Chapter 11
The Triumphal Entry

- As they approached… Jerusalem [and came] to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, [Jesus] sent out two of His disciples
Καὶ ὅτε ἐγγίζουσιν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα εἰς Βηθφαγὴ καὶ Βηθανίαν πρὸς τὸ ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν ἀποστέλλει δύο τῶν αὐτοῦ μαθητῶν Kai hote engizousin eis Hierosolyma eis Bēthphagē kai Bēthanian pros to oros tōn Elaiōn apostellei dyo tōn autou mathētōn — NA/TR · 1

and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as soon as you enter… it, you will find a colt tied [there], on which no one… vvv has ever sat. Untie it and bring [it here].
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν κώμην τὴν κατέναντι ὑμῶν καὶ εὐθὺς εἰσπορευόμενοι εἰς αὐτὴν εὑρήσετε πῶλον δεδεμένον ἐφ’ ὃν οὐδεὶς ἀνθρώπων οὔπω ἐκάθισεν λύσατε αὐτὸν καὶ φέρετε kai legei autois Hypagete eis tēn kōmēn tēn katenanti hymōn kai euthys eisporeuomenoi eis autēn heurēsete pōlon dedemenon eph’ hon oudeis anthrōpōn oupō ekathisen lysate auton kai pherete — NA/TR · 2

- If anyone asks -, ‘Why are you doing this?’ tell [him] -, ‘The Lord vvv needs it and will return… it shortly.

So they went and found [the] colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. They untied it,
Καὶ ἀπῆλθον καὶ εὗρον πῶλον ἔξω ἐπὶ τοῦ ἀμφόδου δεδεμένον πρὸς θύραν καὶ λύουσιν αὐτόν Kai apēlthon kai heuron pōlon exō epi tou amphodou dedemenon pros thyran kai lyousin auton — NA/TR · 4

and some who were standing there asked…, “Why are you untying the colt?
καί τινες τῶν ἑστηκότων ἐκεῖ ἔλεγον αὐτοῖς Τί ποιεῖτε λύοντες τὸν πῶλον kai tines tōn hestēkotōn ekei elegon autois Ti poieite lyontes ton pōlon — NA/TR · 5

- [The disciples] answered… as Jesus had instructed [them], and [the people] gave them permission…

Then they led the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, and He sat on it.
καὶ φέρουσιν τὸν πῶλον πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐπιβάλλουσιν αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῷ καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν kai pherousin ton pōlon pros ton Iēsoun kai epiballousin autōn ta himatia autō kai ekathisen ep’ auton — NA/TR · 7

- Many [ in the crowd ] spread their cloaks on the road, while others [spread] branches they had cut from the fields.
Καὶ πολλοὶ ἔστρωσαν αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια εἰς τὴν ὁδόν δὲ ἄλλοι στιβάδας κόψαντες ἐκ τῶν ἀγρῶν Kai polloi estrōsan autōn ta himatia eis tēn hodon de alloi stibadas kopsantes ek tōn agrōn — NA/TR · 8

- The [ones who] went ahead and those who followed were shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He [who] comes in [the] name of [the] Lord!”

“Blessed [is] the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest!”
Εὐλογημένη ἡ ἐρχομένη βασιλεία ἡμῶν τοῦ πατρὸς Δαυίδ Ὡσαννὰ ἐν τοῖς ὑψίστοις Eulogēmenē hē erchomenē basileia hēmōn tou patros Dauid Hōsanna en tois hypsistois — NA/TR · 10

Then [Jesus] entered… Jerusalem [and went] into the temple [courts]. He looked around at everything, [but since] [it] was already late, He went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
Καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα εἰς τὸ ἱερόν καὶ περιβλεψάμενος πάντα τῆς ὥρας οὔσης ἤδη ὀψὲ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς Βηθανίαν μετὰ τῶν δώδεκα Kai eisēlthen eis Hierosolyma eis to hieron kai periblepsamenos panta tēs hōras ousēs ēdē opse exēlthen eis Bēthanian meta tōn dōdeka — NA/TR · 11
Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

