Chapter 16

The Parable of the Shrewd Manager

vvv vvv [Jesus] also said to [His] disciples, “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of… wasting his possessions.

δὲ καὶ Ἔλεγεν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητάς ἦν τις πλούσιος Ἄνθρωπός ὃς εἶχεν οἰκονόμον καὶ διεβλήθη αὐτῷ ὡς οὗτος διασκορπίζων αὐτοῦ τὰ ὑπάρχοντα de kai Elegen pros tous mathētas ēn tis plousios Anthrōpos hos eichen oikonomon kai dieblēthē autō hōs houtos diaskorpizōn autou ta hyparchonta — NA/TR · 1

So he called him in to ask -, ‘What [is] this I hear about you? Turn in an account of your management, for you cannot… be manager any longer.

καὶ φωνήσας αὐτὸν εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τί τοῦτο ἀκούω περὶ σοῦ ἀπόδος τὸν λόγον τῆς σου οἰκονομίας γὰρ δύνῃ οὐ οἰκονομεῖν ἔτι kai phōnēsas auton eipen autō Ti touto akouō peri sou apodos ton logon tēs sou oikonomias gar dynē ou oikonomein eti — NA/TR · 2

  • The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, now that my master is taking away my [position]? vvv I am too weak to dig [and] too ashamed to beg.

δὲ ὁ οἰκονόμος Εἶπεν ἐν ἑαυτῷ Τί ποιήσω ὅτι μου ὁ κύριός ἀφαιρεῖται ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ τὴν οἰκονομίαν οὐκ ἰσχύω σκάπτειν αἰσχύνομαι ἐπαιτεῖν de ho oikonomos Eipen en heautō Ti poiēsō hoti mou ho kyrios aphaireitai ap’ emou tēn oikonomian ouk ischyō skaptein aischynomai epaitein — NA/TR · 3

I know what I will do so that after my removal from management, [people] will welcome me into their homes.

ἔγνων τί ποιήσω ἵνα ὅταν μετασταθῶ ἐκ τῆς οἰκονομίας δέξωνταί με εἰς ἑαυτῶν τοὺς οἴκους egnōn ti poiēsō hina hotan metastathō ek tēs oikonomias dexōntai me eis heautōn tous oikous — NA/TR · 4

And he called in each one of his master’s debtors. ‘How much do you owe… my master? he asked the first.

‘A hundred [measures] of olive oil,’ - he answered. ‘Take your bill, - said [the manager] -, ‘sit down quickly, [and] write fifty.

Then he asked another, ‘And how much {do} you owe?’ ‘A hundred [measures] of wheat,’ - he replied. ‘Take your bill and write eighty, he told him.

  • The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the sons of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than [are] the sons of light.

Καὶ ὁ κύριος ἐπῄνεσεν τὸν τῆς ἀδικίας οἰκονόμον ὅτι ἐποίησεν φρονίμως ὅτι οἱ υἱοὶ τούτου τοῦ αἰῶνος εἰσιν φρονιμώτεροι εἰς τὴν ἑαυτῶν τὴν γενεὰν ὑπὲρ τοὺς υἱοὺς τοῦ φωτὸς Kai ho kyrios epēnesen ton tēs adikias oikonomon hoti epoiēsen phronimōs hoti hoi huioi toutou tou aiōnos eisin phronimōteroi eis tēn heautōn tēn genean hyper tous huious tou phōtos — NA/TR · 8

  • I tell you, use - worldly wealth to make friends for yourselves so that when it is gone, they will welcome you into eternal dwellings.

Καὶ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐκ τοῦ τῆς ἀδικίας μαμωνᾶ ποιήσατε φίλους ἑαυτοῖς ἵνα ὅταν ἐκλίπῃ δέξωνται ὑμᾶς εἰς τὰς αἰωνίους σκηνάς Kai egō legō hymin ek tou tēs adikias mamōna poiēsate philous heautois hina hotan eklipē dexōntai hymas eis tas aiōnious skēnas — NA/TR · 9

Whoever [is] faithful with very little will also {be} faithful with much, and whoever [is] dishonest with very little will also {be} dishonest with much.

Ὁ πιστὸς ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ ἐστιν καὶ πιστός ἐν πολλῷ καὶ ὁ ἄδικος ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ ἐστιν καὶ ἄδικός ἐν πολλῷ Ho pistos en elachistō estin kai pistos en pollō kai ho adikos en elachistō estin kai adikos en pollō — NA/TR · 10

So if vvv you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will entrust you [with] true [riches]?

