Chapter 7

The Tradition of the Elders

Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around… [Jesus],

Καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καί τινες τῶν γραμματέων ἐλθόντες ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων συνάγονται πρὸς αὐτὸν Kai hoi Pharisaioi kai tines tōn grammateōn elthontes apo Hierosolymōn synagontai pros auton — NA/TR · 1

and they saw some of His disciples eating… [with] hands [that were] defiled— that is, unwashed.

καὶ ἰδόντες ὅτι τινὰς τῶν αὐτοῦ μαθητῶν ἐσθίουσιν τοὺς ἄρτους χερσίν κοιναῖς τοῦτ’ ἔστιν ἀνίπτοις kai idontes hoti tinas tōn autou mathētōn esthiousin tous artous chersin koinais tout’ estin aniptois — NA/TR · 2

Now in holding to the tradition of the elders, the Pharisees and all the Jews {do} not eat until… they wash [their] hands ceremonially.

γὰρ κρατοῦντες τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων Οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν ἐὰν μὴ νίψωνται τὰς χεῖρας πυγμῇ gar kratountes tēn paradosin tōn presbyterōn Hoi Pharisaioi kai pantes hoi Ioudaioi ouk esthiousin ean mē nipsōntai tas cheiras pygmē — NA/TR · 3

And [on returning] from the market, vvv they do not eat unless… they wash. And there are many other traditions for them to observe, [including] the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and couches for dining.

καὶ ἀπ’ ἀγορᾶς οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν ἐὰν μὴ βαπτίσωνται καὶ ἐστιν πολλά ἄλλα παρέλαβον ἃ κρατεῖν βαπτισμοὺς ποτηρίων καὶ ξεστῶν καὶ χαλκίων καὶ κλινῶν kai ap’ agoras ouk esthiousin ean mē baptisōntai kai estin polla alla parelabon ha kratein baptismous potēriōn kai xestōn kai chalkiōn kai klinōn — NA/TR · 4

So the Pharisees and scribes questioned [Jesus]: “Why… {do} Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat… with defiled hands.

Καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς ἐπερωτῶσιν αὐτὸν Διὰ τί σου οἱ μαθηταί οὐ περιπατοῦσιν κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων ἀλλὰ ἐσθίουσιν τὸν ἄρτον κοιναῖς χερσὶν Kai hoi Pharisaioi kai hoi grammateis eperōtōsin auton Dia ti sou hoi mathētai ou peripatousin kata tēn paradosin tōn presbyterōn alla esthiousin ton arton koinais chersin — NA/TR · 5

  • Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘These people honor Me with [their] lips, but their hearts are far from Me.

δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἠσαΐας ἐπροφήτευσεν Καλῶς περὶ ὑμῶν τῶν ὑποκριτῶν ὡς γέγραπται ὅτι Οὗτος ὁ λαὸς τιμᾷ με τοῖς χείλεσίν δὲ αὐτῶν Ἡ καρδία ἀπέχει πόρρω ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ de Ho eipen autois Ēsaias eprophēteusen Kalōs peri hymōn tōn hypokritōn hōs gegraptai hoti Houtos ho laos tima me tois cheilesin de autōn Hē kardia apechei porrō ap’ emou — NA/TR · 6

  • They worship Me in vain; they teach [as] doctrine [the] precepts of men.’

You have disregarded the commandment of God to keep the tradition of men.

Ἀφέντες τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ κρατεῖτε τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν ἀνθρώπων Aphentes tēn entolēn tou Theou krateite tēn paradosin tōn anthrōpōn — NA/TR · 8

vvv He went on to say -, “vvv You neatly set aside the command of God to maintain your [own] tradition.

Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Καλῶς ἀθετεῖτε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἵνα τηρήσητε ὑμῶν τὴν παράδοσιν Kai elegen autois Kalōs atheteite tēn entolēn tou Theou hina tērēsēte hymōn tēn paradosin — NA/TR · 9

For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses [his] father or mother vvv must be put to death.’

