James Killed, Peter Imprisoned

- About that time, King Herod reached out… to harm some who belonged to the church.
δὲ Κατ’ ἐκεῖνον τὸν καιρὸν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἡρῴδης ἐπέβαλεν τὰς χεῖρας κακῶσαί τινας τῶν ἀπὸ τῆς ἐκκλησίας de Kat’ ekeinon ton kairon ho basileus Hērōdēs epebalen tas cheiras kakōsai tinas tōn apo tēs ekklēsias — NA/TR · 1

- {He had} James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.

And seeing that [this] pleased the Jews, [Herod] proceeded… to seize Peter vvv during the - Feast of Unleavened [Bread].
δὲ ἰδὼν ὅτι ἐστιν ἀρεστόν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις προσέθετο καὶ συλλαβεῖν Πέτρον δὲ ἦσαν αἱ ἡμέραι τῶν ἀζύμων de idōn hoti estin areston tois Ioudaiois prosetheto kai syllabein Petron de ēsan hai hēmerai tōn azymōn — NA/TR · 3

He arrested [him] and put [him] in prison, handing [him] over to be guarded… by four squads of four soldiers [each]. [Herod] intended to bring him out… to the people after the Passover.

The Rescue of Peter

So - Peter was kept in prison, but the church was fervently praying… to God for him.
οὖν μὲν Ὁ Πέτρος ἐτηρεῖτο ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ δὲ ὑπὸ τῆς ἐκκλησίας ἦν ἐκτενῶς προσευχὴ γινομένη πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν περὶ αὐτοῦ oun men Ho Petros etēreito en tē phylakē de hypo tēs ekklēsias ēn ektenōs proseuchē ginomenē pros ton Theon peri autou — NA/TR · 5

On [the] night - [before] Herod was to bring him [to trial]…, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with sentries standing guard at the entrance to the prison.
τῇ ἐκείνῃ νυκτὶ ὁ δὲ Ὅτε ὁ Ἡρῴδης ἤμελλεν προαγαγεῖν αὐτὸν Πέτρος ἦν κοιμώμενος μεταξὺ δύο στρατιωτῶν δεδεμένος δυσίν ἁλύσεσιν τε φύλακές ἐτήρουν πρὸ τῆς θύρας τὴν φυλακήν tē ekeinē nykti ho de Hote ho Hērōdēs ēmellen proagagein auton Petros ēn koimōmenos metaxy dyo stratiōtōn dedemenos dysin halysesin te phylakes etēroun pro tēs thyras tēn phylakēn — NA/TR · 6

Suddenly… an angel of [the] Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side [and] woke him up…, saying, “Get up vvv quickly. And the chains fell off [his] wrists.
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἐπέστη καὶ φῶς ἔλαμψεν ἐν τῷ οἰκήματι δὲ πατάξας τοῦ Πέτρου τὴν πλευρὰν ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν λέγων Ἀνάστα ἐν τάχει καὶ αὐτοῦ αἱ ἁλύσεις ἐξέπεσαν ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν kai idou angelos Kyriou epestē kai phōs elampsen en tō oikēmati de pataxas tou Petrou tēn pleuran ēgeiren auton legōn Anasta en tachei kai autou hai halyseis exepesan ek tōn cheirōn — NA/TR · 7

“Get dressed and put on your sandals, said the angel -. Peter did so, and [the angel] told him, “Wrap your cloak {around you} and follow me.
Ζῶσαι καὶ ὑπόδησαι σου τὰ σανδάλιά δὲ εἶπεν ὁ ἄγγελος πρὸς αὐτόν δὲ ἐποίησεν οὕτως καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Περιβαλοῦ σου τὸ ἱμάτιόν καὶ ἀκολούθει μοι Zōsai kai hypodēsai sou ta sandalia de eipen ho angelos pros auton de epoiēsen houtōs kai legei autō Peribalou sou to himation kai akolouthei moi — NA/TR · 8

