Chapter 17
The Transfiguration
1
- After six days Jesus took with [Him] Peter, James, and John the brother of [James], and led them up… a high mountain by themselves.

[There] He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.

Suddenly… Moses and Elijah appeared before them, talking with [Jesus].

- Peter vvv said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, I will put up three shelters one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

While [Peter] was {still} speaking -, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!

When the disciples heard [this], they fell facedown… vvv in terror.

Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up, He said. “- vvv Do not be afraid.

And when they looked up…, they saw no one except… Jesus -.
δὲ ἐπάραντες αὐτῶν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς εἶδον οὐδένα εἰ μὴ μόνον Ἰησοῦν αὐτὸν de eparantes autōn tous ophthalmous eidon oudena ei mē monon Iēsoun auton — NA/TR · 8

As they were coming down… the mountain, Jesus commanded them -, “Do not tell anyone… [about this] vision until… the Son of Man has been raised from [the] dead.
Καὶ αὐτῶν καταβαινόντων ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς λέγων εἴπητε Μηδενὶ τὸ ὅραμα ἕως οὗ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐγερθῇ ἐκ νεκρῶν Kai autōn katabainontōn ek tou orous ho Iēsous eneteilato autois legōn eipēte Mēdeni to horama heōs hou ho Huios tou anthrōpou egerthē ek nekrōn — NA/TR · 9

- The disciples asked Him -, “Why then {do} the scribes say that Elijah must come first?
Καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Τί οὖν οἱ γραμματεῖς λέγουσιν ὅτι Ἠλίαν δεῖ ἐλθεῖν πρῶτον Kai hoi mathētai epērōtēsan auton legontes Ti oun hoi grammateis legousin hoti Ēlian dei elthein prōton — NA/TR · 10

δὲ Ὁ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Ἠλίας μὲν ἔρχεται καὶ ἀποκαταστήσει πάντα de Ho apokritheis eipen Ēlias men erchetai kai apokatastēsei panta — NA/TR · 11

But I tell you that Elijah {has} already come, and vvv they did not recognize him, but have done to him whatever they wished. In the same way…, the Son of Man will suffer at their hands…
δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι Ἠλίας ἤδη ἦλθεν καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνωσαν αὐτὸν ἀλλὰ ἐποίησαν ἐν αὐτῷ ὅσα ἠθέλησαν οὕτως καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου μέλλει πάσχειν ὑπ’ αὐτῶν de legō hymin hoti Ēlias ēdē ēlthen kai ouk epegnōsan auton alla epoiēsan en autō hosa ēthelēsan houtōs kai ho Huios tou anthrōpou mellei paschein hyp’ autōn — NA/TR · 12

Then the disciples understood that He was speaking to them about John the Baptist.
τότε οἱ μαθηταὶ συνῆκαν ὅτι εἶπεν αὐτοῖς περὶ Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ tote hoi mathētai synēkan hoti eipen autois peri Iōannou tou Baptistou — NA/TR · 13
The Boy with a Demon

When they came to the crowd, a man came up to [Jesus] [and] knelt before Him.
Καὶ ἐλθόντων πρὸς τὸν ὄχλον ἄνθρωπος προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ γονυπετῶν αὐτὸν Kai elthontōn pros ton ochlon anthrōpos prosēlthen autō gonypetōn auton — NA/TR · 14

- “Lord, have mercy on my son, he said. “- He has seizures and is suffering terribly. vvv He often falls into the fire [or] into the water.

- I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not heal him.

“O unbelieving and perverse generation! - Jesus replied -. “How long… must I remain with you? How long… must I put up with you? Bring [the boy] here to Me.
Ὦ ἄπιστος καὶ διεστραμμένη γενεὰ δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν ἕως πότε ἔσομαι μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἕως πότε ἀνέξομαι ὑμῶν φέρετέ αὐτὸν ὧδε μοι Ō apistos kai diestrammenē genea de ho Iēsous Apokritheis eipen heōs pote esomai meth’ hymōn heōs pote anexomai hymōn pherete auton hōde moi — NA/TR · 17

Then Jesus rebuked [the demon], and [it] came out of [the boy], and [he] was healed from that moment.
καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ καὶ τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐξῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ παῖς ἐθεραπεύθη ἀπὸ ἐκείνης τῆς ὥρας kai ho Iēsous epetimēsen autō kai to daimonion exēlthen ap’ autou kai ho pais etherapeuthē apo ekeinēs tēs hōras — NA/TR · 18
The Power of Faith

Afterward the disciples came to Jesus vvv privately [and] asked, “Why vvv vvv couldn’t we drive it out…?

“Because you [have] so little faith, - He answered… “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

The Second Prediction of the Passion

When they gathered together in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into [the] hands of men.
δὲ αὐτῶν Συστρεφομένων ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου Μέλλει παραδίδοσθαι εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων de autōn Systrephomenōn en tē Galilaia ho Iēsous eipen autois ho Huios tou anthrōpou Mellei paradidosthai eis cheiras anthrōpōn — NA/TR · 22

- They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised [to life]. And vvv [the disciples] were deeply grieved.

The Temple Tax

After they had arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma [tax] came to Peter and asked, “{Does} your Teacher vvv pay the two drachmas?
δὲ αὐτῶν Ἐλθόντων εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ οἱ λαμβάνοντες τὰ δίδραχμα προσῆλθον τῷ Πέτρῳ καὶ εἶπαν ὑμῶν Ὁ διδάσκαλος οὐ τελεῖ τὰ δίδραχμα de autōn Elthontōn eis Kapharnaoum hoi lambanontes ta didrachma prosēlthon tō Petrō kai eipan hymōn Ho didaskalos ou telei ta didrachma — NA/TR · 24

“Yes, he answered. When [Peter] entered… the house, Jesus preempted him. “What vvv do you think, Simon? He asked. “From whom {do} the kings of the earth collect customs [and] taxes: from their [own] sons, or from others?

“From others, vvv [Peter] answered. “Then the sons are exempt, Jesus said to him.
Ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλλοτρίων δέ Εἰπόντος Ἄρα¦Γε οἱ υἱοί εἰσιν ἐλεύθεροί ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἔφη αὐτῷ Apo tōn allotriōn de Eipontos Ara¦Ge hoi huioi eisin eleutheroi ho Iēsous ephē autō — NA/TR · 26

“But so that vvv we may not offend them, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the first fish you catch. When you open its mouth, you will find a four-drachma coin. Take [it] [and] give [it] to them for My tax and yours.
δὲ ἵνα μὴ σκανδαλίσωμεν αὐτούς πορευθεὶς εἰς θάλασσαν βάλε ἄγκιστρον καὶ ἆρον τὸν πρῶτον ἰχθὺν ἀναβάντα καὶ ἀνοίξας αὐτοῦ τὸ στόμα εὑρήσεις στατῆρα λαβὼν ἐκεῖνον δὸς αὐτοῖς ἀντὶ ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ de hina mē skandalisōmen autous poreutheis eis thalassan bale ankistron kai aron ton prōton ichthyn anabanta kai anoixas autou to stoma heurēseis statēra labōn ekeinon dos autois anti emou kai sou — NA/TR · 27
