Chapter 1
The Mission of John the Baptist

[This is the] beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, [the] Son of God.

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You…, who will prepare Your way.”

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for [the] Lord, make straight paths for Him.’”

John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching [a] baptism of repentance for [the] forgiveness of sins.

- [People] went out to him… from all of Jerusalem and the countryside of Judea. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

- John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.

And he proclaimed…: “After me will come One more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down [and] untie.

I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with [the] Holy Spirit.

- In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις Ἰησοῦς ἦλθεν ἀπὸ Ναζαρὲτ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἐβαπτίσθη ὑπὸ Ἰωάννου εἰς τὸν Ἰορδάνην Kai egeneto en ekeinais tais hēmerais Iēsous ēlthen apo Nazaret tēs Galilaias kai ebaptisthē hypo Iōannou eis ton Iordanēn — NA/TR · 9

vvv As soon [as Jesus] came up out of the water, He saw the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.
καὶ εὐθὺς ἀναβαίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος εἶδεν τοὺς οὐρανοὺς σχιζομένους καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον εἰς αὐτόν ὡς περιστερὰν kai euthys anabainōn ek tou hydatos eiden tous ouranous schizomenous kai to Pneuma katabainon eis auton hōs peristeran — NA/TR · 10

And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.

The Temptation and Preaching of Jesus

- At once the Spirit drove [Jesus]… into the wilderness,

and He was vvv vvv [there] for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.

- “The time is fulfilled, He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!

The First Disciples

As [Jesus] was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and [his] brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
Καὶ παράγων παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶδεν Σίμωνα καὶ τὸν Σίμωνος ἀδελφὸν Ἀνδρέαν ἀμφιβάλλοντας ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ γὰρ ἦσαν ἁλιεῖς Kai paragōn para tēn thalassan tēs Galilaias eiden Simōna kai ton Simōnos adelphon Andrean amphiballontas en tē thalassē gar ēsan halieis — NA/TR · 16

“Come, follow… Me, - Jesus said…, “and I will make you fishers of men.

And at once they left [their] nets [and] followed Him.

- Going on a little [farther], He saw James [son] of Zebedee and his brother John. They [were] in a boat, mending [their] nets.
Καὶ προβὰς ὀλίγον εἶδεν Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ αὐτοῦ τὸν ἀδελφὸν Ἰωάννην καὶ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ καταρτίζοντας τὰ δίκτυα Kai probas oligon eiden Iakōbon ton tou Zebedaiou kai autou ton adelphon Iōannēn kai autous en tō ploiō katartizontas ta diktya — NA/TR · 19

- Immediately [Jesus] called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men [and] followed… Him.

Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit

Then [Jesus and His companions] went to Capernaum, and right away [Jesus] entered… the synagogue on the Sabbath [and] began to teach.
Καὶ εἰσπορεύονται εἰς Καφαρναούμ καὶ εὐθὺς εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν τοῖς σάββασιν ἐδίδασκεν Kai eisporeuontai eis Kapharnaoum kai euthys eiselthōn eis tēn synagōgēn tois sabbasin edidasken — NA/TR · 21

- [The people] were astonished at His teaching, because vvv He taught as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
καὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τῇ διδαχῇ γὰρ ἦν διδάσκων αὐτοὺς ὡς ἔχων ἐξουσίαν καὶ οὐχ ὡς οἱ γραμματεῖς kai exeplēssonto epi autou tē didachē gar ēn didaskōn autous hōs echōn exousian kai ouch hōs hoi grammateis — NA/TR · 22

- Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out in the synagogue:
Καὶ εὐθὺς ἦν ἄνθρωπος ἐν ἀκαθάρτῳ πνεύματι καὶ ἀνέκραξεν ἐν αὐτῶν τῇ συναγωγῇ Kai euthys ēn anthrōpos en akathartō pneumati kai anekraxen en autōn tē synagōgē — NA/TR · 23

- “What do You [ want ] with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are— the Holy [One] of God!
λέγων Τί σοί καὶ ἡμῖν Ἰησοῦ Ναζαρηνέ ἦλθες ἀπολέσαι ἡμᾶς οἶδά τίς σε εἶ ὁ Ἅγιος τοῦ Θεοῦ legōn Ti soi kai hēmin Iēsou Nazarēne ēlthes apolesai hēmas oida tis se ei ho Hagios tou Theou — NA/TR · 24

But Jesus rebuked [the spirit]. “Be silent! He said. “- Come out of him!

At this, the unclean spirit threw [the man] into convulsions… [and] came out - vvv with a loud shriek…
καὶ τὸ τὸ ἀκάθαρτον πνεῦμα σπαράξαν αὐτὸν ἐξῆλθεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ καὶ φωνῆσαν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ kai to to akatharton pneuma sparaxan auton exēlthen ex autou kai phōnēsan phōnē megalē — NA/TR · 26

- All [the people] were amazed [and] began to ask vvv one another -, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him!
Καὶ ἅπαντες ἐθαμβήθησαν ὥστε συζητεῖν πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντας Τί ἐστιν τοῦτο καινή διδαχὴ κατ’ ἐξουσίαν ἐπιτάσσει καὶ τοῖς τοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις πνεύμασι καὶ ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ Kai hapantes ethambēthēsan hōste syzētein pros heautous legontas Ti estin touto kainē didachē kat’ exousian epitassei kai tois tois akathartois pneumasi kai hypakouousin autō — NA/TR · 27

And the news about [Jesus] spread quickly through… the whole region of Galilee.
καὶ ἡ ἀκοὴ αὐτοῦ ἐξῆλθεν εὐθὺς πανταχοῦ εἰς τὴν ὅλην περίχωρον τῆς Γαλιλαίας kai hē akoē autou exēlthen euthys pantachou eis tēn holēn perichōron tēs Galilaias — NA/TR · 28
Jesus Heals at Peter’s House

As soon as… [Jesus and His companions] had left… the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐξελθόντες ἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς ἦλθον μετὰ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωάννου εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος καὶ Ἀνδρέου Kai euthys exelthontes ek tēs synagōgēs ēlthon meta Iakōbou kai Iōannou eis tēn oikian Simōnos kai Andreou — NA/TR · 29

- Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, and they promptly told… [Jesus] about her.

