Chapter 6

The Feeding of the Five Thousand

1

After this, Jesus crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (that [is], [the Sea] of Tiberias).

  • A large crowd followed Him because they saw the signs He was performing on the sick.

δὲ πολύς ὄχλος ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ ὅτι ἐθεώρουν τὰ σημεῖα ἃ ἐποίει ἐπὶ τῶν ἀσθενούντων de polys ochlos ēkolouthei autō hoti etheōroun ta sēmeia ha epoiei epi tōn asthenountōn — NA/TR · 2

Then Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down with His disciples.

Now the vvv Jewish Feast of the Passover was near.

[When] Jesus looked up… and saw a large crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these [people] to eat?

οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐπάρας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ θεασάμενος ὅτι πολὺς ὄχλος ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγει πρὸς Φίλιππον Πόθεν ἀγοράσωμεν ἄρτους ἵνα οὗτοι φάγωσιν oun ho Iēsous eparas tous ophthalmous kai theasamenos hoti polys ochlos erchetai pros auton legei pros Philippon Pothen agorasōmen artous hina houtoi phagōsin — NA/TR · 5

But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do.

δὲ ἔλεγεν τοῦτο πειράζων αὐτόν γὰρ αὐτὸς ᾔδει τί ἔμελλεν ποιεῖν de elegen touto peirazōn auton gar autos ēdei ti emellen poiein — NA/TR · 6

Philip answered -, “Two hundred denarii vvv would not [buy] enough bread for… each {of them} to have a small [piece].

One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,

“Here is a boy [with] five barley loaves and two small fish. But what [ difference ] vvv will these make among so many?

“Have the [people] sit down, Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in [that] place, so the men sat down, about five thousand [of them].

Then Jesus took the loaves and… the fish, gave thanks, [and] distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.

And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over, so that vvv nothing will be wasted.

So they collected [them] and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

[When] the people saw the sign that [Jesus] had performed, they began to say -, “Truly this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.

Then Jesus, realizing that they were about to come and make Him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by Himself…

Jesus Walks on Water

  • When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,

δὲ Ὡς ὀψία ἐγένετο αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ κατέβησαν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν de Hōs opsia egeneto autou hoi mathētai katebēsan epi tēn thalassan — NA/TR · 16

  • got into… a boat, [and] started across the sea to Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus vvv had not yet gone out to them.

καὶ ἐμβάντες εἰς πλοῖον ἤρχοντο πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης εἰς Καφαρναούμ καὶ ἐγεγόνει ἤδη σκοτία καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς οὔπω ἐληλύθει πρὸς αὐτοὺς kai embantes eis ploion ērchonto peran tēs thalassēs eis Kapharnaoum kai egegonei ēdē skotia kai ho Iēsous oupō elēlythei pros autous — NA/TR · 17

A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated.

μεγάλου ἀνέμου πνέοντος τε ἥ θάλασσα διεγείρετο megalou anemou pneontos te hē thalassa diegeireto — NA/TR · 18

[When] they had rowed about three or four miles…, they saw Jesus approaching… the boat, walking on the sea— and they were terrified.

οὖν Ἐληλακότες ὡς εἴκοσι πέντε ἢ τριάκοντα σταδίους θεωροῦσιν τὸν Ἰησοῦν γινόμενον ἐγγὺς τοῦ πλοίου καὶ περιπατοῦντα ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν oun Elēlakotes hōs eikosi pente ē triakonta stadious theōrousin ton Iēsoun ginomenon engys tou ploiou kai peripatounta epi tēs thalassēs kai ephobēthēsan — NA/TR · 19

But [Jesus] spoke up…: “It is I; {do} not be afraid.

Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached… the shore where they were heading.

οὖν ἤθελον λαβεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ εὐθέως τὸ πλοῖον ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς εἰς ἣν ὑπῆγον oun ēthelon labein auton eis to ploion kai eutheōs to ploion egeneto epi tēs gēs eis hēn hypēgon — NA/TR · 21

Jesus the Bread of Life

The next day, the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea realized that only… one - boat had been there, and that Jesus vvv had not boarded… [it] {with} His disciples, but vvv vvv [they] had gone away alone.

However, [some] boats from Tiberias landed near the place where [the people] had eaten the bread [after] the Lord had given thanks.

So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for [Him].

[When] they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?

  • Jesus replied…, “Truly, truly, I tell you, [it is] not because you saw [these] signs [that] you are looking for Me, but because you ate… the loaves and had your fill.

ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς καὶ εἶπεν Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐχ ὅτι εἴδετε σημεῖα ζητεῖτέ με ἀλλ’ ὅτι ἐφάγετε ἐκ τῶν ἄρτων καὶ ἐχορτάσθητε ho Iēsous Apekrithē autois kai eipen Amēn amēn legō hymin ouch hoti eidete sēmeia zēteite me all’ hoti ephagete ek tōn artōn kai echortasthēte — NA/TR · 26

{Do} not work [for] food that perishes, but [for] food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.

μὴ ἐργάζεσθε τὴν βρῶσιν τὴν ἀπολλυμένην ἀλλὰ τὴν βρῶσιν τὴν μένουσαν εἰς αἰώνιον ζωὴν ἣν ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου δώσει ὑμῖν γὰρ τοῦτον ὁ Θεός ὁ Πατὴρ ἐσφράγισεν mē ergazesthe tēn brōsin tēn apollymenēn alla tēn brōsin tēn menousan eis aiōnion zōēn hēn ho Huios tou anthrōpou dōsei hymin gar touton ho Theos ho Patēr esphragisen — NA/TR · 27

Then they inquired -, “What must we do to perform the works of God?

  • Jesus replied…, “The work of God is this: to believe in the [One] He has sent.

So they asked Him, “What sign then {will} You perform, so that we may see [it] and believe You? What will You do?

Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’

  • Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, [it was] not Moses [who] gave you the bread from heaven, but [it is] My Father [who] gives you the true bread from heaven.

οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐ Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὸν ἄρτον ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀλλ’ μου ὁ Πατήρ δίδωσιν ὑμῖν τὸν τὸν ἀληθινόν ἄρτον ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ oun ho Iēsous Eipen autois Amēn amēn legō hymin ou Mōusēs dedōken hymin ton arton ek tou ouranou all’ mou ho Patēr didōsin hymin ton ton alēthinon arton ek tou ouranou — NA/TR · 32

For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.

“Sir, they said…, “give us this bread at all times.

  • Jesus answered -, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me vvv vvv will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me vvv vvv vvv will never thirst.

ὁ Ἰησοῦς Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς ὁ ἐρχόμενος πρὸς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ πεινάσῃ καὶ ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ πώποτε διψήσει ho Iēsous Eipen autois Egō eimi ho artos tēs zōēs ho erchomenos pros eme ou mē peinasē kai ho pisteuōn eis eme ou mē pōpote dipsēsei — NA/TR · 35

But [as] I stated…, vvv you have seen Me and still {you do} not believe.

ἀλλ’ εἶπον ὑμῖν ὅτι καὶ ἑωράκατέ με καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε all’ eipon hymin hoti kai heōrakate me kai ou pisteuete — NA/TR · 36

Everyone… the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the [one who] comes to Me vvv vvv I will never drive away.

For I have come down from heaven, not to do My [own] will, but [to do] the will of Him who sent Me.

And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of - those He has given Me, but raise them up… at the last day.

For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up… at the last day.

At this, the Jews began to grumble about [Jesus] because He had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.

  • They were asking, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then can He say, ‘I have come down from heaven

“Stop grumbling among yourselves, Jesus replied…

Μὴ γογγύζετε μετ’ ἀλλήλων Ἰησοῦς Ἀπεκρίθη καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Mē gongyzete met’ allēlōn Iēsous Apekrithē kai eipen autois — NA/TR · 43

“No one can come to Me unless… the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up… at the last day.

οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐλθεῖν πρός με ἐὰν μὴ ὁ Πατὴρ ὁ πέμψας με ἑλκύσῃ αὐτόν κἀγὼ ἀναστήσω αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ oudeis dynatai elthein pros me ean mē ho Patēr ho pempsas me helkysē auton kagō anastēsō auton en tē eschatē hēmera — NA/TR · 44

It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be… taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from [Him] comes to Me—

not that anyone has seen the Father except… the [One who] is from God; [only] He has seen the Father.

Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.

I am the bread of life.

This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live vvv vvv forever. And [this] bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh.

At this, the Jews began to argue among themselves -, “How can this [man] give us His flesh to eat?

[Jesus] said this while teaching in [the] synagogue in Capernaum.

On hearing [it], many of His disciples said, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it?

  • Aware… that His disciples were grumbling about this [ teaching ], Jesus asked them, “{Does} this offend you?

Then what [ will happen ] if you see the Son of Man ascend to where He was before?

The Spirit - gives life; the flesh profits vvv nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.

However, there are some of you who vvv do not believe. (For Jesus had known from [the] beginning which of them vvv did not believe and who - would betray Him.)

Then [Jesus] said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless… the Father vvv has granted it to him.

From that [time on] many of His disciples turned back… and no longer walked with Him.

  • Jesus answered them, “{Have} I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!
