Chapter 23
Woes to Scribes and Pharisees
1
Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples:
Τότε ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐλάλησεν τοῖς ὄχλοις καὶ τοῖς αὐτοῦ μαθηταῖς Tote ho Iēsous elalēsen tois ochlois kai tois autou mathētais — NA/TR · 1

- “The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.
λέγων οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἐκάθισαν Ἐπὶ Μωϋσέως τῆς καθέδρας legōn hoi grammateis kai hoi Pharisaioi ekathisan Epi Mōuseōs tēs kathedras — NA/TR · 2

So practice and observe everything… they tell you. But {do} not do what they do, for vvv they do not practice what they preach.
οὖν ποιήσατε καὶ τηρεῖτε πάντα ὅσα ἐὰν εἴπωσιν ὑμῖν δὲ μὴ ποιεῖτε κατὰ αὐτῶν τὰ ἔργα γὰρ οὐ ποιοῦσιν καὶ λέγουσιν oun poiēsate kai tēreite panta hosa ean eipōsin hymin de mē poieite kata autōn ta erga gar ou poiousin kai legousin — NA/TR · 3

- They tie up heavy, burdensome loads and lay [them] on men’s shoulders, but they themselves vvv are not willing vvv vvv to lift a finger to move them.
δὲ δεσμεύουσιν βαρέα καὶ δυσβάστακτα φορτία καὶ ἐπιτιθέασιν ἐπὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων τοὺς ὤμους δὲ αὐτοὶ οὐ θέλουσιν τῷ αὐτῶν δακτύλῳ κινῆσαι αὐτά de desmeuousin barea kai dysbastakta phortia kai epititheasin epi tōn anthrōpōn tous ōmous de autoi ou thelousin tō autōn daktylō kinēsai auta — NA/TR · 4

- All their deeds are done for men to see. They broaden their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.

- They love the places of honor at banquets, the chief seats in the synagogues,

- the greetings in the marketplaces, and the title of ‘Rabbi’ by [which they are addressed].
καὶ τοὺς ἀσπασμοὺς ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς καὶ καλεῖσθαι Ῥαββί ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων kai tous aspasmous en tais agorais kai kaleisthai Rhabbi hypo tōn anthrōpōn — NA/TR · 7

But you vvv are not to be called ‘Rabbi, for you [have] one Teacher, and you are all brothers.
δὲ Ὑμεῖς μὴ κληθῆτε Ῥαββί γάρ ὑμῶν ἐστιν εἷς ὁ διδάσκαλος δὲ ὑμεῖς ἐστε πάντες ἀδελφοί de Hymeis mē klēthēte Rhabbi gar hymōn estin heis ho didaskalos de hymeis este pantes adelphoi — NA/TR · 8

And do not call anyone… on earth your father, for you [have] one Father, who [is] in heaven.
καὶ καλέσητε μὴ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὑμῶν πατέρα γάρ ὑμῶν ἐστιν εἷς ὁ Πατὴρ ὁ οὐράνιος kai kalesēte mē epi tēs gēs hymōn patera gar hymōn estin heis ho Patēr ho ouranios — NA/TR · 9

Nor are you to be called instructors, for you [have] one Instructor, the Christ.

- The greatest among you shall be your servant.
δὲ ὁ μείζων ὑμῶν ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος de ho meizōn hymōn estai hymōn diakonos — NA/TR · 11

For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
δὲ Ὅστις ὑψώσει ἑαυτὸν ταπεινωθήσεται καὶ ὅστις ταπεινώσει ἑαυτὸν ὑψωθήσεται de Hostis hypsōsei heauton tapeinōthēsetai kai hostis tapeinōsei heauton hypsōthēsetai — NA/TR · 12

- Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces… You yourselves vvv do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter.
δὲ Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι κλείετε τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων γὰρ ὑμεῖς οὐκ εἰσέρχεσθε οὐδὲ ἀφίετε εἰσελθεῖν τοὺς εἰσερχομένους de Ouai hymin grammateis kai Pharisaioi hypokritai hoti kleiete tēn basileian tōn ouranōn emprosthen tōn anthrōpōn gar hymeis ouk eiserchesthe oude aphiete eiselthein tous eiserchomenous — NA/TR · 13

