Chapter 9
Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind

Now as [Jesus] was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth,
Καὶ παράγων εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον τυφλὸν ἐκ γενετῆς Kai paragōn eiden anthrōpon typhlon ek genetēs — NA/TR · 1

and His disciples asked Him…, “Rabbi, who sinned, this [man] or his parents, that he was born blind?
καὶ αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Ῥαββί τίς ἥμαρτεν οὗτος ἢ αὐτοῦ οἱ γονεῖς ἵνα γεννηθῇ τυφλὸς kai autou hoi mathētai ērōtēsan auton legontes Rhabbi tis hēmarten houtos ē autou hoi goneis hina gennēthē typhlos — NA/TR · 2

Jesus answered, “Neither this [man] nor his parents sinned, but [this happened] so that the works of God would be displayed in him.

While it is daytime, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work.

While I am in the world, I am [the] light of the world.

When [Jesus] had said [this], He spit on [the] ground, made [some] mud - -, and applied [it] to [the man’s] eyes.
εἰπὼν Ταῦτα ἔπτυσεν χαμαὶ καὶ ἐποίησεν πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος καὶ ἐπέχρισεν τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς eipōn Tauta eptysen chamai kai epoiēsen pēlon ek tou ptysmatos kai epechrisen ton pēlon epi autou tous ophthalmous — NA/TR · 6

Then He told him, “Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam (which means “Sent”). So [the man] went and washed, and came [back] seeing.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὕπαγε νίψαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται Ἀπεσταλμένος οὖν ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἐνίψατο καὶ ἦλθεν βλέπων kai eipen autō Hypage nipsai eis tēn kolymbēthran tou Silōam ho hermēneuetai Apestalmenos oun apēlthen kai enipsato kai ēlthen blepōn — NA/TR · 7

At this, [his] neighbors and those who had formerly seen… him vvv vvv begging began to ask, “Isn’t… this the [man who] used to sit and beg?

Some claimed that he was, but others said, “No, vvv he just looks like him. [But the man] kept saying -, “I am [the one].

“How then {were} your eyes opened? they asked -.

He answered, “The man they call Jesus made [some] mud and anointed my eyes, and He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed [and] received my sight.

“Where is He? they asked -. “vvv I do not know, he answered.

The Pharisees Investigate the Healing

They brought to the Pharisees [the man] who had been blind.
Ἄγουσιν πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους αὐτὸν τόν ποτε τυφλόν Agousin pros tous Pharisaious auton ton pote typhlon — NA/TR · 13

Now [the] day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath.
δὲ ἡμέρᾳ ἐν ᾗ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐποίησεν τὸν πηλὸν καὶ ἀνέῳξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς ἦν σάββατον de hēmera en hē ho Iēsous epoiēsen ton pēlon kai aneōxen autou tous ophthalmous ēn sabbaton — NA/TR · 14

So the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. - [The man] answered…, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and [now] I can see.
οὖν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν πάλιν πῶς ἀνέβλεψεν δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἐπέθηκέν Πηλὸν ἐπὶ μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς καὶ ἐνιψάμην καὶ βλέπω oun hoi Pharisaioi kai ērōtōn auton palin pōs aneblepsen de Ho eipen autois epethēken Pēlon epi mou tous ophthalmous kai enipsamēn kai blepō — NA/TR · 15

Because of this, some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for vvv He does not keep the Sabbath. But others said, “How can a sinful man perform such signs? And there was division among them.

So once again they asked the [man who had been] blind, “What {do} you say about Him, since [it was] your eyes He opened? “He is a prophet, - [the man] replied.
οὖν πάλιν λέγουσιν τῷ τυφλῷ Τί σὺ λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς ἠνέῳξέν ὅτι ἐστίν Προφήτης δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν oun palin legousin tō typhlō Ti sy legeis peri autou hoti sou tous ophthalmous ēneōxen hoti estin Prophētēs de Ho eipen — NA/TR · 17

The Jews still {did} not believe - that [the man] had been blind and had received his sight until… they summoned vvv vvv [his] parents
οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι οὖν Οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ ἀνέβλεψεν ἕως ὅτου ἐφώνησαν αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἀναβλέψαντος τοὺς γονεῖς hoi Ioudaioi oun Ouk episteusan peri autou hoti ēn typhlos kai aneblepsen heōs hotou ephōnēsan autou tou anablepsantos tous goneis — NA/TR · 18

and asked…, “Is this your son, [the one] you say was born blind? So how [is it that] he can now see…?
καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες ἐστιν Οὗτός ὑμῶν ὁ υἱὸς ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐγεννήθη τυφλὸς οὖν πῶς βλέπει ἄρτι kai ērōtēsan autous legontes estin Houtos hymōn ho huios hon hymeis legete hoti egennēthē typhlos oun pōs blepei arti — NA/TR · 19

- His parents answered…, “We know he is our son, and [we know] he was born blind.
οὖν αὐτοῦ οἱ γονεῖς Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν Οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἡμῶν ὁ υἱὸς καὶ ὅτι ἐγεννήθη τυφλὸς oun autou hoi goneis Apekrithēsan kai eipan Oidamen hoti houtos estin hēmōn ho huios kai hoti egennēthē typhlos — NA/TR · 20

