Chapter 24
Temple Destruction and Other Signs
1
[As] Jesus left… the temple [and] was walking away, His disciples came up to [Him] to point out - [its] buildings.
2
“vvv Do you see all these things? vvv vvv vvv He replied… “Truly I tell you, vvv not one stone here will be left on [another]; [every one]… will be thrown down.
3
[While] [Jesus] was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him vvv privately. “Tell us, they said, “when {will} these things happen, and what [will be] the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?
δὲ αὐτοῦ Καθημένου ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄρους τῶν Ἐλαιῶν οἱ μαθηταὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ κατ’ ἰδίαν Εἰπὲ ἡμῖν λέγοντες πότε ταῦτα ἔσται καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον σῆς τῆς παρουσίας καὶ συντελείας τοῦ αἰῶνος de autou Kathēmenou epi tou orous tōn Elaiōn hoi mathētai prosēlthon autō kat’ idian Eipe hēmin legontes pote tauta estai kai ti to sēmeion sēs tēs parousias kai synteleias tou aiōnos — NA/TR · 3
4
- Jesus answered…, “See to it that no one… deceives you.
5
For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ, and will deceive many…
6
- You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it vvv that you are not alarmed. [These things] must happen, but the end is still to come.
δὲ μελλήσετε ἀκούειν πολέμους καὶ ἀκοὰς πολέμων ὁρᾶτε μὴ θροεῖσθε γὰρ δεῖ γενέσθαι ἀλλ’ τὸ τέλος ἐστὶν οὔπω de mellēsete akouein polemous kai akoas polemōn horate mē throeisthe gar dei genesthai all’ to telos estin oupō — NA/TR · 6
7
- Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in [various] places.
8
- All these [are] [the] beginning of birth pains.
δὲ πάντα ταῦτα ἀρχὴ ὠδίνων de panta tauta archē ōdinōn — NA/TR · 8
Witnessing to All Nations
9
Then they will deliver you over to be persecuted and killed…, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name.
Τότε παραδώσουσιν ὑμᾶς εἰς θλῖψιν καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν ὑμᾶς καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν διὰ μου τὸ ὄνομά Tote paradōsousin hymas eis thlipsin kai apoktenousin hymas kai esesthe misoumenoi hypo pantōn tōn ethnōn dia mou to onoma — NA/TR · 9
10
- At that time many will fall away and will betray and hate one another,
11
and many false prophets will arise and deceive many.
καὶ πολλοὶ ψευδοπροφῆται ἐγερθήσονται καὶ πλανήσουσιν πολλούς kai polloi pseudoprophētai egerthēsontai kai planēsousin pollous — NA/TR · 11
12
- Because of the multiplication of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.
Καὶ διὰ τὸ πληθυνθῆναι τὴν ἀνομίαν ἡ ἀγάπη τῶν πολλῶν ψυγήσεται Kai dia to plēthynthēnai tēn anomian hē agapē tōn pollōn psygēsetai — NA/TR · 12
13
But the [one who] perseveres to [the] end will be saved.
δὲ ὁ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος οὗτος σωθήσεται de ho hypomeinas eis telos houtos sōthēsetai — NA/TR · 13
14
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Καὶ τοῦτο τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς βασιλείας κηρυχθήσεται ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ εἰς μαρτύριον πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν καὶ τότε τὸ τέλος ἥξει Kai touto to euangelion tēs basileias kērychthēsetai en holē tē oikoumenē eis martyrion pasin tois ethnesin kai tote to telos hēxei — NA/TR · 14
The Abomination of Desolation
15
So when you see standing in [the] holy place ‘the abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by the prophet Daniel ({let} the reader understand),
οὖν Ὅταν ἴδητε ἑστὸς ἐν ἁγίῳ τόπῳ Τὸ βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ τοῦ προφήτου Δανιὴλ ὁ ἀναγινώσκων νοείτω oun Hotan idēte hestos en hagiō topō To bdelygma tēs erēmōseōs to rhēthen dia tou prophētou Daniēl ho anaginōskōn noeitō — NA/TR · 15
16
then {let} those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὄρη tote hoi en tē Ioudaia pheugetōsan eis ta orē — NA/TR · 16
17
[Let no one] on the housetop come down to retrieve anything from his house.
ὁ ἐπὶ τοῦ δώματος μὴ καταβάτω ἆραι τὰ ἐκ αὐτοῦ τῆς οἰκίας ho epi tou dōmatos mē katabatō arai ta ek autou tēs oikias — NA/TR · 17
18
And [let no one] in the field return… for his cloak.
καὶ ὁ ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ μὴ ἐπιστρεψάτω ὀπίσω ἆραι αὐτοῦ τὸ ἱμάτιον kai ho en tō agrō mē epistrepsatō opisō arai autou to himation — NA/TR · 18
19
How miserable those days [will be] for pregnant… and nursing [mothers]!
20
- Pray that your flight vvv will not occur in the winter [or] on the Sabbath.
21
For at that time there will be great tribulation, unseen… from [the] beginning of [the] world until now, [and] vvv never to be [seen again].
22
- If… those days had not been cut short,… nobody… vvv would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, those days will be cut short.
καὶ εἰ μὴ ἐκεῖναι αἱ ἡμέραι ἐκολοβώθησαν οὐκ πᾶσα σάρξ ἂν ἐσώθη δὲ διὰ τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς ἐκεῖναι αἱ ἡμέραι κολοβωθήσονται kai ei mē ekeinai hai hēmerai ekolobōthēsan ouk pasa sarx an esōthē de dia tous eklektous ekeinai hai hēmerai kolobōthēsontai — NA/TR · 22
23
At that time, if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here [is] the Christ! or ‘There [He is]! {do} not believe [it].