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You traverse - [land] and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes [one], you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.
Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι περιάγετε τὴν τὴν ξηρὰν καὶ θάλασσαν ποιῆσαι ἕνα προσήλυτον καὶ ὅταν γένηται ποιεῖτε αὐτὸν διπλότερον υἱὸν γεέννης ὑμῶν Ouai hymin grammateis kai Pharisaioi hypokritai hoti periagete tēn tēn xēran kai thalassan poiēsai hena prosēlyton kai hotan genētai poieite auton diploteron huion geennēs hymōn — NA/TR · 15

Woe to you, blind guides! [You] say, ‘If anyone… swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone… swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.
Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν τυφλοὶ ὁδηγοὶ οἱ λέγοντες Ὃς ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ ναῷ ἐστιν οὐδέν δ’ ὃς ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ χρυσῷ τοῦ ναοῦ ὀφείλει Ouai hymin typhloi hodēgoi hoi legontes Hos an omosē en tō naō estin ouden d’ hos an omosē en tō chrysō tou naou opheilei — NA/TR · 16

[You] blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes it sacred…?
τυφλοί καὶ μωροὶ γὰρ τίς ἐστίν μείζων ὁ χρυσὸς ἢ ὁ ναὸς ὁ ἁγιάσας τὸν χρυσόν typhloi kai mōroi gar tis estin meizōn ho chrysos ē ho naos ho hagiasas ton chryson — NA/TR · 17

And [you say], ‘If anyone… swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone… swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.
καί Ὃς ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ ἐστιν οὐδέν δ’ ὃς ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ δώρῳ τῷ ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ ὀφείλει kai Hos an omosē en tō thysiastēriō estin ouden d’ hos an omosē en tō dōrō tō epanō autou opheilei — NA/TR · 18

You blind men! Which [is] greater: the gift, or the altar that makes it sacred…?
τυφλοί γὰρ τί μεῖζον τὸ δῶρον ἢ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ ἁγιάζον τὸ δῶρον typhloi gar ti meizon to dōron ē to thysiastērion to hagiazon to dōron — NA/TR · 19

So then, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
οὖν ὁ ὀμόσας ἐν τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ ὀμνύει ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ oun ho omosas en tō thysiastēriō omnyei en autō kai en pasi tois epanō autou — NA/TR · 20

And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the [One] who dwells in it.
καὶ ὁ ὀμόσας ἐν τῷ ναῷ ὀμνύει ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐν τῷ κατοικοῦντι αὐτόν kai ho omosas en tō naō omnyei en autō kai en tō katoikounti auton — NA/TR · 21

And he who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the [One] who sits on it.
καὶ ὁ ὀμόσας ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ὀμνύει ἐν τοῦ Θεοῦ τῷ θρόνῳ καὶ ἐν τῷ καθημένῳ ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ kai ho omosas en tō ouranō omnyei en tou Theou tō thronō kai en tō kathēmenō epanō autou — NA/TR · 22

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay tithes of mint, - dill, and cumin. But you have disregarded the weightier [matters] of the law: justice, - mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without… neglecting the former.
Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι ἀποδεκατοῦτε τὸ ἡδύοσμον καὶ τὸ ἄνηθον καὶ τὸ κύμινον καὶ ἀφήκατε τὰ βαρύτερα τοῦ νόμου τὴν κρίσιν καὶ τὸ ἔλεος καὶ τὴν πίστιν ἔδει ποιῆσαι ταῦτα δὲ μὴ ἀφιέναι κἀκεῖνα Ouai hymin grammateis kai Pharisaioi hypokritai hoti apodekatoute to hēdyosmon kai to anēthon kai to kyminon kai aphēkate ta barytera tou nomou tēn krisin kai to eleos kai tēn pistin edei poiēsai tauta de mē aphienai kakeina — NA/TR · 23

You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
τυφλοί ὁδηγοὶ οἱ διϋλίζοντες τὸν κώνωπα δὲ καταπίνοντες τὴν κάμηλον typhloi hodēgoi hoi diulizontes ton kōnōpa de katapinontes tēn kamēlon — NA/TR · 24

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι καθαρίζετε τὸ ἔξωθεν τοῦ ποτηρίου καὶ τῆς παροψίδος δὲ ἔσωθεν γέμουσιν ἐξ ἁρπαγῆς καὶ ἀκρασίας Ouai hymin grammateis kai Pharisaioi hypokritai hoti katharizete to exōthen tou potēriou kai tēs paropsidos de esōthen gemousin ex harpagēs kai akrasias — NA/TR · 25

Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, so that the outside may become clean as well.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead [men’s] bones and every kind of impurity.
Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι παρομοιάζετε κεκονιαμένοις τάφοις οἵτινες μὲν φαίνονται ὡραῖοι ἔξωθεν δὲ ἔσωθεν γέμουσιν νεκρῶν ὀστέων καὶ πάσης ἀκαθαρσίας Ouai hymin grammateis kai Pharisaioi hypokritai hoti paromoiazete kekoniamenois taphois hoitines men phainontai hōraioi exōthen de esōthen gemousin nekrōn osteōn kai pasēs akatharsias — NA/TR · 27

In the same way…, on the outside you appear to be… righteous, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
οὕτως καὶ μὲν ἔξωθεν ὑμεῖς φαίνεσθε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις δίκαιοι δέ ἔσωθεν ἐστε μεστοὶ ὑποκρίσεως καὶ ἀνομίας houtōs kai men exōthen hymeis phainesthe tois anthrōpois dikaioi de esōthen este mestoi hypokriseōs kai anomias — NA/TR · 28

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous.
Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι οἰκοδομεῖτε τοὺς τάφους τῶν προφητῶν καὶ κοσμεῖτε τὰ μνημεῖα τῶν δικαίων Ouai hymin grammateis kai Pharisaioi hypokritai hoti oikodomeite tous taphous tōn prophētōn kai kosmeite ta mnēmeia tōn dikaiōn — NA/TR · 29

And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, vvv vvv we would not have been partners with them in [shedding] the blood of the prophets.
καὶ λέγετε Εἰ ἤμεθα ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἡμῶν τῶν πατέρων ἂν οὐκ ἤμεθα κοινωνοὶ αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ αἵματι τῶν προφητῶν kai legete Ei ēmetha en tais hēmerais hēmōn tōn paterōn an ouk ēmetha koinōnoi autōn en tō haimati tōn prophētōn — NA/TR · 30

So you testify against yourselves that you are [the] sons of those who murdered the prophets.

Fill up -, then, the measure [of the sin] of your fathers.
πληρώσατε ὑμεῖς καὶ τὸ μέτρον τῶν ὑμῶν πατέρων plērōsate hymeis kai to metron tōn hymōn paterōn — NA/TR · 32

You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape… the sentence of hell?
ὄφεις γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν πῶς φύγητε ἀπὸ τῆς κρίσεως τῆς γεέννης opheis gennēmata echidnōn pōs phygēte apo tēs kriseōs tēs geennēs — NA/TR · 33

Because of this -, I am sending you prophets and wise [men] and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and [others] you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town.
Διὰ τοῦτο ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω πρὸς ὑμᾶς προφήτας καὶ σοφοὺς καὶ γραμματεῖς ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀποκτενεῖτε καὶ σταυρώσετε καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν μαστιγώσετε ἐν ὑμῶν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ διώξετε ἀπὸ πόλεως εἰς πόλιν Dia touto idou egō apostellō pros hymas prophētas kai sophous kai grammateis ex autōn apokteneite kai staurōsete kai ex autōn mastigōsete en hymōn tais synagōgais kai diōxete apo poleōs eis polin — NA/TR · 34

And so upon you will come all [the] righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
ὅπως ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἔλθῃ πᾶν δίκαιον αἷμα ἐκχυννόμενον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ δικαίου Ἅβελ ἕως τοῦ αἵματος Ζαχαρίου υἱοῦ Βαραχίου ὃν ἐφονεύσατε μεταξὺ τοῦ ναοῦ καὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου hopōs eph’ hymas elthē pan dikaion haima ekchynnomenon epi tēs gēs apo tou haimatos tou dikaiou Habel heōs tou haimatos Zachariou huiou Barachiou hon ephoneusate metaxy tou naou kai tou thysiastēriou — NA/TR · 35

Truly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem
37
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her, how often I have longed to gather your children {together}, as… a hen gathers her chicks under [her] wings, but vvv you were unwilling!

Look, your house is left to you desolate.

For I tell you [that] vvv vvv you will not see Me again… until… you say, ‘Blessed [is] He who comes in [the] name of [the] Lord.’
