Chapter 22

The Parable of the Banquet

1

[Once] again, Jesus spoke… to them in parables -:

Καὶ πάλιν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἐν παραβολαῖς λέγων Kai palin ho Iēsous apokritheis eipen autois en parabolais legōn — NA/TR · 1

“The kingdom of heaven is like vvv a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.

ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν Ὡμοιώθη ἀνθρώπῳ βασιλεῖ ὅστις ἐποίησεν γάμους τῷ αὐτοῦ υἱῷ hē basileia tōn ouranōn Hōmoiōthē anthrōpō basilei hostis epoiēsen gamous tō autou huiō — NA/TR · 2

  • He sent his servants to call those he had invited to the banquet, but they refused… to come.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς δούλους καλέσαι τοὺς κεκλημένους εἰς τοὺς γάμους καὶ ἤθελον οὐκ ἐλθεῖν kai apesteilen autou tous doulous kalesai tous keklēmenous eis tous gamous kai ēthelon ouk elthein — NA/TR · 3

Again, he sent other servants [and] said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything [is] ready. Come to the wedding banquet.

Πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους λέγων Εἴπατε τοῖς κεκλημένοις Ἰδοὺ ἡτοίμακα μου τὸ ἄριστόν μου οἱ ταῦροί καὶ τὰ σιτιστὰ τεθυμένα καὶ πάντα ἕτοιμα δεῦτε εἰς τοὺς γάμους Palin apesteilen allous doulous legōn Eipate tois keklēmenois Idou hētoimaka mou to ariston mou hoi tauroi kai ta sitista tethymena kai panta hetoima deute eis tous gamous — NA/TR · 4

But they paid no attention [and] went away, one to his field, another to his business.

δὲ Οἱ ἀμελήσαντες ἀπῆλθον μὲν ὃς εἰς ἴδιον τὸν ἀγρόν δὲ ὃς ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τὴν ἐμπορίαν de Hoi amelēsantes apēlthon men hos eis idion ton agron de hos epi autou tēn emporian — NA/TR · 5

  • The rest seized his servants, mistreated [them], and killed [them].

δὲ οἱ λοιποὶ κρατήσαντες αὐτοῦ τοὺς δούλους ὕβρισαν καὶ ἀπέκτειναν de hoi loipoi kratēsantes autou tous doulous hybrisan kai apekteinan — NA/TR · 6

  • The king was enraged, and he sent his troops to destroy those murderers and burn their city.

δὲ Ὁ βασιλεὺς ὠργίσθη καὶ πέμψας αὐτοῦ τὰ στρατεύματα ἀπώλεσεν ἐκείνους τοὺς φονεῖς καὶ ἐνέπρησεν αὐτῶν τὴν πόλιν de Ho basileus ōrgisthē kai pempsas autou ta strateumata apōlesen ekeinous tous phoneis kai eneprēsen autōn tēn polin — NA/TR · 7

Then he said to his servants, ‘- The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited were not worthy.

Go therefore to the crossroads… and invite to the banquet as many as… you can find.

πορεύεσθε οὖν ἐπὶ τὰς διεξόδους τῶν ὁδῶν καὶ καλέσατε εἰς τοὺς γάμους ὅσους ἐὰν εὕρητε poreuesthe oun epi tas diexodous tōn hodōn kai kalesate eis tous gamous hosous ean heurēte — NA/TR · 9

So the servants went out into the streets [and] gathered everyone… they could find, both evil and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

Καὶ ἐκεῖνοι οἱ δοῦλοι ἐξελθόντες εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς συνήγαγον πάντας οὓς εὗρον τε πονηρούς καὶ ἀγαθούς καὶ ὁ γάμος ἐπλήσθη ἀνακειμένων Kai ekeinoi hoi douloi exelthontes eis tas hodous synēgagon pantas hous heuron te ponērous kai agathous kai ho gamos eplēsthē anakeimenōn — NA/TR · 10

But when the king came in to see the guests, he spotted a man [who was] not dressed in wedding clothes.

δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς Εἰσελθὼν θεάσασθαι τοὺς ἀνακειμένους εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον ἐκεῖ οὐκ ἐνδεδυμένον γάμου ἔνδυμα de ho basileus Eiselthōn theasasthai tous anakeimenous eiden anthrōpon ekei ouk endedymenon gamou endyma — NA/TR · 11

‘Friend, he asked -, ‘how did you get in here vvv without wedding clothes? But [the man] was speechless.

Ἑταῖρε καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ πῶς εἰσῆλθες ὧδε μὴ ἔχων γάμου ἔνδυμα δὲ Ὁ ἐφιμώθη Hetaire kai legei autō pōs eisēlthes hōde mē echōn gamou endyma de Ho ephimōthē — NA/TR · 12

Then the king told the servants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, [and] throw him… into the outer darkness, [where] there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς εἶπεν τοῖς διακόνοις Δήσαντες αὐτοῦ χεῖρας καὶ πόδας ἐκβάλετε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ τὸ ἐξώτερον σκότος ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων Tote ho basileus eipen tois diakonois Dēsantes autou cheiras kai podas ekbalete auton eis to to exōteron skotos ekei estai ho klauthmos kai ho brygmos tōn odontōn — NA/TR · 13

For many are called, but few [are] chosen.

