Chapter 9
The Transfiguration
1
Then [Jesus] said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who vvv vvv will not taste death before… they see the kingdom of God arrive with power.
Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἰσίν τινες τῶν ἑστηκότων ὧδε οἵτινες οὐ μὴ γεύσωνται θανάτου ἕως ἂν ἴδωσιν τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐληλυθυῖαν ἐν δυνάμει Kai elegen autois Amēn legō hymin hoti eisin tines tōn hestēkotōn hōde hoitines ou mē geusōntai thanatou heōs an idōsin tēn basileian tou Theou elēlythuian en dynamei — NA/TR · 1

- After six days Jesus took with [Him] Peter, - James, and John, and led them up… a high mountain vvv [by] themselves… [There] He was transfigured before them.

- His clothes became radiantly… white, [brighter than] [any] launderer on earth could bleach them.
καὶ αὐτοῦ τὰ ἱμάτια ἐγένετο λίαν στίλβοντα λευκὰ οἷα οὐ γναφεὺς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς δύναται οὕτως λευκᾶναι kai autou ta himatia egeneto lian stilbonta leuka hoia ou gnapheus epi tēs gēs dynatai houtōs leukanai — NA/TR · 3

And Elijah [and] Moses appeared before them, - talking with Jesus.

- Peter vvv said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

For they were all so terrified that vvv [Peter] did not know what else to say.

Then a cloud appeared [and] enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him!
Καὶ νεφέλη ἐγένετο ἐπισκιάζουσα αὐτοῖς καὶ φωνὴ ἐγένετο ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης Οὗτός ἐστιν μου ὁ ἀγαπητός ὁ Υἱός ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ Kai nephelē egeneto episkiazousa autois kai phōnē egeneto ek tēs nephelēs Houtos estin mou ho agapētos ho Huios akouete autou — NA/TR · 7

- Suddenly, [when] they looked around, they saw no one with them except… Jesus.
καὶ ἐξάπινα περιβλεψάμενοι εἶδον οὐκέτι οὐδένα μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν ἀλλὰ μόνον τὸν Ἰησοῦν kai exapina periblepsamenoi eidon ouketi oudena meth’ heautōn alla monon ton Iēsoun — NA/TR · 8

[As] they were coming down… the mountain, [Jesus] admonished them not to tell anyone… what they had seen vvv vvv until the Son of Man had risen from [the] dead.
Καὶ αὐτῶν καταβαινόντων ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους διεστείλατο αὐτοῖς ἵνα διηγήσωνται μηδενὶ ἃ εἶδον εἰ μὴ ὅταν ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀναστῇ ἐκ νεκρῶν Kai autōn katabainontōn ek tou orous diesteilato autois hina diēgēsōntai mēdeni ha eidon ei mē hotan ho Huios tou anthrōpou anastē ek nekrōn — NA/TR · 9

[So] they kept this matter to themselves, discussing what it meant to rise from [the] dead.
καὶ ἐκράτησαν τὸν λόγον πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς συζητοῦντες τί ἐστιν τὸ ἀναστῆναι ἐκ νεκρῶν kai ekratēsan ton logon pros heautous syzētountes ti estin to anastēnai ek nekrōn — NA/TR · 10

And they asked [Jesus] -, “{Why do} the scribes say that Elijah must come first?
καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες Ὅτι οἱ γραμματεῖς Λέγουσιν ὅτι Ἠλίαν δεῖ ἐλθεῖν πρῶτον kai epērōtōn auton legontes Hoti hoi grammateis Legousin hoti Ēlian dei elthein prōton — NA/TR · 11

- He replied…, “Elijah {does} indeed come first, [and] he restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected?
δὲ Ὁ ἔφη αὐτοῖς Ἠλίας μὲν ἐλθὼν πρῶτον ἀποκαθιστάνει πάντα πῶς καὶ γέγραπται ἵνα ἐπὶ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου πάθῃ πολλὰ καὶ ἐξουδενηθῇ de Ho ephē autois Ēlias men elthōn prōton apokathistanei panta pōs kai gegraptai hina epi ton Huion tou anthrōpou pathē polla kai exoudenēthē — NA/TR · 12

But I tell you that Elijah vvv has indeed come, and they have done to him whatever they wished, just as it is written about him.

