Chapter 24
The Resurrection
1
- On the first [day] of the week, very early in the morning, [the women] came to the tomb, bringing [the] spices they had prepared.
δὲ Τῇ μιᾷ τῶν σαββάτων βαθέως ὄρθρου ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὸ μνῆμα φέρουσαι ἀρώματα ἃ ἡτοίμασαν de Tē mia tōn sabbatōn batheōs orthrou ēlthon epi to mnēma pherousai arōmata ha hētoimasan — NA/TR · 1

- They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
δὲ εὗρον τὸν λίθον ἀποκεκυλισμένον ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου de heuron ton lithon apokekylismenon apo tou mnēmeiou — NA/TR · 2

but when they entered, vvv they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
δὲ εἰσελθοῦσαι οὐχ εὗρον τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ de eiselthousai ouch heuron to sōma tou Kyriou Iēsou — NA/TR · 3

vvv vvv While they were puzzling over this, suddenly two men in radiant apparel stood beside them.
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν αὐτὰς τῷ ἀπορεῖσθαι περὶ τούτου καὶ ἰδοὺ δύο ἄνδρες ἐν ἀστραπτούσῃ ἐσθῆτι ἐπέστησαν αὐταῖς kai egeneto en autas tō aporeisthai peri toutou kai idou dyo andres en astraptousē esthēti epestēsan autais — NA/TR · 4

As [the women] bowed [their] faces to the ground vvv in terror, [the two men] asked… them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?
δὲ αὐτῶν καὶ κλινουσῶν τὰ πρόσωπα εἰς τὴν γῆν γενομένων ἐμφόβων εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτάς Τί ζητεῖτε τὸν ζῶντα μετὰ τῶν νεκρῶν de autōn kai klinousōn ta prosōpa eis tēn gēn genomenōn emphobōn eipan pros autas Ti zēteite ton zōnta meta tōn nekrōn — NA/TR · 5

He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you while He was still in Galilee:
ἔστιν οὐκ ὧδε ἀλλὰ ἠγέρθη μνήσθητε ὡς ἐλάλησεν ὑμῖν ὢν ἔτι ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ estin ouk hōde alla ēgerthē mnēsthēte hōs elalēsen hymin ōn eti en tē Galilaia — NA/TR · 6

- ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into [the] hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.

Then they remembered His words.
Καὶ ἐμνήσθησαν αὐτοῦ τῶν ῥημάτων Kai emnēsthēsan autou tōn rhēmatōn — NA/TR · 8

And when they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
καὶ ὑποστρέψασαι ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου ἀπήγγειλαν πάντα ταῦτα τοῖς ἕνδεκα καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς λοιποῖς kai hypostrepsasai apo tou mnēmeiou apēngeilan panta tauta tois hendeka kai pasin tois loipois — NA/TR · 9

- It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the [mother] of James, and the other women with them [who] told [this] to the apostles.
δὲ ἦσαν ἡ Μαρία Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Ἰωάννα καὶ Μαρία ἡ Ἰακώβου καὶ αἱ λοιπαὶ σὺν αὐταῖς ἔλεγον ταῦτα πρὸς τοὺς ἀποστόλους de ēsan hē Maria Magdalēnē kai Iōanna kai Maria hē Iakōbou kai hai loipai syn autais elegon tauta pros tous apostolous — NA/TR · 10

But their words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe [the women].
καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ῥήματα ἐφάνησαν ὡσεὶ λῆρος ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν καὶ ἠπίστουν αὐταῖς kai tauta ta rhēmata ephanēsan hōsei lēros enōpion autōn kai ēpistoun autais — NA/TR · 11

- Peter, however, got up [and] ran to the tomb. And [after] bending down [and] seeing only the linen cloths, he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