- The next day, [when] they had left… Bethany, [Jesus] was hungry.
Καὶ τῇ ἐπαύριον αὐτῶν ἐξελθόντων ἀπὸ Βηθανίας ἐπείνασεν Kai tē epaurion autōn exelthontōn apo Bēthanias epeinasen — NA/TR · 12

- Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if there was any [fruit] on it. But when He reached… it, He found nothing [on it] except… leaves, since it was not the season for figs.
καὶ ἰδὼν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν συκῆν ἔχουσαν φύλλα ἦλθεν εὑρήσει εἰ ἄρα τι ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ ἐλθὼν ἐπ’ αὐτὴν εὗρεν οὐδὲν εἰ μὴ φύλλα γὰρ ἦν οὐκ ὁ καιρὸς σύκων kai idōn apo makrothen sykēn echousan phylla ēlthen heurēsei ei ara ti en autē kai elthōn ep’ autēn heuren ouden ei mē phylla gar ēn ouk ho kairos sykōn — NA/TR · 13

Then vvv He said to [the tree], “{May} no one ever… eat of your fruit {again}. And His disciples heard [this statement].
καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτῇ μηδεὶς Μηκέτι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα φάγοι ἐκ σοῦ καρπὸν καὶ αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἤκουον kai apokritheis eipen autē mēdeis Mēketi eis ton aiōna phagoi ek sou karpon kai autou hoi mathētai ēkouon — NA/TR · 14
Jesus Cleanses the Temple

When they arrived in Jerusalem, [Jesus] entered… the temple [courts] [and] began to drive out those who were buying and selling vvv vvv [there]. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves.
Καὶ ἔρχονται εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν ἤρξατο ἐκβάλλειν τοὺς ἀγοράζοντας καὶ τοὺς πωλοῦντας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ κατέστρεψεν τὰς τραπέζας τῶν κολλυβιστῶν καὶ τὰς καθέδρας τῶν πωλούντων τὰς περιστερὰς Kai erchontai eis Hierosolyma Kai eiselthōn eis to hieron ērxato ekballein tous agorazontas kai tous pōlountas en tō hierō kai katestrepsen tas trapezas tōn kollybistōn kai tas kathedras tōn pōlountōn tas peristeras — NA/TR · 15

And vvv He would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple [courts].
καὶ οὐκ ἤφιεν ἵνα τις διενέγκῃ σκεῦος διὰ τοῦ ἱεροῦ kai ouk ēphien hina tis dienenkē skeuos dia tou hierou — NA/TR · 16

Then [Jesus] began to teach them, and He declared, “vvv Is it not written -: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’ But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’
καὶ ἐδίδασκεν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἔλεγεν Οὐ γέγραπται ὅτι μου Ὁ οἶκός κληθήσεται οἶκος προσευχῆς πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν δὲ ὑμεῖς πεποιήκατε αὐτὸν Σπήλαιον λῃστῶν kai edidasken autois kai elegen Ou gegraptai hoti mou Ho oikos klēthēsetai oikos proseuchēs pasin tois ethnesin de hymeis pepoiēkate auton Spēlaion lēstōn — NA/TR · 17

When the chief priests and scribes heard [this], they looked for a way to kill Him. For they were afraid of Him, because the whole crowd was astonished at His teaching.
Καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς ἤκουσαν καὶ ἐζήτουν πῶς ἀπολέσωσιν αὐτὸν γὰρ ἐφοβοῦντο αὐτόν γὰρ ὁ πᾶς ὄχλος ἐξεπλήσσετο ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τῇ διδαχῇ Kai hoi archiereis kai hoi grammateis ēkousan kai ezētoun pōs apolesōsin auton gar ephobounto auton gar ho pas ochlos exeplēsseto epi autou tē didachē — NA/TR · 18

And when evening came, [Jesus and His disciples] went out of the city.
Καὶ ὅταν ὀψὲ ἐγένετο ἐξεπορεύοντο ἔξω τῆς πόλεως Kai hotan opse egeneto exeporeuonto exō tēs poleōs — NA/TR · 19
The Withered Fig Tree