γὰρ Μωϋσῆς εἶπεν Τίμα σου τὸν πατέρα καὶ σου τὴν μητέρα καί Ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω gar Mōusēs eipen Tima sou ton patera kai sou tēn mētera kai Ho kakologōn patera ē mētera thanatō teleutatō — NA/TR · 10

But you say that if a man says to [his] father or mother, ‘Whatever… you would have received from me [is] Corban (that is, a gift devoted [to God]),

δὲ ὑμεῖς λέγετε Ἐὰν ἄνθρωπος εἴπῃ τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί Ὃ ἐὰν ὠφεληθῇς ἐξ ἐμοῦ Κορβᾶν ὅ ἐστιν Δῶρον de hymeis legete Ean anthrōpos eipē tō patri ē tē mētri Ho ean ōphelēthēs ex emou Korban ho estin Dōron — NA/TR · 11

he [is] no longer permitted to do anything for his father or mother.

αὐτὸν οὐκέτι ἀφίετε ποιῆσαι οὐδὲν τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί auton ouketi aphiete poiēsai ouden tō patri ē tē mētri — NA/TR · 12

[Thus] you nullify the word of God by [the] tradition you have handed down. And you do so in many such [matters].

ἀκυροῦντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ τῇ ὑμῶν παραδόσει ᾗ παρεδώκατε καὶ ποιεῖτε τοιαῦτα πολλὰ παρόμοια akyrountes ton logon tou Theou tē hymōn paradosei hē paredōkate kai poieite toiauta polla paromoia — NA/TR · 13

What Defiles a Man

  • Once again [Jesus] called the crowd [to Him] [and] said -, “All of you, listen to Me and understand:

Καὶ πάλιν προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν ὄχλον ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς πάντες Ἀκούσατέ μου καὶ σύνετε Kai palin proskalesamenos ton ochlon elegen autois pantes Akousate mou kai synete — NA/TR · 14

Nothing that enters… a man - from the outside can defile him; but the things that come out of a man, these are what defile [him].”

οὐδέν εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐστιν αὐτὸν ἔξωθεν ὃ δύναται κοινῶσαι αὐτόν ἀλλὰ τὰ ἐκπορευόμενά ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον ouden eisporeuomenon eis tou anthrōpou estin auton exōthen ho dynatai koinōsai auton alla ta ekporeuomena ek tou anthrōpou estin ta koinounta ton anthrōpon — NA/TR · 15

  • After [Jesus] had left… the crowd [and gone] into [the] house, His disciples inquired about… the parable.

Καὶ ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου εἰς οἶκον αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν τὴν παραβολήν Kai hote eisēlthen apo tou ochlou eis oikon autou hoi mathētai epērōtōn auton tēn parabolēn — NA/TR · 17

“Are you still so dull? He asked -. “vvv Do you not understand? Nothing that enters… a man from the outside vvv can defile him,

ἐστε ὑμεῖς καὶ Οὕτως ἀσύνετοί Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἔξωθεν οὐ δύναται κοινῶσαι αὐτὸν este hymeis kai Houtōs asynetoi Kai legei autois ou noeite hoti pan to eisporeuomenon eis ton anthrōpon exōthen ou dynatai koinōsai auton — NA/TR · 18

because vvv it does not enter… his heart, but [it goes] into the stomach and then is eliminated…” ([Thus] all foods are clean.)

ὅτι οὐκ εἰσπορεύεται εἰς αὐτοῦ τὴν καρδίαν ἀλλ’ εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν καὶ ἐκπορεύεται εἰς τὸν ἀφεδρῶνα πάντα τὰ βρώματα καθαρίζων hoti ouk eisporeuetai eis autou tēn kardian all’ eis tēn koilian kai ekporeuetai eis ton aphedrōna panta ta brōmata katharizōn — NA/TR · 19

  • He continued -: “What comes out of a man, that [is what] defiles [him].

δὲ Ἔλεγεν ὅτι Τὸ ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκεῖνο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον de Elegen hoti To ekporeuomenon ek tou anthrōpou ekeino koinoi ton anthrōpon — NA/TR · 20

For from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,

γὰρ ἐκ ἔσωθεν τῆς καρδίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐκπορεύονται οἱ κακοὶ οἱ διαλογισμοὶ πορνεῖαι κλοπαί φόνοι μοιχεῖαι gar ek esōthen tēs kardias tōn anthrōpōn ekporeuontai hoi kakoi hoi dialogismoi porneiai klopai phonoi moicheiai — NA/TR · 21

greed, wickedness, deceit, debauchery, envy…, slander, arrogance, [and] foolishness.

πλεονεξίαι πονηρίαι δόλος ἀσέλγεια ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρός βλασφημία ὑπερηφανία ἀφροσύνη pleonexiai ponēriai dolos aselgeia ophthalmos ponēros blasphēmia hyperēphania aphrosynē — NA/TR · 22

All these evils come from within, and [these are what] defile a man.

