Chapter 20
The Parable of the Workers

[“]For the kingdom of heaven is like vvv a landowner who went out early in [the] morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
γάρ ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἐστιν Ὁμοία ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅστις ἐξῆλθεν ἅμα πρωῒ μισθώσασθαι ἐργάτας εἰς αὐτοῦ τὸν ἀμπελῶνα gar hē basileia tōn ouranōn estin Homoia anthrōpō oikodespotē hostis exēlthen hama prōi misthōsasthai ergatas eis autou ton ampelōna — NA/TR · 1

- He agreed [to pay] [them] a denarius for the day [and] sent them into his vineyard.
δὲ συμφωνήσας μετὰ τῶν ἐργατῶν δηναρίου ἐκ τὴν ἡμέραν ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς αὐτοῦ τὸν ἀμπελῶνα de symphōnēsas meta tōn ergatōn dēnariou ek tēn hēmeran apesteilen autous eis autou ton ampelōna — NA/TR · 2

- About the third hour he went out [and] saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.
Καὶ περὶ τρίτην ὥραν ἐξελθὼν εἶδεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ ἀργούς Kai peri tritēn hōran exelthōn eiden allous hestōtas en tē agora argous — NA/TR · 3

‘You also go into [my] vineyard, he said -, ‘and I will pay you whatever… is right.
ὑμεῖς καὶ Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ εἶπεν ἐκείνοις καὶ δώσω ὑμῖν ὃ ἐὰν ᾖ δίκαιον hymeis kai Hypagete eis ton ampelōna kai eipen ekeinois kai dōsō hymin ho ean ē dikaion — NA/TR · 4

So they went. He went out again about [the] sixth [hour] and [the] ninth hour [and] did the same thing.
δὲ οἱ ἀπῆλθον δὲ ἐξελθὼν Πάλιν περὶ ἕκτην καὶ ἐνάτην ὥραν ἐποίησεν ὡσαύτως de hoi apēlthon de exelthōn Palin peri hektēn kai enatēn hōran epoiēsen hōsautōs — NA/TR · 5

- About the eleventh [hour] he went out [and] found still others standing [around]. ‘Why have you been standing here all day [long] doing nothing? he asked…
δὲ Περὶ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ἐξελθὼν εὗρεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας Τί ἑστήκατε ὧδε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀργοί καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς de Peri tēn hendekatēn exelthōn heuren allous hestōtas Ti hestēkate hōde holēn tēn hēmeran argoi kai legei autois — NA/TR · 6

‘Because no one has hired us, they answered… So he told them, ‘You also go into [my] vineyard.’

When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them [their] wages, starting with the last [ones hired] and moving on to the first.
δὲ Ὀψίας γενομένης ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος λέγει τῷ αὐτοῦ ἐπιτρόπῳ Κάλεσον τοὺς ἐργάτας καὶ ἀπόδος αὐτοῖς τὸν μισθόν ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐσχάτων ἕως τῶν πρώτων de Opsias genomenēs ho kyrios tou ampelōnos legei tō autou epitropō Kaleson tous ergatas kai apodos autois ton misthon arxamenos apo tōn eschatōn heōs tōn prōtōn — NA/TR · 8

- [The workers who were hired] about the eleventh hour came [and] each received a denarius.
Καὶ οἱ περὶ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ὥραν ἐλθόντες ἀνὰ ἔλαβον δηνάριον Kai hoi peri tēn hendekatēn hōran elthontes ana elabon dēnarion — NA/TR · 9

So when the original [workers] came, they assumed they would receive more. But each of them also received a denarius.
καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι ἐλθόντες ἐνόμισαν ὅτι λήμψονται πλεῖον καὶ ἀνὰ αὐτοί καὶ ἔλαβον τὸ δηνάριον kai hoi prōtoi elthontes enomisan hoti lēmpsontai pleion kai ana autoi kai elabon to dēnarion — NA/TR · 10

- On receiving [their pay], they began to grumble against the landowner.
δὲ Λαβόντες ἐγόγγυζον κατὰ τοῦ οἰκοδεσπότου de Labontes egongyzon kata tou oikodespotou — NA/TR · 11

‘These [men who were hired] last worked only one hour, they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.
Οὗτοι οἱ ἔσχατοι ἐποίησαν μίαν ὥραν λέγοντες καὶ ἐποίησας αὐτοὺς ἴσους ἡμῖν τοῖς βαστάσασι τὸ βάρος καὶ τὸν καύσωνα τῆς ἡμέρας Houtoi hoi eschatoi epoiēsan mian hōran legontes kai epoiēsas autous isous hēmin tois bastasasi to baros kai ton kausōna tēs hēmeras — NA/TR · 12

But he answered one of them -, ‘Friend, vvv I am not being unfair to you. vvv Did you not agree with me on one denarius?
δὲ Ὁ ἀποκριθεὶς ἑνὶ αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἑταῖρε οὐκ ἀδικῶ σε οὐχὶ συνεφώνησάς μοι δηναρίου de Ho apokritheis heni autōn eipen Hetaire ouk adikō se ouchi synephōnēsas moi dēnariou — NA/TR · 13

