Chapter 25
The Parable of the Ten Virgins

[“]At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps [and] went out to meet the bridegroom.
Τότε ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ὁμοιωθήσεται δέκα παρθένοις αἵτινες λαβοῦσαι ἑαυτῶν τὰς λαμπάδας ἐξῆλθον εἰς ὑπάντησιν τοῦ νυμφίου Tote hē basileia tōn ouranōn homoiōthēsetai deka parthenois haitines labousai heautōn tas lampadas exēlthon eis hypantēsin tou nymphiou — NA/TR · 1

- Five of them were foolish, and five [were] wise.
δὲ πέντε ἐξ αὐτῶν ἦσαν μωραὶ καὶ πέντε φρόνιμοι de pente ex autōn ēsan mōrai kai pente phronimoi — NA/TR · 2

- The foolish [ones] took their lamps [but did not] take along… [any extra] oil.
γὰρ αἱ μωραὶ λαβοῦσαι αὐτῶν τὰς λαμπάδας ἔλαβον μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν οὐκ ἔλαιον gar hai mōrai labousai autōn tas lampadas elabon meth’ heautōn ouk elaion — NA/TR · 3

But the wise [ones] took oil in flasks along with their lamps.
δὲ αἱ φρόνιμοι ἔλαβον ἔλαιον ἐν τοῖς ἀγγείοις μετὰ ἑαυτῶν τῶν λαμπάδων de hai phronimoi elabon elaion en tois angeiois meta heautōn tōn lampadōn — NA/TR · 4

[When] the bridegroom was delayed, vvv they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
δὲ τοῦ νυμφίου χρονίζοντος πᾶσαι ἐνύσταξαν καὶ ἐκάθευδον de tou nymphiou chronizontos pasai enystaxan kai ekatheudon — NA/TR · 5

- At midnight… the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!
δὲ Μέσης νυκτὸς κραυγὴ γέγονεν Ἰδοὺ ὁ νυμφίος ἐξέρχεσθε εἰς ἀπάντησιν αὐτοῦ de Mesēs nyktos kraugē gegonen Idou ho nymphios exerchesthe eis apantēsin autou — NA/TR · 6

Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
Τότε πᾶσαι ἐκεῖναι αἱ παρθένοι ἠγέρθησαν καὶ ἐκόσμησαν ἑαυτῶν τὰς λαμπάδας Tote pasai ekeinai hai parthenoi ēgerthēsan kai ekosmēsan heautōn tas lampadas — NA/TR · 7

- The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.
δὲ αἱ μωραὶ εἶπαν ταῖς φρονίμοις Δότε ἡμῖν ἐκ ὑμῶν τοῦ ἐλαίου ὅτι ἡμῶν αἱ λαμπάδες σβέννυνται de hai mōrai eipan tais phronimois Dote hēmin ek hymōn tou elaiou hoti hēmōn hai lampades sbennyntai — NA/TR · 8

‘No, said the wise [ones]…, ‘or vvv there may not be enough for [both] us and you. Instead, go to those who sell [oil] and buy [some] for yourselves.
οὐ δὲ Ἀπεκρίθησαν αἱ φρόνιμοι λέγουσαι Μή¦Ποτε μὴ ἀρκέσῃ ἡμῖν καὶ ὑμῖν μᾶλλον πορεύεσθε πρὸς τοὺς πωλοῦντας καὶ ἀγοράσατε ἑαυταῖς ou de Apekrithēsan hai phronimoi legousai Mē¦Pote mē arkesē hēmin kai hymin mallon poreuesthe pros tous pōlountas kai agorasate heautais — NA/TR · 9

But [while] they were on their way to buy [it], the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.
δὲ αὐτῶν Ἀπερχομένων ἀγοράσαι ὁ νυμφίος ἦλθεν καὶ αἱ ἕτοιμοι εἰσῆλθον μετ’ αὐτοῦ εἰς τοὺς γάμους καὶ ἡ θύρα ἐκλείσθη de autōn Aperchomenōn agorasai ho nymphios ēlthen kai hai hetoimoi eisēlthon met’ autou eis tous gamous kai hē thyra ekleisthē — NA/TR · 10

Later vvv the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open [the door] for us!