24
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive even the elect, if that were possible.
25
See, I have told you in advance…
The Return of the Son of Man
26
So if they tell you, ‘There He is, in the wilderness, {do} not go out, [or], ‘Here [He is,] in the inner rooms,’ {do} not believe [it].
27
For just as the lightning comes from [the] east and flashes as far as [the] west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
28
Wherever… there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
ὅπου ἐὰν ᾖ τὸ πτῶμα ἐκεῖ οἱ ἀετοί συναχθήσονται hopou ean ē to ptōma ekei hoi aetoi synachthēsontai — NA/TR · 28
29
- Immediately after the tribulation of those days: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon vvv will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
δὲ Εὐθέως μετὰ τὴν θλῖψιν ἐκείνων τῶν ἡμερῶν Ὁ ἥλιος σκοτισθήσεται Καὶ ἡ σελήνη οὐ δώσει αὐτῆς τὸ φέγγος Καὶ οἱ ἀστέρες πεσοῦνται ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ Καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται de Eutheōs meta tēn thlipsin ekeinōn tōn hēmerōn Ho hēlios skotisthēsetai Kai hē selēnē ou dōsei autēs to phengos Kai hoi asteres pesountai apo tou ouranou Kai hai dynameis tōn ouranōn saleuthēsontai — NA/TR · 29
30
vvv At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and… all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Καὶ τότε τὸ σημεῖον τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου φανήσεται ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ καὶ τότε πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ τῆς γῆς κόψονται καὶ ὄψονται τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐπὶ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ μετὰ δυνάμεως καὶ πολλῆς δόξης Kai tote to sēmeion tou Huiou tou anthrōpou phanēsetai en tō ouranō kai tote pasai hai phylai tēs gēs kopsontai kai opsontai ton Huion tou anthrōpou erchomenon epi tōn nephelōn tou ouranou meta dynameōs kai pollēs doxēs — NA/TR · 30
31
And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the [other].
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
32
Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as… its branches become tender and sprout leaves, you know that summer [is] near.
δὲ μάθετε τὴν παραβολήν Ἀπὸ τῆς συκῆς ὅταν ἤδη αὐτῆς ὁ κλάδος γένηται ἁπαλὸς καὶ ἐκφύῃ τὰ φύλλα γινώσκετε ὅτι τὸ θέρος ἐγγὺς de mathete tēn parabolēn Apo tēs sykēs hotan ēdē autēs ho klados genētai hapalos kai ekphyē ta phylla ginōskete hoti to theros engys — NA/TR · 32
33
So also, when you see all these things, you will know that He is near, right at [the] door.
34
Truly I tell you -, this generation {will} not… pass away until… all these things have happened.
ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι αὕτη ἡ γενεὰ οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ ἕως ἂν πάντα ταῦτα γένηται amēn legō hymin hoti hautē hē genea ou mē parelthē heōs an panta tauta genētai — NA/TR · 34
35
- Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words {will} never… pass away.
ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ παρελεύσεται δὲ μου οἱ λόγοι οὐ μὴ παρέλθωσιν ho ouranos kai hē gē pareleusetai de mou hoi logoi ou mē parelthōsin — NA/TR · 35
Readiness at Any Hour
36
- No one knows about that day [or] hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but… only the Father.
37
- As [it was] in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.
38
For in the days before the flood, [people] were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered… the ark.
39
And vvv they were oblivious until the flood came and swept them all away… So will it be [at] the coming of the Son of Man.
40
- Two [men] will be in the field: one will be taken and [the other] left.
τότε δύο ἔσονται ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ εἷς παραλαμβάνεται καὶ εἷς ἀφίεται tote dyo esontai en tō agrō heis paralambanetai kai heis aphietai — NA/TR · 40
41
Two [women] will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and [the other] left.
δύο ἀλήθουσαι ἐν τῷ μύλῳ μία παραλαμβάνεται καὶ μία ἀφίεται dyo alēthousai en tō mylō mia paralambanetai kai mia aphietai — NA/TR · 41
42
Therefore keep watch, because vvv you do not know [the] day on which your Lord will come.
43
But understand this: If the homeowner had known in which watch of the night the thief was coming, vvv he would have kept watch and vvv {would} not have let his house be broken into.
δὲ γινώσκετε ἐκεῖνο ὅτι εἰ ὁ οἰκοδεσπότης ᾔδει ποίᾳ φυλακῇ ὁ κλέπτης ἔρχεται ἂν ἐγρηγόρησεν καὶ ἂν οὐκ εἴασεν αὐτοῦ τὴν οἰκίαν διορυχθῆναι de ginōskete ekeino hoti ei ho oikodespotēs ēdei poia phylakē ho kleptēs erchetai an egrēgorēsen kai an ouk eiasen autou tēn oikian diorychthēnai — NA/TR · 43
44
For this reason…, you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour vvv you do not expect.
45
Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household, to give [the others] [their] food at the proper time?
46
Blessed [is] that servant whose… master finds him doing so when he returns.
47
Truly I tell you -, he will put him in charge… of all his possessions.
48
But suppose that servant [is] wicked [and] says in his heart, ‘My master will be away a long time.
49
And he begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.
50
The master of that servant will come on a day vvv vvv he does not expect and at an hour vvv vvv he does not anticipate.
51
Then he will cut him to pieces… and assign him a place with the hypocrites, [where] there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
καὶ διχοτομήσει αὐτὸν καὶ θήσει αὐτοῦ τὸ μέρος μετὰ τῶν ὑποκριτῶν ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων kai dichotomēsei auton kai thēsei autou to meros meta tōn hypokritōn ekei estai ho klauthmos kai ho brygmos tōn odontōn — NA/TR · 51
