Chapter 16
The Resurrection
1
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the [mother] of James, and Salome bought spices so they could go [and] anoint [the body of Jesus].
Καὶ τοῦ σαββάτου διαγενομένου Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Ἰακώβου καὶ Σαλώμη ἠγόρασαν ἀρώματα ἵνα ἐλθοῦσαι ἀλείψωσιν αὐτόν Kai tou sabbatou diagenomenou Maria hē Magdalēnē kai Maria hē tou Iakōbou kai Salōmē ēgorasan arōmata hina elthousai aleipsōsin auton — NA/TR · 1

- Very early on the first [day] of the week, just after sunrise…, they went to the tomb.
καὶ λίαν πρωῒ τῇ μιᾷ τῶν σαββάτων τοῦ ἡλίου ἀνατείλαντος ἔρχονται ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον kai lian prōi tē mia tōn sabbatōn tou hēliou anateilantos erchontai epi to mnēmeion — NA/TR · 2

- They were asking one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance of the tomb?
καὶ ἔλεγον πρὸς ἑαυτάς Τίς ἀποκυλίσει τὸν λίθον ἡμῖν ἐκ τῆς θύρας τοῦ μνημείου kai elegon pros heautas Tis apokylisei ton lithon hēmin ek tēs thyras tou mnēmeiou — NA/TR · 3

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, even though it was extremely large.
καὶ ἀναβλέψασαι θεωροῦσιν ὅτι ὁ λίθος ἀποκεκύλισται γὰρ ἦν σφόδρα μέγας kai anablepsasai theōrousin hoti ho lithos apokekylistai gar ēn sphodra megas — NA/TR · 4

When they entered… the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
Καὶ εἰσελθοῦσαι εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον εἶδον νεανίσκον περιβεβλημένον λευκήν στολὴν καθήμενον ἐν τοῖς δεξιοῖς καὶ ἐξεθαμβήθησαν Kai eiselthousai eis to mnēmeion eidon neaniskon peribeblēmenon leukēn stolēn kathēmenon en tois dexiois kai exethambēthēsan — NA/TR · 5

But he said to them, “{Do} not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here! See the place where they put Him.
δὲ ὁ λέγει αὐταῖς Μὴ ἐκθαμβεῖσθε ζητεῖτε Ἰησοῦν τὸν Ναζαρηνὸν τὸν ἐσταυρωμένον ἠγέρθη ἔστιν οὐκ ὧδε ἴδε ὁ τόπος ὅπου ἔθηκαν αὐτόν de ho legei autais Mē ekthambeisthe zēteite Iēsoun ton Nazarēnon ton estaurōmenon ēgerthē estin ouk hōde ide ho topos hopou ethēkan auton — NA/TR · 6

But go, tell His disciples and Peter -, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him, just as He told you.
ἀλλὰ ὑπάγετε εἴπατε αὐτοῦ τοῖς μαθηταῖς καὶ τῷ Πέτρῳ ὅτι Προάγει ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν ἐκεῖ ὄψεσθε αὐτὸν καθὼς εἶπεν ὑμῖν alla hypagete eipate autou tois mathētais kai tō Petrō hoti Proagei hymas eis tēn Galilaian ekei opsesthe auton kathōs eipen hymin — NA/TR · 7

So [the women] left… the tomb and ran away, vvv trembling and bewildered. And vvv in their fear they did not say… [a word to anyone].
Καὶ ἐξελθοῦσαι ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου ἔφυγον γὰρ εἶχεν τρόμος αὐτὰς καὶ ἔκστασις καὶ γάρ ἐφοβοῦντο εἶπαν οὐδὲν οὐδενὶ Kai exelthousai apo tou mnēmeiou ephygon gar eichen tromos autas kai ekstasis kai gar ephobounto eipan ouden oudeni — NA/TR · 8
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

Early [on the] first [day] of the week, after [Jesus] had risen, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had driven out seven demons.
πρωῒ πρώτῃ σαββάτου δὲ Ἀναστὰς ἐφάνη πρῶτον Μαρίᾳ τῇ Μαγδαληνῇ παρ’ ἧς ἐκβεβλήκει ἑπτὰ δαιμόνια prōi prōtē sabbatou de Anastas ephanē prōton Maria tē Magdalēnē par’ hēs ekbeblēkei hepta daimonia — NA/TR · 9

She went [and] told those who had been with Him, who were mourning and weeping.
ἐκείνη πορευθεῖσα ἀπήγγειλεν τοῖς γενομένοις μετ’ αὐτοῦ πενθοῦσι καὶ κλαίουσιν ekeinē poreutheisa apēngeilen tois genomenois met’ autou penthousi kai klaiousin — NA/TR · 10