But he replied…, ‘Truly I tell you, vvv I do not know you.
δὲ Ὁ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐκ οἶδα ὑμᾶς de Ho apokritheis eipen Amēn legō hymin ouk oida hymas — NA/TR · 12

Therefore keep watch, because vvv you do not know the day [or] the hour.
οὖν Γρηγορεῖτε ὅτι οὐκ οἴδατε τὴν ἡμέραν οὐδὲ τὴν ὥραν oun Grēgoreite hoti ouk oidate tēn hēmeran oude tēn hōran — NA/TR · 13
The Parable of the Talents

For [it] is just like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted them with his possessions.
γὰρ Ὥσπερ ἄνθρωπος ἀποδημῶν ἐκάλεσεν ἰδίους τοὺς δούλους καὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτοῖς αὐτοῦ τὰ ὑπάρχοντα gar Hōsper anthrōpos apodēmōn ekalesen idious tous doulous kai paredōken autois autou ta hyparchonta — NA/TR · 14

- To one he gave five talents, to [another] two [talents], and to [another] one [talent]— each according to his own ability. And he went on his journey.
καὶ μὲν ᾧ ἔδωκεν πέντε τάλαντα δὲ ᾧ δύο δὲ ᾧ ἕν ἑκάστῳ κατὰ ἰδίαν τὴν δύναμιν καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν kai men hō edōken pente talanta de hō dyo de hō hen hekastō kata idian tēn dynamin kai apedēmēsen — NA/TR · 15

The [servant] who had received the five talents went at once [and] put them to work… and gained five more.
ὁ λαβὼν τὰ πέντε τάλαντα Πορευθεὶς Εὐθέως ἠργάσατο ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐκέρδησεν πέντε ἄλλα ho labōn ta pente talanta Poreutheis Eutheōs ērgasato en autois kai ekerdēsen pente alla — NA/TR · 16

Likewise, the [one with] the two [talents] gained two more.

But the [servant] who had received the one [talent] went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.
δὲ ὁ λαβὼν τὸ ἓν ἀπελθὼν ὤρυξεν γῆν καὶ ἔκρυψεν αὐτοῦ τοῦ κυρίου τὸ ἀργύριον de ho labōn to hen apelthōn ōryxen gēn kai ekrypsen autou tou kyriou to argyrion — NA/TR · 18

vvv After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.

- The [servant] who had received the five talents came [and] presented five more -. ‘Master, he said, ‘you entrusted me {with} five talents. See, I have gained five more.
καὶ ὁ λαβὼν τὰ πέντε τάλαντα προσελθὼν προσήνεγκεν πέντε ἄλλα τάλαντα Κύριε λέγων παρέδωκας μοι πέντε τάλαντά ἴδε ἐκέρδησα πέντε τάλαντα ἄλλα kai ho labōn ta pente talanta proselthōn prosēnenken pente alla talanta Kyrie legōn paredōkas moi pente talanta ide ekerdēsa pente talanta alla — NA/TR · 20

His master replied -, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you {in charge} of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!
αὐτοῦ ὁ κύριος Ἔφη αὐτῷ Εὖ ἀγαθὲ καὶ πιστέ δοῦλε ἦς πιστός ἐπὶ ὀλίγα καταστήσω σε ἐπὶ πολλῶν εἴσελθε εἰς τὴν χαρὰν τοῦ σου κυρίου autou ho kyrios Ephē autō Eu agathe kai piste doule ēs pistos epi oliga katastēsō se epi pollōn eiselthe eis tēn charan tou sou kyriou — NA/TR · 21

- The [servant] [who had received] the two talents also came [and] said, ‘Master, you entrusted me {with} two talents. See, I have gained two more.
δὲ ὁ τὰ δύο τάλαντα καὶ Προσελθὼν εἶπεν Κύριε παρέδωκας μοι δύο τάλαντά ἴδε ἐκέρδησα δύο τάλαντα ἄλλα de ho ta dyo talanta kai Proselthōn eipen Kyrie paredōkas moi dyo talanta ide ekerdēsa dyo talanta alla — NA/TR · 22

His master replied -, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you {in charge} of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!

