Chapter 20
The Resurrection

- Early [on] the first [day] of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the [entrance].
δὲ πρωῒ Τῇ μιᾷ τῶν σαββάτων οὔσης ἔτι σκοτίας Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ ἔρχεται εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ βλέπει τὸν λίθον ἠρμένον ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου de prōi Tē mia tōn sabbatōn ousēs eti skotias Maria hē Magdalēnē erchetai eis to mnēmeion kai blepei ton lithon ērmenon ek tou mnēmeiou — NA/TR · 1

So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, she said -, “and vvv we do not know where they have put Him!

Then Peter and the other disciple set out… for the tomb.
οὖν ὁ Πέτρος καὶ ὁ ἄλλος μαθητής Ἐξῆλθεν καὶ ἤρχοντο εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον oun ho Petros kai ho allos mathētēs Exēlthen kai ērchonto eis to mnēmeion — NA/TR · 3

- The two were running together, [but] the other disciple outran… Peter and reached… the tomb first.
δὲ οἱ δύο ἔτρεχον ὁμοῦ καὶ ὁ ἄλλος μαθητὴς προέδραμεν τάχιον τοῦ Πέτρου καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον πρῶτος de hoi dyo etrechon homou kai ho allos mathētēs proedramen tachion tou Petrou kai ēlthen eis to mnēmeion prōtos — NA/TR · 4

- He bent down [and] looked in at the linen cloths lying [there], but vvv he did not go in.

- Simon Peter arrived just after him. He entered… the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying [there].
οὖν Σίμων Πέτρος Ἔρχεται καὶ ἀκολουθῶν αὐτῷ καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ θεωρεῖ τὰ ὀθόνια κείμενα oun Simōn Petros Erchetai kai akolouthōn autō kai eisēlthen eis to mnēmeion kai theōrei ta othonia keimena — NA/TR · 6

- The cloth that had been around [Jesus’] head was rolled up, lying vvv vvv separate… from the linen cloths.
καὶ τὸ σουδάριον ὃ ἦν ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τῆς κεφαλῆς ἐντετυλιγμένον ἀλλὰ κείμενον εἰς ἕνα τόπον χωρὶς οὐ μετὰ τῶν ὀθονίων kai to soudarion ho ēn epi autou tēs kephalēs entetyligmenon alla keimenon eis hena topon chōris ou meta tōn othoniōn — NA/TR · 7

Then… the other disciple, who had reached… the tomb first, also went in. And he saw and believed.
οὖν τότε ὁ ἄλλος μαθητὴς ὁ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον πρῶτος καὶ εἰσῆλθεν καὶ εἶδεν καὶ ἐπίστευσεν oun tote ho allos mathētēs ho elthōn eis to mnēmeion prōtos kai eisēlthen kai eiden kai episteusen — NA/TR · 8

For vvv they still did not understand from the Scripture that [Jesus] had to rise from [the] dead.

Then the disciples returned… to their [homes].

But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. [And] as she wept, she bent down [to look] into the tomb,
δὲ Μαρία εἱστήκει ἔξω πρὸς τῷ μνημείῳ κλαίουσα οὖν ὡς ἔκλαιεν παρέκυψεν εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον de Maria heistēkei exō pros tō mnēmeiō klaiousa oun hōs eklaien parekypsen eis to mnēmeion — NA/TR · 11

and she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and [the other] at the feet.
καὶ θεωρεῖ δύο ἀγγέλους ἐν λευκοῖς καθεζομένους ὅπου τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἔκειτο ἕνα πρὸς τῇ κεφαλῇ καὶ ἕνα πρὸς τοῖς ποσίν kai theōrei dyo angelous en leukois kathezomenous hopou to sōma tou Iēsou ekeito hena pros tē kephalē kai hena pros tois posin — NA/TR · 12

“Woman, why are you weeping? they asked -. “Because they have taken my Lord {away}, she said…, “and vvv I do not know where they have put Him.

When she had said this, she turned… around and saw Jesus standing [there]. [But] vvv she did not recognize that it was Jesus.

“Woman, why are you weeping? Jesus asked -. “Whom are you seeking? Thinking He was the gardener, she said…, “Sir, if you have carried Him off…, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him…

Jesus said to her, “Mary. She turned [and] said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni! (which means “Teacher”).