And when they heard that [Jesus] was alive and she had seen Him…, they did not believe [it].
κἀκεῖνοι ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ζῇ καὶ ἐθεάθη ὑπ’ αὐτῆς ἠπίστησαν kakeinoi akousantes hoti zē kai etheathē hyp’ autēs ēpistēsan — NA/TR · 11
Jesus Appears to Two Disciples

- After [this], [Jesus] appeared in a different form to two of them as they walked along in [the] country.
δὲ Μετὰ ταῦτα ἐφανερώθη ἐν ἑτέρᾳ μορφῇ δυσὶν ἐξ αὐτῶν περιπατοῦσιν πορευομένοις εἰς ἀγρόν de Meta tauta ephanerōthē en hetera morphē dysin ex autōn peripatousin poreuomenois eis agron — NA/TR · 12

And they went back and reported [it] to the rest, but they did not believe them either.
κἀκεῖνοι ἀπελθόντες ἀπήγγειλαν τοῖς λοιποῖς ἐπίστευσαν ἐκείνοις οὐδὲ kakeinoi apelthontes apēngeilan tois loipois episteusan ekeinois oude — NA/TR · 13
The Great Commission

- Later, as they were eating, [Jesus] appeared to the Eleven and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because vvv they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.
δὲ Ὕστερον αὐτοῖς ἀνακειμένοις ἐφανερώθη τοῖς ἕνδεκα καὶ ὠνείδισεν αὐτῶν τὴν ἀπιστίαν καὶ σκληροκαρδίαν ὅτι οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν τοῖς θεασαμένοις αὐτὸν ἐγηγερμένον de Hysteron autois anakeimenois ephanerōthē tois hendeka kai ōneidisen autōn tēn apistian kai sklērokardian hoti ouk episteusan tois theasamenois auton egēgermenon — NA/TR · 14

And He said to them, “Go into all the world [and] preach the gospel to every creature.
Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πορευθέντες εἰς ἅπαντα τὸν κόσμον κηρύξατε τὸ εὐαγγέλιον πάσῃ τῇ κτίσει Kai eipen autois Poreuthentes eis hapanta ton kosmon kēryxate to euangelion pasē tē ktisei — NA/TR · 15

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
ὁ πιστεύσας καὶ βαπτισθεὶς σωθήσεται δὲ ὁ ἀπιστήσας κατακριθήσεται ho pisteusas kai baptistheis sōthēsetai de ho apistēsas katakrithēsetai — NA/TR · 16

And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
δὲ ταῦτα σημεῖα παρακολουθήσει τοῖς πιστεύσασιν ἐν μου τῷ ὀνόματί ἐκβαλοῦσιν δαιμόνια λαλήσουσιν καιναῖς γλώσσαις de tauta sēmeia parakolouthēsei tois pisteusasin en mou tō onomati ekbalousin daimonia lalēsousin kainais glōssais — NA/TR · 17

- they will pick up snakes with their hands, and if they drink any deadly poison, vvv vvv it will not harm them; they will lay [their] hands on [the] sick, and they will be made well.
και ἀροῦσιν ὄφεις ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν κἂν πίωσιν τι θανάσιμόν οὐ μὴ βλάψῃ αὐτοὺς ἐπιθήσουσιν χεῖρας ἐπὶ ἀρρώστους καὶ ἕξουσιν καλῶς kai arousin opheis en tais chersin kan piōsin ti thanasimon ou mē blapsē autous epithēsousin cheiras epi arrōstous kai hexousin kalōs — NA/TR · 18
The Ascension

- After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and sat down at [the] right hand of God.
οὖν μὲν μετὰ τὸ Ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς λαλῆσαι αὐτοῖς ἀνελήμφθη εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ oun men meta to Ho Kyrios Iēsous lalēsai autois anelēmphthē eis ton ouranon kai ekathisen ek dexiōn tou Theou — NA/TR · 19

And they went out [and] preached everywhere, [and] the Lord worked through [them], confirming [His] word by the signs that accompanied [it].
δὲ ἐκεῖνοι ἐξελθόντες ἐκήρυξαν πανταχοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου συνεργοῦντος καὶ βεβαιοῦντος τὸν λόγον διὰ τῶν σημείων ἐπακολουθούντων de ekeinoi exelthontes ekēryxan pantachou tou Kyriou synergountos kai bebaiountos ton logon dia tōn sēmeiōn epakolouthountōn — NA/TR · 20
