Chapter 2
The Pilgrimage of the Magi

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during [the] time of King Herod, Magi from [the] east arrived in Jerusalem,
δὲ Τοῦ Ἰησοῦ γεννηθέντος ἐν Βηθλέεμ τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἐν ἡμέραις τοῦ βασιλέως Ἡρῴδου ἰδοὺ μάγοι ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν παρεγένοντο εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα de Tou Iēsou gennēthentos en Bēthleem tēs Ioudaias en hēmerais tou basileōs Hērōdou idou magoi apo anatolōn paregenonto eis Hierosolyma — NA/TR · 1

asking, “Where is the [One who] has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.

When King Herod heard [this], he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἡρῴδης Ἀκούσας ἐταράχθη καὶ πᾶσα Ἱεροσόλυμα μετ’ αὐτοῦ de ho basileus Hērōdēs Akousas etarachthē kai pasa Hierosolyma met’ autou — NA/TR · 3

And when he had assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked… them where the Christ was to be born.
καὶ συναγαγὼν πάντας τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ γραμματεῖς τοῦ λαοῦ ἐπυνθάνετο παρ’ αὐτῶν ποῦ ὁ Χριστὸς γεννᾶται kai synagagōn pantas tous archiereis kai grammateis tou laou epynthaneto par’ autōn pou ho Christos gennatai — NA/TR · 4

“In Bethlehem in Judea, - they replied…, “for this is what the prophet has written:
Ἐν Βηθλέεμ τῆς Ἰουδαίας Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ γὰρ οὕτως διὰ τοῦ προφήτου γέγραπται En Bēthleem tēs Ioudaias Hoi de eipan autō gar houtōs dia tou prophētou gegraptai — NA/TR · 5

‘[But] you, Bethlehem, [in the] land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of My people Israel.’
Καὶ σύ Βηθλέεμ γῆ Ἰούδα εἶ οὐδαμῶς ἐλαχίστη ἐν τοῖς ἡγεμόσιν Ἰούδα γὰρ ἐκ σοῦ ἐξελεύσεται ἡγούμενος ὅστις ποιμανεῖ τὸν μου λαόν τὸν Ἰσραήλ Kai sy Bēthleem gē Iouda ei oudamōs elachistē en tois hēgemosin Iouda gar ek sou exeleusetai hēgoumenos hostis poimanei ton mou laon ton Israēl — NA/TR · 6

Then Herod called the Magi secretly [and] learned from them the {exact} time the star had appeared.
Τότε Ἡρῴδης καλέσας τοὺς μάγους λάθρᾳ ἠκρίβωσεν παρ’ αὐτῶν τὸν χρόνον τοῦ ἀστέρος φαινομένου Tote Hērōdēs kalesas tous magous lathra ēkribōsen par’ autōn ton chronon tou asteros phainomenou — NA/TR · 7

And sending them to Bethlehem, he said: “Go [and] search carefully for the Child, and when you find [Him], report to me, so that I too may go [and] worship Him.
καὶ πέμψας αὐτοὺς εἰς Βηθλέεμ εἶπεν Πορευθέντες ἐξετάσατε ἀκριβῶς περὶ τοῦ παιδίου δὲ ἐπὰν εὕρητε ἀπαγγείλατέ μοι ὅπως κἀγὼ ἐλθὼν προσκυνήσω αὐτῷ kai pempsas autous eis Bēthleem eipen Poreuthentes exetasate akribōs peri tou paidiou de epan heurēte apangeilate moi hopōs kagō elthōn proskynēsō autō — NA/TR · 8

- After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until vvv it stood over the place where the Child was.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced vvv vvv with great delight.

[On] coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down [and] worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures [and] presented Him with gifts [of] gold and frankincense and myrrh.
καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν εἶδον τὸ παιδίον μετὰ τῆς αὐτοῦ μητρὸς Μαρίας καὶ πεσόντες προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ καὶ ἀνοίξαντες τοὺς αὐτῶν θησαυροὺς προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ δῶρα χρυσὸν καὶ λίβανον καὶ σμύρναν kai elthontes eis tēn oikian eidon to paidion meta tēs autou mētros Marias kai pesontes prosekynēsan autō kai anoixantes tous autōn thēsaurous prosēnenkan autō dōra chryson kai libanon kai smyrnan — NA/TR · 11

And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew to their country by another route.
Καὶ χρηματισθέντες κατ’ ὄναρ μὴ ἀνακάμψαι πρὸς Ἡρῴδην ἀνεχώρησαν εἰς τὴν αὐτῶν χώραν δι’ ἄλλης ὁδοῦ Kai chrēmatisthentes kat’ onar mē anakampsai pros Hērōdēn anechōrēsan eis tēn autōn chōran di’ allēs hodou — NA/TR · 12
The Flight to Egypt

