rū·šā·lim ū·lə·ṣî·yō·wnWLC · 14

but I am fiercely angry… with the nations that are at ease. For I was a little angry, but they have added to the calamity.

𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤒𐤑𐤐 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤒𐤑𐤐 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤀𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤒𐤑𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤓𐤏𐤄

אֲנִ֣י וְקֶ֤צֶף גָּדוֹל֙ קֹצֵ֔ף עַל־ הַגּוֹיִ֖ם הַשַּֽׁאֲנַנִּ֑ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֲנִי֙ מְּעָ֔ט קָצַ֣פְתִּי וְהֵ֖מָּה עָזְר֥וּ לְרָעָֽה׃ ’ă·nî wə·qe·ṣep̄ gā·ḏō·wl qō·ṣêp̄ ‘al- hag·gō·w·yim haš·ša·’ă·nan·nîm ’ă·šer ’ă·nî mə·‘āṭ qā·ṣap̄·tî wə·hêm·māh ‘ā·zə·rū lə·rā·‘āhWLC · 15

Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there My house will be rebuilt, declares the LORD of Hosts, and a measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem.’

Proclaim further [that] this is what… the LORD of Hosts says: ‘My cities will again overflow with prosperity; the LORD will again comfort Zion [and] choose Jerusalem.’”

The Vision of the Horns and the Craftsmen

Then I looked up - and saw… four horns.

𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤒𐤓𐤍𐤅𐤕

וָאֶשָּׂ֥א אֶת־ עֵינַ֖י וָאֵ֑רֶא וְהִנֵּ֖ה אַרְבַּ֥ע קְרָנֽוֹת׃ wā·’eś·śā ’eṯ- ‘ê·nay wā·’ê·re wə·hin·nêh ’ar·ba‘ qə·rā·nō·wṯWLC · 18

So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these?” And he told me, “These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”

Then the LORD showed me four craftsmen.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤌

יְהוָ֔ה וַיַּרְאֵ֣נִי אַרְבָּעָ֖ה חָרָשִֽׁים׃ Yah·weh way·yar·’ê·nî ’ar·bā·‘āh ḥā·rā·šîmWLC · 20

“What are these coming to do?” I asked. And He replied,… “These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise his head; but the [craftsmen] have come to terrify them [and] throw down these horns of the nations that have lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to scatter it.”
