Chapter 10

Jesus the Good Shepherd

1

“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever vvv does not enter… the vvv vvv sheepfold by the gate, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber.

Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὁ μὴ εἰσερχόμενος εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τῶν προβάτων διὰ τῆς θύρας ἀλλὰ ἀναβαίνων ἀλλαχόθεν ἐκεῖνος ἐστὶν κλέπτης καὶ λῃστής Amēn amēn legō hymin ho mē eiserchomenos eis tēn aulēn tōn probatōn dia tēs thyras alla anabainōn allachothen ekeinos estin kleptēs kai lēstēs — NA/TR · 1

But the [one who] enters by the gate is [the] shepherd of the sheep.

δὲ ὁ εἰσερχόμενος διὰ τῆς θύρας ἐστιν ποιμήν τῶν προβάτων de ho eiserchomenos dia tēs thyras estin poimēn tōn probatōn — NA/TR · 2

The gatekeeper opens [the gate] for him, and the sheep listen for his voice. He calls [his] own sheep by name and leads them out…

ὁ θυρωρὸς ἀνοίγει τούτῳ καὶ τὰ πρόβατα ἀκούει αὐτοῦ τῆς φωνῆς καὶ φωνεῖ τὰ ἴδια πρόβατα κατ’ ὄνομα καὶ ἐξάγει αὐτά ho thyrōros anoigei toutō kai ta probata akouei autou tēs phōnēs kai phōnei ta idia probata kat’ onoma kai exagei auta — NA/TR · 3

When he has brought out all [his] own, he goes on ahead of them, and [his] sheep follow him because they know his voice.

Ὅταν ἐκβάλῃ πάντα τὰ ἴδια πορεύεται ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ πρόβατα ἀκολουθεῖ αὐτῷ ὅτι οἴδασιν αὐτοῦ τὴν φωνὴν Hotan ekbalē panta ta idia poreuetai emprosthen autōn kai ta probata akolouthei autō hoti oidasin autou tēn phōnēn — NA/TR · 4

But vvv vvv they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will flee from him because vvv they do not recognize [his] voice…

δὲ οὐ μὴ ἀκολουθήσουσιν ἀλλοτρίῳ ἀλλὰ φεύξονται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὐκ οἴδασιν τὴν φωνήν τῶν ἀλλοτρίων de ou mē akolouthēsousin allotriō alla pheuxontai ap’ autou hoti ouk oidasin tēn phōnēn tōn allotriōn — NA/TR · 5

  • Jesus spoke to them [using] this illustration, but they {did} not understand what - He was telling them.

ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ταύτην τὴν παροιμίαν δὲ ἐκεῖνοι οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τίνα ἦν ἃ ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς ho Iēsous eipen autois Tautēn tēn paroimian de ekeinoi ouk egnōsan tina ēn ha elalei autois — NA/TR · 6

So [He] said to them again, “Truly, truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.

οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς πάλιν Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ θύρα τῶν προβάτων oun ho Iēsous Eipen autois palin Amēn amēn legō hymin hoti egō eimi hē thyra tōn probatōn — NA/TR · 7

All who came before Me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep vvv did not listen to them.

πάντες ὅσοι ἦλθον πρὸ ἐμοῦ εἰσὶν κλέπται καὶ λῃσταί ἀλλ’ τὰ πρόβατα οὐκ ἤκουσαν αὐτῶν pantes hosoi ēlthon pro emou eisin kleptai kai lēstai all’ ta probata ouk ēkousan autōn — NA/TR · 8

I am the gate. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved. He will come in and go out and find pasture.

ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ θύρα ἐάν τις εἰσέλθῃ δι’ ἐμοῦ σωθήσεται καὶ εἰσελεύσεται καὶ ἐξελεύσεται καὶ εὑρήσει νομὴν egō eimi hē thyra ean tis eiselthē di’ emou sōthēsetai kai eiseleusetai kai exeleusetai kai heurēsei nomēn — NA/TR · 9

The thief comes vvv only… to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have [it] in all its fullness.

