Chapter 5

The Vision of the Flying Scroll

1

Again I lifted up my eyes and saw before me a flying scroll.

𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤐𐤄 𐤌𐤂𐤋𐤄

וָאָשׁ֕וּב וָאֶשָּׂ֥א עֵינַ֖י וָֽאֶרְאֶ֑ה וְהִנֵּ֖ה עָפָֽה׃ מְגִלָּ֥ה wā·’ā·šūḇ wā·’eś·śā ‘ê·nay wā·’er·’eh wə·hin·nêh ‘ā·p̄āh mə·ḡil·lāhWLC · 1

“What do you see?” asked [the angel]… “I see a flying scroll,” I replied, “twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide.

𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤐𐤄 𐤌𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤊𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤄

מָ֥ה אַתָּ֖ה רֹאֶ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י אֲנִ֤י רֹאֶה֙ עָפָ֔ה מְגִלָּ֣ה וָאֹמַ֗ר עֶשְׂרִ֣ים בָּֽאַמָּ֔ה אָרְכָּהּ֙ עֶ֥שֶׂר בָּאַמָּֽה׃ וְרָחְבָּ֖הּ māh ’at·tāh rō·’eh way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ’ă·nî rō·’eh ‘ā·p̄āh mə·ḡil·lāh wā·’ō·mar ‘eś·rîm bā·’am·māh ’ā·rə·kāh ‘e·śer bā·’am·māh wə·rā·ḥə·bāhWLC · 2

Then he told me, “This is the curse that is going out over the face of all the land, for according [to] one [side] of [the scroll], every thief will be removed; and according to the other side, every perjurer will be removed.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤆𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤍𐤁 𐤍𐤒𐤄 𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤍𐤒𐤄

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י זֹ֚את הָֽאָלָ֔ה הַיּוֹצֵ֖את עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י כָל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּ֣י כָּמ֣וֹהָ מִזֶּה֙ כָל־ הַגֹּנֵ֗ב נִקָּ֔ה כָּמ֥וֹהָ מִזֶּ֖ה וְכָל־ הַנִּ֨שְׁבָּ֔ע נִקָּֽה׃ way·yō·mer ’ê·lay zōṯ hā·’ā·lāh hay·yō·w·ṣêṯ ‘al- pə·nê ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ kî kā·mō·w·hā miz·zeh ḵāl hag·gō·nêḇ niq·qāh kā·mō·w·hā miz·zeh wə·ḵāl han·niš·bā‘ niq·qāhWLC · 3

I will send it out, declares the LORD of Hosts, and it will enter… the house of the thief… and the house of him who swears falsely by My name. It will remain inside his house and destroy it, [down to] its timbers and stones.”

הוֹצֵאתִ֗יהָ נְאֻם֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וּבָ֙אָה֙ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית הַגַּנָּ֔ב וְאֶל־ בֵּ֛ית הַנִּשְׁבָּ֥ע לַשָּׁ֑קֶר בִּשְׁמִ֖י וְלָ֙נֶה֙ בְּת֣וֹךְ בֵּית֔וֹ וְכִלַּ֖תּוּ וְאֶת־ עֵצָ֥יו וְאֶת־ אֲבָנָֽיו׃ hō·w·ṣê·ṯî·hā nə·’um Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ū·ḇā·’āh ’el- bêṯ hag·gan·nāḇ wə·’el- bêṯ han·niš·bā‘ laš·šā·qer biš·mî wə·lā·neh bə·ṯō·wḵ bê·ṯōw wə·ḵil·lat·tū wə·’eṯ- ‘ê·ṣāw wə·’eṯ- ’ă·ḇā·nāwWLC · 4

The Vision of the Woman in a Basket

Then the angel who was speaking with me came forward and told me, “Now lift up your eyes and see what is approaching.”

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤀 𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕

הַמַּלְאָ֖ךְ הַדֹּבֵ֣ר בִּ֑י וַיֵּצֵ֕א וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י נָ֤א שָׂ֣א עֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ וּרְאֵ֔ה מָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת׃ הַיּוֹצֵ֥את ham·mal·’āḵ had·dō·ḇêr bî way·yê·ṣê way·yō·mer ’ê·lay nā śā ‘ê·ne·ḵā ū·rə·’êh māh haz·zōṯ hay·yō·w·ṣêṯWLC · 5

“What is it?” I asked. And he replied, “- A measuring basket is going forth.” Then he continued, “This is their iniquity in all the land.”

𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤐𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

מַה־ הִ֑יא וָאֹמַ֖ר וַיֹּ֗אמֶר זֹ֤את הָֽאֵיפָה֙ הַיּוֹצֵ֔את וַיֹּ֕אמֶר זֹ֥את עֵינָ֖ם בְּכָל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ mah- hî wā·’ō·mar way·yō·mer zōṯ hā·’ê·p̄āh hay·yō·w·ṣêṯ way·yō·mer zōṯ ‘ê·nām bə·ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 6

And behold, the cover of lead was raised,… and there was a woman sitting inside the basket.

𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤊𐤓 𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤕 𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤐𐤄

וְהִנֵּ֛ה כִּכַּ֥ר עֹפֶ֖רֶת נִשֵּׂ֑את וְזֹאת֙ אַחַ֔ת אִשָּׁ֣ה יוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת בְּת֥וֹךְ הָאֵיפָֽה׃ wə·hin·nêh kik·kar ‘ō·p̄e·reṯ niś·śêṯ wə·zōṯ ’a·ḥaṯ ’iš·šāh yō·wō·še·ḇeṯ bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·’ê·p̄āhWLC · 7

“This is Wickedness,” he said. And he shoved her down into… the basket, pushing down the lead cover over its opening.

𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤎

זֹ֣את הָרִשְׁעָ֔ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ וַיַּשְׁלֵ֥ךְ אֹתָ֖הּ אֶל־ תּ֣וֹךְ הָֽאֵיפָ֑ה וַיַּשְׁלֵ֛ךְ אֶת־ הָעֹפֶ֖רֶת אֶ֥בֶן אֶל־ פִּֽיהָ׃ס zōṯ hā·riš·‘āh way·yō·mer way·yaš·lêḵ ’ō·ṯāh ’el- tō·wḵ hā·’ê·p̄āh way·yaš·lêḵ ’eṯ- hā·‘ō·p̄e·reṯ ’e·ḇen ’el- pî·hāWLC · 8

Then I lifted up my eyes and saw… two women approaching, with the wind in their wings. Their wings were like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between heaven and earth.

𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤁𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤎𐤉𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤐𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

וָאֶשָּׂ֨א עֵינַ֜י וָאֵ֗רֶא וְהִנֵּה֩ שְׁתַּ֨יִם נָשִׁ֤ים יֽוֹצְאוֹת֙ וְר֣וּחַ בְּכַנְפֵיהֶ֔ם וְלָהֵ֥נָּה כְנָפַ֖יִם כְּכַנְפֵ֣י הַחֲסִידָ֑ה וַתִּשֶּׂ֙אנָה֙ אֶת־ הָ֣אֵיפָ֔ה בֵּ֥ין הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ וּבֵ֥ין הָאָ֖רֶץ wā·’eś·śā ‘ê·nay wā·’ê·re wə·hin·nêh šə·ta·yim nā·šîm yō·wṣ·’ō·wṯ wə·rū·aḥ bə·ḵan·p̄ê·hem wə·lā·hên·nāh ḵə·nā·p̄a·yim kə·ḵan·p̄ê ha·ḥă·sî·ḏāh wat·tiś·śe·nāh ’eṯ- hā·’ê·p̄āh bên haš·šā·mā·yim ū·ḇên hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 9

“Where are they taking the basket?” I asked… the angel who was speaking with me.

𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤉

אָ֛נָה הֵ֥מָּה מֽוֹלִכ֖וֹת אֶת־ הָאֵיפָֽה׃ וָאֹמַ֕ר אֶל־ הַמַּלְאָ֖ךְ הַדֹּבֵ֣ר בִּ֑י ’ā·nāh hêm·māh mō·w·li·ḵō·wṯ ’eṯ- hā·’ê·p̄āh wā·’ō·mar ’el- ham·mal·’āḵ had·dō·ḇêr bîWLC · 10

“To build a house for it in the land of Shinar, he told me. “And when it is ready, the basket will be set there on its pedestal.”

𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤔𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤇𐤄 𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤊𐤍𐤕𐤄𐤎

לִבְנֽוֹת־ בַ֖יִת לָ֥הֿ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ שִׁנְעָ֑ר וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י וְהוּכַ֛ן וְהֻנִּ֥יחָה שָּׁ֖ם עַל־ מְכֻנָתָֽהּ׃ס liḇ·nō·wṯ- ḇa·yiṯ lāh bə·’e·reṣ šin·‘ār way·yō·mer ’ê·lay wə·hū·ḵan wə·hun·nî·ḥāh šām ‘al- mə·ḵu·nā·ṯāhWLC · 11
