Chapter 5
The Demons and the Pigs

- On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes.
Καὶ εἰς τὸ πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης ἦλθον εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν Γερασηνῶν Kai eis to peran tēs thalassēs ēlthon eis tēn chōran tōn Gerasēnōn — NA/TR · 1

As soon as… [Jesus] got out of the boat, He was met by… a man with an unclean spirit, [who was] coming from the tombs.
καὶ εὐθὺς αὐτοῦ ἐξελθόντος ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ ἄνθρωπος ἐν ἀκαθάρτῳ πνεύματι ἐκ τῶν μνημείων kai euthys autou exelthontos ek tou ploiou hypēntēsen autō anthrōpos en akathartō pneumati ek tōn mnēmeiōn — NA/TR · 2

[This man] had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained -, [even] with chains.
ὃς εἶχεν τὴν κατοίκησιν ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν καὶ ἐδύνατο οὐκέτι οὐδεὶς δῆσαι αὐτὸν οὐδὲ ἁλύσει hos eichen tēn katoikēsin en tois mnēmasin kai edynato ouketi oudeis dēsai auton oude halysei — NA/TR · 3

[Though] he {was} often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken… the chains and shattered the shackles. Now [there was] no one with the strength to subdue him.

vvv vvv Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.

When [the man] saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him.
Καὶ ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἔδραμεν καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτόν Kai idōn ton Iēsoun apo makrothen edramen kai prosekynēsen auton — NA/TR · 6

And he shouted vvv in a loud voice -, “What do You [want] with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!

For [Jesus] had already declared…, “Come out of [this] man -, {you} unclean spirit!

“What [is] your name? [Jesus] asked… “My name [is] Legion, vvv he replied, “for we are many.

And he begged [Jesus] repeatedly vvv vvv not to send them out of [that] region.
καὶ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν πολλὰ ἵνα μὴ ἀποστείλῃ αὐτὰ ἔξω τῆς χώρας kai parekalei auton polla hina mē aposteilē auta exō tēs chōras — NA/TR · 10

- There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.
δὲ ἐκεῖ τῷ πρὸς ὄρει μεγάλη ἀγέλη χοίρων Ἦν βοσκομένη de ekei tō pros orei megalē agelē choirōn Ēn boskomenē — NA/TR · 11

[So] [the demons] begged [Jesus] -, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter… them.
καὶ παρεκάλεσαν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Πέμψον ἡμᾶς εἰς τοὺς χοίρους ἵνα εἰσέλθωμεν εἰς αὐτοὺς kai parekalesan auton legontes Pempson hēmas eis tous choirous hina eiselthōmen eis autous — NA/TR · 12

- He gave them permission…, and the unclean spirits came out [and] went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the [water].
Καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν αὐτοῖς καὶ τὰ τὰ ἀκάθαρτα πνεύματα ἐξελθόντα εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους καὶ ἡ ἀγέλη ὡς δισχίλιοι ὥρμησεν κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ ἐπνίγοντο ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ Kai epetrepsen autois kai ta ta akatharta pneumata exelthonta eisēlthon eis tous choirous kai hē agelē hōs dischilioi hōrmēsen kata tou krēmnou eis tēn thalassan kai epnigonto en tē thalassē — NA/TR · 13

- Those tending [the pigs] ran off and reported [this] in the town and - countryside, and [the people] went out to see what vvv vvv had happened.
Καὶ οἱ βόσκοντες αὐτοὺς ἔφυγον καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀγρούς καὶ ἦλθον ἰδεῖν τί ἐστιν τὸ γεγονός Kai hoi boskontes autous ephygon kai apēngeilan eis tēn polin kai eis tous agrous kai ēlthon idein ti estin to gegonos — NA/TR · 14

When they came to Jesus, they saw the [man] who had been possessed - by the legion {of demons} sitting [there], clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
καὶ ἔρχονται πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ θεωροῦσιν τὸν δαιμονιζόμενον τὸν ἐσχηκότα τὸν λεγιῶνα καθήμενον ἱματισμένον καὶ σωφρονοῦντα καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν kai erchontai pros ton Iēsoun kai theōrousin ton daimonizomenon ton eschēkota ton legiōna kathēmenon himatismenon kai sōphronounta kai ephobēthēsan — NA/TR · 15

- Those who had seen [it] described… what had happened to the demon-possessed man and [also to] the pigs.
καὶ οἱ ἰδόντες διηγήσαντο αὐτοῖς πῶς ἐγένετο τῷ δαιμονιζομένῳ καὶ περὶ τῶν χοίρων kai hoi idontes diēgēsanto autois pōs egeneto tō daimonizomenō kai peri tōn choirōn — NA/TR · 16

And [the people] began to beg [Jesus] to leave… their region.
καὶ ἤρξαντο παρακαλεῖν αὐτὸν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπὸ αὐτῶν τῶν ὁρίων kai ērxanto parakalein auton apelthein apo autōn tōn horiōn — NA/TR · 17