So He went to [her], took her [by the] hand, and helped her up… The fever left her, and she began to serve them.

- That evening…, after sunset…, [people] brought to [Jesus] all the vvv sick and demon-possessed,
δὲ Ὀψίας γενομένης ὅτε ὁ ἥλιος ἔδυ ἔφερον πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντας τοὺς ἔχοντας κακῶς καὶ τοὺς δαιμονιζομένους de Opsias genomenēs hote ho hēlios edy epheron pros auton pantas tous echontas kakōs kai tous daimonizomenous — NA/TR · 32

and the whole town vvv gathered at the door.

And He healed many who were ill with various diseases and drove out many demons. But vvv He would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.
καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν πολλοὺς ἔχοντας κακῶς ποικίλαις νόσοις καὶ ἐξέβαλεν πολλὰ δαιμόνια καὶ οὐκ ἤφιεν τὰ δαιμόνια λαλεῖν ὅτι ᾔδεισαν αὐτόν kai etherapeusen pollous echontas kakōs poikilais nosois kai exebalen polla daimonia kai ouk ēphien ta daimonia lalein hoti ēdeisan auton — NA/TR · 34
Jesus Prays and Preaches

Early in the morning, while it was still dark, [Jesus] got up [and] went out… to a solitary place… to pray.
πρωῒ λίαν ἔννυχα Καὶ ἀναστὰς ἐξῆλθεν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κἀκεῖ προσηύχετο prōi lian ennycha Kai anastas exēlthen kai apēlthen eis erēmon topon kakei prosēucheto — NA/TR · 35

- Simon and his companions… went to look for Him,
καὶ Σίμων καὶ οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ κατεδίωξεν αὐτὸν kai Simōn kai hoi met’ autou katediōxen auton — NA/TR · 36

and when they found Him, they said…, “Everyone is looking for You!
καὶ εὗρον αὐτὸν καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ ὅτι Πάντες ζητοῦσίν σε kai heuron auton kai legousin autō hoti Pantes zētousin se — NA/TR · 37

But [Jesus] answered…, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach there as well, for that is why… I have come.
Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἄγωμεν ἀλλαχοῦ εἰς τὰς ἐχομένας κωμοπόλεις ἵνα κηρύξω ἐκεῖ καὶ γὰρ εἰς τοῦτο ἐξῆλθον Kai legei autois Agōmen allachou eis tas echomenas kōmopoleis hina kēryxō ekei kai gar eis touto exēlthon — NA/TR · 38

[So] He went throughout… Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς ὅλην τὴν Γαλιλαίαν κηρύσσων εἰς αὐτῶν τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ ἐκβάλλων τὰ δαιμόνια kai ēlthen eis holēn tēn Galilaian kēryssōn eis autōn tas synagōgas kai ekballōn ta daimonia — NA/TR · 39
The Leper’s Prayer

Then a leper came to [Jesus], begging vvv on his knees - -: “If You are willing, You can make me clean…
Καὶ λεπρὸς ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν παρακαλῶν αὐτὸν καὶ γονυπετῶν ὅτι καὶ λέγων αὐτῷ Ἐὰν θέλῃς δύνασαί καθαρίσαι με Kai lepros erchetai pros auton parakalōn auton kai gonypetōn hoti kai legōn autō Ean thelēs dynasai katharisai me — NA/TR · 40

- Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand [and] touched [the man]. “I am willing, He said -. “Be clean!
Καὶ σπλαγχνισθεὶς ἐκτείνας αὐτοῦ τὴν χεῖρα ἥψατο Θέλω καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ καθαρίσθητι Kai splanchnistheis ekteinas autou tēn cheira hēpsato Thelō kai legei autō katharisthēti — NA/TR · 41

And immediately the leprosy left… him, and [the man] was cleansed.

- vvv [Jesus] promptly sent him away… with a stern warning…:

- “See that you don’t tell… [anyone]. But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὅρα εἴπῃς μηδενὶ μηδὲν ἀλλὰ ὕπαγε δεῖξον σεαυτὸν τῷ ἱερεῖ καὶ προσένεγκε ἃ Μωϋσῆς προσέταξεν περὶ σου τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς kai legei autō Hora eipēs mēdeni mēden alla hypage deixon seauton tō hierei kai prosenenke ha Mōusēs prosetaxen peri sou tou katharismou eis martyrion autois — NA/TR · 44

But the [man] went out [and] openly began to proclaim and spread the news. Consequently, Jesus could no longer… enter… a town in plain view, but He stayed out in solitary places. Yet [people] came to Him from every quarter.
δὲ Ὁ ἐξελθὼν πολλὰ ἤρξατο κηρύσσειν καὶ διαφημίζειν τὸν λόγον ὥστε αὐτὸν μηκέτι δύνασθαι εἰσελθεῖν εἰς πόλιν φανερῶς ἀλλ’ ἦν ἔξω ἐπ’ ἐρήμοις τόποις καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντοθεν de Ho exelthōn polla ērxato kēryssein kai diaphēmizein ton logon hōste auton mēketi dynasthai eiselthein eis polin phanerōs all’ ēn exō ep’ erēmois topois kai ērchonto pros auton pantothen — NA/TR · 45