ὁ κλέπτης ἔρχεται οὐκ εἰ μὴ ἵνα κλέψῃ καὶ θύσῃ καὶ ἀπολέσῃ ἐγὼ ἦλθον ἵνα ἔχωσιν ζωὴν καὶ ἔχωσιν περισσὸν ho kleptēs erchetai ouk ei mē hina klepsē kai thysē kai apolesē egō ēlthon hina echōsin zōēn kai echōsin perisson — NA/TR · 10

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὁ καλός ποιμὴν ὁ ὁ καλὸς ποιμὴν τίθησιν αὐτοῦ τὴν ψυχὴν ὑπὲρ τῶν προβάτων Egō eimi ho ho kalos poimēn ho ho kalos poimēn tithēsin autou tēn psychēn hyper tōn probatōn — NA/TR · 11

  • The hired hand is not [the] shepherd, [and] the sheep are not his own. [When] he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters [the flock].

καὶ ὁ μισθωτὸς ὢν οὐκ ποιμήν τὰ πρόβατα ἔστιν οὐκ οὗ ἴδια θεωρεῖ τὸν λύκον ἐρχόμενον καὶ ἀφίησιν τὰ πρόβατα καὶ φεύγει καὶ ὁ λύκος ἁρπάζει αὐτὰ καὶ σκορπίζει kai ho misthōtos ōn ouk poimēn ta probata estin ouk hou idia theōrei ton lykon erchomenon kai aphiēsin ta probata kai pheugei kai ho lykos harpazei auta kai skorpizei — NA/TR · 12

[ The man runs away ] because he is a hired servant and vvv is unconcerned… for the sheep.

ὅτι ἐστιν μισθωτός καὶ οὐ μέλει αὐτῷ περὶ τῶν προβάτων hoti estin misthōtos kai ou melei autō peri tōn probatōn — NA/TR · 13

I am the good shepherd. I know My [sheep] and My [sheep]… know Me,

Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὁ καλός ποιμὴν καὶ γινώσκω τὰ ἐμὰ καὶ τὰ ἐμά γινώσκουσί με Egō eimi ho ho kalos poimēn kai ginōskō ta ema kai ta ema ginōskousi me — NA/TR · 14

just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.

καθὼς ὁ Πατὴρ γινώσκει με κἀγὼ γινώσκω τὸν Πατέρα καὶ τίθημι μου τὴν ψυχήν ὑπὲρ τῶν προβάτων kathōs ho Patēr ginōskei me kagō ginōskō ton Patera kai tithēmi mou tēn psychēn hyper tōn probatōn — NA/TR · 15

  • I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them in as well, and they will listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock [and] one shepherd.

καὶ ἔχω ἄλλα πρόβατα ἃ ἔστιν οὐκ ἐκ ταύτης τῆς αὐλῆς με δεῖ ἀγαγεῖν κἀκεῖνα καὶ ἀκούσουσιν μου τῆς φωνῆς καὶ γενήσονται μία ποίμνη εἷς ποιμήν kai echō alla probata ha estin ouk ek tautēs tēs aulēs me dei agagein kakeina kai akousousin mou tēs phōnēs kai genēsontai mia poimnē heis poimēn — NA/TR · 16

The reason… the Father loves Me [is] that I lay down My life in order to take it up… again.

Διὰ τοῦτό ὁ Πατὴρ ἀγαπᾷ με ὅτι ἐγὼ τίθημι μου τὴν ψυχήν ἵνα λάβω αὐτήν πάλιν Dia touto ho Patēr agapa me hoti egō tithēmi mou tēn psychēn hina labō autēn palin — NA/TR · 17

No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down… of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down… and authority to take it up… again. This charge I have received from My Father.

οὐδεὶς αἴρει αὐτὴν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ τίθημι αὐτὴν ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ ἔχω ἐξουσίαν θεῖναι αὐτήν καὶ ἔχω ἐξουσίαν λαβεῖν αὐτήν πάλιν ταύτην τὴν ἐντολὴν ἔλαβον παρὰ μου τοῦ Πατρός oudeis airei autēn ap’ emou all’ egō tithēmi autēn ap’ emautou echō exousian theinai autēn kai echō exousian labein autēn palin tautēn tēn entolēn elabon para mou tou Patros — NA/TR · 18

Again there was division among the Jews because of [Jesus’] message.

