Chapter 16

Persecution Foretold

1

[“]I have told you these things so that vvv you will not fall away.

λελάληκα ὑμῖν Ταῦτα ἵνα μὴ σκανδαλισθῆτε lelalēka hymin Tauta hina mē skandalisthēte — NA/TR · 1

2

They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.

ποιήσουσιν ὑμᾶς ἀποσυναγώγους ἀλλ’ ὥρα ἔρχεται ἵνα πᾶς ὁ ἀποκτείνας ὑμᾶς δόξῃ προσφέρειν λατρείαν τῷ Θεῷ poiēsousin hymas aposynagōgous all’ hōra erchetai hina pas ho apokteinas hymas doxē prospherein latreian tō Theō — NA/TR · 2

3

  • They will do these things because they have not known the Father [or] Me.

καὶ ποιήσουσιν ταῦτα ὅτι ἔγνωσαν οὐκ τὸν Πατέρα οὐδὲ ἐμέ kai poiēsousin tauta hoti egnōsan ouk ton Patera oude eme — NA/TR · 3

4

But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you [about] them. vvv I did not tell you these things from [the] beginning, because I was with you.

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

5

Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?

Νῦν δὲ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐρωτᾷ με Ποῦ ὑπάγεις Nyn de hypagō pros ton pempsanta me kai oudeis ex hymōn erōta me Pou hypageis — NA/TR · 5

6

Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things.

ἀλλ’ ὑμῶν τὴν καρδίαν πεπλήρωκεν ἡ λύπη ὅτι λελάληκα ὑμῖν ταῦτα all’ hymōn tēn kardian peplērōken hē lypē hoti lelalēka hymin tauta — NA/TR · 6

7

But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit… that I am going away. Unless… I go away, the Advocate vvv vvv will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν τὴν ἀλήθειαν συμφέρει ὑμῖν ἵνα ἐγὼ ἀπέλθω γὰρ ἐὰν μὴ ἀπέλθω ὁ Παράκλητος οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς δὲ ἐὰν πορευθῶ πέμψω αὐτὸν πρὸς ὑμᾶς all’ egō legō hymin tēn alētheian sympherei hymin hina egō apelthō gar ean mē apelthō ho Paraklētos ou mē elthē pros hymas de ean poreuthō pempsō auton pros hymas — NA/TR · 7

8

And [when] He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

9

in regard to sin -, because vvv they do not believe in Me;

περὶ ἁμαρτίας μέν ὅτι οὐ πιστεύουσιν εἰς ἐμέ peri hamartias men hoti ou pisteuousin eis eme — NA/TR · 9

10

  • in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see… Me;

δέ περὶ δικαιοσύνης ὅτι ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα καὶ θεωρεῖτέ οὐκέτι με de peri dikaiosynēs hoti hypagō pros ton Patera kai theōreite ouketi me — NA/TR · 10

11

and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.

12

vvv I still have much to tell you, but vvv you cannot yet bear [to hear it].

Ἔτι ἔχω πολλὰ λέγειν ὑμῖν ἀλλ’ οὐ δύνασθε ἄρτι βαστάζειν Eti echō polla legein hymin all’ ou dynasthe arti bastazein — NA/TR · 12

13

However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For vvv He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.

δὲ ὅταν ἐκεῖνος τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας ἔλθῃ ὁδηγήσει ὑμᾶς ἐν πάσῃ τῇ ἀληθείᾳ γὰρ οὐ λαλήσει ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ ἀλλ’ λαλήσει ὅσα ἀκούσει καὶ ἀναγγελεῖ ὑμῖν τὰ ἐρχόμενα de hotan ekeinos to Pneuma tēs alētheias elthē hodēgēsei hymas en pasē tē alētheia gar ou lalēsei aph’ heautou all’ lalēsei hosa akousei kai anangelei hymin ta erchomena — NA/TR · 13

14

He will glorify Me by taking from what [is] Mine and disclosing [it] to you.

15

Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why… I said that [the Spirit] will take from what [is] Mine and disclose [it] to you.

16

In a little [while]… you will see Me no more, and then after a little [while]… you will see Me.

Μικρὸν καὶ θεωρεῖτέ με οὐκέτι καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με Mikron kai theōreite me ouketi kai palin mikron kai opsesthe me — NA/TR · 16

Grief Will Turn to Joy

17

Then [some] of His disciples asked… one another, “Why is - He telling us, ‘In a little [while]… vvv you will not see Me, and then after a little [while]… you will see Me’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?

