Chapter 2
A Warning to the Priests

[“]And now this decree is for you, O priests:
𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌
וְעַתָּ֗ה הַזֹּ֖את הַמִּצְוָ֥ה אֲלֵיכֶ֛ם הַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃ wə·‘at·tāh haz·zōṯ ham·miṣ·wāh ’ă·lê·ḵem hak·kō·hă·nîm — WLC · 1

If you do not listen, and if you do not take [it] to heart to honor… My name,” says the LORD of Hosts, “I will send a curse among you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already begun to curse them, because you are not taking it to heart.

אִם־ לֹ֣א תִשְׁמְע֡וּ וְאִם־ לֹא֩ תָשִׂ֨ימוּ עַל־ לֵ֜ב לָתֵ֧ת כָּב֣וֹד לִשְׁמִ֗י אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֤י אֶת־ הַמְּאֵרָ֔ה בָכֶם֙ וְאָרוֹתִ֖י אֶת־ בִּרְכֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם וְגַם֙ אָרוֹתִ֔יהָ כִּ֥י אֵינְכֶ֖ם שָׂמִ֥ים עַל־ לֵֽב׃ ’im- lō ṯiš·mə·‘ū wə·’im- lō ṯā·śî·mū ‘al- lêḇ lā·ṯêṯ kā·ḇō·wḏ liš·mî ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ wə·šil·laḥ·tî ’eṯ- ham·mə·’ê·rāh ḇā·ḵem wə·’ā·rō·w·ṯî ’eṯ- bir·ḵō·w·ṯê·ḵem wə·ḡam ’ā·rō·w·ṯî·hā kî ’ê·nə·ḵem śā·mîm ‘al- lêḇ — WLC · 2

Behold, I will rebuke your descendants, and I will spread dung on your faces, the waste from your feasts, and you will be carried off with it.

הִנְנִ֨י גֹעֵ֤ר לָכֶם֙ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֔רַע וְזֵרִ֤יתִי פֶ֙רֶשׁ֙ עַל־ פְּנֵיכֶ֔ם פֶּ֖רֶשׁ חַגֵּיכֶ֑ם וְנָשָׂ֥א אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֵלָֽיו׃ hin·nî ḡō·‘êr lā·ḵem ’eṯ- haz·ze·ra‘ wə·zê·rî·ṯî p̄e·reš ‘al- pə·nê·ḵem pe·reš ḥag·gê·ḵem wə·nā·śā ’eṯ·ḵem ’ê·lāw — WLC · 3

Then you will know that I have sent you this commandment so that My covenant with Levi may continue,” says the LORD of Hosts.

וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֚י שִׁלַּ֣חְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם אֵ֖ת הַזֹּ֑את הַמִּצְוָ֣ה בְּרִיתִי֙ אֶת־ לֵוִ֔י לִֽהְי֤וֹת אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ wî·ḏa‘·tem kî šil·laḥ·tî ’ă·lê·ḵem ’êṯ haz·zōṯ ham·miṣ·wāh bə·rî·ṯî ’eṯ- lê·wî lih·yō·wṯ ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 4

“My covenant with him was [one] of life and peace, which I gave to him; it called for reverence, and he revered Me and stood in awe… of My name.

בְּרִיתִ֣י׀ אִתּ֗וֹ הָיְתָ֣ה הַֽחַיִּים֙ וְהַ֨שָּׁל֔וֹם וָאֶתְּנֵֽם־ ל֥וֹ מוֹרָ֖א וַיִּֽירָאֵ֑נִי נִחַ֥ת הֽוּא׃ וּמִפְּנֵ֥י שְׁמִ֖י bə·rî·ṯî ’it·tōw hā·yə·ṯāh ha·ḥay·yîm wə·haš·šā·lō·wm wā·’et·tə·nêm- lōw mō·w·rā way·yî·rā·’ê·nî ni·ḥaṯ hū ū·mip·pə·nê šə·mî — WLC · 5

True instruction was in his mouth, and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity.

