Chapter 8

Women Minister to Jesus

vvv vvv vvv Soon afterward, [Jesus] traveled from one town and village {to another}, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve [were] with Him,

Καὶ ἐγένετο τῷ καθεξῆς ἐν καὶ αὐτὸς διώδευεν κατὰ πόλιν καὶ κώμην κηρύσσων καὶ εὐαγγελιζόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ οἱ δώδεκα σὺν αὐτῷ Kai egeneto tō kathexēs en kai autos diōdeuen kata polin kai kōmēn kēryssōn kai euangelizomenos tēn basileian tou Theou kai hoi dōdeka syn autō — NA/TR · 1

as well as some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,

  • Joanna [the] wife of Herod’s household manager Chuza, Susanna, and many others. [These women] were ministering to them out of their own means.

The Parable of the Sower

[While] a large crowd was gathering and [people] were coming to [Jesus] vvv from town after town, He told [them] [this] parable:

δὲ πολλοῦ ὄχλου Συνιόντος καὶ τῶν ἐπιπορευομένων πρὸς αὐτὸν κατὰ πόλιν εἶπεν διὰ παραβολῆς de pollou ochlou Syniontos kai tōn epiporeuomenōn pros auton kata polin eipen dia parabolēs — NA/TR · 4

“- A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some [seed] fell along the path, where it was trampled, and the birds of the air devoured it.

  • Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, [the seedlings] withered because they had no moisture.

  • Other [seed] fell vvv among thorns, - [which] grew up with [it] [and] choked [the seedlings].

Καὶ ἕτερον ἔπεσεν ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ἀκανθῶν καὶ αἱ ἄκανθαι συμφυεῖσαι ἀπέπνιξαν αὐτό Kai heteron epesen en mesō tōn akanthōn kai hai akanthai symphyeisai apepnixan auto — NA/TR · 7

Still other [seed] fell on - good soil, [where] it sprang up [and] produced a crop— a hundredfold. As [Jesus] said [this], He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Then His disciples asked Him what this parable meant.

  • He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others [I speak] in parables, so that, ‘[though] seeing, vvv they may not see; [though] hearing, vvv they may not understand.’

δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν γνῶναι τὰ μυστήρια τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ δέδοται Ὑμῖν δὲ τοῖς λοιποῖς ἐν παραβολαῖς ἵνα Βλέποντες μὴ βλέπωσιν Καὶ ἀκούοντες μὴ συνιῶσιν de Ho eipen gnōnai ta mystēria tēs basileias tou Theou dedotai Hymin de tois loipois en parabolais hina Blepontes mē blepōsin Kai akouontes mē syniōsin — NA/TR · 10

Now this is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.

  • The [ seeds ] along the path are those who hear, [but] the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that vvv they may not believe [and] be saved.

δὲ οἱ παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν εἰσιν οἱ ἀκούσαντες εἶτα ὁ διάβολος ἔρχεται καὶ αἴρει τὸν λόγον ἀπὸ αὐτῶν τῆς καρδίας ἵνα μὴ πιστεύσαντες σωθῶσιν de hoi para tēn hodon eisin hoi akousantes eita ho diabolos erchetai kai airei ton logon apo autōn tēs kardias hina mē pisteusantes sōthōsin — NA/TR · 12

  • The [ seeds ] on rocky ground [are] those who hear the word [and] receive it with joy, but [they] have no root. [They] believe for a season, [but] in [the] time of testing, they fall away.

δὲ Οἱ ἐπὶ τῆς πέτρας οἳ ὅταν ἀκούσωσιν τὸν λόγον δέχονται μετὰ χαρᾶς καὶ οὗτοι ἔχουσιν οὐκ ῥίζαν οἳ πιστεύουσιν πρὸς καιρὸν καὶ ἐν καιρῷ πειρασμοῦ ἀφίστανται de Hoi epi tēs petras hoi hotan akousōsin ton logon dechontai meta charas kai houtoi echousin ouk rhizan hoi pisteuousin pros kairon kai en kairō peirasmou aphistantai — NA/TR · 13

  • The [ seeds that ] fell among the thorns are those who hear, [but] as they go on their way, they are choked by [the] worries, riches, and pleasures of [this] life, and vvv their fruit does not mature.

