Chapter 8
The Restoration of Jerusalem
1
Again the word of the LORD of Hosts came [to me], saying:
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת וַיְהִ֛י לֵאמֹֽר׃ də·ḇar- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ way·hî lê·mōr — WLC · 1

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “I am jealous for Zion with great zeal; I am jealous for her with great fervor.”
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤄 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤄
כֹּ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אָמַר֙ קִנֵּ֥אתִי לְצִיּ֖וֹן גְדוֹלָ֑ה קִנְאָ֣ה קִנֵּ֥אתִי לָֽהּ׃ גְדוֹלָ֖ה וְחֵמָ֥ה kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar qin·nê·ṯî lə·ṣî·yō·wn ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh qin·’āh qin·nê·ṯî lāh ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh wə·ḥê·māh — WLC · 2

This is what the LORD says: “I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the City of Truth, and the mountain of the LORD of Hosts [will be called] the Holy Mountain.”

כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר שַׁ֚בְתִּי אֶל־ צִיּ֔וֹן וְשָׁכַנְתִּ֖י בְּת֣וֹךְ יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ וְנִקְרְאָ֤ה עִ֣יר־ הָֽאֱמֶ֔ת וְהַר־ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ׃ס הַ֥ר kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar šab̲·tî ’el- ṣî·yō·wn wə·šā·ḵan·tî bə·ṯō·wḵ yə·rū·šā·lim yə·rū·šā·lim wə·niq·rə·’āh ‘îr- hā·’ĕ·meṯ wə·har- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ haq·qō·ḏeš har — WLC · 3

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Old men and old women will again sit along the streets of Jerusalem, each with a staff in hand because of great age.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤃 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤔𐤏𐤍𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤓𐤁 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌
כֹּ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אָמַר֙ זְקֵנִ֣ים וּזְקֵנ֔וֹת עֹ֤ד יֵֽשְׁבוּ֙ בִּרְחֹב֖וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְאִ֧ישׁ מִשְׁעַנְתּ֛וֹ בְּיָד֖וֹ מֵרֹ֥ב יָמִֽים׃ kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar zə·qê·nîm ū·zə·qê·nō·wṯ ‘ōḏ yê·šə·ḇū bir·ḥō·ḇō·wṯ yə·rū·šā·lim wə·’îš miš·‘an·tōw bə·yā·ḏōw mê·rōḇ yā·mîm — WLC · 4

And the streets of the city will be filled with boys and girls playing there.”

וּרְחֹב֤וֹת הָעִיר֙ יִמָּ֣לְא֔וּ יְלָדִ֖ים וִֽילָד֑וֹת מְשַׂחֲקִ֖ים בִּרְחֹֽבֹתֶֽיהָ׃ס ū·rə·ḥō·ḇō·wṯ hā·‘îr yim·mā·lə·’ū yə·lā·ḏîm wî·lā·ḏō·wṯ mə·śa·ḥă·qîm bir·ḥō·ḇō·ṯe·hā — WLC · 5

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “If [this] is impossible in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be impossible in My eyes?” declares the LORD of Hosts.

כֹּ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אָמַר֙ כִּ֣י יִפָּלֵ֗א בְּעֵינֵי֙ שְׁאֵרִית֙ הַזֶּ֔ה הָעָ֣ם הָהֵ֑ם בַּיָּמִ֖ים גַּם־ יִפָּלֵ֔א בְּעֵינַי֙ נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃פ kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar kî yip·pā·lê bə·‘ê·nê šə·’ê·rîṯ haz·zeh hā·‘ām hā·hêm bay·yā·mîm gam- yip·pā·lê bə·‘ê·nay nə·’um Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 6

This is what the LORD of Hosts… says: “I will save My people from the land of the east and from the land of the west.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤇 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤔
כֹּ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת הִנְנִ֥י אָמַר֙ מוֹשִׁ֛יעַ אֶת־ עַמִּ֖י מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִזְרָ֑ח וּמֵאֶ֖רֶץ מְב֥וֹא הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ hin·nî ’ā·mar mō·wō·šî·a‘ ’eṯ- ‘am·mî mê·’e·reṣ miz·rāḥ ū·mê·’e·reṣ mə·ḇō·w haš·šā·meš — WLC · 7

I will bring them {back} to dwell in Jerusalem, where they will be My people, and I will be their faithful and righteous God.”