אֱמֶת֙ תּוֹרַ֤ת הָיְתָ֣ה בְּפִ֔יהוּ לֹא־ וְעַוְלָ֖ה נִמְצָ֣א בִשְׂפָתָ֑יו הָלַ֣ךְ אִתִּ֔י בְּשָׁל֤וֹם וּבְמִישׁוֹר֙ הֵשִׁ֥יב וְרַבִּ֖ים מֵעָוֺֽן׃ ’ĕ·meṯ tō·w·raṯ hā·yə·ṯāh bə·p̄î·hū lō- wə·‘aw·lāh nim·ṣā ḇiś·p̄ā·ṯāw hā·laḵ ’it·tî bə·šā·lō·wm ū·ḇə·mî·šō·wr hê·šîḇ wə·rab·bîm mê·‘ā·wōn — WLC · 6

For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, because he is the messenger of the LORD of Hosts.

כִּֽי־ שִׂפְתֵ֤י כֹהֵן֙ יִשְׁמְרוּ־ דַ֔עַת יְבַקְשׁ֣וּ וְתוֹרָ֖ה מִפִּ֑יהוּ כִּ֛י הֽוּא׃ מַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהוָֽה־ צְבָא֖וֹת kî- śip̄·ṯê ḵō·hên yiš·mə·rū- ḏa·‘aṯ yə·ḇaq·šū wə·ṯō·w·rāh mip·pî·hū kî hū mal·’aḵ Yah·weh- ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 7

But you have departed from the way, and your instruction has caused many to stumble. You have violated the covenant of Levi,” says the LORD of Hosts.
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤎𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤔𐤋𐤕𐤌 𐤔𐤇𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕
וְאַתֶּם֙ סַרְתֶּ֣ם מִן־ הַדֶּ֔רֶךְ בַּתּוֹרָ֑ה רַבִּ֖ים הִכְשַׁלְתֶּ֥ם שִֽׁחַתֶּם֙ בְּרִ֣ית הַלֵּוִ֔י אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ wə·’at·tem sar·tem min- had·de·reḵ bat·tō·w·rāh rab·bîm hiḵ·šal·tem ši·ḥat·tem bə·rîṯ hal·lê·wî ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 8

“So I in turn have made you despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not kept My ways, but have shown partiality… in matters of the law.”

אֲנִ֞י וְגַם־ נָתַ֧תִּי אֶתְכֶ֛ם נִבְזִ֥ים וּשְׁפָלִ֖ים לְכָל־ הָעָ֑ם כְּפִ֗י אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֵֽינְכֶם֙ שֹׁמְרִ֣ים אֶת־ דְּרָכַ֔י וְנֹשְׂאִ֥ים פָּנִ֖ים בַּתּוֹרָֽה׃פ ’ă·nî wə·ḡam- nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ·ḵem niḇ·zîm ū·šə·p̄ā·lîm lə·ḵāl hā·‘ām kə·p̄î ’ă·šer ’ê·nə·ḵem šō·mə·rîm ’eṯ- də·rā·ḵay wə·nō·śə·’îm pā·nîm bat·tō·w·rāh — WLC · 9
Judah’s Unfaithfulness

Do we not all have one Father? Did not one God create us? Why then do we break faith with one another so as to profane the covenant of our fathers?
𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤊𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤁 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤏 𐤍𐤁𐤂𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤇𐤋𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅
הֲל֨וֹא לְכֻלָּ֔נוּ אֶחָד֙ אָ֤ב הֲל֛וֹא אֶֽחָ֖ד אֵ֥ל בְּרָאָ֑נוּ מַדּ֗וּעַ נִבְגַּד֙ אִ֣ישׁ בְּאָחִ֔יו לְחַלֵּ֖ל בְּרִ֥ית אֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃ hă·lō·w lə·ḵul·lā·nū ’e·ḥāḏ ’āḇ hă·lō·w ’e·ḥāḏ ’êl bə·rā·’ā·nū mad·dū·a‘ niḇ·gaḏ ’îš bə·’ā·ḥîw lə·ḥal·lêl bə·rîṯ ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū — WLC · 10

Judah has broken faith; an abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem. For Judah has profaned the LORD’s beloved sanctuary by marrying the daughter of a foreign god.

יְהוּדָ֔ה בָּגְדָ֣ה וְתוֹעֵבָ֛ה נֶעֶשְׂתָ֥ה בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וּבִירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם כִּ֣י׀ יְהוּדָ֗ה חִלֵּ֣ל יְהוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָהֵ֔ב קֹ֤דֶשׁ וּבָעַ֖ל בַּת־ נֵכָֽר׃ אֵ֥ל yə·hū·ḏāh bā·ḡə·ḏāh wə·ṯō·w·‘ê·ḇāh ne·‘eś·ṯāh ḇə·yiś·rā·’êl ū·ḇî·rū·šā·lim kî yə·hū·ḏāh ḥil·lêl Yah·weh ’ă·šer ’ā·hêḇ qō·ḏeš ū·ḇā·‘al baṯ- nê·ḵār ’êl — WLC · 11

[As] for the man who does this, may the LORD cut off from the tents of Jacob [everyone who is] awake and aware— even if he brings an offering to the LORD of Hosts.