But how he can now see… - or who opened his eyes, we {do} not know. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.
δὲ πῶς βλέπει νῦν οὐκ οἴδαμεν ἢ τίς ἤνοιξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἡμεῖς οὐκ οἴδαμεν ἐρωτήσατε αὐτὸν αὐτὸς ἔχει ἡλικίαν λαλήσει περὶ ἑαυτοῦ de pōs blepei nyn ouk oidamen ē tis ēnoixen autou tous ophthalmous hēmeis ouk oidamen erōtēsate auton autos echei hēlikian lalēsei peri heautou — NA/TR · 21

His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews vvv had already determined that anyone who confessed [Jesus] [as the] Christ would be put out of the synagogue.
αὐτοῦ οἱ γονεῖς εἶπαν Ταῦτα ὅτι ἐφοβοῦντο τοὺς Ἰουδαίους γὰρ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἤδη συνετέθειντο ἵνα ἐάν τις ὁμολογήσῃ αὐτὸν Χριστόν γένηται ἀποσυνάγωγος autou hoi goneis eipan Tauta hoti ephobounto tous Ioudaious gar hoi Ioudaioi ēdē synetetheinto hina ean tis homologēsē auton Christon genētai aposynagōgos — NA/TR · 22

That was why… his parents said -, “He is old enough. Ask him.

So a second time they called for the man who had been blind and said…, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.
οὖν δευτέρου Ἐφώνησαν ἐκ τὸν ἄνθρωπον ὃς ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Δὸς δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐστιν ἁμαρτωλός oun deuterou Ephōnēsan ek ton anthrōpon hos ēn typhlos kai eipan autō Dos doxan tō Theō hēmeis oidamen hoti houtos ho anthrōpos estin hamartōlos — NA/TR · 24

- He answered, “Whether He is a sinner vvv I do not know. [There is] one [thing] I do know: I was blind, [but] now I see!

“What did He do to you? they asked -. “How did He open your eyes?

He replied -, “I already told… you, and vvv you did not listen. Why do you want to hear [it] again? {Do} you also vvv want to become His disciples?
Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Εἶπον ἤδη ὑμῖν καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε τί θέλετε ἀκούειν πάλιν ὑμεῖς καὶ μὴ θέλετε γενέσθαι αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ Apekrithē autois Eipon ēdē hymin kai ouk ēkousate ti thelete akouein palin hymeis kai mē thelete genesthai autou mathētai — NA/TR · 27

Then they heaped insults on him and said, “You are His disciple; we are disciples of Moses.

We know that God spoke to Moses, but vvv we do not know where this [man] is {from}.

“That is remarkable indeed! the man said… “- You {do} not know where He is {from}, and yet He opened my eyes.
τούτῳ ἐστιν τὸ θαυμαστόν γὰρ ὁ ἄνθρωπος Ἀπεκρίθη καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐν ὅτι ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἐστίν καὶ ἤνοιξέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς toutō estin to thaumaston gar ho anthrōpos Apekrithē kai eipen autois En hoti hymeis ouk oidate pothen estin kai ēnoixen mou tous ophthalmous — NA/TR · 30

We know that God vvv does not listen to sinners, but He does listen to the one who vvv worships [Him] and does His will.
οἴδαμεν ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς οὐκ ἀκούει ἁμαρτωλῶν ἀλλ’ ἀκούει τούτου ἐάν τις ᾖ θεοσεβὴς καὶ ποιῇ αὐτοῦ τὸ θέλημα oidamen hoti ho Theos ouk akouei hamartōlōn all’ akouei toutou ean tis ē theosebēs kai poiē autou to thelēma — NA/TR · 31

Never vvv vvv before {has} anyone heard of opening [the] eyes of a man born blind.
οὐκ ἐκ τοῦ αἰῶνος ὅτι τις ἠκούσθη ἠνέῳξέν ὀφθαλμοὺς γεγεννημένου τυφλοῦ ouk ek tou aiōnos hoti tis ēkousthē ēneōxen ophthalmous gegennēmenou typhlou — NA/TR · 32

If this [man] were not from God, He could do no such thing.

They replied…, “You were born in utter sin, and you are instructing us? And they threw him out.
Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ σὺ ἐγεννήθης Ἐν ὅλος ἁμαρτίαις καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω Apekrithēsan kai eipan autō sy egennēthēs En holos hamartiais kai sy didaskeis hēmas kai exebalon auton exō — NA/TR · 34
Spiritual Blindness

[When] Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found [the man] [and] said, “{Do} you believe in the Son of Man
Ἰησοῦς Ἤκουσεν ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτὸν εἶπεν Σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου Iēsous Ēkousen hoti exebalon auton exō kai heurōn auton eipen Sy pisteueis eis ton Huion tou anthrōpou — NA/TR · 35

- “Who is He, Sir? he replied… “[Tell me] so that I may believe in Him.

vvv “You have already seen Him, Jesus answered -. “He is the [One] speaking with you.

“Lord, I believe, - he said. And he worshiped [Jesus].

Then Jesus declared, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that vvv vvv the blind may see and those who see may become blind.”

[Some] of the Pharisees who were with Him heard this, and they asked Him, “Are… we blind too?

“If you were blind, Jesus replied -, vvv vvv “you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim [you] can see, your guilt remains.