οὖν εἰ οὐκ ἐγένεσθε πιστοὶ ἐν ἀδίκῳ τῷ μαμωνᾷ τίς πιστεύσει ὑμῖν τὸ ἀληθινὸν oun ei ouk egenesthe pistoi en adikō tō mamōna tis pisteusei hymin to alēthinon — NA/TR · 11

And if vvv you have not been faithful with the [belongings] of another, who will give you belongings of your own?

καὶ εἰ οὐκ ἐγένεσθε πιστοὶ ἐν τῷ ἀλλοτρίῳ τίς δώσει ὑμῖν τὸ ὑμέτερον kai ei ouk egenesthe pistoi en tō allotriō tis dōsei hymin to hymeteron — NA/TR · 12

No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to [the] one and despise the other. vvv You cannot serve [both] God and money.

Οὐδεὶς οἰκέτης δύναται δουλεύειν δυσὶ κυρίοις γὰρ ἢ μισήσει τὸν ἕνα καὶ ἀγαπήσει τὸν ἕτερον ἢ ἀνθέξεται ἑνὸς καὶ καταφρονήσει τοῦ ἑτέρου οὐ δύνασθε δουλεύειν Θεῷ καὶ μαμωνᾷ Oudeis oiketēs dynatai douleuein dysi kyriois gar ē misēsei ton hena kai agapēsei ton heteron ē anthexetai henos kai kataphronēsei tou heterou ou dynasthe douleuein Theō kai mamōna — NA/TR · 13

The Law and the Prophets

  • The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all [of this] and were scoffing at [Jesus].

δὲ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὑπάρχοντες φιλάργυροι Ἤκουον πάντα ταῦτα καὶ ἐξεμυκτήριζον αὐτόν de hoi Pharisaioi hyparchontes philargyroi Ēkouon panta tauta kai exemyktērizon auton — NA/TR · 14

So He said to them, “You are the [ones who] justify [yourselves] before men, but God knows your hearts. For what [is] prized among men [is] detestable before God.

καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὑμεῖς ἐστε οἱ δικαιοῦντες ἑαυτοὺς ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων δὲ ὁ Θεὸς γινώσκει ὑμῶν τὰς καρδίας ὅτι τὸ ὑψηλὸν ἐν ἀνθρώποις βδέλυγμα ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ kai eipen autois Hymeis este hoi dikaiountes heautous enōpion tōn anthrōpōn de ho Theos ginōskei hymōn tas kardias hoti to hypsēlon en anthrōpois bdelygma enōpion tou Theou — NA/TR · 15

The Law and the Prophets [were proclaimed] until John. Since that time, the {gospel} of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.

Ὁ νόμος καὶ οἱ προφῆται μέχρι Ἰωάννου ἀπὸ τότε ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ εὐαγγελίζεται καὶ πᾶς βιάζεται εἰς αὐτὴν Ho nomos kai hoi prophētai mechri Iōannou apo tote hē basileia tou Theou euangelizetai kai pas biazetai eis autēn — NA/TR · 16

But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for a single stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.

δέ ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν παρελθεῖν ἢ μίαν κεραίαν πεσεῖν τοῦ νόμου de estin eukopōteron ton ouranon kai tēn gēn parelthein ē mian keraian pesein tou nomou — NA/TR · 17

Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another [woman] commits adultery, and he who marries a divorced woman… commits adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

Now there was a rich man dressed in purple and fine linen, who lived each day in joyous… splendor.

δέ ἦν τις πλούσιος Ἄνθρωπος καὶ ἐνεδιδύσκετο πορφύραν καὶ βύσσον εὐφραινόμενος καθ’ ἡμέραν λαμπρῶς de ēn tis plousios Anthrōpos kai enedidysketo porphyran kai bysson euphrainomenos kath’ hēmeran lamprōs — NA/TR · 19

And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores

δέ τις πτωχὸς ὀνόματι Λάζαρος ἐβέβλητο πρὸς αὐτοῦ τὸν πυλῶνα εἱλκωμένος de tis ptōchos onomati Lazaros ebeblēto pros autou ton pylōna heilkōmenos — NA/TR · 20

and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the vvv rich man’s table. Even the dogs came [and] licked his sores.

καὶ ἐπιθυμῶν χορτασθῆναι ἀπὸ τῶν πιπτόντων ἀπὸ τῆς τοῦ πλουσίου τραπέζης ἀλλὰ καὶ οἱ κύνες ἐρχόμενοι ἐπέλειχον αὐτοῦ τὰ ἕλκη kai epithymōn chortasthēnai apo tōn piptontōn apo tēs tou plousiou trapezēs alla kai hoi kynes erchomenoi epeleichon autou ta helkē — NA/TR · 21

One day… the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died and was buried.

