Chapter 1
Dedication to Theophilus
1
- Many have undertaken to compose an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,

Therefore, having carefully investigated… everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,

Gabriel Foretells John’s Birth
5
In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to [the] priestly division of Abijah, and [whose] wife vvv vvv vvv vvv Elizabeth [was] a descendant of Aaron.
ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Ἡρῴδου βασιλέως τῆς Ἰουδαίας Ἐγένετο τις ἱερεύς ὀνόματι Ζαχαρίας ἐξ ἐφημερίας Ἀβιά καὶ αὐτῷ γυνὴ καὶ αὐτῆς τὸ ὄνομα Ἐλισάβετ ἐκ τῶν θυγατέρων Ἀαρών en tais hēmerais Hērōdou basileōs tēs Ioudaias Egeneto tis hiereus onomati Zacharias ex ephēmerias Abia kai autō gynē kai autēs to onoma Elisabet ek tōn thygaterōn Aarōn — NA/TR · 5

- Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and decrees of the Lord.

But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well along in - years.

One day… while [Zechariah’s] division vvv vvv was on duty [and] he was serving as priest before God,