The Road to Emmaus

vvv vvv vvv That same day two of them were going to a village vvv called Emmaus, about seven miles… from Jerusalem.
Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐν τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ δύο ἐξ αὐτῶν ἦσαν πορευόμενοι εἰς κώμην ᾗ ὄνομα Ἐμμαοῦς ἑξήκοντα σταδίους ἀπέχουσαν ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλήμ Kai idou en tē autē hēmera dyo ex autōn ēsan poreuomenoi eis kōmēn hē onoma Emmaous hexēkonta stadious apechousan apo Ierousalēm — NA/TR · 13

- They were talking with each other about everything… that had happened.
καὶ αὐτοὶ ὡμίλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους περὶ πάντων τούτων τῶν συμβεβηκότων kai autoi hōmiloun pros allēlous peri pantōn toutōn tōn symbebēkotōn — NA/TR · 14

And as they talked and deliberated, Jesus Himself came up [and] walked along with them.
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν αὐτοὺς τῷ ὁμιλεῖν καὶ συζητεῖν καὶ Ἰησοῦς αὐτὸς ἐγγίσας συνεπορεύετο αὐτοῖς kai egeneto en autous tō homilein kai syzētein kai Iēsous autos engisas syneporeueto autois — NA/TR · 15

But their eyes were kept… from recognizing Him.

- He asked them, “What vvv vvv vvv vvv are you discussing so intently… as you walk along? They stood still, with sadness on their faces.

- One [of them], named Cleopas, asked… Him, “{Are} You the only visitor to Jerusalem [who] {does} not know the things that have happened vvv [there] in recent days?

“What things? He asked -. “The events involving Jesus of Nazareth, - they answered -. “[This] man was a prophet, powerful in speech and action before God and all the people.

- [Our] chief priests and - rulers delivered Him up… to [the] sentence of death, and they crucified Him.
τε ὅπως οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ ἡμῶν ἄρχοντες παρέδωκαν αὐτὸν εἰς κρίμα θανάτου καὶ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν te hopōs hoi archiereis kai hoi hēmōn archontes paredōkan auton eis krima thanatou kai estaurōsan auton — NA/TR · 20

But we were hoping He was the [One who] would redeem Israel. And besides all [this], [it] is [the] third day since… these things took place.
δὲ ἡμεῖς ἠλπίζομεν ὅτι αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ μέλλων λυτροῦσθαι τὸν Ἰσραήλ ἀλλά καὶ γε σὺν πᾶσιν τούτοις ταύτην ἄγει τρίτην ἡμέραν ἀφ’ οὗ ταῦτα ἐγένετο de hēmeis ēlpizomen hoti autos estin ho mellōn lytrousthai ton Israēl alla kai ge syn pasin toutois tautēn agei tritēn hēmeran aph’ hou tauta egeneto — NA/TR · 21

Furthermore -, some of our women astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning,
Ἀλλὰ καὶ τινες ἐξ ἡμῶν γυναῖκές ἐξέστησαν ἡμᾶς γενόμεναι ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον ὀρθριναὶ Alla kai tines ex hēmōn gynaikes exestēsan hēmas genomenai epi to mnēmeion orthrinai — NA/TR · 22

but vvv they did not find His body. They came [and] told [us] they had seen a vision of angels, who said that [Jesus] was alive.
καὶ μὴ εὑροῦσαι αὐτοῦ τὸ σῶμα ἦλθον λέγουσαι ἑωρακέναι καὶ ὀπτασίαν ἀγγέλων οἳ λέγουσιν αὐτὸν ζῆν kai mē heurousai autou to sōma ēlthon legousai heōrakenai kai optasian angelōn hoi legousin auton zēn — NA/TR · 23

Then some of our companions… went to the tomb and found [it] just as the women had described. But Him vvv they did not see.
καὶ τινες τῶν σὺν ἡμῖν ἀπῆλθόν ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ εὗρον οὕτως καθὼς αἱ γυναῖκες καὶ εἶπον δὲ αὐτὸν οὐκ εἶδον kai tines tōn syn hēmin apēlthon epi to mnēmeion kai heuron houtōs kathōs hai gynaikes kai eipon de auton ouk eidon — NA/TR · 24

Then [Jesus] said to them, “O foolish [ones], and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
Καὶ αὐτὸς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ὦ ἀνόητοι καὶ βραδεῖς τῇ καρδίᾳ τοῦ πιστεύειν ἐπὶ πᾶσιν οἷς οἱ προφῆται ἐλάλησαν Kai autos eipen pros autous Ō anoētoi kai bradeis tē kardia tou pisteuein epi pasin hois hoi prophētai elalēsan — NA/TR · 25

vvv Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then to enter… His glory?