Finally, the [servant] who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Master, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where vvv you have not sown and gathering where vvv you have not scattered seed.
δὲ ὁ εἰληφὼς τὸ ἓν τάλαντον Προσελθὼν καὶ εἶπεν Κύριε ἔγνων σε ὅτι εἶ σκληρὸς ἄνθρωπος θερίζων ὅπου οὐκ ἔσπειρας καὶ συνάγων ὅθεν οὐ διεσκόρπισας de ho eilēphōs to hen talanton Proselthōn kai eipen Kyrie egnōn se hoti ei sklēros anthrōpos therizōn hopou ouk espeiras kai synagōn hothen ou dieskorpisas — NA/TR · 24

So I was afraid and went out [and] hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what [belongs] to you.
καὶ φοβηθεὶς ἀπελθὼν ἔκρυψα σου τὸ τάλαντόν ἐν τῇ γῇ ἴδε ἔχεις τὸ σόν kai phobētheis apelthōn ekrypsa sou to talanton en tē gē ide echeis to son — NA/TR · 25

‘You wicked, lazy servant! replied… his master. ‘You knew that I reap where vvv I have not sown and gather where… I have not scattered seed.
Πονηρὲ καὶ ὀκνηρέ δοῦλε δὲ Ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτῷ αὐτοῦ ὁ κύριος ᾔδεις ὅτι θερίζω ὅπου οὐκ ἔσπειρα καὶ συνάγω ὅθεν οὐ διεσκόρπισα Ponēre kai oknēre doule de Apokritheis eipen autō autou ho kyrios ēdeis hoti therizō hopou ouk espeira kai synagō hothen ou dieskorpisa — NA/TR · 26

Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and vvv on my return vvv I would have received it {back} with interest.
οὖν σε ἔδει βαλεῖν μου τὰ ἀργύριά τοῖς τραπεζίταις καὶ ἐγὼ ἐλθὼν ἂν ἐκομισάμην τὸ ἐμὸν σὺν τόκῳ oun se edei balein mou ta argyria tois trapezitais kai egō elthōn an ekomisamēn to emon syn tokō — NA/TR · 27

Therefore take the talent from him and give [it] to the [one] who has ten talents.
οὖν Ἄρατε τὸ τάλαντον ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ δότε τῷ ἔχοντι τὰ δέκα τάλαντα oun Arate to talanton ap’ autou kai dote tō echonti ta deka talanta — NA/TR · 28

For everyone who has will be given [more], and [he] will have an abundance. But the [one who] {does} not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
γὰρ τῷ παντὶ ἔχοντι δοθήσεται καὶ περισσευθήσεται δὲ τοῦ μὴ ἔχοντος καὶ ὃ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ gar tō panti echonti dothēsetai kai perisseuthēsetai de tou mē echontos kai ho echei arthēsetai ap’ autou — NA/TR · 29

And throw that worthless servant into the outer darkness, [where] there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
καὶ ἐκβάλετε τὸν ἀχρεῖον δοῦλον εἰς τὸ τὸ ἐξώτερον σκότος ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων kai ekbalete ton achreion doulon eis to to exōteron skotos ekei estai ho klauthmos kai ho brygmos tōn odontōn — NA/TR · 30
The Sheep and the Goats

- When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit on His glorious throne.
δὲ Ὅταν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔλθῃ ἐν αὐτοῦ τῇ δόξῃ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄγγελοι μετ’ αὐτοῦ τότε καθίσει ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ δόξης θρόνου de Hotan ho huios tou anthrōpou elthē en autou tē doxē kai pantes hoi angeloi met’ autou tote kathisei epi autou doxēs thronou — NA/TR · 31

- All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate [the people] vvv one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
καὶ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη συναχθήσονται ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀφορίσει αὐτοὺς ἀπ’ ἀλλήλων ὥσπερ ὁ ποιμὴν ἀφορίζει τὰ πρόβατα ἀπὸ τῶν ἐρίφων kai panta ta ethnē synachthēsontai emprosthen autou kai aphorisei autous ap’ allēlōn hōsper ho poimēn aphorizei ta probata apo tōn eriphōn — NA/TR · 32

- He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on [His] left.
καὶ μὲν στήσει τὰ πρόβατα ἐκ αὐτοῦ δεξιῶν δὲ τὰ ἐρίφια ἐξ εὐωνύμων kai men stēsei ta probata ek autou dexiōn de ta eriphia ex euōnymōn — NA/TR · 33

Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from [the] foundation of [the] world.
Τότε ὁ Βασιλεὺς ἐρεῖ τοῖς ἐκ αὐτοῦ δεξιῶν Δεῦτε οἱ εὐλογημένοι τοῦ μου Πατρός κληρονομήσατε τὴν βασιλείαν ἡτοιμασμένην ὑμῖν ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου Tote ho Basileus erei tois ek autou dexiōn Deute hoi eulogēmenoi tou mou Patros klēronomēsate tēn basileian hētoimasmenēn hymin apo katabolēs kosmou — NA/TR · 34

