Jesus Delivered to Pilate
1
When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people vvv conspired against Jesus to put Him to death…
δὲ Πρωΐας γενομένης πάντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τοῦ λαοῦ ἔλαβον συμβούλιον κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὥστε θανατῶσαι αὐτόν de Prōias genomenēs pantes hoi archiereis kai hoi presbyteroi tou laou elabon symboulion kata tou Iēsou hōste thanatōsai auton — NA/TR · 1

- They bound Him, led [Him] away, and handed [Him] over to Pilate the governor.

Judas Hangs Himself

When Judas, who had betrayed Him…, saw that [Jesus] was condemned, he was filled with remorse [and] returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.

“I have sinned by betraying innocent blood, he said. “What [is that] to us? - they replied. “You bear the responsibility.

So [Judas] threw the silver into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

- The chief priests picked up the pieces of silver [and] said, “vvv It is unlawful to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.
δὲ Οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς λαβόντες τὰ ἀργύρια εἶπαν Οὐκ ἔξεστιν βαλεῖν αὐτὰ εἰς τὸν κορβανᾶν ἐπεὶ ἐστιν αἵματός τιμὴ de Hoi archiereis labontes ta argyria eipan Ouk exestin balein auta eis ton korbanan epei estin haimatos timē — NA/TR · 6

[After] conferring together…, [they used] [the money] to buy the vvv potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.
δὲ λαβόντες συμβούλιον ἐξ αὐτῶν ἠγόρασαν τὸν τοῦ κεραμέως ἀγρὸν εἰς ταφὴν τοῖς ξένοις de labontes symboulion ex autōn ēgorasan ton tou kerameōs agron eis taphēn tois xenois — NA/TR · 7

That is why - [it] has been called the Field of Blood to this day.

Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled -: “- They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on Him… by [the] people of Israel,

and they gave them for the vvv potter’s field, as [the] Lord had commanded me.”

Jesus before Pilate

Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, who questioned Him -: “Are You the King of the Jews? “You have said [so], - Jesus replied.
δὲ Ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐστάθη ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ ἡγεμόνος καὶ ὁ ἡγεμὼν ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν λέγων εἶ Σὺ ὁ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων Σὺ λέγεις δὲ Ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἔφη de Ho Iēsous estathē emprosthen tou hēgemonos kai ho hēgemōn epērōtēsen auton legōn ei Sy ho Basileus tōn Ioudaiōn Sy legeis de Ho Iēsous ephē — NA/TR · 11

And vvv vvv vvv when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer…
Καὶ ἐν τῷ αὐτὸν κατηγορεῖσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων ἀπεκρίνατο οὐδὲν Kai en tō auton katēgoreisthai hypo tōn archiereōn kai presbyterōn apekrinato ouden — NA/TR · 12

Then Pilate asked Him, “vvv Do You not hear how many charges they are bringing against You?

But vvv [Jesus] gave no answer…, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

Now [it was] the governor’s custom at [the] feast to release to the crowd a prisoner of their choosing.
δὲ ὁ ἡγεμὼν εἰώθει Κατὰ ἑορτὴν ἀπολύειν τῷ ὄχλῳ ἕνα δέσμιον ὃν ἤθελον de ho hēgemōn eiōthei Kata heortēn apolyein tō ochlō hena desmion hon ēthelon — NA/TR · 15

- At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.
δὲ τότε εἶχον ἐπίσημον δέσμιον λεγόμενον Βαραββᾶν de tote eichon episēmon desmion legomenon Barabban — NA/TR · 16

So vvv when [the crowd] had assembled, Pilate asked them, “Which [one] do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?

For he knew [it was] out of envy [that] they had handed [Jesus] over to him.

[While] vvv [Pilate] was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Have nothing to do with… that innocent [man], for I have suffered terribly in a dream today because of Him.
δὲ αὐτοῦ Καθημένου ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος αὐτοῦ ἡ γυνὴ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσα Μηδὲν σοὶ καὶ ἐκείνῳ τῷ δικαίῳ γὰρ ἔπαθον πολλὰ κατ’ ὄναρ σήμερον δι’ αὐτόν de autou Kathēmenou epi tou bēmatos autou hē gynē apesteilen pros auton legousa Mēden soi kai ekeinō tō dikaiō gar epathon polla kat’ onar sēmeron di’ auton — NA/TR · 19

But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death…
δὲ Οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ἔπεισαν τοὺς ὄχλους ἵνα αἰτήσωνται τὸν Βαραββᾶν δὲ ἀπολέσωσιν τὸν Ἰησοῦν de Hoi archiereis kai hoi presbyteroi epeisan tous ochlous hina aitēsōntai ton Barabban de apolesōsin ton Iēsoun — NA/TR · 20

“Which of the two do you want me to release to you? asked the governor -. “- Barabbas, - they replied.

“What then should I do with Jesus who is called Christ? Pilate asked -. vvv They all answered, “Crucify Him!

“Why? - asked [Pilate]. “What evil has He done? But they shouted all the louder -, “Crucify Him!