וְהֵבֵאתִ֣י אֹתָ֔ם וְשָׁכְנ֖וּ בְּת֣וֹךְ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְהָיוּ־ לִ֣י לְעָ֗ם וַֽאֲנִי֙ אֶהְיֶ֤ה לָהֶם֙ בֶּאֱמֶ֖ת וּבִצְדָקָֽה׃ס לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים wə·hê·ḇê·ṯî ’ō·ṯām wə·šā·ḵə·nū bə·ṯō·wḵ yə·rū·šā·lim wə·hā·yū- lî lə·‘ām wa·’ă·nî ’eh·yeh lā·hem be·’ĕ·meṯ ū·ḇiṣ·ḏā·qāh lê·lō·hîm — WLC · 8

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Let your hands be strong, you who now… hear these words spoken… by the prophets [who were present] when the foundations were laid to rebuild the temple, the house of the LORD of Hosts.

כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָאוֹת֒ אָמַר֮ יְדֵיכֶ֔ם תֶּחֱזַ֣קְנָה בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֵ֖ת הַשֹּֽׁמְעִים֙ הָאֵ֑לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֣ים אֲ֠שֶׁר מִפִּי֙ הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים בְּי֞וֹם יֻסַּ֨ד לְהִבָּנֽוֹת׃ הַהֵיכָ֖ל בֵּית־ יְהוָ֧ה צְבָא֛וֹת kōh- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar yə·ḏê·ḵem te·ḥĕ·zaq·nāh bay·yā·mîm hā·’êl·leh ’êṯ haš·šō·mə·‘îm hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer mip·pî han·nə·ḇî·’îm bə·yō·wm yus·saḏ lə·hib·bā·nō·wṯ ha·hê·ḵāl bêṯ- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 9

For before those days neither man nor beast received… wages, nor was there safety from the enemy for anyone who came or went, for I had turned every man… against his neighbor.
𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤊𐤓 𐤔𐤊𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤑𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅
כִּ֗י לִפְנֵי֙ הָהֵ֔ם הַיָּמִ֣ים לֹ֣א הָֽאָדָם֙ אֵינֶ֑נָּה הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה נִֽהְיָ֔ה וּשְׂכַ֥ר שְׂכַ֤ר אֵין־ שָׁלוֹם֙ מִן־ הַצָּ֔ר וְלַיּוֹצֵ֨א וְלַבָּ֤א וַאֲשַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־ כָּל־ הָאָדָ֖ם אִ֥ישׁ בְּרֵעֵֽהוּ׃ kî lip̄·nê hā·hêm hay·yā·mîm lō hā·’ā·ḏām ’ê·nen·nāh hab·bə·hê·māh nih·yāh ū·śə·ḵar śə·ḵar ’ên- šā·lō·wm min- haṣ·ṣār wə·lay·yō·w·ṣê wə·lab·bā wa·’ă·šal·laḥ ’eṯ- kāl- hā·’ā·ḏām ’îš bə·rê·‘ê·hū — WLC · 10

But now I will not treat the remnant of this people as I did in the past…,” declares the LORD of Hosts.