οὖν ἐκ αὐτοῦ τῶν μαθητῶν Εἶπαν πρὸς ἀλλήλους Τί ἐστιν τοῦτο ὃ λέγει ἡμῖν Μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με καί Ὅτι ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα oun ek autou tōn mathētōn Eipan pros allēlous Ti estin touto ho legei hēmin Mikron kai ou theōreite me kai palin mikron kai opsesthe me kai Hoti hypagō pros ton Patera — NA/TR · 17

18

  • They kept asking, “Why is - He saying, ‘a little [while]’? vvv We do not understand what He is saying.

οὖν ἔλεγον τί ἐστιν Τοῦτο ὃ λέγει Τὸ μικρόν οὐκ οἴδαμεν τί λαλεῖ oun elegon ti estin Touto ho legei To mikron ouk oidamen ti lalei — NA/TR · 18

19

  • Aware that they wanted to question Him, [Jesus] said to them, “Are you asking vvv one another why… I said, ‘In a little [while]… vvv you will not see Me, and then after a little [while]… you will see Me’?

Ἰησοῦς Ἔγνω ὁ ὅτι ἤθελον ἐρωτᾶν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ζητεῖτε μετ’ ἀλλήλων Περὶ τούτου ὅτι εἶπον Μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με Iēsous Egnō ho hoti ēthelon erōtan auton kai eipen autois zēteite met’ allēlōn Peri toutou hoti eipon Mikron kai ou theōreite me kai palin mikron kai opsesthe me — NA/TR · 19

20

Truly, truly, I tell you, you will weep and wail [while] the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.

ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ὑμεῖς κλαύσετε καὶ θρηνήσετε δὲ ὁ κόσμος χαρήσεται ὑμεῖς λυπηθήσεσθε ἀλλ’ ὑμῶν ἡ λύπη γενήσεται εἰς χαρὰν amēn amēn legō hymin hoti hymeis klausete kai thrēnēsete de ho kosmos charēsetai hymeis lypēthēsesthe all’ hymōn hē lypē genēsetai eis charan — NA/TR · 20

21

  • A woman has pain vvv in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth [her] child, she forgets… [her] anguish because of [her] joy that a child has been born into the world.

ἡ γυνὴ ἔχει λύπην ὅταν τίκτῃ ὅτι αὐτῆς ἡ ὥρα ἦλθεν δὲ ὅταν γεννήσῃ τὸ παιδίον μνημονεύει οὐκέτι τῆς θλίψεως διὰ τὴν χαρὰν ὅτι ἄνθρωπος ἐγεννήθη εἰς τὸν κόσμον hē gynē echei lypēn hotan tiktē hoti autēs hē hōra ēlthen de hotan gennēsē to paidion mnēmoneuei ouketi tēs thlipseōs dia tēn charan hoti anthrōpos egennēthē eis ton kosmon — NA/TR · 21

22

So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

οὖν καὶ μὲν ὑμεῖς ἔχετε λύπην νῦν δὲ ὄψομαι ὑμᾶς πάλιν καὶ ὑμῶν ἡ καρδία χαρήσεται καὶ οὐδεὶς αἴρει ἀφ’ ὑμῶν ὑμῶν τὴν χαρὰν oun kai men hymeis echete lypēn nyn de opsomai hymas palin kai hymōn hē kardia charēsetai kai oudeis airei aph’ hymōn hymōn tēn charan — NA/TR · 22

Ask in My Name

23

  • In that day you will {no longer} ask Me vvv [anything]. Truly, truly, I tell you, vvv whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.

Καὶ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐρωτήσετε ἐμὲ οὐκ οὐδέν ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἄν τι αἰτήσητε τὸν Πατέρα ἐν μου τῷ ὀνόματί δώσει ὑμῖν Kai en ekeinē tē hēmera erōtēsete eme ouk ouden amēn amēn legō hymin an ti aitēsēte ton Patera en mou tō onomati dōsei hymin — NA/TR · 23

24

Until now you have not asked vvv [for anything] in My name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.

25

I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak… to you vvv [this way], but will tell you plainly about the Father.

26

In that day you will ask in My name. vvv I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.

27

For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God.

28

I came from the Father and entered… the world. In turn, I will leave the world and go to the Father.

29

His disciples said, “See, now You are speaking vvv plainly and without vvv figures of speech.

30

Now we understand that You know all things and that You have no need for anyone to question You. Because of this, we believe that You came from God.

31

“vvv Do you finally believe? Jesus replied…

32

“Look, an hour is coming and has already come when you will be scattered, each to [his] own [home], {and} you will leave Me all alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.

33

I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!