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what [ was written ] in all the Scriptures about Himself.
καὶ ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ Μωϋσέως καὶ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν προφητῶν διερμήνευσεν αὐτοῖς τὰ ἐν πάσαις ταῖς γραφαῖς περὶ ἑαυτοῦ kai arxamenos apo Mōuseōs kai apo pantōn tōn prophētōn diermēneusen autois ta en pasais tais graphais peri heautou — NA/TR · 27

As they approached… the village where they were headed, He seemed to be going farther.

But they pleaded with Him…, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and… the day is almost over. So He went in to stay with them.

While… He was reclining [at the table] with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke [it], [and] gave [it] to them.
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν αὐτὸν τῷ κατακλιθῆναι μετ’ αὐτῶν λαβὼν τὸν ἄρτον εὐλόγησεν καὶ κλάσας ἐπεδίδου αὐτοῖς kai egeneto en auton tō kataklithēnai met’ autōn labōn ton arton eulogēsen kai klasas epedidou autois — NA/TR · 30

Then their eyes were opened and they recognized [Jesus]— and He vvv disappeared from [their sight].

- They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road [and] opened the Scriptures to us?

And they got up [that] very hour [and] returned to Jerusalem. [There] they found the Eleven and those with them, gathered together

[and] saying -, “The Lord vvv has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon!

Then [the two] told what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized [Jesus] in the breaking of the bread.
Καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐξηγοῦντο τὰ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ καὶ ὡς αὐτοῖς ἐγνώσθη ἐν τῇ κλάσει τοῦ ἄρτου Kai autoi exēgounto ta en tē hodō kai hōs autois egnōsthē en tē klasei tou artou — NA/TR · 35
Jesus Appears to the Disciples

While they were describing these [events], [Jesus] Himself stood vvv among them and said…, “Peace [be] with you.
δὲ αὐτῶν λαλούντων Ταῦτα αὐτὸς ἔστη ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Εἰρήνη ὑμῖν de autōn lalountōn Tauta autos estē en mesō autōn kai legei autois Eirēnē hymin — NA/TR · 36

But they were startled and vvv frightened, thinking they had seen a spirit.
δὲ πτοηθέντες καὶ γενόμενοι ἔμφοβοι ἐδόκουν θεωρεῖν πνεῦμα de ptoēthentes kai genomenoi emphoboi edokoun theōrein pneuma — NA/TR · 37

“Why are you troubled, [Jesus] asked…, “and why… {do} doubts arise in your hearts?

Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself. Touch Me and see— for a spirit {does} not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.
ἴδετε μου τὰς χεῖράς καὶ μου τοὺς πόδας ὅτι εἰμι ἐγώ αὐτός ψηλαφήσατέ με καὶ ἴδετε ὅτι πνεῦμα οὐκ ἔχει σάρκα καὶ ὀστέα καθὼς θεωρεῖτε ἐμὲ ἔχοντα idete mou tas cheiras kai mou tous podas hoti eimi egō autos psēlaphēsate me kai idete hoti pneuma ouk echei sarka kai ostea kathōs theōreite eme echonta — NA/TR · 39

And [when] He had said this, He showed them [His] hands and feet.
καὶ εἰπὼν τοῦτο ἔδειξεν αὐτοῖς τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τοὺς πόδας kai eipōn touto edeixen autois tas cheiras kai tous podas — NA/TR · 40

While they vvv were still in disbelief because of [their] joy and amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?
δὲ αὐτῶν Ἔτι ἀπιστούντων ἀπὸ τῆς χαρᾶς καὶ θαυμαζόντων εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἔχετέ τι ἐνθάδε βρώσιμον de autōn Eti apistountōn apo tēs charas kai thaumazontōn eipen autois Echete ti enthade brōsimon — NA/TR · 41