Pilate Washes His Hands

When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but that instead a riot was breaking out, he took water [and] washed [his] hands before the crowd. “I am innocent of this [man’s] blood, he said. “You bear the responsibility.”
δὲ ὁ Πιλᾶτος Ἰδὼν ὅτι ὠφελεῖ οὐδὲν ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον θόρυβος γίνεται λαβὼν ὕδωρ ἀπενίψατο τὰς χεῖρας ἀπέναντι τοῦ ὄχλου εἰμι Ἀθῷός ἀπὸ τούτου τοῦ αἵματος λέγων ὑμεῖς ὄψεσθε de ho Pilatos Idōn hoti ōphelei ouden alla mallon thorybos ginetai labōn hydōr apenipsato tas cheiras apenanti tou ochlou eimi Athōos apo toutou tou haimatos legōn hymeis opsesthe — NA/TR · 24

- All the people answered -, “His blood [be] on us and on our children!

[So] [Pilate] released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged…, [and] handed Him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium [and] gathered the whole company around Him.
Τότε οἱ τοῦ ἡγεμόνος στρατιῶται παραλαβόντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον συνήγαγον τὴν ὅλην σπεῖραν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν Tote hoi tou hēgemonos stratiōtai paralabontes ton Iēsoun eis to praitōrion synēgagon tēn holēn speiran ep’ auton — NA/TR · 27

- They stripped Him [and] put a scarlet robe on Him.
καὶ ἐκδύσαντες αὐτὸν περιέθηκαν κοκκίνην χλαμύδα αὐτῷ kai ekdysantes auton periethēkan kokkinēn chlamyda autō — NA/TR · 28

And they twisted together a crown of thorns [and] set [it] on His head. [They put] a staff in His right hand, knelt down before Him, [and] mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!
καὶ πλέξαντες στέφανον ἐξ ἀκανθῶν ἐπέθηκαν ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τῆς κεφαλῆς καὶ κάλαμον ἐν αὐτοῦ τῇ δεξιᾷ καὶ γονυπετήσαντες ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες Χαῖρε Βασιλεῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων kai plexantes stephanon ex akanthōn epethēkan epi autou tēs kephalēs kai kalamon en autou tē dexia kai gonypetēsantes emprosthen autou enepaixan autō legontes Chaire Basileu tōn Ioudaiōn — NA/TR · 29

Then they spit on Him [and] took the staff and struck Him on the head {repeatedly}.
καὶ ἐμπτύσαντες εἰς αὐτὸν ἔλαβον τὸν κάλαμον καὶ ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν κεφαλὴν kai emptysantes eis auton elabon ton kalamon kai etypton autou eis tēn kephalēn — NA/TR · 30

After… they had mocked Him, they removed the robe and put His [own] clothes [back] on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify [Him].

The Crucifixion

Along the way… they found a man from Cyrene, named Simon, [and] they forced him to carry the cross of [Jesus].
δὲ Ἐξερχόμενοι εὗρον ἄνθρωπον Κυρηναῖον ὀνόματι Σίμωνα ἠγγάρευσαν τοῦτον ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ de Exerchomenoi heuron anthrōpon Kyrēnaion onomati Simōna ēngareusan touton hina arē ton stauron autou — NA/TR · 32

And [when] they came to a place called Golgotha, which means… The Place of the Skull,

they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting [it], He refused… to drink [it].

When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots.

And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.

Above His head they posted the written charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

- Two robbers were crucified with Him, one on [His] right and [the other] on [His] left.

And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads

and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild [it] in three days, save Yourself! If You are [the] Son of God, come down from the cross!
καὶ λέγοντες Ὁ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ οἰκοδομῶν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις σῶσον σεαυτόν εἰ εἶ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ κατάβηθι ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ kai legontes Ho katalyōn ton naon kai oikodomōn en trisin hēmerais sōson seauton ei ei Huios tou Theou kai katabēthi apo tou staurou — NA/TR · 40

In the same way -, the chief priests, - scribes, and elders mocked Him, saying,
Ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων ἐμπαίζοντες ἔλεγον Homoiōs kai hoi archiereis meta tōn grammateōn kai presbyterōn empaizontes elegon — NA/TR · 41

“He saved others, vvv [but] He cannot save Himself. He is [the] King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him.

He trusts in God. Let [God] deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said, ‘I am [the] Son of God.

vvv vvv In the same way, even the robbers who were crucified with Him berated Him.

The Death of Jesus

- From [the] sixth hour until [the] ninth hour darkness came over all the land.

- About the ninth hour Jesus cried out vvv in a loud voice -, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? which means, “My God, My God, why… have You forsaken Me?”

When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “[He] is calling Elijah.

- One of them quickly ran and brought a sponge. He filled [it] with sour wine, put [it] on a reed, and held it up for [Jesus] to drink…
καὶ εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν εὐθέως δραμὼν καὶ λαβὼν σπόγγον τε πλήσας ὄξους καὶ περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν kai heis ex autōn eutheōs dramōn kai labōn spongon te plēsas oxous kai peritheis kalamō epotizen auton — NA/TR · 48

But the others said, “Leave [Him] alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.”

When Jesus had cried out again vvv in a loud voice, He yielded up [His] spirit.

At that moment… the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, and the rocks were split.

- The tombs broke open, and [the] bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.

- After [Jesus’] resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered… the holy city and appeared to many [people].

When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself… was a disciple of Jesus.