For I was hungry and you gave Me [something] to eat, I was thirsty and vvv you gave Me [something] to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in…,
γὰρ ἐπείνασα καὶ ἐδώκατέ μοι φαγεῖν ἐδίψησα καὶ με ἐποτίσατέ ἤμην ξένος καὶ συνηγάγετέ με gar epeinasa kai edōkate moi phagein edipsēsa kai me epotisate ēmēn xenos kai synēgagete me — NA/TR · 35

[I was] naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited… Me.
γυμνὸς καὶ περιεβάλετέ με ἠσθένησα καὶ ἐπεσκέψασθέ με ἤμην ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ ἤλθατε πρός με gymnos kai periebalete me ēsthenēsa kai epeskepsasthe me ēmēn en phylakē kai ēlthate pros me — NA/TR · 36

Then the righteous will answer Him -, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed [You], or thirsty and give [You] something to drink?
Τότε οἱ δίκαιοι ἀποκριθήσονται αὐτῷ λέγοντες Κύριε πότε εἴδομεν σε πεινῶντα καὶ ἐθρέψαμεν ἢ διψῶντα καὶ ἐποτίσαμεν Tote hoi dikaioi apokrithēsontai autō legontes Kyrie pote eidomen se peinōnta kai ethrepsamen ē dipsōnta kai epotisamen — NA/TR · 37

- When did we see You a stranger and take [You] in, or naked and clothe [You]?

- When did we see You sick or in prison and visit… You?
δέ πότε εἴδομεν σε ἀσθενοῦντα ἢ ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ ἤλθομεν πρός σε de pote eidomen se asthenounta ē en phylakē kai ēlthomen pros se — NA/TR · 39

And the King vvv will reply…, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever… you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.
Καὶ ὁ Βασιλεὺς ἀποκριθεὶς ἐρεῖ αὐτοῖς Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐφ’ ὅσον ἐποιήσατε ἑνὶ τῶν ἐλαχίστων τούτων τῶν ἀδελφῶν μου ἐποιήσατε ἐμοὶ Kai ho Basileus apokritheis erei autois Amēn legō hymin eph’ hoson epoiēsate heni tōn elachistōn toutōn tōn adelphōn mou epoiēsate emoi — NA/TR · 40

Then He will say to those on [His] left, ‘Depart from Me, [you] who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
Τότε καὶ ἐρεῖ τοῖς ἐξ εὐωνύμων Πορεύεσθε ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ οἱ κατηραμένοι εἰς τὸ τὸ αἰώνιον πῦρ τὸ ἡτοιμασμένον τῷ διαβόλῳ καὶ αὐτοῦ τοῖς ἀγγέλοις Tote kai erei tois ex euōnymōn Poreuesthe ap’ emou hoi katēramenoi eis to to aiōnion pyr to hētoimasmenon tō diabolō kai autou tois angelois — NA/TR · 41

For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink…,
γὰρ ἐπείνασα καὶ ἐδώκατέ μοι οὐκ φαγεῖν καὶ ἐδίψησα καὶ ἐποτίσατέ οὐκ με gar epeinasa kai edōkate moi ouk phagein kai edipsēsa kai epotisate ouk me — NA/TR · 42

I was a stranger and vvv you did not take Me in…, [I was] naked and vvv you did not clothe Me, [I was] sick and in prison and vvv you did not look after Me.
ἤμην ξένος καὶ οὐ συνηγάγετέ με γυμνὸς καὶ οὐ περιεβάλετέ με ἀσθενὴς καὶ ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ οὐκ ἐπεσκέψασθέ με ēmēn xenos kai ou synēgagete me gymnos kai ou periebalete me asthenēs kai en phylakē kai ouk epeskepsasthe me — NA/TR · 43

And they too will reply -, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and vvv did not minister to You?
Τότε αὐτοὶ καὶ ἀποκριθήσονται λέγοντες Κύριε πότε εἴδομεν σε πεινῶντα ἢ διψῶντα ἢ ξένον ἢ γυμνὸν ἢ ἀσθενῆ ἢ ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ οὐ διηκονήσαμέν σοι Tote autoi kai apokrithēsontai legontes Kyrie pote eidomen se peinōnta ē dipsōnta ē xenon ē gymnon ē asthenē ē en phylakē kai ou diēkonēsamen soi — NA/TR · 44

Then [the King] will answer… -, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever… vvv you did not do for one of the least of these, vvv you did not do for Me.

And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