As He was getting into the boat, the [man] who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him.
Καὶ αὐτοῦ ἐμβαίνοντος εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ὁ δαιμονισθεὶς παρεκάλει αὐτὸν ἵνα ᾖ μετ’ αὐτοῦ Kai autou embainontos eis to ploion ho daimonistheis parekalei auton hina ē met’ autou — NA/TR · 18

But vvv [Jesus] would not allow him. “Go vvv vvv home… to your own [people], He said -, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you.
καὶ οὐκ ἀφῆκεν αὐτόν Ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου πρὸς τοὺς σούς ἀλλὰ λέγει αὐτῷ καὶ ἀπάγγειλον αὐτοῖς ὅσα ὁ Κύριός πεποίηκεν σοι καὶ ἠλέησέν σε kai ouk aphēken auton Hypage eis ton oikon sou pros tous sous alla legei autō kai apangeilon autois hosa ho Kyrios pepoiēken soi kai ēleēsen se — NA/TR · 19

[So] [the man] went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.
Καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἤρξατο κηρύσσειν ἐν τῇ Δεκαπόλει ὅσα ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ καὶ πάντες ἐθαύμαζον Kai apēlthen kai ērxato kēryssein en tē Dekapolei hosa ho Iēsous epoiēsen autō kai pantes ethaumazon — NA/TR · 20
The Healing Touch of Jesus

When Jesus had again crossed… by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him - beside the sea.
Καὶ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ διαπεράσαντος πάλιν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ εἰς τὸ πέραν πολὺς ὄχλος συνήχθη ἐπ’ αὐτόν καὶ ἦν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν Kai tou Iēsou diaperasantos palin en tō ploiō eis to peran polys ochlos synēchthē ep’ auton kai ēn para tēn thalassan — NA/TR · 21

- A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing [Jesus], he fell at His feet
καὶ εἷς τῶν ἀρχισυναγώγων ὀνόματι Ἰάϊρος ἔρχεται καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὸν πίπτει πρὸς αὐτοῦ τοὺς πόδας kai heis tōn archisynagōgōn onomati Iairos erchetai kai idōn auton piptei pros autou tous podas — NA/TR · 22

and pleaded with Him urgently -, “My little daughter is near death. [Please] come [and] place [Your] hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.
καὶ παρακαλεῖ αὐτὸν πολλὰ λέγων ὅτι μου Τὸ θυγάτριόν ἔχει ἐσχάτως ἵνα ἐλθὼν ἐπιθῇς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῇ ἵνα σωθῇ καὶ ζήσῃ kai parakalei auton polla legōn hoti mou To thygatrion echei eschatōs hina elthōn epithēs tas cheiras autē hina sōthē kai zēsē — NA/TR · 23

So [Jesus] went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.
Καὶ ἀπῆλθεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ πολύς ὄχλος ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ καὶ συνέθλιβον αὐτόν Kai apēlthen met’ autou kai polys ochlos ēkolouthei autō kai synethlibon auton — NA/TR · 24

And a woman [was there] who had suffered vvv vvv from bleeding for twelve years.
Καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος δώδεκα ἔτη Kai gynē ousa en rhysei haimatos dōdeka etē — NA/TR · 25

- She had borne much {agony} under the care of many physicians and had spent all vvv she had, but to no avail. vvv Instead, [her condition] had only grown vvv vvv worse.
καὶ παθοῦσα πολλὰ ὑπὸ πολλῶν ἰατρῶν καὶ δαπανήσασα τὰ πάντα παρ’ αὐτῆς καὶ μηδὲν ὠφεληθεῖσα ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον ἐλθοῦσα εἰς τὸ χεῖρον kai pathousa polla hypo pollōn iatrōn kai dapanēsasa ta panta par’ autēs kai mēden ōphelētheisa alla mallon elthousa eis to cheiron — NA/TR · 26

When [the woman] heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind [Him] [and] touched His cloak.
ἀκούσασα τὰ περὶ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐλθοῦσα ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ ὄπισθεν ἥψατο αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἱματίου akousasa ta peri tou Iēsou elthousa en tō ochlō opisthen hēpsato autou tou himatiou — NA/TR · 27

For she kept saying -, “If only I touch… His garments, I will be healed.
γὰρ ἔλεγεν ὅτι Ἐὰν ἅψωμαι κἂν αὐτοῦ τῶν ἱματίων σωθήσομαι gar elegen hoti Ean hapsōmai kan autou tōn himatiōn sōthēsomai — NA/TR · 28

vvv Immediately her vvv vvv bleeding stopped, and she sensed in [her] body that she was healed of [her] affliction.
καὶ εὐθὺς αὐτῆς ἡ πηγὴ τοῦ αἵματος ἐξηράνθη καὶ ἔγνω τῷ σώματι ὅτι ἴαται ἀπὸ τῆς μάστιγος kai euthys autēs hē pēgē tou haimatos exēranthē kai egnō tō sōmati hoti iatai apo tēs mastigos — NA/TR · 29

