Chapter 12

The Leaven of the Pharisees

In the meantime, a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling one another. [Jesus] began to speak first to His disciples: “Beware… of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

Ἐν οἷς τοῦ ὄχλου τῶν μυριάδων ἐπισυναχθεισῶν ὥστε καταπατεῖν ἀλλήλους ἤρξατο λέγειν πρῶτον πρὸς αὐτοῦ τοὺς μαθητὰς Προσέχετε ἑαυτοῖς ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων ἥτις ἐστὶν ὑπόκρισις En hois tou ochlou tōn myriadōn episynachtheisōn hōste katapatein allēlous ērxato legein prōton pros autou tous mathētas Prosechete heautois apo tēs zymēs tōn Pharisaiōn hētis estin hypokrisis — NA/TR · 1

[There] is nothing concealed that vvv will not be disclosed, and [nothing] hidden that will not be made known.

δὲ ἐστὶν οὐδὲν συγκεκαλυμμένον ὃ οὐκ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται καὶ κρυπτὸν ὃ οὐ γνωσθήσεται de estin ouden synkekalymmenon ho ouk apokalyphthēsetai kai krypton ho ou gnōsthēsetai — NA/TR · 2

vvv What… you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered… in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the housetops.

Fear God Alone

  • I tell you, My friends, vvv do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that vvv can do no more.

δὲ Λέγω ὑμῖν μου τοῖς φίλοις μὴ φοβηθῆτε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποκτεινόντων τὸ σῶμα καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα μὴ ἐχόντων ποιῆσαι τι περισσότερόν de Legō hymin mou tois philois mē phobēthēte apo tōn apokteinontōn to sōma kai meta tauta mē echontōn poiēsai ti perissoteron — NA/TR · 4

But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear the [One who], after [you] have been killed, has authority to throw [you] into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him!

{Are} not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.

[And even] the very hairs of your head vvv are all numbered. vvv [So] do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Confessing Christ

  • I tell you, everyone who confesses… Me before men, the Son of Man vvv will also confess… him before the angels of God.

δὲ Λέγω ὑμῖν πᾶς ὃς ἂν ὁμολογήσῃ ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καὶ ὁμολογήσει ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ Θεοῦ de Legō hymin pas hos an homologēsē en emoi emprosthen tōn anthrōpōn ho Huios tou anthrōpou kai homologēsei en autō emprosthen tōn angelōn tou Theou — NA/TR · 8

But whoever denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven…, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit vvv will not be forgiven.

  • When you are brought before synagogues, - rulers, and authorities, {do} not worry about how… to defend yourselves or what to say.

δὲ Ὅταν ὑμᾶς εἰσφέρωσιν ἐπὶ τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας μὴ μεριμνήσητε πῶς ἢ τί ἀπολογήσησθε ἢ τί εἴπητε de Hotan hymas eispherōsin epi tas synagōgas kai tas archas kai tas exousias mē merimnēsēte pōs ē ti apologēsēsthe ē ti eipēte — NA/TR · 11

For at that time the Holy Spirit will teach you what you should say.

The Parable of the Rich Fool

  • Someone in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell… my brother to divide the inheritance with me.

But [Jesus] replied…, “Man, who appointed Me judge or executor between you?

And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every [form of] greed, for one’s… life vvv does not consist in the abundance of vvv his possessions.

Then He told… them a parable -: “The ground of a certain rich man produced an abundance.

So he thought to himself -, ‘What shall I do, since I have nowhere… to store my crops?

Then he said, ‘This [is what] I will do: I will tear down my barns and will build bigger [ones], and there I will store up all my grain and [my] goods.

Then I will say to myself…, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, [and] be merry!

But God said to him, ‘[You] fool! This very night your life will be required of you. Then who will own what you have accumulated?

This is how [it will be for] anyone who stores up treasure for himself but vvv is not rich toward God.

Do Not Worry

Then [Jesus] said to His disciples, “Therefore… I tell you, {do} not worry about your life, what you will eat, [or] about your body, what you will wear.

δὲ Εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοῦ τοὺς μαθητὰς Διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ τί φάγητε μηδὲ τῷ ὑμῶν σώματι τί ἐνδύσησθε de Eipen pros autou tous mathētas Dia touto legō hymin mē merimnate tē psychē ti phagēte mēde tō hymōn sōmati ti endysēsthe — NA/TR · 22

For life is more than food, and the body [more] than clothes.

