Chapter 14
The Beheading of John
1
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus

and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.

[Now] Herod had arrested John [and] bound him and put [him] in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,

because John had been telling him -, vvv “It is not lawful for you to have her.

Although [Herod] wanted to kill [John], he was afraid of the people, because they regarded [John] as a prophet.

On Herod’s birthday…, however, the daughter of Herodias danced before them… and pleased Herod

so much that he promised with an oath to give to her whatever… she asked.

- Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

- The king was grieved, but because of [his] oaths and vvv his guests, he ordered that [her wish] be granted

and sent {to have} John beheaded in the prison.

- [John’s] head was brought in on a platter and presented to the girl, [who] carried [it] to her mother.
Καὶ αὐτοῦ ἡ κεφαλὴ ἠνέχθη ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἐδόθη τῷ κορασίῳ καὶ ἤνεγκεν τῇ αὐτῆς μητρὶ Kai autou hē kephalē ēnechthē epi pinaki kai edothē tō korasiō kai ēnenken tē autēs mētri — NA/TR · 11

Then [John’s] disciples came [and] took [his] body and buried it. And they went [and] informed Jesus.

The Feeding of the Five Thousand

When Jesus heard [ about John ], He withdrew… by boat vvv privately to a solitary place. But the crowds found out [about it] [and] followed Him on foot from the towns.
δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἀκούσας ἀνεχώρησεν ἐκεῖθεν ἐν πλοίῳ κατ’ ἰδίαν εἰς ἔρημον τόπον καὶ οἱ ὄχλοι ἀκούσαντες ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ πεζῇ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων de ho Iēsous Akousas anechōrēsen ekeithen en ploiō kat’ idian eis erēmon topon kai hoi ochloi akousantes ēkolouthēsan autō pezē apo tōn poleōn — NA/TR · 13

When He stepped ashore [and] saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick.
Καὶ ἐξελθὼν εἶδεν πολὺν ὄχλον καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτῶν τοὺς ἀρρώστους Kai exelthōn eiden polyn ochlon kai esplanchnisthē ep’ autois kai etherapeusen autōn tous arrōstous — NA/TR · 14

When evening came, the disciples came to Him [and] said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is already late… Dismiss the crowds so they can go to the villages [and] buy themselves some food.

“They do not need to go away, - Jesus replied -. “You give them [something] to eat.

“- We have here only… five loaves of bread and two fish, - they answered -.

“Bring them here to Me, - [Jesus] said.

And He directed the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish [and] looking up to heaven, He spoke a blessing. Then He broke the loaves [and] gave [them] to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the people.
καὶ κελεύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνακλιθῆναι ἐπὶ τοῦ χόρτου λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εὐλόγησεν καὶ κλάσας τοὺς ἄρτους ἔδωκεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις kai keleusas tous ochlous anaklithēnai epi tou chortou labōn tous pente artous kai tous dyo ichthyas anablepsas eis ton ouranon eulogēsen kai klasas tous artous edōken tois mathētais de hoi mathētai tois ochlois — NA/TR · 19

- vvv They all ate and were satisfied, and [the disciples] picked up twelve basketfuls… of broken pieces that were left over.

About five thousand men were vvv fed, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on Water

vvv Immediately [Jesus] made the disciples get into… the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side, while… He dismissed the crowds.
Καὶ εὐθέως ἠνάγκασεν τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ προάγειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πέραν ἕως οὗ ἀπολύσῃ τοὺς ὄχλους Kai eutheōs ēnankasen tous mathētas embēnai eis to ploion kai proagein auton eis to peran heōs hou apolysē tous ochlous — NA/TR · 22

After He had dismissed [them]…, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone,
καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος κατ’ ἰδίαν προσεύξασθαι δὲ ὀψίας γενομένης ἦν ἐκεῖ μόνος kai apolysas tous ochlous anebē eis to oros kat’ idian proseuxasthai de opsias genomenēs ēn ekei monos — NA/TR · 23

but the boat was already far… from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
δὲ τὸ πλοῖον ἀπεῖχεν ἤδη πολλοὺς σταδίους ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων γὰρ ὁ ἄνεμος ἦν ἐναντίος de to ploion apeichen ēdē pollous stadious apo tēs gēs basanizomenon hypo tōn kymatōn gar ho anemos ēn enantios — NA/TR · 24

vvv During the fourth watch of the night, [Jesus] went out to them, walking on the sea.
δὲ Τετάρτῃ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν de Tetartē phylakē tēs nyktos ēlthen pros autous peripatōn epi tēn thalassan — NA/TR · 25

When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost! they said -, and cried out in fear.

But Jesus spoke up… at once -: “Take courage! It is I. [Do] not be afraid.

“Lord, if [it] is You, Peter replied…, “command me to come to You on the water.
Κύριε εἰ εἶ σὺ δὲ Πέτρος Ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν ὁ αὐτῷ κέλευσόν με ἐλθεῖν πρὸς σὲ ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα Kyrie ei ei sy de Petros Apokritheis eipen ho autō keleuson me elthein pros se epi ta hydata — NA/TR · 28

“Come vvv vvv, said [Jesus]. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.

But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out -, “Lord, save me!

- Immediately Jesus reached out [His] hand [and] took hold of [Peter]. “[You] of little faith, He said -, “why… did you doubt?

And when they had climbed back into the boat, the wind died down.
Καὶ αὐτῶν ἀναβάντων εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ὁ ἄνεμος ἐκόπασεν Kai autōn anabantōn eis to ploion ho anemos ekopasen — NA/TR · 32

Then those who [were] in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God!
δὲ οἱ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες Ἀληθῶς εἶ Υἱὸς Θεοῦ de hoi en tō ploiō prosekynēsan autō legontes Alēthōs ei Huios Theou — NA/TR · 33
Jesus Heals at Gennesaret

When they had crossed over, they landed… at Gennesaret.
Καὶ διαπεράσαντες ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν εἰς Γεννησαρέτ Kai diaperasantes ēlthon epi tēn gēn eis Gennēsaret — NA/TR · 34

And when the men of that place recognized [Jesus], they sent word to all the surrounding region. [People] brought all the sick to Him
καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες ἐκείνου τοῦ τόπου ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν ἀπέστειλαν εἰς ὅλην ἐκείνην τὴν περίχωρον καὶ προσήνεγκαν πάντας τοὺς ἔχοντας κακῶς αὐτῷ kai hoi andres ekeinou tou topou epignontes auton apesteilan eis holēn ekeinēn tēn perichōron kai prosēnenkan pantas tous echontas kakōs autō — NA/TR · 35

and begged Him just to let them touch the fringe of His cloak. And all who touched [Him] were healed.