- At once Jesus was aware… [that] power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?
Καὶ εὐθὺς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐπιγνοὺς ἐν ἑαυτῷ τὴν δύναμιν ἐξελθοῦσαν ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἐπιστραφεὶς ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ ἔλεγεν Τίς ἥψατο μου τῶν ἱματίων Kai euthys ho Iēsous epignous en heautō tēn dynamin exelthousan ex autou epistrapheis en tō ochlō elegen Tis hēpsato mou tōn himatiōn — NA/TR · 30

- His disciples answered -, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?
Καὶ αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ Βλέπεις τὸν ὄχλον συνθλίβοντά σε καὶ λέγεις Τίς ἥψατο μου Kai autou hoi mathētai elegon autō Blepeis ton ochlon synthlibonta se kai legeis Tis hēpsato mou — NA/TR · 31

But He kept looking around to see who had done this.
Καὶ περιεβλέπετο ἰδεῖν τὴν ποιήσασαν τοῦτο Kai perieblepeto idein tēn poiēsasan touto — NA/TR · 32

Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth.
δὲ ἡ γυνὴ εἰδυῖα ὃ γέγονεν αὐτῇ ἦλθεν καὶ προσέπεσεν αὐτῷ καὶ τρέμουσα φοβηθεῖσα καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ τὴν πᾶσαν ἀλήθειαν de hē gynē eiduia ho gegonen autē ēlthen kai prosepesen autō kai tremousa phobētheisa kai eipen autō tēn pasan alētheian — NA/TR · 33

“Daughter, - said [Jesus] -, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.
Θυγάτηρ δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν αὐτῇ σου ἡ πίστις σέσωκέν σε ὕπαγε εἰς εἰρήνην καὶ ἴσθι ὑγιὴς ἀπὸ σου τῆς μάστιγός Thygatēr de Ho eipen autē sou hē pistis sesōken se hypage eis eirēnēn kai isthi hygiēs apo sou tēs mastigos — NA/TR · 34

vvv vvv While He was still speaking, [ messengers ] from [the house of Jairus] arrived [and] said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?

But Jesus overheard vvv vvv their conversation and said to [Jairus], “{Do} not be afraid; just believe.

And vvv He did not allow anyone to accompany… Him except… Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
καὶ οὐκ ἀφῆκεν οὐδένα συνακολουθῆσαι μετ’ αὐτοῦ εἰ μὴ τὸν Πέτρον καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν Ἰακώβου kai ouk aphēken oudena synakolouthēsai met’ autou ei mē ton Petron kai Iakōbon kai Iōannēn ton adelphon Iakōbou — NA/TR · 37

When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, [Jesus] saw [the] commotion and [the people] weeping and wailing loudly.

- He went inside [and] asked -, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child vvv is not dead, but asleep.
καὶ εἰσελθὼν λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί θορυβεῖσθε καὶ κλαίετε τὸ παιδίον οὐκ ἀπέθανεν ἀλλὰ καθεύδει kai eiselthōn legei autois Ti thorybeisthe kai klaiete to paidion ouk apethanen alla katheudei — NA/TR · 39

And they laughed at Him. [After] He had put them all outside -, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions…, and went in [to see] the child -.
καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ δὲ Αὐτὸς ἐκβαλὼν πάντας παραλαμβάνει τὸν τοῦ παιδίου πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ τοὺς μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰσπορεύεται ὅπου τὸ παιδίον ἦν kai kategelōn autou de Autos ekbalōn pantas paralambanei ton tou paidiou patera kai tēn mētera kai tous met’ autou kai eisporeuetai hopou to paidion ēn — NA/TR · 40

- Taking [her] by the hand, [Jesus] said -, “Talitha koum! which vvv means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!
καὶ κρατήσας τοῦ παιδίου τῆς χειρὸς λέγει αὐτῇ Ταλιθὰ κούμ ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Τὸ Κοράσιον λέγω σοὶ ἔγειρε kai kratēsas tou paidiou tēs cheiros legei autē Talitha koum ho estin methermēneuomenon To Korasion legō soi egeire — NA/TR · 41

- Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around (- she was twelve years old). And at once they were utterly astounded…
καὶ εὐθὺς τὸ κοράσιον ἀνέστη καὶ περιεπάτει γὰρ ἦν δώδεκα ἐτῶν καὶ εὐθὺς ἐξέστησαν ἐκστάσει μεγάλῃ kai euthys to korasion anestē kai periepatei gar ēn dōdeka etōn kai euthys exestēsan ekstasei megalē — NA/TR · 42

Then [Jesus] gave strict orders… that no one should know about this, and He told [them] to give her [something] to eat.
καὶ διεστείλατο πολλὰ αὐτοῖς ἵνα μηδεὶς γνοῖ τοῦτο καὶ εἶπεν δοθῆναι αὐτῇ φαγεῖν kai diesteilato polla autois hina mēdeis gnoi touto kai eipen dothēnai autē phagein — NA/TR · 43
