Chapter 6
Giving to the Needy
1
[“]Be careful - not to perform your righteous acts before men vvv vvv to be seen by them. If [you do]…, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
Προσέχετε δὲ τὴν μὴ ποιεῖν ὑμῶν δικαιοσύνην ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων πρὸς τὸ θεαθῆναι αὐτοῖς εἰ δὲ μή¦γε ἔχετε οὐκ μισθὸν παρὰ τῷ ὑμῶν Πατρὶ τῷ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς Prosechete de tēn mē poiein hymōn dikaiosynēn emprosthen tōn anthrōpōn pros to theathēnai autois ei de mē¦ge echete ouk misthon para tō hymōn Patri tō en tois ouranois — NA/TR · 1

So when you give to the needy…, do not sound a trumpet… before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
οὖν Ὅταν ποιῇς ἐλεημοσύνην σαλπίσῃς μὴ ἔμπροσθέν σου ὥσπερ οἱ ὑποκριταὶ ποιοῦσιν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ ἐν ταῖς ῥύμαις ὅπως δοξασθῶσιν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν αὐτῶν μισθὸν oun Hotan poiēs eleēmosynēn salpisēs mē emprosthen sou hōsper hoi hypokritai poiousin en tais synagōgais kai en tais rhymais hopōs doxasthōsin hypo tōn anthrōpōn amēn legō hymin apechousin ton autōn misthon — NA/TR · 2

But [when] you give to the needy…, {do} not {let} your left [hand] know what your right hand is doing,
δὲ σοῦ ποιοῦντος ἐλεημοσύνην μὴ ἡ σου ἀριστερά γνώτω τί ἡ σου δεξιά ποιεῖ de sou poiountos eleēmosynēn mē hē sou aristera gnōtō ti hē sou dexia poiei — NA/TR · 3

so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father -, who sees vvv what is done in secret, will reward you.

The Lord’s Prayer

And when you pray, do not be… like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners vvv to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.

But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, [and] pray to your Father, who [is] vvv vvv unseen. And your Father, who sees vvv what is done in secret, will reward you.

And [when] you pray, do not babble on… like pagans, for they think that by their many words they will be heard.
δὲ Προσευχόμενοι βατταλογήσητε μὴ ὥσπερ οἱ ἐθνικοί γὰρ δοκοῦσιν ὅτι ἐν τῇ αὐτῶν πολυλογίᾳ εἰσακουσθήσονται de Proseuchomenoi battalogēsēte mē hōsper hoi ethnikoi gar dokousin hoti en tē autōn polylogia eisakousthēsontai — NA/TR · 7

- [Do] not be like them, for vvv your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

- Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as [it is] in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Καὶ ἄφες ἡμῖν τὰ ἡμῶν ὀφειλήματα Ὡς ἡμεῖς καὶ ἀφήκαμεν τοῖς ἡμῶν ὀφειλέταις Kai aphes hēmin ta hēmōn opheilēmata Hōs hēmeis kai aphēkamen tois hēmōn opheiletais — NA/TR · 12

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil [one].
Καὶ εἰσενέγκῃς ἡμᾶς μὴ εἰς πειρασμόν Ἀλλὰ ῥῦσαι ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ Kai eisenenkēs hēmas mē eis peirasmon Alla rhysai hēmas apo tou ponērou — NA/TR · 13

For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive… you.
γὰρ Ἐὰν ἀφῆτε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τὰ αὐτῶν παραπτώματα ὁ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος Πατὴρ ἀφήσει καὶ ὑμῖν gar Ean aphēte tois anthrōpois ta autōn paraptōmata ho hymōn ho ouranios Patēr aphēsei kai hymin — NA/TR · 14

But if you do not forgive… men their trespasses, neither {will} your Father forgive yours…

Proper Fasting

- When you fast, [do] not be somber like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces vvv to show men they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
δὲ Ὅταν νηστεύητε μὴ γίνεσθε σκυθρωποί ὡς οἱ ὑποκριταὶ γὰρ ἀφανίζουσιν τὰ αὐτῶν πρόσωπα ὅπως φανῶσιν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις νηστεύοντες ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν αὐτῶν μισθὸν de Hotan nēsteuēte mē ginesthe skythrōpoi hōs hoi hypokritai gar aphanizousin ta autōn prosōpa hopōs phanōsin tois anthrōpois nēsteuontes amēn legō hymin apechousin ton autōn misthon — NA/TR · 16

But [when] you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
δὲ σὺ νηστεύων ἄλειψαί σου τὴν κεφαλὴν καὶ νίψαι τὸ σου πρόσωπόν de sy nēsteuōn aleipsai sou tēn kephalēn kai nipsai to sou prosōpon — NA/TR · 17

so that [your] fasting will not be obvious… to men, but only to your Father, who [is] vvv vvv unseen. And your Father, who sees vvv what is done in secret, will reward you.

Treasures in Heaven

[Do] not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth [and] rust vvv do not destroy, and… where thieves do not break in… [and] steal.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The Lamp of the Body

The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light.
ὁ ὀφθαλμός ἐστιν Ὁ λύχνος τοῦ σώματός οὖν ἐὰν ὁ σου ὀφθαλμός ᾖ ἁπλοῦς τὸ σου ὅλον σῶμά ἔσται φωτεινὸν ho ophthalmos estin Ho lychnos tou sōmatos oun ean ho sou ophthalmos ē haplous to sou holon sōma estai phōteinon — NA/TR · 22

But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great [is] that darkness!
δὲ ἐὰν ὁ σου ὀφθαλμός ᾖ πονηρὸς σου ὅλον τὸ σῶμά ἔσται σκοτεινὸν εἰ οὖν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἐν σοὶ ἐστίν σκότος πόσον τὸ σκότος de ean ho sou ophthalmos ē ponēros sou holon to sōma estai skoteinon ei oun to phōs to en soi estin skotos poson to skotos — NA/TR · 23

No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to [the] one and despise the other. You cannot… serve [both] God and money.

Do Not Worry

Therefore… I tell you, [do] not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or [about] your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body [more] than clothes?
Διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ὑμῶν ψυχῇ τί φάγητε ἢ τί πίητε μηδὲ τῷ ὑμῶν σώματι τί ἐνδύσησθε ἐστιν οὐχὶ ἡ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν τῆς τροφῆς καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος Dia touto legō hymin mē merimnate tē hymōn psychē ti phagēte ē ti piēte mēde tō hymōn sōmati ti endysēsthe estin ouchi hē psychē pleion tēs trophēs kai to sōma tou endymatos — NA/TR · 25

Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow… [or] reap [or] gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. {Are} you not much more valuable than they?

- Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
δὲ τίς ὑμῶν ἐξ μεριμνῶν δύναται προσθεῖναι ἕνα πῆχυν ἐπὶ τὴν αὐτοῦ ἡλικίαν de tis hymōn ex merimnōn dynatai prostheinai hena pēchyn epi tēn autou hēlikian — NA/TR · 27

And why do you worry about clothes? Consider how the lilies of the field grow: [They do] not labor [or] spin.

Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these.

- If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is [here] today and tomorrow [is] thrown into the furnace, [will He] not much more [clothe] you, O [you] of little faith?

Therefore [do] not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat? or ‘What shall we drink? or ‘What shall we wear?

For the Gentiles strive after all these things, [and] your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.

Therefore [do] not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. vvv Today [has] enough trouble of its own.