γὰρ ἡ ψυχὴ ἐστιν πλεῖόν τῆς τροφῆς καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος gar hē psychē estin pleion tēs trophēs kai to sōma tou endymatos — NA/TR · 23

Consider the ravens: vvv They do not sow [or] reap, they have no storehouse [or] barn; yet God feeds them. How much more vvv valuable you are than the birds!

  • Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

δὲ τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν μεριμνῶν δύναται προσθεῖναι πῆχυν ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τὴν ἡλικίαν de tis ex hymōn merimnōn dynatai prostheinai pēchyn epi autou tēn hēlikian — NA/TR · 25

So if vvv you cannot [do] such a small thing, why do you worry about the rest?

Consider how the lilies grow: vvv They do not labor [or] spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these.

  • If that is how God clothes the grass of [the] field, which is [here] today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much [more will He clothe] you, O [you] of little faith!

And vvv {do} not be concerned about what you will eat [or] drink. {Do} not worry about [it].

For the Gentiles of the world strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them.

But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added unto you.

Treasures in Heaven

{Do} not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide yourselves [with] purses [that will] not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief approaches [and] no moth destroys.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Readiness at Any Hour

Be dressed for service… and {keep} [your] lamps burning.

Then you [ will be ] like [servants] waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks, they can open [the door] for him at once.

καὶ ὑμεῖς ὅμοιοι ἀνθρώποις προσδεχομένοις ἑαυτῶν τὸν κύριον πότε ἀναλύσῃ ἐκ τῶν γάμων ἵνα ἐλθόντος καὶ κρούσαντος ἀνοίξωσιν αὐτῷ εὐθέως kai hymeis homoioi anthrōpois prosdechomenois heautōn ton kyrion pote analysē ek tōn gamōn hina elthontos kai krousantos anoixōsin autō eutheōs — NA/TR · 36

Blessed [are] those servants whom the master finds on watch when he returns. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve and… will have them recline at the table, and he [himself] will come [and] wait on them.

Even if he comes in the second or - third watch of the night and finds [them] alert, those [servants] will be blessed.

But understand this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, vvv vvv he would not have let his house be broken into.

You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour vvv you do not expect.

“Lord, - said Peter, “are You addressing this parable to us, or to everyone else as well?

And the Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful [and] wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his [servants] to give [them] [their] portion at the proper time?

Blessed [is] that servant whose - master finds him doing so when he returns.

Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge… of all his possessions.

But suppose that servant says in his heart, ‘My master will be a long time in coming, and he begins to beat the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk.

δὲ Ἐὰν ἐκεῖνος ὁ δοῦλος εἴπῃ ἐν αὐτοῦ τῇ καρδίᾳ μου ὁ κύριός Χρονίζει ἔρχεσθαι καὶ ἄρξηται τύπτειν τοὺς παῖδας καὶ τὰς παιδίσκας τε ἐσθίειν καὶ πίνειν καὶ μεθύσκεσθαι de Ean ekeinos ho doulos eipē en autou tē kardia mou ho kyrios Chronizei erchesthai kai arxētai typtein tous paidas kai tas paidiskas te esthiein kai pinein kai methyskesthai — NA/TR · 45

The master of that servant will come on a day vvv vvv he does not expect and at an hour vvv vvv he does not anticipate. Then he will cut him to pieces… and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

  • That servant who knows his master’s will [but] vvv does not get ready [or] follow… his instructions will be beaten with many [blows].

δὲ Ἐκεῖνος ὁ δοῦλος ὁ γνοὺς τοῦ αὐτοῦ κυρίου τὸ θέλημα καὶ μὴ ἑτοιμάσας ἢ ποιήσας πρὸς αὐτοῦ τὸ θέλημα δαρήσεται πολλάς de Ekeinos ho doulos ho gnous tou autou kyriou to thelēma kai mē hetoimasas ē poiēsas pros autou to thelēma darēsetai pollas — NA/TR · 47

But the [one who] vvv unknowingly does [things] worthy of punishment will be beaten with few [blows]. [From] everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded…

Reconciling with an Adversary