[So] [Peter] followed him out, [but] vvv he was unaware that what the angel was doing was real. He thought vvv he was only seeing a vision.
Καὶ ἠκολούθει ἐξελθὼν καὶ οὐκ ᾔδει ὅτι τὸ διὰ τοῦ ἀγγέλου γινόμενον ἐστιν ἀληθές ἐδόκει δὲ βλέπειν ὅραμα Kai ēkolouthei exelthōn kai ouk ēdei hoti to dia tou angelou ginomenon estin alēthes edokei de blepein horama — NA/TR · 9

- They passed [the] first and second guards [and] came to the iron gate leading to the city, which opened for them by itself. [When] they had gone outside [and] walked the length of one block, the angel suddenly left… him.
δὲ διελθόντες πρώτην καὶ δευτέραν φυλακὴν ἦλθαν ἐπὶ τὴν τὴν σιδηρᾶν πύλην τὴν φέρουσαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἥτις ἠνοίγη αὐτοῖς αὐτομάτη καὶ ἐξελθόντες προῆλθον μίαν ῥύμην καὶ ὁ ἄγγελος εὐθέως ἀπέστη ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ de dielthontes prōtēn kai deuteran phylakēn ēlthan epi tēn tēn sidēran pylēn tēn pherousan eis tēn polin hētis ēnoigē autois automatē kai exelthontes proēlthon mian rhymēn kai ho angelos eutheōs apestē ap’ autou — NA/TR · 10

Then Peter came to himself [and] said, “Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent His angel and rescued me from Herod’s grasp and [from] everything the Jewish people were anticipating.
Καὶ ὁ Πέτρος γενόμενος ἐν ἑαυτῷ εἶπεν Νῦν οἶδα ἀληθῶς ὅτι ὁ Κύριος ἐξαπέστειλεν αὐτοῦ τὸν ἄγγελον καὶ ἐξείλατό με ἐκ Ἡρῴδου χειρὸς καὶ πάσης τῶν Ἰουδαίων τοῦ λαοῦ τῆς προσδοκίας Kai ho Petros genomenos en heautō eipen Nyn oida alēthōs hoti ho Kyrios exapesteilen autou ton angelon kai exeilato me ek Hērōdou cheiros kai pasēs tōn Ioudaiōn tou laou tēs prosdokias — NA/TR · 11

And [when] he had realized [this], he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, [also] called Mark, where many [people] vvv had gathered together and were praying.
τε Συνιδών ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὴν οἰκίαν τῆς Μαρίας τῆς μητρὸς Ἰωάννου τοῦ ἐπικαλουμένου Μάρκου οὗ ἱκανοὶ ἦσαν συνηθροισμένοι καὶ προσευχόμενοι te Synidōn ēlthen epi tēn oikian tēs Marias tēs mētros Iōannou tou epikaloumenou Markou hou hikanoi ēsan synēthroismenoi kai proseuchomenoi — NA/TR · 12

- He knocked [at] the vvv vvv outer gate, [and] a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer [it].
δὲ αὐτοῦ κρούσαντος τὴν θύραν τοῦ πυλῶνος παιδίσκη ὀνόματι Ῥόδη προσῆλθεν ὑπακοῦσαι de autou krousantos tēn thyran tou pylōnos paidiskē onomati Rhodē prosēlthen hypakousai — NA/TR · 13

- When she recognized Peter’s voice, vvv vvv she was so overjoyed [that] vvv she forgot to open the gate, but ran inside [and] announced -, “Peter is standing at the gate!
καὶ ἐπιγνοῦσα τοῦ Πέτρου τὴν φωνὴν ἀπὸ τῆς χαρᾶς οὐκ ἤνοιξεν τὸν πυλῶνα δὲ εἰσδραμοῦσα ἀπήγγειλεν τὸν Πέτρον ἑστάναι πρὸ τοῦ πυλῶνος kai epignousa tou Petrou tēn phōnēn apo tēs charas ouk ēnoixen ton pylōna de eisdramousa apēngeilen ton Petron hestanai pro tou pylōnos — NA/TR · 14

“You are out of your mind, - they told… her. But [when] she kept insisting [it] was so, - they said, “It must be his angel.