δὲ Τὸ πεσόν εἰς τὰς ἀκάνθας οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἀκούσαντες καὶ πορευόμενοι συμπνίγονται ὑπὸ μεριμνῶν καὶ πλούτου καὶ ἡδονῶν τοῦ βίου καὶ οὐ τελεσφοροῦσιν de To peson eis tas akanthas houtoi eisin hoi akousantes kai poreuomenoi sympnigontai hypo merimnōn kai ploutou kai hēdonōn tou biou kai ou telesphorousin — NA/TR · 14

But the [seeds] on good soil are those with a noble and good heart, [who] hear the word, cling to [it], and by persevering produce a crop.

δὲ Τὸ ἐν τῇ καλῇ γῇ οὗτοί εἰσιν οἵτινες ἐν καλῇ καὶ ἀγαθῇ καρδίᾳ ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον κατέχουσιν καὶ ἐν ὑπομονῇ καρποφοροῦσιν de To en tē kalē gē houtoi eisin hoitines en kalē kai agathē kardia akousantes ton logon katechousin kai en hypomonē karpophorousin — NA/TR · 15

The Lesson of the Lamp

  • No one lights a lamp [and] covers it with a jar or puts [it] under a bed. Instead, he sets [it] on a stand, so those who enter can see the light.

δὲ Οὐδεὶς ἅψας λύχνον καλύπτει αὐτὸν σκεύει ἢ τίθησιν ὑποκάτω κλίνης ἀλλ’ τίθησιν ἐπὶ λυχνίας ἵνα οἱ εἰσπορευόμενοι βλέπωσιν τὸ φῶς de Oudeis hapsas lychnon kalyptei auton skeuei ē tithēsin hypokatō klinēs all’ tithēsin epi lychnias hina hoi eisporeuomenoi blepōsin to phōs — NA/TR · 16

For there is nothing hidden that vvv will not be disclosed, [and] nothing concealed that vvv vvv will not be made known and brought to light.

γάρ ἐστιν οὐ κρυπτὸν ὃ οὐ γενήσεται φανερὸν οὐδὲ ἀπόκρυφον ὃ οὐ μὴ γνωσθῇ καὶ ἔλθῃ εἰς φανερὸν gar estin ou krypton ho ou genēsetai phaneron oude apokryphon ho ou mē gnōsthē kai elthē eis phaneron — NA/TR · 17

Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen. Whoever… has vvv will be given [more], [but] whoever… vvv does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.

Βλέπετε οὖν πῶς ἀκούετε γὰρ ὃς ἂν ἔχῃ αὐτῷ δοθήσεται καὶ ὃς ἂν μὴ ἔχῃ καὶ ὃ δοκεῖ ἔχειν ἀρθήσεται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ Blepete oun pōs akouete gar hos an echē autō dothēsetai kai hos an mē echē kai ho dokei echein arthēsetai ap’ autou — NA/TR · 18

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

Then [Jesus’] mother and brothers came to [see] Him, but vvv they were unable to reach Him because of the crowd.

δὲ αὐτοῦ ἡ μήτηρ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ Παρεγένετο πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ οὐκ ἠδύναντο συντυχεῖν αὐτῷ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον de autou hē mētēr kai hoi adelphoi Paregeneto pros auton kai ouk ēdynanto syntychein autō dia ton ochlon — NA/TR · 19

  • He was told…, “Your mother and - brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.

δὲ ἀπηγγέλη αὐτῷ σου Ἡ μήτηρ καὶ σου οἱ ἀδελφοί ἑστήκασιν ἔξω θέλοντές ἰδεῖν σε de apēngelē autō sou Hē mētēr kai sou hoi adelphoi hestēkasin exō thelontes idein se — NA/TR · 20

But He replied…, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out.

Jesus Calms the Storm

  • vvv vvv One day [Jesus] said to [His disciples], “Let us cross to the other side of the lake. So He got into… a boat [with] vvv vvv [them] and set out.

δὲ Ἐγένετο ἐν μιᾷ τῶν ἡμερῶν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Διέλθωμεν εἰς τὸ πέραν τῆς λίμνης καὶ αὐτὸς ἐνέβη εἰς πλοῖον καὶ αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ καὶ ἀνήχθησαν de Egeneto en mia tōn hēmerōn kai eipen pros autous Dielthōmen eis to peran tēs limnēs kai autos enebē eis ploion kai autou hoi mathētai kai anēchthēsan — NA/TR · 22

  • As they sailed, He fell asleep, and a windstorm… came down on the lake, so that [the boat] was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

δὲ αὐτῶν πλεόντων ἀφύπνωσεν καὶ λαῖλαψ ἀνέμου κατέβη εἰς τὴν λίμνην καὶ συνεπληροῦντο καὶ ἐκινδύνευον de autōn pleontōn aphypnōsen kai lailaps anemou katebē eis tēn limnēn kai syneplērounto kai ekindyneuon — NA/TR · 23

  • [The disciples] went [and] woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing! Then [Jesus] got up [and] rebuked the wind and the raging waters, and they subsided, and [all] was calm.