The Boy with an Evil Spirit

[When] they returned to the [other] disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them.
Καὶ ἐλθόντες πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς εἶδον πολὺν ὄχλον περὶ αὐτοὺς καὶ γραμματεῖς συζητοῦντας πρὸς αὐτούς Kai elthontes pros tous mathētas eidon polyn ochlon peri autous kai grammateis syzētountas pros autous — NA/TR · 14

- As soon as all the people saw [Jesus], they were filled with awe and ran to greet Him.
καὶ εὐθὺς πᾶς ὁ ὄχλος ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐξεθαμβήθησαν καὶ προστρέχοντες ἠσπάζοντο αὐτόν kai euthys pas ho ochlos idontes auton exethambēthēsan kai prostrechontes ēspazonto auton — NA/TR · 15

“What are you disputing with them? He asked -.

- Someone in the crowd replied -, “Teacher, I brought… You my son, who has a spirit [that makes him] mute.
Καὶ εἷς ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλε ἤνεγκα πρὸς σέ μου τὸν υἱόν ἔχοντα πνεῦμα ἄλαλον Kai heis ek tou ochlou apekrithē autō Didaskale ēnenka pros se mou ton huion echonta pneuma alalon — NA/TR · 17

- Whenever… it seizes him, it throws him to the ground… He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked Your disciples to drive it out…, but vvv they were unable.
καὶ ὅπου ἐὰν καταλάβῃ αὐτὸν ῥήσσει αὐτόν καὶ ἀφρίζει καὶ τρίζει τοὺς ὀδόντας καὶ ξηραίνεται καὶ εἶπα σου τοῖς μαθηταῖς ἵνα ἐκβάλωσιν αὐτὸ καὶ οὐκ ἴσχυσαν kai hopou ean katalabē auton rhēssei auton kai aphrizei kai trizei tous odontas kai xērainetai kai eipa sou tois mathētais hina ekbalōsin auto kai ouk ischysan — NA/TR · 18

“O unbelieving generation! - [Jesus] replied. “How long… must I remain with you? How long… must I put up with you? Bring [the boy] to Me.

So they brought him -, and seeing [Jesus], the spirit immediately threw [the boy] into a convulsion… He fell to the ground [and] rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

- [Jesus] asked [the boy’s] father, “How long… {has} this been with him? “From childhood, - he said.

“- vvv It often throws him into [the] fire [or] into [the] water, trying to kill him. But if You can [do] anything, have compassion on us [and] help us.
καὶ πολλάκις ἔβαλεν αὐτὸν καὶ εἰς πῦρ καὶ εἰς ὕδατα ἵνα ἀπολέσῃ αὐτόν ἀλλ’ εἴ δύνῃ τι σπλαγχνισθεὶς ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς βοήθησον ἡμῖν kai pollakis ebalen auton kai eis pyr kai eis hydata hina apolesē auton all’ ei dynē ti splanchnistheis eph’ hēmas boēthēson hēmin — NA/TR · 22

“If You can? - echoed Jesus -. “All things are possible to him who believes!

Immediately the vvv boy’s father cried out -, “I do believe; help my unbelief!

When Jesus saw that a crowd had come running, He rebuked the unclean spirit. “[You] deaf and mute spirit, He said -, “I command you to come out and never enter… him {again}.
δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἰδὼν ὅτι ὄχλος ἐπισυντρέχει ἐπετίμησεν τῷ τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ πνεύματι κωφὸν καὶ Τὸ ἄλαλον πνεῦμα λέγων αὐτῷ ἐγὼ ἐπιτάσσω σοι ἔξελθε ἐξ αὐτοῦ καὶ μηκέτι εἰσέλθῃς εἰς αὐτόν de ho Iēsous Idōn hoti ochlos episyntrechei epetimēsen tō tō akathartō pneumati kōphon kai To alalon pneuma legōn autō egō epitassō soi exelthe ex autou kai mēketi eiselthēs eis auton — NA/TR · 25

After shrieking and convulsing him violently,… [the spirit] came out. [The boy] became like a corpse, so that many said -, “He is dead.

But Jesus took him by the hand [and] helped him to his feet…, and he stood up.

After [Jesus] had gone into [the] house, His disciples asked Him vvv privately, “Why couldn’t… we drive it out…?

- [Jesus] answered -, “This kind cannot… come out, except… by prayer.”

The Second Prediction of the Passion

Going on from there, they passed through Galilee. But vvv [Jesus] did not want anyone to know,

because He was teaching His disciples. He told them, “- The Son of Man will be delivered into [the] hands of men. They will kill Him, and after three days He will rise.

But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him [about it].

