Chapter 2
The Vision of the Measuring Line

Then I lifted up my eyes and saw… a man with a measuring line in his hand.

וָאֶשָּׂ֥א עֵינַ֛י וָאֵ֖רֶא וְהִנֵּה־ אִ֑ישׁ מִדָּֽה׃ חֶ֥בֶל וּבְיָד֖וֹ wā·’eś·śā ‘ê·nay wā·’ê·re wə·hin·nêh- ’îš mid·dāh ḥe·ḇel ū·ḇə·yā·ḏōw — WLC · 1

“Where are you going?” I asked. “To measure Jerusalem,” he replied…, “and to determine… its width… and length.”

אָ֖נָה אַתָּ֣ה הֹלֵ֑ךְ וָאֹמַ֕ר לָמֹד֙ אֶת־ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י לִרְא֥וֹת כַּמָּֽה־ רָחְבָּ֖הּ וְכַמָּ֥ה אָרְכָּֽהּ׃ ’ā·nāh ’at·tāh hō·lêḵ wā·’ō·mar lā·mōḏ ’eṯ- yə·rū·šā·lim way·yō·mer ’ê·lay lir·’ō·wṯ kam·māh- rā·ḥə·bāh wə·ḵam·māh ’ā·rə·kāh — WLC · 2

Then the angel who was speaking with me went forth, and another angel came forward to meet him

וְהִנֵּ֗ה הַמַּלְאָ֛ךְ הַדֹּבֵ֥ר בִּ֖י יֹצֵ֑א אַחֵ֔ר וּמַלְאָ֣ךְ יֹצֵ֖א לִקְרָאתֽוֹ׃ wə·hin·nêh ham·mal·’āḵ had·dō·ḇêr bî yō·ṣê ’a·ḥêr ū·mal·’āḵ yō·ṣê liq·rā·ṯōw — WLC · 3

and said to him, “Run and tell… that… young man: ‘Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the multitude of men and livestock within it.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔ו רֻ֗ץ דַּבֵּ֛ר אֶל־ הַלָּ֖ז לֵאמֹ֑ר הַנַּ֥עַר יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם תֵּשֵׁ֣ב פְּרָזוֹת֙ מֵרֹ֥ב אָדָ֛ם וּבְהֵמָ֖ה בְּתוֹכָֽהּ׃ way·yō·mer ʾē·lå̄w ruṣ dab·bêr ’el- hal·lāz lê·mōr han·na·‘ar yə·rū·šā·lim tê·šêḇ pə·rā·zō·wṯ mê·rōḇ ’ā·ḏām ū·ḇə·hê·māh bə·ṯō·w·ḵāh — WLC · 4

For I will be a wall of fire around it, declares the LORD, and I will be the glory within it.’”

וַאֲנִ֤י אֶֽהְיֶה־ לָּהּ֙ ח֥וֹמַת אֵ֖שׁ סָבִ֑יב נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה אֶֽהְיֶ֥ה וּלְכָב֖וֹד בְתוֹכָֽהּ׃פ wa·’ă·nî ’eh·yeh- lāh ḥō·w·maṯ ’êš sā·ḇîḇ nə·’um- Yah·weh ’eh·yeh ū·lə·ḵā·ḇō·wḏ ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵāh — WLC · 5
The Redemption of Zion

“Get up! Get up! Flee from the land of the north,” declares the LORD, “for I have scattered you like the four winds of heaven,” declares the LORD.

ה֣וֹי ה֗וֹי וְנֻ֛סוּ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ צָפ֖וֹן נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֠י פֵּרַ֥שְׂתִּי אֶתְכֶ֖ם כְּאַרְבַּ֞ע רוּח֧וֹת הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ hō·w hō·w wə·nu·sū mê·’e·reṣ ṣā·p̄ō·wn nə·’um- Yah·weh kî pê·raś·tî ’eṯ·ḵem kə·’ar·ba‘ rū·ḥō·wṯ haš·šā·ma·yim nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 6

“Get up, O Zion! Escape, you who dwell with the Daughter of Babylon!”