Take your [pay] and go. I want to give this last [man] the same as [I gave] you.
ἆρον σὸν τὸ καὶ ὕπαγε δὲ θέλω δοῦναι τούτῳ τῷ ἐσχάτῳ ὡς καὶ σοί aron son to kai hypage de thelō dounai toutō tō eschatō hōs kai soi — NA/TR · 14

vvv vvv Do I not have the right… to do as I please with what [is] mine? Or are you… envious because I am generous?
ἢ οὐκ ἔξεστίν μοι ποιῆσαι ὃ θέλω ἐν τοῖς ἐμοῖς ἢ ἐστιν σου ὁ ὀφθαλμός πονηρός ὅτι ἐγὼ εἰμι ἀγαθός ē ouk exestin moi poiēsai ho thelō en tois emois ē estin sou ho ophthalmos ponēros hoti egō eimi agathos — NA/TR · 15

So the last will be first, and the first [will be] last.”
Οὕτως οἱ ἔσχατοι ἔσονται πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι Houtōs hoi eschatoi esontai prōtoi kai hoi prōtoi eschatoi — NA/TR · 16
The Third Prediction of the Passion

As Jesus was going up - to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside and said -,
Καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀναβαίνων ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παρέλαβεν τοὺς δώδεκα μαθητὰς κατ’ ἰδίαν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Kai ho Iēsous anabainōn en tē hodō eis Hierosolyma parelaben tous dōdeka mathētas kat’ idian kai eipen autois — NA/TR · 17

“Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death
Ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθήσεται τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ γραμματεῦσιν καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτὸν εἰς θανάτῳ Idou anabainomen eis Hierosolyma kai ho Huios tou anthrōpou paradothēsetai tois archiereusin kai grammateusin kai katakrinousin auton eis thanatō — NA/TR · 18

and will deliver Him {over} to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. And on the third day He will be raised [to life].
καὶ παραδώσουσιν αὐτὸν εἰς τοῖς ἔθνεσιν τὸ ἐμπαῖξαι καὶ μαστιγῶσαι καὶ σταυρῶσαι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται kai paradōsousin auton eis tois ethnesin to empaixai kai mastigōsai kai staurōsai kai tē tritē hēmera egerthēsetai — NA/TR · 19
A Mother’s Request

Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to [Jesus] with her sons [and] knelt down to make a request… of Him.
Τότε ἡ μήτηρ Ζεβεδαίου τῶν υἱῶν προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ μετὰ αὐτῆς τῶν υἱῶν προσκυνοῦσα καὶ αἰτοῦσά τι ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ Tote hē mētēr Zebedaiou tōn huiōn prosēlthen autō meta autēs tōn huiōn proskynousa kai aitousa ti ap’ autou — NA/TR · 20

“What do you want? - He inquired -. She answered…, “Declare that in Your kingdom one of these two sons of mine may sit at Your right hand, and [the other] at Your left.

“vvv You do not know what you are asking, - Jesus replied -. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” “We can, [the brothers] answered…

“vvv You will indeed drink My cup,” [Jesus] said -. “But to sit at My right [or] left is not Mine to grant. [These seats belong] to those for whom My Father has prepared them.

When the ten heard about [this], they were indignant with the two brothers.

But Jesus called them aside… [and] said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and [their] superiors exercise authority over them.
δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς εἶπεν Οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἐθνῶν κατακυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι κατεξουσιάζουσιν αὐτῶν de ho Iēsous proskalesamenos autous eipen Oidate hoti hoi archontes tōn ethnōn katakyrieuousin autōn kai hoi megaloi katexousiazousin autōn — NA/TR · 25

vvv It shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever… wants to become great among you must be your servant,
οὐχ ἔσται οὕτως ἐν ὑμῖν ἀλλ’ ὃς ἐὰν θέλῃ γενέσθαι μέγας ἐν ὑμῖν ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος ouch estai houtōs en hymin all’ hos ean thelē genesthai megas en hymin estai hymōn diakonos — NA/TR · 26

and whoever… wants to be first among you must be your slave—
καὶ ὃς ἂν θέλῃ εἶναι πρῶτος ἐν ὑμῖν ἔσται ὑμῶν δοῦλος kai hos an thelē einai prōtos en hymin estai hymōn doulos — NA/TR · 27

just as the Son of Man vvv did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life [as] a ransom for many.
ὥσπερ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν διακονηθῆναι ἀλλὰ διακονῆσαι καὶ δοῦναι αὐτοῦ τὴν ψυχὴν λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν hōsper ho Huios tou anthrōpou ouk ēlthen diakonēthēnai alla diakonēsai kai dounai autou tēn psychēn lytron anti pollōn — NA/TR · 28
The Blind Men by the Road

- [As] they were leaving… Jericho, a large crowd followed Him.
Καὶ αὐτῶν ἐκπορευομένων ἀπὸ Ἰεριχὼ πολύς ὄχλος ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ Kai autōn ekporeuomenōn apo Ierichō polys ochlos ēkolouthēsen autō — NA/TR · 29

And there were two blind [men] sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out…, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!
καὶ ἰδοὺ δύο τυφλοὶ καθήμενοι παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν ἀκούσαντες ὅτι Ἰησοῦς παράγει ἔκραξαν λέγοντες Κύριε υἱὸς Δαυίδ ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς kai idou dyo typhloi kathēmenoi para tēn hodon akousantes hoti Iēsous paragei ekraxan legontes Kyrie huios Dauid eleēson hēmas — NA/TR · 30

- The crowd admonished them to be silent, but they cried out all the louder -, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!

- Jesus stopped [and] called them. “What do you want Me to do for you? He asked.

“Lord, they answered…, “let our eyes be opened.

- Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes, and at once they received their sight and followed Him.
