Chapter 10
Judah and Israel Will Be Restored
1
Ask the LORD for rain in springtime…; the LORD makes the storm clouds, and He will give everyone showers of rain and crops in the field.
𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤈𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤇𐤆𐤉𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤂𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤈𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤔𐤃𐤄
שַׁאֲל֨וּ מֵיְהוָ֤ה מָטָר֙ בְּעֵ֣ת מַלְק֔וֹשׁ יְהוָ֖ה עֹשֶׂ֣ה חֲזִיזִ֑ים יִתֵּ֣ן לָהֶ֔ם לְאִ֖ישׁ גֶּ֙שֶׁם֙ וּמְטַר־ עֵ֥שֶׂב בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃ ša·’ă·lū Yah·weh mā·ṭār bə·‘êṯ mal·qō·wōš Yah·weh ‘ō·śeh ḥă·zî·zîm yit·tên lā·hem lə·’îš ge·šem ū·mə·ṭar- ‘ê·śeḇ baś·śā·ḏeh — WLC · 1

For idols speak deceit and diviners see illusions; they tell false dreams and offer empty comfort. Therefore… the people wander like sheep, oppressed for lack of a shepherd.

כִּ֧י הַתְּרָפִ֣ים דִּבְּרוּ־ אָ֗וֶן וְהַקּֽוֹסְמִים֙ חָ֣זוּ שֶׁ֔קֶר יְדַבֵּ֔רוּ הַשָּׁ֣וא וַֽחֲלֹמוֹת֙ הֶ֖בֶל יְנַֽחֵמ֑וּן עַל־ כֵּן֙ נָסְע֣וּ כְמוֹ־ צֹ֔אן יַעֲנ֖וּ כִּֽי־ אֵ֥ין רֹעֶֽה׃פ kî hat·tə·rā·p̄îm dib·bə·rū- ’ā·wen wə·haq·qō·ws·mîm ḥā·zū še·qer yə·ḏab·bê·rū haš·šå̄·w wa·ḥă·lō·mō·wṯ he·ḇel yə·na·ḥê·mūn ‘al- kên nā·sə·‘ū ḵə·mōw- ṣōn ya·‘ă·nū kî- ’ên rō·‘eh — WLC · 2

“My anger… burns against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders. For the LORD of Hosts attends to His flock, the house of Judah; He will make them like His royal steed in battle.

אַפִּ֔י וְעַל־ חָרָ֣ה עַל־ הָֽרֹעִים֙ אֶפְק֑וֹד הָעַתּוּדִ֖ים כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֤וֹת אֶת־ פָקַד֩ עֶדְרוֹ֙ אֶת־ בֵּ֣ית יְהוּדָ֔ה וְשָׂ֣ם אוֹתָ֔ם הוֹד֖וֹ כְּס֥וּס בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ ’ap·pî wə·‘al- ḥā·rāh ‘al- hā·rō·‘îm ’ep̄·qō·wḏ hā·‘at·tū·ḏîm kî- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’eṯ- p̄ā·qaḏ ‘eḏ·rōw ’eṯ- bêṯ yə·hū·ḏāh wə·śām ’ō·w·ṯām hō·w·ḏōw kə·sūs bam·mil·ḥā·māh — WLC · 3

The cornerstone will come from Judah, the tent peg… from him, as well as the battle… bow and every ruler together.

פִנָּה֙ מִמֶּ֤נּוּ יָתֵ֔ד מִמֶּ֖נּוּ מִמֶּ֣נּוּ מִלְחָמָ֑ה מִמֶּ֛נּוּ יֵצֵ֥א קֶ֣שֶׁת כָל־ נוֹגֵ֖שׂ יַחְדָּֽו׃ p̄in·nāh mim·men·nū yā·ṯêḏ mim·men·nū mim·men·nū mil·ḥā·māh mim·men·nū yê·ṣê qe·šeṯ ḵāl nō·w·ḡêś yaḥ·dāw — WLC · 4

They will be like mighty men in battle, trampling [the enemy] in the mire of the streets. They will fight because the LORD is with them, and they will put the horsemen… to shame.

וְהָי֨וּ כְגִבֹּרִ֜ים בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה בּוֹסִ֨ים בְּטִ֤יט חוּצוֹת֙ וְנִ֨לְחֲמ֔וּ כִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה עִמָּ֑ם רֹכְבֵ֥י סוּסִֽים׃ וְהֹבִ֖ישׁוּ wə·hā·yū ḵə·ḡib·bō·rîm bam·mil·ḥā·māh bō·w·sîm bə·ṭîṭ ḥū·ṣō·wṯ wə·nil·ḥă·mū kî Yah·weh ‘im·mām rō·ḵə·ḇê sū·sîm wə·hō·ḇî·šū — WLC · 5

I will strengthen the house of Judah and save the house of Joseph. I will restore them because I have compassion on them, and they will be as though I had not rejected them. For I am the LORD their God, and I will answer them.

