Chapter 13

Temple Destruction and Other Signs

1

As [Jesus] was leaving… the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, look at [the magnificent] stones and buildings!

2

“Do you see [all] these great buildings? - Jesus replied -. “Not [one]… stone here will be left on [another]; [every one] vvv vvv will be thrown down.

3

While [Jesus] was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him vvv privately,

Καὶ αὐτοῦ καθημένου εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν κατέναντι τοῦ ἱεροῦ Πέτρος καὶ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωάννης καὶ Ἀνδρέας ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν κατ’ ἰδίαν Kai autou kathēmenou eis to oros tōn Elaiōn katenanti tou hierou Petros kai Iakōbos kai Iōannēs kai Andreas epērōta auton kat’ idian — NA/TR · 3

4

“Tell us, when {will} these things happen? And what [will be] the sign that vvv [they] are about to be fulfilled?

Εἰπὸν ἡμῖν πότε ταῦτα ἔσται καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον ὅταν πάντα ταῦτα μέλλῃ συντελεῖσθαι Eipon hēmin pote tauta estai kai ti to sēmeion hotan panta tauta mellē synteleisthai — NA/TR · 4

5

  • Jesus began by telling them, “See to it [that] [no one] deceives you.

6

Many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am [He], and will deceive many.

7

  • When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, {do} not be alarmed. [ These things ] must happen, but the end [is] still to come.

δὲ ὅταν ἀκούσητε πολέμους καὶ ἀκοὰς πολέμων μὴ θροεῖσθε δεῖ γενέσθαι ἀλλ’ τὸ τέλος οὔπω de hotan akousēte polemous kai akoas polemōn mē throeisthe dei genesthai all’ to telos oupō — NA/TR · 7

8

  • Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, [as well as] famines. These [are] [the] beginning of birth pains.

Witnessing to All Nations

9

[So] be on your guard… You will be delivered over to [the] councils and beaten in [the] synagogues. On My account… you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.

10

And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all the nations.

καὶ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον δεῖ πρῶτον κηρυχθῆναι εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔθνη kai to euangelion dei prōton kērychthēnai eis panta ta ethnē — NA/TR · 10

11

But when they arrest you [and] hand [you] over, {do} not worry beforehand what to say. Instead, speak whatever… you are given at that time, for it will not be… you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

καὶ ὅταν ἄγωσιν ὑμᾶς παραδιδόντες μὴ προμεριμνᾶτε τί λαλήσητε ἀλλ’ λαλεῖτε τοῦτο ὃ ἐὰν ὑμῖν δοθῇ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ γάρ ἐστε οὐ ὑμεῖς οἱ λαλοῦντες ἀλλὰ τὸ Ἅγιον τὸ Πνεῦμα kai hotan agōsin hymas paradidontes mē promerimnate ti lalēsēte all’ laleite touto ho ean hymin dothē en ekeinē tē hōra gar este ou hymeis hoi lalountes alla to Hagion to Pneuma — NA/TR · 11

12

  • Brother will betray brother to death, and a father [his] child. Children will rise against [their] parents and vvv have them put to death.

13

  • You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the [one who] perseveres to [the] end will be saved.

καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ μου τὸ ὄνομά δὲ ὁ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος οὗτος σωθήσεται kai esesthe misoumenoi hypo pantōn dia mou to onoma de ho hypomeinas eis telos houtos sōthēsetai — NA/TR · 13

The Abomination of Desolation

14

So when you see the abomination of desolation standing where vvv it should not be ({let} the reader understand), then {let} those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

δὲ Ὅταν ἴδητε τὸ βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως ἑστηκότα ὅπου οὐ δεῖ ὁ ἀναγινώσκων νοείτω τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὄρη de Hotan idēte to bdelygma tēs erēmōseōs hestēkota hopou ou dei ho anaginōskōn noeitō tote hoi en tē Ioudaia pheugetōsan eis ta orē — NA/TR · 14

15

{Let} [no one] on the housetop vvv go back inside… to retrieve anything from his house.

16

And {let} [no one] in the field vvv return for… his cloak.

καὶ ὁ εἰς τὸν ἀγρὸν μὴ ἐπιστρεψάτω εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω ἆραι αὐτοῦ τὸ ἱμάτιον kai ho eis ton agron mē epistrepsatō eis ta opisō arai autou to himation — NA/TR · 16

17

[How] miserable those days [will be] for pregnant… and nursing [mothers]!

18

  • Pray that vvv this will not occur in the winter.