ה֥וֹי צִיּ֖וֹן הִמָּלְטִ֑י יוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת בַּת־ בָּבֶֽל׃ס hō·w ṣî·yō·wn him·mā·lə·ṭî yō·wō·še·ḇeṯ baṯ- bā·ḇel — WLC · 7

For this is what the LORD of Hosts… says: “After His Glory has sent Me against the nations that have plundered you— for whoever touches you touches the apple of His eye—
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤂𐤏 𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤍𐤂𐤏 𐤁𐤁𐤁𐤕 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤅
כִּ֣י כֹ֣ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָאוֹת֒ אַחַ֣ר אָמַר֮ כָּב֔וֹד שְׁלָחַ֕נִי אֶל־ הַגּוֹיִ֖ם הַשֹּׁלְלִ֣ים אֶתְכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י הַנֹּגֵ֣עַ בָּכֶ֔ם נֹגֵ֖עַ בְּבָבַ֥ת עֵינֽוֹ׃ kî ḵōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’a·ḥar ’ā·mar kā·ḇō·wḏ šə·lā·ḥa·nî ’el- hag·gō·w·yim haš·šō·lə·lîm ’eṯ·ḵem kî han·nō·ḡê·a‘ bā·ḵem nō·ḡê·a‘ bə·ḇā·ḇaṯ ‘ê·nōw — WLC · 8

- I will surely wave My hand over them, so that they will become plunder for their own servants. Then you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me.”

כִּ֠י הִנְנִ֨י מֵנִ֤יף אֶת־ יָדִי֙ עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וְהָי֥וּ שָׁלָ֖ל לְעַבְדֵיהֶ֑ם וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁלָחָֽנִי׃ס kî hin·nî mê·nîp̄ ’eṯ- yā·ḏî ‘ă·lê·hem wə·hā·yū šā·lāl lə·‘aḇ·ḏê·hem wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ šə·lā·ḥā·nî — WLC · 9

“Shout for joy and be glad, O Daughter of Zion, for… I am coming to dwell among you,” declares the LORD.

רָנִּ֥י וְשִׂמְחִ֖י בַּת־ צִיּ֑וֹן כִּ֧י הִנְנִי־ בָ֛א וְשָׁכַנְתִּ֥י בְתוֹכֵ֖ךְ נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ rān·nî wə·śim·ḥî baṯ- ṣî·yō·wn kî hin·nî- ḇā wə·šā·ḵan·tî ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 10

“On that day many nations will join themselves to the LORD, and they will become My people. I will dwell among you, and you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me to you.
𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤋𐤅𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊
הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם רַבִּ֤ים גוֹיִ֨ם וְנִלְווּ֩ אֶל־ יְהוָה֙ וְהָ֥יוּ לִ֖י לְעָ֑ם וְשָׁכַנְתִּ֣י בְתוֹכֵ֔ךְ וְיָדַ֕עַתְּ כִּי־ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁלָחַ֥נִי אֵלָֽיִךְ׃ ha·hū bay·yō·wm rab·bîm ḡō·w·yim wə·nil·wū ’el- Yah·weh wə·hā·yū lî lə·‘ām wə·šā·ḵan·tî ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ wə·yā·ḏa·‘at kî- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ šə·lā·ḥa·nî ’ê·lā·yiḵ — WLC · 11

And the LORD will take possession of Judah as His portion in the Holy Land, and He will once again choose Jerusalem.

יְהוָ֤ה אֶת־ וְנָחַ֨ל יְהוּדָה֙ חֶלְק֔וֹ עַ֖ל הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ אַדְמַ֣ת ע֖וֹד וּבָחַ֥ר בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ Yah·weh ’eṯ- wə·nā·ḥal yə·hū·ḏāh ḥel·qōw ‘al haq·qō·ḏeš ’aḏ·maṯ ‘ō·wḏ ū·ḇā·ḥar bî·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 12

Be silent before the LORD, all people, for He has roused Himself from His holy dwelling.”