לָאִ֨ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר יַעֲשֶׂ֙נָּה֙ יְהוָ֜ה יַכְרֵ֨ת מֵאָהֳלֵ֖י יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב עֵ֣ר וְעֹנֶ֔ה וּמַגִּ֣ישׁ מִנְחָ֔ה לַֽיהוָ֖ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃פ lā·’îš ’ă·šer ya·‘ă·śen·nāh Yah·weh yaḵ·rêṯ mê·’ā·ho·lê ya·‘ă·qōḇ ‘êr wə·‘ō·neh ū·mag·gîš min·ḥāh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 12

And this is another thing you do: You cover the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping and groaning, because He no longer regards… your offerings or receives them gladly from your hands.
𐤅𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤌𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤒𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤐𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤌
וְזֹאת֙ שֵׁנִ֣ית תַּֽעֲשׂ֔וּ כַּסּ֤וֹת מִזְבַּ֣ח יְהוָ֔ה דִּמְעָה֙ אֶת־ בְּכִ֖י וַֽאֲנָקָ֑ה מֵאֵ֣ין ע֗וֹד פְּנוֹת֙ אֶל־ הַמִּנְחָ֔ה וְלָקַ֥חַת רָצ֖וֹן מִיֶּדְכֶֽם׃ wə·zōṯ šê·nîṯ ta·‘ă·śū kas·sō·wṯ miz·baḥ Yah·weh dim·‘āh ’eṯ- bə·ḵî wa·’ă·nā·qāh mê·’ên ‘ō·wḏ pə·nō·wṯ ’el- ham·min·ḥāh wə·lā·qa·ḥaṯ rā·ṣō·wn mî·yeḏ·ḵem — WLC · 13

Yet you ask, “Why…?” It is because… the LORD has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have broken faith though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.

וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם עַל־ מָ֑ה עַ֡ל כִּי־ יְהוָה֩ הֵעִ֨יד בֵּינְךָ֜ וּבֵ֣ין׀ אֵ֣שֶׁת נְעוּרֶ֗יךָ אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתָּה֙ בָּגַ֣דְתָּה בָּ֔הּ וְהִ֥יא חֲבֶרְתְּךָ֖ וְאֵ֥שֶׁת בְּרִיתֶֽךָ׃ wa·’ă·mar·tem ‘al- māh ‘al kî- Yah·weh hê·‘îḏ bê·nə·ḵā ū·ḇên ’ê·šeṯ nə·‘ū·re·ḵā ’ă·šer ’at·tāh bā·ḡaḏ·tāh bāh wə·hî ḥă·ḇer·tə·ḵā wə·’ê·šeṯ bə·rî·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 14

Has not [the LORD] made them one, having a portion of the Spirit And why one? Because He seeks godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.

וְלֹא־ עָשָׂ֗ה אֶחָ֣ד וּשְׁאָ֥ר ר֙וּחַ֙ ל֔וֹ וּמָה֙ הָֽאֶחָ֔ד מְבַקֵּ֖שׁ אֱלֹהִ֑ים זֶ֣רַע וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּם֙ בְּר֣וּחֲכֶ֔ם אַל־ יִבְגֹּֽד׃ וּבְאֵ֥שֶׁת נְעוּרֶ֖יךָ wə·lō- ‘ā·śāh ’e·ḥāḏ ū·šə·’ār rū·aḥ lōw ū·māh hā·’e·ḥāḏ mə·ḇaq·qêš ’ĕ·lō·hîm ze·ra‘ wə·niš·mar·tem bə·rū·ḥă·ḵem ’al- yiḇ·gōḏ ū·ḇə·’ê·šeṯ nə·‘ū·re·ḵā — WLC · 15

“For I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “He [who divorces his wife] covers his garment with violence,” says the LORD of Hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith.

You have wearied the LORD with your words; yet you ask, “How have we wearied Him?” By saying, “All who do evil [are] good in the sight of the LORD, and in them He delights,” or, “Where is the God of justice?”