וְעַתָּ֗ה אֲנִ֔י לֹ֣א לִשְׁאֵרִ֖ית הַזֶּ֑ה הָעָ֣ם הָרִֽאשֹׁנִים֙ כַיָּמִ֤ים נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ wə·‘at·tāh ’ă·nî lō liš·’ê·rîṯ haz·zeh hā·‘ām hā·ri·šō·nîm ḵay·yā·mîm nə·’um Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 11

“For the seed [will be] prosperous, the vine will yield its fruit, the ground will yield its produce, and the skies will give their dew. To the remnant of this people {I will give} all these things as an inheritance. -

כִּֽי־ זֶ֣רַע הַשָּׁל֗וֹם הַגֶּ֜פֶן תִּתֵּ֤ן פִּרְיָהּ֙ וְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ תִּתֵּ֣ן אֶת־ יְבוּלָ֔הּ וְהַשָּׁמַ֖יִם יִתְּנ֣וּ טַלָּ֑ם שְׁאֵרִ֛ית הַזֶּ֖ה אֶת־ הָעָ֥ם כָּל־ אֵֽלֶּה׃ וְהִנְחַלְתִּ֗י אֶת־ kî- ze·ra‘ haš·šā·lō·wm hag·ge·p̄en tit·tên pir·yāh wə·hā·’ā·reṣ tit·tên ’eṯ- yə·ḇū·lāh wə·haš·šā·ma·yim yit·tə·nū ṭal·lām šə·’ê·rîṯ haz·zeh ’eṯ- hā·‘ām kāl- ’êl·leh wə·hin·ḥal·tî ’eṯ- — WLC · 12

As vvv you have been a curse among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so I will save you, and you will be a blessing. Do not be afraid; let your hands be strong.”
𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤒𐤋𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤊𐤌𐤎 𐤕𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤄
כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ וְהָיָ֡ה הֱיִיתֶ֨ם קְלָלָ֜ה בַּגּוֹיִ֗ם בֵּ֤ית יְהוּדָה֙ וּבֵ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כֵּ֚ן אוֹשִׁ֣יעַ אֶתְכֶ֔ם וִהְיִיתֶ֖ם בְּרָכָ֑ה אַל־ תִּירָ֖אוּ יְדֵיכֶֽם׃ס תֶּחֱזַ֥קְנָה ka·’ă·šer wə·hā·yāh hĕ·yî·ṯem qə·lā·lāh bag·gō·w·yim bêṯ yə·hū·ḏāh ū·ḇêṯ yiś·rā·’êl kên ’ō·wō·šî·a‘ ’eṯ·ḵem wih·yî·ṯem bə·rā·ḵāh ’al- tî·rā·’ū yə·ḏê·ḵem te·ḥĕ·zaq·nāh — WLC · 13

For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Just as I resolved to bring disaster upon you when your fathers provoked Me to anger -, and I did not relent,” says the LORD of Hosts,
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤆𐤌𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤄𐤒𐤑𐤉𐤐 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤇𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕
כִּ֣י כֹ֣ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָאוֹת֒ אָמַר֮ כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר זָמַמְ֜תִּי לְהָרַ֣ע לָכֶ֗ם אֲבֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ בְּהַקְצִ֤יף אֹתִ֔י וְלֹ֖א נִחָֽמְתִּי׃ אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת kî ḵōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar ka·’ă·šer zå̄·mam·tī lə·hā·ra‘ lā·ḵem ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem bə·haq·ṣîp̄ ’ō·ṯî wə·lō ni·ḥā·mə·tî ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 14

“so now… I have resolved to do good again to Jerusalem and vvv Judah. Do not be afraid.

כֵּ֣ן הָאֵ֔לֶּה בַּיָּמִ֣ים זָמַ֙מְתִּי֙ לְהֵיטִ֥יב שַׁ֤בְתִּי אֶת־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וְאֶת־ בֵּ֣ית יְהוּדָ֑ה אַל־ תִּירָֽאוּ׃ kên hā·’êl·leh bay·yā·mîm zā·mam·tî lə·hê·ṭîḇ šaḇ·tî ’eṯ- yə·rū·šā·lim wə·’eṯ- bêṯ yə·hū·ḏāh ’al- tî·rā·’ū — WLC · 15