δὲ προσεύχεσθε ἵνα μὴ γένηται χειμῶνος de proseuchesthe hina mē genētai cheimōnos — NA/TR · 18

19

For those will be days of tribulation unseen… from [the] beginning of God’s creation… until now, and never… to be [seen again].

20

  • If [the] Lord vvv had not cut short those days, nobody… vvv would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom He has chosen, He has cut them short…

καὶ εἰ Κύριος μὴ ἐκολόβωσεν τὰς ἡμέρας οὐκ πᾶσα σάρξ ἂν ἐσώθη ἀλλὰ διὰ τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς οὓς ἐξελέξατο ἐκολόβωσεν τὰς ἡμέρας kai ei Kyrios mē ekolobōsen tas hēmeras ouk pasa sarx an esōthē alla dia tous eklektous hous exelexato ekolobōsen tas hēmeras — NA/TR · 20

21

  • At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here [is] the Christ! [or] ‘There [He is]! vvv do not believe [it].

22

For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders - to deceive [even] the elect, if [that were] possible.

γὰρ ψευδόχριστοι καὶ ψευδοπροφῆται ἐγερθήσονται καὶ δώσουσιν σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα πρὸς τὸ ἀποπλανᾶν τοὺς ἐκλεκτούς εἰ δυνατὸν gar pseudochristoi kai pseudoprophētai egerthēsontai kai dōsousin sēmeia kai terata pros to apoplanan tous eklektous ei dynaton — NA/TR · 22

23

[So] vvv be on your guard; I have told you everything {in advance}.

The Return of the Son of Man

24

But in those days, after that tribulation: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon vvv will not give its light;

Ἀλλὰ ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις μετὰ τὴν ἐκείνην θλῖψιν Ὁ ἥλιος σκοτισθήσεται Καὶ ἡ σελήνη οὐ δώσει αὐτῆς τὸ φέγγος Alla en ekeinais tais hēmerais meta tēn ekeinēn thlipsin Ho hēlios skotisthēsetai Kai hē selēnē ou dōsei autēs to phengos — NA/TR · 24

25

  • the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.’

26

vvv At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in [the] clouds with great power and glory.

27

And… He will send out the angels to gather His elect from the four winds, from [the] ends of [the] earth to [the] ends of heaven.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

28

Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as… its branches become tender and sprout leaves, you know that summer is near.

δὲ μάθετε τὴν παραβολήν Ἀπὸ τῆς συκῆς ὅταν ἤδη αὐτῆς ὁ κλάδος γένηται ἁπαλὸς καὶ ἐκφύῃ τὰ φύλλα γινώσκετε ὅτι τὸ θέρος ἐστίν ἐγγὺς de mathete tēn parabolēn Apo tēs sykēs hotan ēdē autēs ho klados genētai hapalos kai ekphyē ta phylla ginōskete hoti to theros estin engys — NA/TR · 28

29

So also, when you see these things happening, know that He is near, right at [the] door.

30

Truly I tell you, this generation vvv vvv will not pass away until… all these things have happened.

31

  • Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words vvv vvv will never pass away.

ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ παρελεύσονται δὲ μου οἱ λόγοι οὐ μὴ παρελεύσονται ho ouranos kai hē gē pareleusontai de mou hoi logoi ou mē pareleusontai — NA/TR · 31

Readiness at Any Hour

32

  • No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only… the Father.

33

Be on your guard [and] stay alert! For vvv you do not know when the appointed time will come.

34

[It is] like a man going on a journey [who] left his house, put each - servant in charge of his [own] task, and instructed the doorkeeper to keep watch.

Ὡς ἄνθρωπος ἀπόδημος ἀφεὶς αὐτοῦ τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ δοὺς ἑκάστῳ αὐτοῦ τοῖς δούλοις τὴν ἐξουσίαν αὐτοῦ τὸ ἔργον καὶ ἐνετείλατο τῷ θυρωρῷ ἵνα γρηγορῇ Hōs anthrōpos apodēmos apheis autou tēn oikian kai dous hekastō autou tois doulois tēn exousian autou to ergon kai eneteilato tō thyrōrō hina grēgorē — NA/TR · 34

35

Therefore keep watch, because vvv you do not know when the master of the house will return— whether in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or in the morning.

36

Otherwise, he may arrive without notice [and] find you sleeping.

37

And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Keep watch!

δὲ ὃ λέγω ὑμῖν λέγω πᾶσιν γρηγορεῖτε de ho legō hymin legō pasin grēgoreite — NA/TR · 37