“Where is your faith? He asked -. Frightened [and] amazed, they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!

The Demons and the Pigs

Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, vvv vvv across [the lake] from Galilee.

Καὶ κατέπλευσαν εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν Γερασηνῶν ἥτις ἐστὶν ἀντιπέρα τῆς Γαλιλαίας Kai katepleusan eis tēn chōran tōn Gerasēnōn hētis estin antipera tēs Galilaias — NA/TR · 26

When [Jesus] stepped vvv vvv ashore, He was met by a vvv demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time vvv [this man] had not worn clothing [or] vvv lived in a house, but [he stayed] in the tombs.

δὲ αὐτῷ ἐξελθόντι ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ὑπήντησεν τις ἔχων δαιμόνια ἀνήρ ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἱκανῷ χρόνῳ οὐκ ἐνεδύσατο ἱμάτιον καὶ οὐκ ἔμενεν ἐν οἰκίᾳ ἀλλ’ ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν de autō exelthonti epi tēn gēn hypēntēsen tis echōn daimonia anēr ek tēs poleōs kai hikanō chronō ouk enedysato himation kai ouk emenen en oikia all’ en tois mnēmasin — NA/TR · 27

When [the man] saw Jesus, he cried out [and] fell down before Him, vvv shouting in a loud voice…, “What do You [want] with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You not to torture me!

δὲ Ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀνακράξας προσέπεσεν αὐτῷ καὶ μεγάλῃ φωνῇ εἶπεν Τί σοί καὶ ἐμοὶ Ἰησοῦ Υἱὲ τοῦ τοῦ Ὑψίστου Θεοῦ δέομαί σου μή βασανίσῃς με de Idōn ton Iēsoun anakraxas prosepesen autō kai megalē phōnē eipen Ti soi kai emoi Iēsou Huie tou tou Hypsistou Theou deomai sou mē basanisēs me — NA/TR · 28

For [Jesus] had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and [though] he was bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains [and] been driven by the demon into solitary places.

γὰρ παρήγγελλεν τῷ τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ πνεύματι ἐξελθεῖν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου γὰρ πολλοῖς χρόνοις συνηρπάκει αὐτόν καὶ ἐδεσμεύετο φυλασσόμενος ἁλύσεσιν καὶ πέδαις καὶ διαρρήσσων τὰ δεσμὰ ἠλαύνετο ὑπὸ τοῦ δαιμονίου εἰς τὰς ἐρήμους gar parēngellen tō tō akathartō pneumati exelthein apo tou anthrōpou gar pollois chronois synērpakei auton kai edesmeueto phylassomenos halysesin kai pedais kai diarrēssōn ta desma ēlauneto hypo tou daimoniou eis tas erēmous — NA/TR · 29

“What is your name? - Jesus asked -. “Legion, - he replied, because many demons had gone into him.

And [the demons] kept begging [Jesus] not to order them to go into the Abyss.

καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα μὴ ἐπιτάξῃ αὐτοῖς ἀπελθεῖν εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον kai parekaloun auton hina mē epitaxē autois apelthein eis tēn abysson — NA/TR · 31

  • There on the hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. [So] [the demons] begged [Jesus] to let them enter… [the pigs], and He gave them permission…

δὲ ἐκεῖ ἐν τῷ ὄρει ἱκανῶν ἀγέλη χοίρων Ἦν βοσκομένη καὶ παρεκάλεσαν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιτρέψῃ αὐτοῖς εἰσελθεῖν εἰς ἐκείνους καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν αὐτοῖς de ekei en tō orei hikanōn agelē choirōn Ēn boskomenē kai parekalesan auton hina epitrepsē autois eiselthein eis ekeinous kai epetrepsen autois — NA/TR · 32

Then the demons came out of the man [and] went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

δὲ τὰ δαιμόνια Ἐξελθόντα ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους καὶ ἡ ἀγέλη ὥρμησεν κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν λίμνην καὶ ἀπεπνίγη de ta daimonia Exelthonta apo tou anthrōpou eisēlthon eis tous choirous kai hē agelē hōrmēsen kata tou krēmnou eis tēn limnēn kai apepnigē — NA/TR · 33

When those tending [the pigs] saw what had happened, they ran off and reported [this] in the town and - countryside.