[As] they were walking back in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from [its] roots.
Καὶ παραπορευόμενοι πρωῒ εἶδον τὴν συκῆν ἐξηραμμένην ἐκ ῥιζῶν Kai paraporeuomenoi prōi eidon tēn sykēn exērammenēn ek rhizōn — NA/TR · 20

- Peter remembered [it] [and] said -, “Look, Rabbi! The fig tree You cursed has withered.
καὶ ὁ Πέτρος ἀναμνησθεὶς λέγει αὐτῷ ἴδε Ῥαββί ἡ συκῆ ἣν κατηράσω ἐξήρανται kai ho Petros anamnēstheis legei autō ide Rhabbi hē sykē hēn katērasō exērantai — NA/TR · 21

“Have faith in God, - Jesus vvv said to them.
Ἔχετε πίστιν θεοῦ Καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκριθεὶς λέγει αὐτοῖς Echete pistin theou Kai ho Iēsous apokritheis legei autois — NA/TR · 22

“Truly I tell you that if anyone… says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and vvv has no doubt in his heart but believes that vvv [it] will happen, it will be done for him.
ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ὃς ἂν εἴπῃ τούτῳ τῷ ὄρει Ἄρθητι καὶ βλήθητι εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ μὴ διακριθῇ ἐν αὐτοῦ τῇ καρδίᾳ ἀλλὰ πιστεύῃ ὅτι ὃ λαλεῖ γίνεται ἔσται αὐτῷ amēn legō hymin hoti hos an eipē toutō tō orei Arthēti kai blēthēti eis tēn thalassan kai mē diakrithē en autou tē kardia alla pisteuē hoti ho lalei ginetai estai autō — NA/TR · 23

Therefore… I tell you, vvv whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received [it], and [it] will be yours.
διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν πάντα ὅσα καὶ αἰτεῖσθε προσεύχεσθε πιστεύετε ὅτι ἐλάβετε καὶ ἔσται ὑμῖν dia touto legō hymin panta hosa kai aiteisthe proseuchesthe pisteuete hoti elabete kai estai hymin — NA/TR · 24

And when you stand to pray, if you hold anything against [another], forgive [it], so that your Father in heaven will forgive vvv your trespasses as well.

Jesus’ Authority Challenged

- After their return… to Jerusalem,… [Jesus] was walking in the temple [courts], [and] the chief priests, - scribes, and elders came up to Him.
Καὶ ἔρχονται πάλιν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ αὐτοῦ περιπατοῦντος ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ἔρχονται πρὸς αὐτὸν Kai erchontai palin eis Hierosolyma kai autou peripatountos en tō hierō hoi archiereis kai hoi grammateis kai hoi presbyteroi erchontai pros auton — NA/TR · 27

“By what authority are You doing these things? they asked -. “[And] who gave You the authority to do [them]?
Ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ποιεῖς ταῦτα καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ ἢ τίς ἔδωκεν σοι ταύτην τὴν ἐξουσίαν ἵνα ποιῇς ταῦτα En poia exousia poieis tauta kai elegon autō ē tis edōken soi tautēn tēn exousian hina poiēs tauta — NA/TR · 28

“I will ask you one question, - Jesus replied…, “and [if] you answer Me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
Ἐπερωτήσω ὑμᾶς ἕνα λόγον δὲ Ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἀποκρίθητέ μοι καὶ ἐρῶ ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ποιῶ ταῦτα Eperōtēsō hymas hena logon de Ho Iēsous eipen autois kai apokrithēte moi kai erō hymin en poia exousia poiō tauta — NA/TR · 29

John’s baptism— was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me!

- They deliberated among themselves what they should answer -: “If we say, ‘From heaven, He will ask, ‘Why… then vvv did you not believe him?
Καὶ διελογίζοντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς Τί εἴπωμεν λέγοντες Ἐὰν εἴπωμεν Ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐρεῖ Διὰ τί οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ Kai dielogizonto pros heautous Ti eipōmen legontes Ean eipōmen Ex ouranou erei Dia ti oun ouk episteusate autō — NA/TR · 31

But if we say, ‘From men’… they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John truly was a prophet.

So they answered - -, vvv “We do not know. And Jesus replied…, “Neither {will} I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