πάλιν ἐγένετο Σχίσμα ἐν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις διὰ τούτους τοὺς λόγους palin egeneto Schisma en tois Ioudaiois dia toutous tous logous — NA/TR · 19

  • Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and insane. Why would you listen to Him?

δὲ πολλοὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἔλεγον ἔχει Δαιμόνιον καὶ μαίνεται τί ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ de polloi ex autōn elegon echei Daimonion kai mainetai ti akouete autou — NA/TR · 20

[But] others replied, “These are not the words of [a man] possessed by a demon. vvv Can a demon open [the] eyes of [the] blind?

Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Ταῦτα ἔστιν οὐκ τὰ ῥήματα δαιμονιζομένου μὴ δύναται δαιμόνιον ἀνοῖξαι ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλῶν Alloi elegon Tauta estin ouk ta rhēmata daimonizomenou mē dynatai daimonion anoixai ophthalmous typhlōn — NA/TR · 21

Jesus at the Feast of Dedication

At that time the Feast of Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter,

τότε τὰ ἐνκαίνια Ἐγένετο ἐν τοῖς Ἱεροσολύμοις ἦν χειμὼν tote ta enkainia Egeneto en tois Hierosolymois ēn cheimōn — NA/TR · 22

and Jesus was walking in the temple [courts] in vvv Solomon’s Colonnade.

καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς περιεπάτει ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐν τῇ τοῦ Σολομῶνος στοᾷ kai ho Iēsous periepatei en tō hierō en tē tou Solomōnos stoa — NA/TR · 23

So the Jews gathered around Him and demanded -, “How long… will You keep us in suspense…? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.

οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐκύκλωσαν αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ Ἕως πότε αἴρεις ἡμῶν τὴν ψυχὴν εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστός εἰπὲ ἡμῖν παρρησίᾳ oun hoi Ioudaioi ekyklōsan auton kai elegon autō Heōs pote aireis hēmōn tēn psychēn ei sy ei ho Christos eipe hēmin parrēsia — NA/TR · 24

“I already told you, Jesus replied -, “but vvv you did not believe. The works I do in - My Father’s name testify vvv on My behalf.

Εἶπον ὑμῖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε τὰ ἔργα ἃ ἐγὼ ποιῶ ἐν τῷ τοῦ μου Πατρός ὀνόματι ταῦτα μαρτυρεῖ περὶ ἐμοῦ Eipon hymin ho Iēsous Apekrithē autois kai ou pisteuete ta erga ha egō poiō en tō tou mou Patros onomati tauta martyrei peri emou — NA/TR · 25

But because you are not - My sheep, you refuse to believe.

ἀλλὰ ὅτι ἐστὲ οὐκ ἐκ τῶν ἐμῶν τῶν προβάτων ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετε alla hoti este ouk ek tōn emōn tōn probatōn hymeis ou pisteuete — NA/TR · 26

  • My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.

τὰ ἐμὰ τὰ πρόβατα ἀκούουσιν μου τῆς φωνῆς κἀγὼ γινώσκω αὐτά καὶ ἀκολουθοῦσίν μοι ta ema ta probata akouousin mou tēs phōnēs kagō ginōskō auta kai akolouthousin moi — NA/TR · 27

28

I give them eternal life, and vvv vvv they will never perish… No one can snatch them out of My hand.

κἀγὼ δίδωμι αὐτοῖς αἰώνιον ζωὴν καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀπόλωνται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ οὐχ τις ἁρπάσει αὐτὰ ἐκ μου τῆς χειρός kagō didōmi autois aiōnion zōēn kai ou mē apolōntai eis ton aiōna kai ouch tis harpasei auta ek mou tēs cheiros — NA/TR · 28

My Father who has given [them] to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch [them] out of [My] Father’s hand.

I and the Father are one.

At this, the Jews again picked up stones to stone Him.

οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πάλιν Ἐβάστασαν λίθους ἵνα λιθάσωσιν αὐτόν oun hoi Ioudaioi palin Ebastasan lithous hina lithasōsin auton — NA/TR · 31

  • [But] Jesus responded -, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which vvv of these do you stone Me?

ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ἔδειξα ὑμῖν Πολλὰ καλὰ ἔργα ἐκ τοῦ Πατρός διὰ ποῖον ἔργον αὐτῶν λιθάζετε ἐμὲ ho Iēsous apekrithē autois edeixa hymin Polla kala erga ek tou Patros dia poion ergon autōn lithazete eme — NA/TR · 32

“vvv We are not stoning You for [any] good work, said the Jews -, “but for blasphemy, because You, who are a man, make Yourself out to be… God.

οὐ λιθάζομέν σε Περὶ καλοῦ ἔργου Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι αὐτῷ ἀλλὰ περὶ βλασφημίας καὶ ὅτι σὺ ὢν ἄνθρωπος ποιεῖς σεαυτὸν Θεόν ou lithazomen se Peri kalou ergou Apekrithēsan hoi Ioudaioi autō alla peri blasphēmias kai hoti sy ōn anthrōpos poieis seauton Theon — NA/TR · 33

  • Jesus replied -, “Is it not written in your Law -: ‘I have said you are gods’

ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ἔστιν Οὐκ γεγραμμένον ἐν ὑμῶν τῷ νόμῳ ὅτι Ἐγὼ εἶπα ἐστε Θεοί ho Iēsous Apekrithē autois estin Ouk gegrammenon en hymōn tō nomō hoti Egō eipa este Theoi — NA/TR · 34

If he called them gods to whom the word of God came— and the Scripture vvv cannot be broken—

εἰ εἶπεν ἐκείνους θεοὺς πρὸς οὓς ὁ λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ ἡ γραφή οὐ δύναται λυθῆναι ei eipen ekeinous theous pros hous ho logos tou Theou egeneto kai hē graphē ou dynatai lythēnai — NA/TR · 35

[ then what about the One ] whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world? How then {can} you accuse [Me] of blasphemy for stating that I am [the] Son of God?

ὃν ὁ Πατὴρ ἡγίασεν καὶ ἀπέστειλεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον ὅτι ὑμεῖς λέγετε Βλασφημεῖς ὅτι εἶπον εἰμι Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ hon ho Patēr hēgiasen kai apesteilen eis ton kosmon hoti hymeis legete Blasphēmeis hoti eipon eimi Huios tou Theou — NA/TR · 36

If vvv I am not doing the works of My Father, [then] {do} not believe Me.

Εἰ οὐ ποιῶ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ μου Πατρός μὴ πιστεύετέ μοι Ei ou poiō ta erga tou mou Patros mē pisteuete moi — NA/TR · 37

But if I am doing [them], even though vvv you do not believe Me, believe the works [themselves], so that you may know and understand that the Father [is] in Me, and I am in the Father.

δὲ εἰ ποιῶ κἂν μὴ πιστεύητε ἐμοὶ πιστεύετε τοῖς ἔργοις ἵνα γνῶτε καὶ γινώσκητε ὅτι ὁ Πατὴρ ἐν ἐμοὶ κἀγὼ ἐν τῷ Πατρί de ei poiō kan mē pisteuēte emoi pisteuete tois ergois hina gnōte kai ginōskēte hoti ho Patēr en emoi kagō en tō Patri — NA/TR · 38

At this, they tried again to seize Him, but He escaped… their grasp.

John’s Testimony Confirmed

Then [Jesus] went back across the Jordan to the place where John had first been baptizing, and He stayed there.

Καὶ ἀπῆλθεν πάλιν πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου εἰς τὸν τόπον ὅπου Ἰωάννης ἦν τὸ πρῶτον βαπτίζων καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ Kai apēlthen palin peran tou Iordanou eis ton topon hopou Iōannēs ēn to prōton baptizōn kai emeinen ekei — NA/TR · 40

  • Many came to Him and said, “Although John never performed a sign, everything [he] said about this [man] was true.

And many in that place believed in [Jesus].