So they gave Him a piece of broiled fish,
δὲ οἱ ἐπέδωκαν αὐτῷ μέρος ὀπτοῦ ἰχθύος de hoi epedōkan autō meros optou ichthyos — NA/TR · 42

and He took [it] [and] ate [it] in front of them.
καὶ λαβὼν ἔφαγεν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν kai labōn ephagen enōpion autōn — NA/TR · 43

- [Jesus] said to them, “These [are] the words I spoke to you while I was still with you -: Everything must be fulfilled that [is] written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and [the] Psalms.
δὲ Εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Οὗτοι μου οἱ λόγοι οὓς ἐλάλησα πρὸς ὑμᾶς ὢν ἔτι σὺν ὑμῖν ὅτι πάντα δεῖ πληρωθῆναι τὰ γεγραμμένα περὶ ἐμοῦ ἐν τῷ νόμῳ Μωϋσέως καὶ τοῖς προφήταις καὶ ψαλμοῖς de Eipen pros autous Houtoi mou hoi logoi hous elalēsa pros hymas ōn eti syn hymin hoti panta dei plērōthēnai ta gegrammena peri emou en tō nomō Mōuseōs kai tois prophētais kai psalmois — NA/TR · 44

Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
τότε διήνοιξεν αὐτῶν τὸν νοῦν τοῦ συνιέναι τὰς γραφάς tote diēnoixen autōn ton noun tou synienai tas graphas — NA/TR · 45

And He told them, “This [is] [what] is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from [the] dead [on] the third day,
Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὅτι Οὕτως γέγραπται τὸν Χριστὸν παθεῖν καὶ ἀναστῆναι ἐκ νεκρῶν τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ Kai eipen autois hoti Houtōs gegraptai ton Christon pathein kai anastēnai ek nekrōn tē tritē hēmera — NA/TR · 46

and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.
καὶ ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τῷ ὀνόματι μετάνοιαν εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν κηρυχθῆναι εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἀρξάμενοι ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλήμ kai epi autou tō onomati metanoian eis aphesin hamartiōn kērychthēnai eis panta ta ethnē arxamenoi apo Ierousalēm — NA/TR · 47

You are witnesses of these things.
ὑμεῖς ἐστε μάρτυρες τούτων hymeis este martyres toutōn — NA/TR · 48

And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But vvv remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.
Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐξαποστέλλω τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ μου Πατρός ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς δὲ ὑμεῖς καθίσατε ἐν τῇ πόλει ἕως οὗ ἐνδύσησθε δύναμιν ἐξ ὕψους Kai idou egō exapostellō tēn epangelian tou mou Patros eph’ hymas de hymeis kathisate en tē polei heōs hou endysēsthe dynamin ex hypsous — NA/TR · 49
The Ascension

[When] [Jesus] had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands [and] blessed them.
δὲ Ἐξήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ἔξω ἕως πρὸς Βηθανίαν καὶ ἐπάρας αὐτοῦ τὰς χεῖρας εὐλόγησεν αὐτούς de Exēgagen autous exō heōs pros Bēthanian kai eparas autou tas cheiras eulogēsen autous — NA/TR · 50

While… He was blessing them, He left… them and was carried up into heaven.
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν αὐτὸν τῷ εὐλογεῖν αὐτοὺς διέστη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν καὶ ἀνεφέρετο εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν kai egeneto en auton tō eulogein autous diestē ap’ autōn kai anephereto eis ton ouranon — NA/TR · 51

And they worshiped Him [and] returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
καὶ αὐτοὶ προσκυνήσαντες αὐτὸν ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ μετὰ μεγάλης χαρᾶς kai autoi proskynēsantes auton hypestrepsan eis Ierousalēm meta megalēs charas — NA/TR · 52

- praising God vvv continually… in the temple.