The Greatest in the Kingdom

Then they came to Capernaum. While [Jesus] was in the house, He asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?
Καὶ ἦλθον εἰς Καφαρναούμ Καὶ γενόμενος ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ ἐπηρώτα αὐτούς Τί διελογίζεσθε ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ Kai ēlthon eis Kapharnaoum Kai genomenos en tē oikia epērōta autous Ti dielogizesthe en tē hodō — NA/TR · 33

But they were silent, for on the way they had been arguing about… which [of them was] [the] greatest.

- Sitting down, [Jesus] called the Twelve and said -, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be [the] last of all and [the] servant of all.

Then vvv He had a little child {stand} vvv among them. Taking [the child] in His arms…, He said to them,

“Whoever… welcomes one of these little children in My name welcomes Me, and whoever… welcomes Me welcomes not only Me, but the [One] who sent Me.

- John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone else… driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him, because… he does not accompany us.

“{Do} not stop him, - Jesus replied. “For no one who performs a miracle in My name can turn around and speak evil of Me.

For whoever is not against us is for us.
γὰρ ὃς ἔστιν οὐκ καθ’ ἡμῶν ἐστιν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν gar hos estin ouk kath’ hēmōn estin hyper hēmōn — NA/TR · 40

Indeed, if anyone… gives you [even] a cup of water because you bear… the name of Christ, truly I tell you, vvv vvv he will never lose his reward.
γὰρ Ὃς ἂν ποτίσῃ ὑμᾶς ποτήριον ὕδατος ὅτι ἐστε ἐν ὀνόματι Χριστοῦ ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσῃ αὐτοῦ τὸν μισθὸν gar Hos an potisē hymas potērion hydatos hoti este en onomati Christou amēn legō hymin hoti ou mē apolesē autou ton misthon — NA/TR · 41
Temptations and Trespasses

But if anyone… causes one of these little ones who believe in Me {to stumble}, it would be better for him to have… a large millstone hung around his neck and to be thrown into the sea.
Καὶ ὃς ἂν σκανδαλίσῃ ἕνα τούτων τῶν μικρῶν τῶν πιστευόντων εἰς ἐμέ ἐστιν καλόν αὐτῷ εἰ μᾶλλον ὀνικὸς μύλος περίκειται περὶ αὐτοῦ τὸν τράχηλον καὶ βέβληται εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν Kai hos an skandalisē hena toutōn tōn mikrōn tōn pisteuontōn eis eme estin kalon autō ei mallon onikos mylos perikeitai peri autou ton trachēlon kai beblētai eis tēn thalassan — NA/TR · 42

- If your hand causes you to sin…, cut it off… It is better for you to enter… life crippled than to have two hands [and] go into hell, into the unquenchable fire.
Καὶ ἐὰν σου ἡ χείρ σκανδαλίζῃ σε ἀπόκοψον αὐτήν ἐστίν καλόν σε εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν ζωὴν κυλλὸν ἢ ἔχοντα δύο τὰς χεῖρας ἀπελθεῖν εἰς τὴν γέενναν εἰς τὸ τὸ ἄσβεστον πῦρ Kai ean sou hē cheir skandalizē se apokopson autēn estin kalon se eiselthein eis tēn zōēn kyllon ē echonta dyo tas cheiras apelthein eis tēn geennan eis to to asbeston pyr — NA/TR · 43

- If your foot causes you to sin…, cut it off… It is better for you to enter… life lame than to have two feet [and] be thrown into hell.
καὶ ἐὰν σου ὁ πούς σκανδαλίζῃ σε ἀπόκοψον αὐτόν ἐστίν καλόν σε εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν ζωὴν χωλὸν ἢ ἔχοντα τοὺς δύο πόδας βληθῆναι εἰς τὴν γέενναν kai ean sou ho pous skandalizē se apokopson auton estin kalon se eiselthein eis tēn zōēn chōlon ē echonta tous dyo podas blēthēnai eis tēn geennan — NA/TR · 45

And if your eye causes you to sin…, pluck it out… It is better for you to enter… the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes [and] be thrown into hell,
καὶ ἐὰν σου ὁ ὀφθαλμός σκανδαλίζῃ σε ἔκβαλε αὐτόν ἐστιν καλόν σέ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ μονόφθαλμον ἢ ἔχοντα δύο ὀφθαλμοὺς βληθῆναι εἰς τὴν γέενναν kai ean sou ho ophthalmos skandalizē se ekbale auton estin kalon se eiselthein eis tēn basileian tou Theou monophthalmon ē echonta dyo ophthalmous blēthēnai eis tēn geennan — NA/TR · 47

where ‘their worm never dies, and the fire vvv is never quenched.’