δὲ οἱ βόσκοντες Ἰδόντες τὸ γεγονὸς ἔφυγον καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀγρούς de hoi boskontes Idontes to gegonos ephygon kai apēngeilan eis tēn polin kai eis tous agrous — NA/TR · 34

[So] [the people] went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man whom the demons had left…, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

δὲ ἐξῆλθον ἰδεῖν τὸ γεγονὸς καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ εὗρον τὸν ἄνθρωπον οὗ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐξῆλθεν ἀφ’ καθήμενον παρὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ τοὺς πόδας ἱματισμένον καὶ σωφρονοῦντα καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν de exēlthon idein to gegonos kai ēlthon pros ton Iēsoun kai heuron ton anthrōpon hou ta daimonia exēlthen aph’ kathēmenon para tou Iēsou tous podas himatismenon kai sōphronounta kai ephobēthēsan — NA/TR · 35

Meanwhile, those who had seen [it] reported… how the demon-possessed man had been healed.

δὲ οἱ ἰδόντες ἀπήγγειλαν αὐτοῖς πῶς ὁ δαιμονισθείς ἐσώθη de hoi idontes apēngeilan autois pōs ho daimonistheis esōthē — NA/TR · 36

Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked [Jesus] to depart from them, because great fear had taken hold of them. So He got into the boat [and] started back.

Καὶ ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῆς περιχώρου τῶν Γερασηνῶν ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὅτι μεγάλῳ φόβῳ συνείχοντο δὲ αὐτὸς ἐμβὰς εἰς πλοῖον ὑπέστρεψεν Kai hapan to plēthos tēs perichōrou tōn Gerasēnōn ērōtēsen auton apelthein ap’ autōn hoti megalō phobō syneichonto de autos embas eis ploion hypestrepsen — NA/TR · 37

  • The man whom the demons had left… begged to go with [Jesus]. But He sent him away…, saying,

δὲ ὁ ἀνὴρ οὗ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐξεληλύθει ἀφ’ Ἐδεῖτο αὐτοῦ εἶναι σὺν αὐτῷ δὲ ἀπέλυσεν αὐτὸν λέγων de ho anēr hou ta daimonia exelēlythei aph’ Edeito autou einai syn autō de apelysen auton legōn — NA/TR · 38

“Return vvv vvv vvv home and describe how much God has done for you. So [the man] went away [and] proclaimed all over the town how much Jesus had done for him.

The Healing Touch of Jesus

  • When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.

δὲ Ἐν τὸν Ἰησοῦν τῷ ὑποστρέφειν ὁ ὄχλος ἀπεδέξατο αὐτὸν γὰρ ἦσαν πάντες προσδοκῶντες αὐτόν de En ton Iēsoun tō hypostrephein ho ochlos apedexato auton gar ēsan pantes prosdokōntes auton — NA/TR · 40

Just then… [a] synagogue leader named Jairus - - came and fell at Jesus’ feet. He begged Him to come to his house,

because his… only daughter, [who was] about twelve…, - was dying. As [Jesus] went [with him], the crowds pressed around Him,

including a woman who had suffered vvv vvv from bleeding for twelve years. [She] had spent all her money on physicians, [but] no one was able to heal [her].

She came up behind [Jesus] [and] touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her vvv vvv vvv bleeding stopped.

“Who touched Me? - Jesus asked. But they all denied [it]. “Master, said Peter, “the people are crowding and pressing against You.

But Jesus declared, “Someone touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me.

Then the woman, seeing that vvv she could not escape notice, came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she explained vvv vvv why she had touched Him and how she had immediately been healed…

“Daughter, - said [Jesus]…, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace.

[While] He {was} still speaking, someone arrived from the [house of] the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead, he told [Jairus] -. “{Do not} bother the Teacher [anymore].

But Jesus overheard [them] [and] said to [Jairus], “{Do} not be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.

When He entered… the house, vvv He did not allow anyone to go in with Him except… Peter, John, James, and the child’s father and mother.

Meanwhile, everyone was weeping and mourning for her. But [Jesus] said, “vvv Stop weeping; vvv she is not dead but asleep.

And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead.

But [Jesus] took her by the hand [and] called out…, “Child, get up!

  • Her spirit returned, and at once she got up. And He directed that she be given [something] to eat.

  • Her parents were astounded, but [Jesus] ordered them {not} to tell [anyone] what had happened.