γάρ Πολλοὶ εἰσιν κλητοὶ δὲ ὀλίγοι ἐκλεκτοί gar Polloi eisin klētoi de oligoi eklektoi — NA/TR · 14

Paying Taxes to Caesar

Then the Pharisees went out [and] conspired… to trap [Jesus] in His words.

Τότε οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πορευθέντες ἔλαβον συμβούλιον ὅπως παγιδεύσωσιν αὐτὸν ἐν λόγῳ Tote hoi Pharisaioi poreuthentes elabon symboulion hopōs pagideusōsin auton en logō — NA/TR · 15

  • They sent their disciples to Him along with the Herodians. “Teacher, they said, “we know that You are honest and [that] You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You seek favor from vvv no one, because vvv You pay no attention to external appearance…

καὶ ἀποστέλλουσιν αὐτῶν τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτῷ μετὰ τῶν Ἡρῳδιανῶν Διδάσκαλε λέγοντες οἴδαμεν ὅτι εἶ ἀληθὴς καὶ διδάσκεις τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ σοι μέλει περὶ οὐ οὐδενός γὰρ οὐ βλέπεις εἰς πρόσωπον ἀνθρώπων kai apostellousin autōn tous mathētas autō meta tōn Hērōdianōn Didaskale legontes oidamen hoti ei alēthēs kai didaskeis tēn hodon tou Theou en alētheia kai soi melei peri ou oudenos gar ou blepeis eis prosōpon anthrōpōn — NA/TR · 16

So tell us what You think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?

οὖν εἰπὸν ἡμῖν τί σοι δοκεῖ ἔξεστιν δοῦναι κῆνσον Καίσαρι ἢ οὔ oun eipon hēmin ti soi dokei exestin dounai kēnson Kaisari ē ou — NA/TR · 17

But Jesus knew their evil intent [and] said, “You hypocrites, why are you testing Me?

δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Γνοὺς αὐτῶν τὴν πονηρίαν εἶπεν ὑποκριταί Τί πειράζετε με de ho Iēsous Gnous autōn tēn ponērian eipen hypokritai Ti peirazete me — NA/TR · 18

Show Me the coin used for the tax. And they brought Him a denarius.

ἐπιδείξατέ μοι τὸ νόμισμα τοῦ κήνσου δὲ Οἱ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ δηνάριον epideixate moi to nomisma tou kēnsou de Hoi prosēnenkan autō dēnarion — NA/TR · 19

“Whose image [is] this, He asked…, “and whose inscription?

Τίνος ἡ εἰκὼν αὕτη Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς καὶ ἡ ἐπιγραφή Tinos hē eikōn hautē Kai legei autois kai hē epigraphē — NA/TR · 20

“Caesar’s, they answered… So [Jesus] told them, “Give to Caesar what [is] Caesar’s, and to God what [is] God’s.

Καίσαρος Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οὖν Τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἀπόδοτε Καίσαρι τὰ Καίσαρος καὶ τῷ Θεῷ τὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ Kaisaros Legousin autō oun Tote legei autois Apodote Kaisari ta Kaisaros kai tō Theō ta tou Theou — NA/TR · 21

And when they heard [this], they were amazed. So they left Him [and] went away.

The Sadducees and the Resurrection

  • That [same] day [the] Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to [Jesus] and questioned Him.

Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ Σαδδουκαῖοι λέγοντες εἶναι μὴ ἀνάστασιν προσῆλθον αὐτῷ καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν En ekeinē tē hēmera Saddoukaioi legontes einai mē anastasin prosēlthon autō kai epērōtēsan auton — NA/TR · 23

“Teacher, they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies without having children, his brother is to marry the widow and raise up offspring for [him].

Διδάσκαλε λέγοντες Μωϋσῆς εἶπεν Ἐάν τις ἀποθάνῃ μὴ ἔχων τέκνα αὐτοῦ ὁ ἀδελφὸς ἐπιγαμβρεύσει αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ ἀναστήσει σπέρμα τῷ αὐτοῦ ἀδελφῷ Didaskale legontes Mōusēs eipen Ean tis apothanē mē echōn tekna autou ho adelphos epigambreusei autou tēn gynaika kai anastēsei sperma tō autou adelphō — NA/TR · 24

Now there were seven brothers among us. The first [one] married and died without having children. [So] he left his wife to his brother.

δὲ ἦσαν ἑπτὰ ἀδελφοί παρ’ ἡμῖν καὶ ὁ πρῶτος γήμας καὶ ἐτελεύτησεν μὴ ἔχων σπέρμα ἀφῆκεν αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα τῷ αὐτοῦ ἀδελφῷ de ēsan hepta adelphoi par’ hēmin kai ho prōtos gēmas kai eteleutēsen mē echōn sperma aphēken autou tēn gynaika tō autou adelphō — NA/TR · 25

The same thing happened to… the second and third [brothers], down to the seventh.