The Faith of the Gentile Woman

  • [Jesus] left that place [and] went to the region of Tyre. Not wanting anyone… to know [He was there], He entered… [a] house, but vvv was unable to escape their notice.

δὲ ἀναστὰς Ἐκεῖθεν ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὰ ὅρια Τύρου ἤθελεν οὐδένα γνῶναι Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς οἰκίαν καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθη λαθεῖν de anastas Ekeithen apēlthen eis ta horia Tyrou ēthelen oudena gnōnai Kai eiselthōn eis oikian kai ouk ēdynēthē lathein — NA/TR · 24

Instead, a woman whose little daughter… had [an] unclean spirit soon heard about Jesus, [and] she came [and] fell at His feet.

ἀλλ’ γυνὴ ἧς τὸ θυγάτριον αὐτῆς εἶχεν ἀκάθαρτον πνεῦμα εὐθὺς ἀκούσασα περὶ αὐτοῦ ἐλθοῦσα προσέπεσεν πρὸς αὐτοῦ τοὺς πόδας all’ gynē hēs to thygatrion autēs eichen akatharton pneuma euthys akousasa peri autou elthousa prosepesen pros autou tous podas — NA/TR · 25

Now she was a Greek woman of Syrophoenician origin, and she kept asking [Jesus] to drive the demon out of her daughter.

δὲ ἦν Ἑλληνίς ἡ γυνὴ τῷ Συροφοινίκισσα γένει καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐκβάλῃ τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐκ αὐτῆς τῆς θυγατρὸς de ēn Hellēnis hē gynē tō Syrophoinikissa genei kai ērōta auton hina ekbalē to daimonion ek autēs tēs thygatros — NA/TR · 26

“First let the children have their fill, He said… “For it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss [it] to the dogs.

“Yes, Lord, - she replied…, “even the dogs under the table eat… the children’s crumbs.

Then [Jesus] told her, “Because of this answer, you may go. The demon has left… your daughter.

And she went vvv vvv vvv home [and] found [her] child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.

καὶ ἀπελθοῦσα εἰς αὐτῆς τὸν οἶκον εὗρεν τὸ παιδίον βεβλημένον ἐπὶ τὴν κλίνην καὶ τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐξεληλυθός kai apelthousa eis autēs ton oikon heuren to paidion beblēmenon epi tēn klinēn kai to daimonion exelēlythos — NA/TR · 30

The Deaf and Mute Man

Then… [Jesus] left… the region of Tyre [and] went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee [and] into… the region of [the] Decapolis.

Καὶ πάλιν ἐξελθὼν ἐκ τῶν ὁρίων Τύρου ἦλθεν διὰ Σιδῶνος εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ὁρίων Δεκαπόλεως Kai palin exelthōn ek tōn horiōn Tyrou ēlthen dia Sidōnos eis tēn thalassan tēs Galilaias ana meson tōn horiōn Dekapoleōs — NA/TR · 31

  • [Some people] brought to Him a man who was deaf and hardly able to speak, and they begged [Jesus] to place [His] hand on him.

Καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτῷ κωφὸν καὶ μογιλάλον καὶ παρακαλοῦσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιθῇ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτῷ Kai pherousin autō kōphon kai mogilalon kai parakalousin auton hina epithē tēn cheira autō — NA/TR · 32

[So] [Jesus] took him… aside privately, away from the crowd, [and] put His fingers into [the man’s] ears. Then He spit [and] touched [the man’s] tongue.

And looking up to heaven, He sighed deeply and said to him, “Ephphatha! (which means, “Be opened!”).

  • Immediately [the man’s] ears were opened and his tongue vvv vvv vvv was released, and he began to speak plainly.

καὶ εὐθὺς αὐτοῦ αἱ ἀκοαί ἠνοίγησαν καὶ αὐτοῦ γλώσσης ὁ δεσμὸς τῆς ἐλύθη καὶ ἐλάλει ὀρθῶς kai euthys autou hai akoai ēnoigēsan kai autou glōssēs ho desmos tēs elythē kai elalei orthōs — NA/TR · 35

  • [Jesus] ordered them not to tell anyone… But the more He ordered them, the more widely… they proclaimed [it].

  • [The people] were utterly astonished… [and] said, “He has done all things well! He makes even the deaf hear and the mute speak!