But Peter kept on knocking, and [when] they opened [the door] [and] saw him, they were astounded.

- [Peter] motioned with [his] hand for silence, [and] he described how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. “Send word… to James and to the brothers, he said, and he left for… another place.
δὲ κατασείσας τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῖς σιγᾶν διηγήσατο αὐτοῖς πῶς ὁ Κύριος ἐξήγαγεν αὐτὸν ἐκ τῆς φυλακῆς Ἀπαγγείλατε ταῦτα Ἰακώβῳ καὶ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς τε εἶπέν καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐπορεύθη εἰς ἕτερον τόπον de kataseisas tē cheiri autois sigan diēgēsato autois pōs ho Kyrios exēgagen auton ek tēs phylakēs Apangeilate tauta Iakōbō kai tois adelphois te eipen kai exelthōn eporeuthē eis heteron topon — NA/TR · 17

At daybreak… there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what… had become [of] Peter.
δὲ ἡμέρας Γενομένης ἦν οὐκ ὀλίγος τάραχος ἐν τοῖς στρατιώταις τί ἄρα ἐγένετο ὁ Πέτρος de hēmeras Genomenēs ēn ouk oligos tarachos en tois stratiōtais ti ara egeneto ho Petros — NA/TR · 18

[After] Herod had searched for him vvv vvv [unsuccessfully], he examined the guards [and] ordered that they be executed. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea [and] spent some time [there].
δὲ Ἡρῴδης ἐπιζητήσας αὐτὸν καὶ μὴ εὑρὼν ἀνακρίνας τοὺς φύλακας ἐκέλευσεν ἀπαχθῆναι καὶ κατελθὼν ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς Καισάρειαν διέτριβεν de Hērōdēs epizētēsas auton kai mē heurōn anakrinas tous phylakas ekeleusen apachthēnai kai katelthōn apo tēs Ioudaias eis Kaisareian dietriben — NA/TR · 19
The Death of Herod

Now [Herod] was in a furious dispute [with the] people of Tyre and Sidon, and they convened… before him. Having secured the support of Blastus, the king’s vvv vvv chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their region depended on the king’s [country] for food.
δὲ Ἦν θυμομαχῶν Τυρίοις καὶ Σιδωνίοις δὲ ὁμοθυμαδὸν παρῆσαν πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ πείσαντες Βλάστον τὸν τοῦ βασιλέως ἐπὶ τοῦ κοιτῶνος ᾐτοῦντο εἰρήνην διὰ αὐτῶν τὴν χώραν ἀπὸ τῆς βασιλικῆς τὸ τρέφεσθαι de Ēn thymomachōn Tyriois kai Sidōniois de homothymadon parēsan pros auton kai peisantes Blaston ton tou basileōs epi tou koitōnos ētounto eirēnēn dia autōn tēn chōran apo tēs basilikēs to trephesthai — NA/TR · 20

- On the appointed day, Herod donned [his] royal [robes], sat on [his] throne, [and] addressed [the people].
δὲ τακτῇ ἡμέρᾳ ὁ Ἡρῴδης ἐνδυσάμενος βασιλικὴν ἐσθῆτα καὶ καθίσας ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος ἐδημηγόρει πρὸς αὐτούς de taktē hēmera ho Hērōdēs endysamenos basilikēn esthēta kai kathisas epi tou bēmatos edēmēgorei pros autous — NA/TR · 21

And [they] began to shout, “[This is the] voice of a god, not a man!
δὲ ὁ δῆμος ἐπεφώνει φωνὴ Θεοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἀνθρώπου de ho dēmos epephōnei phōnē Theou kai ouk anthrōpou — NA/TR · 22

Immediately -, because… vvv [Herod] did not give glory to God, an angel of [the] Lord struck him {down}, and he was eaten by worms [and] died.

But the word of God continued to spread and multiply.

[When] Barnabas and Saul had fulfilled [their] mission to Jerusalem, they returned, bringing with [them] John, [also] called Mark.