ὁμοίως καὶ ὁ δεύτερος καὶ ὁ τρίτος ἕως τῶν ἑπτά homoiōs kai ho deuteros kai ho tritos heōs tōn hepta — NA/TR · 26

And last of all, the woman died.

δὲ ὕστερον πάντων ἡ γυνή ἀπέθανεν de hysteron pantōn hē gynē apethanen — NA/TR · 27

In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? For all of them were married to her.

ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει οὖν τίνος γυνή ἔσται τῶν ἑπτὰ γὰρ πάντες ἔσχον αὐτήν en tē anastasei oun tinos gynē estai tōn hepta gar pantes eschon autēn — NA/TR · 28

  • Jesus answered -, “You are mistaken [because] vvv you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πλανᾶσθε μὴ εἰδότες τὰς γραφὰς μηδὲ τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ Θεοῦ de ho Iēsous Apokritheis eipen autois Planasthe mē eidotes tas graphas mēde tēn dynamin tou Theou — NA/TR · 29

  • In the resurrection, vvv [people] will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like [the] angels in heaven.

γὰρ ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει οὔτε γαμοῦσιν οὔτε γαμίζονται ἀλλ’ εἰσιν ὡς ἄγγελοι ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ gar en tē anastasei oute gamousin oute gamizontai all’ eisin hōs angeloi en tō ouranō — NA/TR · 30

But concerning the resurrection of the dead, vvv have you not read what - God said to you -:

δὲ περὶ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τῶν νεκρῶν οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε τὸ ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ ῥηθὲν ὑμῖν λέγοντος de peri tēs anastaseōs tōn nekrōn ouk anegnōte to hypo tou Theou rhēthen hymin legontos — NA/TR · 31

‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’ He is not the God of [the] dead, but of [the] living.

When the crowds heard [this], they were astonished at His teaching.

Καὶ οἱ ὄχλοι ἀκούσαντες ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τῇ διδαχῇ Kai hoi ochloi akousantes exeplēssonto epi autou tē didachē — NA/TR · 33

The Greatest Commandment

And [when] the Pharisees heard that [Jesus] had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered… together.

δὲ Οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἐφίμωσεν τοὺς Σαδδουκαίους συνήχθησαν αὐτό τὸ ἐπὶ de Hoi Pharisaioi akousantes hoti ephimōsen tous Saddoukaious synēchthēsan auto to epi — NA/TR · 34

  • One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question:

καὶ εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν νομικὸς πειράζων αὐτόν ἐπηρώτησεν kai heis ex autōn nomikos peirazōn auton epērōtēsen — NA/TR · 35

“Teacher, which commandment [is the] greatest in the Law?

Διδάσκαλε ποία ἐντολὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ νόμῳ Didaskale poia entolē megalē en tō nomō — NA/TR · 36

  • [Jesus] declared -, “‘Love [the] Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

δὲ Ὁ ἔφη αὐτῷ Ἀγαπήσεις κύριον σου τὸν Θεόν ἐν ὅλῃ σου τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ σου τῇ ψυχῇ καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ σου τῇ διανοίᾳ de Ho ephē autō Agapēseis kyrion sou ton Theon en holē sou tē kardia kai en holē sou tē psychē kai en holē sou tē dianoia — NA/TR · 37

This is the first and greatest commandment.

αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ πρώτη καὶ μεγάλη ἐντολή hautē estin hē prōtē kai megalē entolē — NA/TR · 38

And [the] second [is] like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

δὲ δευτέρα ὁμοία αὐτῇ Ἀγαπήσεις σου τὸν πλησίον ὡς σεαυτόν de deutera homoia autē Agapēseis sou ton plēsion hōs seauton — NA/TR · 39

All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

ὅλος ὁ νόμος καὶ οἱ προφῆται κρέμαται ἐν ταύταις δυσὶν ταῖς ἐντολαῖς holos ho nomos kai hoi prophētai krematai en tautais dysin tais entolais — NA/TR · 40

Whose Son Is the Christ?

While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus questioned them:

δὲ τῶν Φαρισαίων Συνηγμένων ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτοὺς de tōn Pharisaiōn Synēgmenōn ho Iēsous epērōtēsen autous — NA/TR · 41

  • “What {do} you think about the Christ? Whose son is He? “- David’s, they answered -.

λέγων Τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ περὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ τίνος υἱός ἐστιν Τοῦ Δαυίδ Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ legōn Ti hymin dokei peri tou Christou tinos huios estin Tou Dauid Legousin autō — NA/TR · 42

[Jesus] said to them, “How then {does} David in [the] Spirit call Him ‘Lord’? [For] he says:

‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until… I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’

So if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how can He be [David’s] son?

  • No one was able to answer a word, [and] from that day [on] [no one] dared to question Him [any] further.