δὲ Ἐγένετο τὸν πτωχὸν ἀποθανεῖν καὶ αὐτὸν ἀπενεχθῆναι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀγγέλων εἰς τὸν Ἀβραάμ κόλπον δὲ ὁ πλούσιος καὶ ἀπέθανεν καὶ ἐτάφη de Egeneto ton ptōchon apothanein kai auton apenechthēnai hypo tōn angelōn eis ton Abraam kolpon de ho plousios kai apethanen kai etaphē — NA/TR · 22

  • In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up… [and] saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side.

καὶ ἐν τῷ ᾅδῃ ὑπάρχων ἐν βασάνοις ἐπάρας αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὁρᾷ Ἀβραὰμ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν καὶ Λάζαρον ἐν αὐτοῦ τοῖς κόλποις kai en tō hadē hyparchōn en basanois eparas autou tous ophthalmous hora Abraam apo makrothen kai Lazaron en autou tois kolpois — NA/TR · 23

So he cried out…, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.

Καὶ αὐτὸς φωνήσας εἶπεν Πάτερ Ἀβραάμ ἐλέησόν με καὶ πέμψον Λάζαρον ἵνα βάψῃ τὸ ἄκρον τοῦ αὐτοῦ δακτύλου ὕδατος καὶ καταψύξῃ μου τὴν γλῶσσάν ὅτι ὀδυνῶμαι ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ φλογὶ Kai autos phōnēsas eipen Pater Abraam eleēson me kai pempson Lazaron hina bapsē to akron tou autou daktylou hydatos kai katapsyxē mou tēn glōssan hoti odynōmai en tautē tē phlogi — NA/TR · 24

But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good [things], [while] Lazarus [received] bad [things]. But now he is comforted here, while you are in agony.

δὲ Ἀβραάμ Εἶπεν Τέκνον μνήσθητι ὅτι ἐν σου τῇ ζωῇ ἀπέλαβες σου ἀγαθά τὰ καὶ Λάζαρος ὁμοίως τὰ κακά δὲ νῦν παρακαλεῖται ὧδε δὲ σὺ ὀδυνᾶσαι de Abraam Eipen Teknon mnēsthēti hoti en sou tē zōē apelabes sou agatha ta kai Lazaros homoiōs ta kaka de nyn parakaleitai hōde de sy odynasai — NA/TR · 25

And besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that [even] those who wish vvv cannot cross from here to you, nor can [anyone] cross from there to us.

καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τούτοις μέγα χάσμα ἐστήρικται μεταξὺ ἡμῶν καὶ ὑμῶν ὅπως οἱ θέλοντες μὴ δύνωνται διαβῆναι ἔνθεν πρὸς ὑμᾶς μηδὲ διαπερῶσιν ἐκεῖθεν πρὸς ἡμᾶς kai en pasi toutois mega chasma estēriktai metaxy hēmōn kai hymōn hopōs hoi thelontes mē dynōntai diabēnai enthen pros hymas mēde diaperōsin ekeithen pros hēmas — NA/TR · 26

‘Then I beg you, father, he said, ‘send [Lazarus] to my father’s house,

for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they vvv vvv will not also end up in this place of torment.

γὰρ ἔχω πέντε ἀδελφούς ὅπως διαμαρτύρηται αὐτοῖς ἵνα αὐτοὶ μὴ καὶ ἔλθωσιν εἰς τοῦτον τὸν τόπον τῆς βασάνου gar echō pente adelphous hopōs diamartyrētai autois hina autoi mē kai elthōsin eis touton ton topon tēs basanou — NA/TR · 28

But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let [your brothers] listen to them.

δὲ Ἀβραάμ Λέγει Ἔχουσι Μωϋσέα καὶ τοὺς προφήτας ἀκουσάτωσαν αὐτῶν de Abraam Legei Echousi Mōusea kai tous prophētas akousatōsan autōn — NA/TR · 29

‘No, father Abraham, - he said, ‘but if someone is sent to them from [the] dead, they will repent.

Οὐχί πάτερ Ἀβραάμ δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν ἀλλ’ ἐάν τις πορευθῇ πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ νεκρῶν μετανοήσουσιν Ouchi pater Abraam de Ho eipen all’ ean tis poreuthē pros autous apo nekrōn metanoēsousin — NA/TR · 30

Then [Abraham] said to him, ‘If vvv they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, vvv they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from [the] dead.