“{Do} not cling to Me, Jesus said -, “for vvv I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.

Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples -, “I have seen the Lord! And [she told them] [what] He had said to her.

- It was the first day of [the] week, [and that] very evening, while the disciples were [together] with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood vvv vvv among them. “Peace [be] with you! He said to them.
οὖν Οὔσης τῇ μιᾷ ἡμέρᾳ σαββάτων τῇ ἐκείνῃ ὀψίας ὅπου οἱ μαθηταὶ ἦσαν καὶ τῶν θυρῶν κεκλεισμένων διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἦλθεν καὶ ἔστη εἰς τὸ μέσον καὶ Εἰρήνη ὑμῖν λέγει αὐτοῖς oun Ousēs tē mia hēmera sabbatōn tē ekeinē opsias hopou hoi mathētai ēsan kai tōn thyrōn kekleismenōn dia ton phobon tōn Ioudaiōn ho Iēsous ēlthen kai estē eis to meson kai Eirēnē hymin legei autois — NA/TR · 19

[After] He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
καὶ εἰπὼν τοῦτο ἔδειξεν αὐτοῖς καὶ τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τὴν πλευρὰν οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἐχάρησαν ἰδόντες τὸν Κύριον kai eipōn touto edeixen autois kai tas cheiras kai tēn pleuran oun hoi mathētai Echarēsan idontes ton Kyrion — NA/TR · 20

- Again Jesus said to them, “Peace [be] with you. As the Father has sent Me…, so also I am sending you.

[When] He had said this, He breathed on [them] and said…, “Receive [the] Holy Spirit.

If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven…; if you withhold [forgiveness] from anyone, it is withheld.

Now Thomas called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with [the disciples] when Jesus came.
δὲ Θωμᾶς ὁ λεγόμενος Δίδυμος εἷς ἐκ τῶν δώδεκα ἦν οὐκ μετ’ αὐτῶν ὅτε Ἰησοῦς ἦλθεν de Thōmas ho legomenos Didymos heis ek tōn dōdeka ēn ouk met’ autōn hote Iēsous ēlthen — NA/TR · 24

So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord! But he replied…, “Unless… I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger [where] the - nails [have been], and put my hand into His side, vvv vvv I will never believe.
οὖν οἱ ἄλλοι μαθηταί ἔλεγον αὐτῷ Ἑωράκαμεν τὸν Κύριον δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐὰν μὴ ἴδω τὸν τῶν ἥλων τύπον ἐν αὐτοῦ ταῖς χερσὶν καὶ βάλω μου τὸν δάκτυλόν εἰς τὸν τύπον τῶν ἥλων καὶ βάλω μου τὴν χεῖρα εἰς αὐτοῦ τὴν πλευρὰν οὐ μὴ πιστεύσω oun hoi alloi mathētai elegon autō Heōrakamen ton Kyrion de Ho eipen autois Ean mē idō ton tōn hēlōn typon en autou tais chersin kai balō mou ton daktylon eis ton typon tōn hēlōn kai balō mou tēn cheira eis autou tēn pleuran ou mē pisteusō — NA/TR · 25

- Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside [with] the doors locked, and Thomas [was] with them. Jesus came and stood vvv vvv among them and said, “Peace [be] with you.
Καὶ ὀκτὼ ἡμέρας μεθ’ αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἦσαν πάλιν ἔσω τῶν θυρῶν κεκλεισμένων καὶ Θωμᾶς μετ’ αὐτῶν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἔρχεται καὶ ἔστη εἰς τὸ μέσον καὶ εἶπεν Εἰρήνη ὑμῖν Kai oktō hēmeras meth’ autou hoi mathētai ēsan palin esō tōn thyrōn kekleismenōn kai Thōmas met’ autōn ho Iēsous erchetai kai estē eis to meson kai eipen Eirēnē hymin — NA/TR · 26

Then [Jesus] said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put [it] into My side. vvv vvv Stop doubting and believe.

Thomas replied…, “My Lord and my God!

- Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed [are] those who vvv have not seen and yet have believed.

The Purpose of John’s Book

- Jesus performed many vvv vvv vvv other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book.

But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.