וְגִבַּרְתִּ֣י׀ אֶת־ בֵּ֣ית יְהוּדָ֗ה וְאֶת־ אוֹשִׁ֔יעַ בֵּ֤ית יוֹסֵף֙ וְהֽוֹשְׁבוֹתִים֙ כִּ֣י רִֽחַמְתִּ֔ים וְהָי֖וּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־ זְנַחְתִּ֑ים כִּ֗י אֲנִ֛י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם וְאֶעֱנֵֽם׃ wə·ḡib·bar·tî ’eṯ- bêṯ yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’eṯ- ’ō·wō·šî·a‘ bêṯ yō·w·sêp̄ wə·hō·wō·šə·ḇō·w·ṯîm kî ri·ḥam·tîm wə·hā·yū ka·’ă·šer lō- zə·naḥ·tîm kî ’ă·nî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·hem wə·’e·‘ĕ·nêm — WLC · 6

Ephraim will be like a mighty man, and their hearts will be glad as with wine. Their children will see it and be joyful; their hearts will rejoice in the LORD.

אֶפְרַ֔יִם וְהָי֤וּ כְגִבּוֹר֙ לִבָּ֖ם וְשָׂמַ֥ח כְּמוֹ־ יָ֑יִן וּבְנֵיהֶם֙ יִרְא֣וּ וְשָׂמֵ֔חוּ לִבָּ֖ם יָגֵ֥ל בַּיהוָֽה׃ ’ep̄·ra·yim wə·hā·yū ḵə·ḡib·bō·wr lib·bām wə·śā·maḥ kə·mōw- yā·yin ū·ḇə·nê·hem yir·’ū wə·śā·mê·ḥū lib·bām yā·ḡêl Yah·weh — WLC · 7

I will whistle for them to gather, for I have redeemed them; and they will be as numerous as they once were.

אֶשְׁרְקָ֥ה לָהֶ֛ם וַאֲקַבְּצֵ֖ם כִּ֣י פְדִיתִ֑ים וְרָב֖וּ כְּמ֥וֹ רָבֽוּ׃ ’eš·rə·qāh lā·hem wa·’ă·qab·bə·ṣêm kî p̄ə·ḏî·ṯîm wə·rā·ḇū kə·mōw rā·ḇū — WLC · 8

Though I sow them among the nations, they will remember Me in distant lands; they and their children will live… and return.

וְאֶזְרָעֵם֙ בָּֽעַמִּ֔ים יִזְכְּר֑וּנִי וּבַמֶּרְחַקִּ֖ים בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם וְחָי֥וּ אֶת־ וָשָֽׁבוּ׃ wə·’ez·rā·‘êm bā·‘am·mîm yiz·kə·rū·nî ū·ḇam·mer·ḥaq·qîm bə·nê·hem wə·ḥā·yū ’eṯ- wā·šā·ḇū — WLC · 9

I will bring them back from Egypt and gather them from Assyria. I will bring them vvv to Gilead and Lebanon until no [more room] is found for them.

וַהֲשִֽׁיבוֹתִים֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם אֲקַבְּצֵ֑ם וּמֵֽאַשּׁ֖וּר אֲבִיאֵ֔ם וְאֶל־ אֶ֨רֶץ גִּלְעָ֤ד וּלְבָנוֹן֙ וְלֹ֥א יִמָּצֵ֖א לָהֶֽם׃ wa·hă·šî·ḇō·w·ṯîm mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim ’ă·qab·bə·ṣêm ū·mê·’aš·šūr ’ă·ḇî·’êm wə·’el- ’e·reṣ gil·‘āḏ ū·lə·ḇā·nō·wn wə·lō yim·mā·ṣê lā·hem — WLC · 10

They will pass through the sea of distress and strike the waves of the sea; all the depths of the Nile will dry up. The pride of Assyria will be brought down, and the scepter of Egypt will depart.

וְעָבַ֨ר בַּיָּ֜ם צָרָ֗ה וְהִכָּ֤ה גַּלִּ֔ים בַיָּם֙ כֹּ֖ל מְצוּל֣וֹת יְאֹ֑ר וְהֹבִ֕ישׁוּ גְּא֣וֹן אַשּׁ֔וּר וְהוּרַד֙ וְשֵׁ֥בֶט מִצְרַ֖יִם יָסֽוּר׃ wə·‘ā·ḇar bay·yām ṣā·rāh wə·hik·kāh gal·lîm ḇay·yām kōl mə·ṣū·lō·wṯ yə·’ōr wə·hō·ḇî·šū gə·’ō·wn ’aš·šūr wə·hū·raḏ wə·šê·ḇeṭ miṣ·ra·yim yā·sūr — WLC · 11

I will strengthen them in the LORD, and in His name they will walk,” declares the LORD.