These are the things you must do: Speak truth to one… another, render true and sound judgments… in your gates,

אֵ֥לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּֽעֲשׂ֑וּ דַּבְּר֤וּ אֱמֶת֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־ רֵעֵ֔הוּ אֱמֶת֙ שָׁל֔וֹם וּמִשְׁפַּ֣ט שִׁפְט֖וּ בְּשַׁעֲרֵיכֶֽם׃ ’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer ta·‘ă·śū dab·bə·rū ’ĕ·meṯ ’îš ’eṯ- rê·‘ê·hū ’ĕ·meṯ šā·lō·wm ū·miš·paṭ šip̄·ṭū bə·ša·‘ă·rê·ḵem — WLC · 16

- do not plot evil in your hearts against your neighbor, and do not love to swear falsely, for I hate all these things,” declares the LORD.

Then the word of the LORD of Hosts came to me, saying,

דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת וַיְהִ֛י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ də·ḇar- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 18

“This is what the LORD of Hosts says: The fasts of the fourth, the fifth, the seventh, and the tenth [months] will become times of joy and gladness, cheerful feasts for the house of Judah. Therefore you are to love [both] truth and peace.”

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Peoples will yet come— the residents of many cities—

כֹּ֥ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אָמַ֖ר עַמִּ֔ים עֹ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר יָבֹ֣אוּ וְיֹשְׁבֵ֖י רַבּֽוֹת׃ עָרִ֥ים kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar ‘am·mîm ‘ōḏ ’ă·šer yā·ḇō·’ū wə·yō·šə·ḇê rab·bō·wṯ ‘ā·rîm — WLC · 20

and the residents of one city will go to another, saying: ‘Let us go… at once to plead before the LORD and to seek the LORD of Hosts. I myself am going.’

יֹשְׁבֵי֩ אַחַ֨ת וְֽהָלְכ֡וּ אֶל־ אַחַ֜ת לֵאמֹ֗ר נֵלְכָ֤ה הָלוֹךְ֙ לְחַלּוֹת֙ אֶת־ פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וּלְבַקֵּ֖שׁ אֶת־ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אָֽנִי׃ גַּם־ אֵלְכָ֖ה yō·šə·ḇê ’a·ḥaṯ wə·hā·lə·ḵū ’el- ’a·ḥaṯ lê·mōr nê·lə·ḵāh hā·lō·wḵ lə·ḥal·lō·wṯ ’eṯ- pə·nê Yah·weh ū·lə·ḇaq·qêš ’eṯ- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·nî gam- ’ê·lə·ḵāh — WLC · 21

And many peoples and strong nations will come to seek the LORD of Hosts in Jerusalem and to plead before the LORD.”

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue will tightly grasp the robe of a Jew…, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”

כֹּ֥ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָאוֹת֒ אָמַר֮ הָהֵ֔מָּה אֲשֶׁ֤ר בַּיָּמִ֣ים עֲשָׂרָ֣ה אֲנָשִׁ֔ים הַגּוֹיִ֑ם מִכֹּ֖ל לְשֹׁנ֣וֹת יַחֲזִ֙יקוּ֙ וְֽהֶחֱזִ֡יקוּ בִּכְנַף֩ יְהוּדִ֜י אִ֨ישׁ לֵאמֹ֗ר נֵֽלְכָה֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם כִּ֥י שָׁמַ֖עְנוּ אֱלֹהִ֥ים עִמָּכֶֽם׃ס kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar hā·hêm·māh ’ă·šer bay·yā·mîm ‘ă·śā·rāh ’ă·nā·šîm hag·gō·w·yim mik·kōl lə·šō·nō·wṯ ya·ḥă·zî·qū wə·he·ḥĕ·zî·qū biḵ·nap̄ yə·hū·ḏî ’îš lê·mōr nê·lə·ḵāh ‘im·mā·ḵem kî šā·ma‘·nū ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘im·mā·ḵem — WLC · 23