When [the Magi] had gone, an angel of [the] Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! he said. “Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.
δὲ αὐτῶν Ἀναχωρησάντων ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος κυρίου φαίνεται τῷ Ἰωσὴφ κατ’ ὄναρ Ἐγερθεὶς λέγων παράλαβε τὸ παιδίον καὶ τὴν αὐτοῦ μητέρα καὶ φεῦγε εἰς Αἴγυπτον καὶ ἴσθι ἐκεῖ ἕως ἂν εἴπω σοι γὰρ Ἡρῴδης μέλλει ζητεῖν τὸ παιδίον τοῦ ἀπολέσαι αὐτό de autōn Anachōrēsantōn idou angelos kyriou phainetai tō Iōsēph kat’ onar Egertheis legōn paralabe to paidion kai tēn autou mētera kai pheuge eis Aigypton kai isthi ekei heōs an eipō soi gar Hērōdēs mellei zētein to paidion tou apolesai auto — NA/TR · 13

- So he got up, took the Child and His mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt,
Ὁ δὲ ἐγερθεὶς παρέλαβεν τὸ παιδίον καὶ τὴν αὐτοῦ μητέρα νυκτὸς καὶ ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς Αἴγυπτον Ho de egertheis parelaben to paidion kai tēn autou mētera nyktos kai anechōrēsen eis Aigypton — NA/TR · 14

- where he stayed until the death of Herod. This fulfilled what [the] Lord had spoken through the prophet -: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

Weeping and Great Mourning

When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the Magi, vvv he was filled with rage. Sending orders, he put to death all the boys in Bethlehem and… its vicinity [who were] two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the Magi.
Τότε Ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν ὅτι ἐνεπαίχθη ὑπὸ τῶν μάγων λίαν ἐθυμώθη καὶ ἀποστείλας ἀνεῖλεν πάντας τοὺς παῖδας τοὺς ἐν Βηθλέεμ καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς αὐτῆς ὁρίοις ἀπὸ διετοῦς καὶ κατωτέρω κατὰ τὸν χρόνον ὃν ἠκρίβωσεν παρὰ τῶν μάγων Tote Hērōdēs idōn hoti enepaichthē hypo tōn magōn lian ethymōthē kai aposteilas aneilen pantas tous paidas tous en Bēthleem kai en pasi tois autēs horiois apo dietous kai katōterō kata ton chronon hon ēkribōsen para tōn magōn — NA/TR · 16

Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
τότε τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ τοῦ προφήτου Ἰερεμίου λέγοντος ἐπληρώθη tote to rhēthen dia tou prophētou Ieremiou legontos eplērōthē — NA/TR · 17

“A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children and refusing… to be comforted, because they are no more.”
Φωνὴ ἠκούσθη ἐν Ῥαμὰ κλαυθμὸς καὶ πολύς ὀδυρμὸς Ῥαχὴλ κλαίουσα τὰ αὐτῆς τέκνα καὶ ἤθελεν οὐκ παρακληθῆναι ὅτι εἰσίν οὐκ Phōnē ēkousthē en Rhama klauthmos kai polys odyrmos Rhachēl klaiousa ta autēs tekna kai ēthelen ouk paraklēthēnai hoti eisin ouk — NA/TR · 18
The Return to Nazareth

After Herod died, an angel of [the] Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt.
δὲ τοῦ Ἡρῴδου Τελευτήσαντος ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος Κυρίου φαίνεται κατ’ ὄναρ τῷ Ἰωσὴφ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ de tou Hērōdou Teleutēsantos idou angelos Kyriou phainetai kat’ onar tō Iōsēph en Aigyptō — NA/TR · 19

“Get up! he said. “Take the Child and His mother and go to [the] land of Israel, for those seeking the vvv Child’s life are now dead.

- So [Joseph] got up, took the Child and His mother, and went to [the] land of Israel.

But when he learned that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee,
δὲ ἀκούσας ὅτι Ἀρχέλαος βασιλεύει τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἀντὶ τοῦ αὐτοῦ πατρὸς Ἡρῴδου ἐφοβήθη ἀπελθεῖν ἐκεῖ δὲ χρηματισθεὶς κατ’ ὄναρ ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὰ μέρη τῆς Γαλιλαίας de akousas hoti Archelaos basileuei tēs Ioudaias anti tou autou patros Hērōdou ephobēthē apelthein ekei de chrēmatistheis kat’ onar anechōrēsen eis ta merē tēs Galilaias — NA/TR · 22

and he went [and] lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophets: “He will be called a Nazarene.”
