Chapter 18

Paul Ministers in Corinth

After this, [Paul] left… Athens [and] went to Corinth.

Μετὰ ταῦτα χωρισθεὶς ἐκ τῶν Ἀθηνῶν ἦλθεν εἰς Κόρινθον Meta tauta chōristheis ek tōn Athēnōn ēlthen eis Korinthon — NA/TR · 1

[There] he found a Jew named Aquila -, a native of Pontus, who {had} recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave… Rome. [Paul] went to [ visit ] them,

καὶ εὑρών τινα Ἰουδαῖον ὀνόματι Ἀκύλαν τῷ γένει Ποντικὸν προσφάτως ἐληλυθότα ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰταλίας καὶ αὐτοῦ γυναῖκα Πρίσκιλλαν διὰ Κλαύδιον τὸ διατεταχέναι πάντας τοὺς Ἰουδαίους χωρίζεσθαι ἀπὸ τῆς Ῥώμης προσῆλθεν αὐτοῖς kai heurōn tina Ioudaion onomati Akylan tō genei Pontikon prosphatōs elēlythota apo tēs Italias kai autou gynaika Priskillan dia Klaudion to diatetachenai pantas tous Ioudaious chōrizesthai apo tēs Rhōmēs prosēlthen autois — NA/TR · 2

and he stayed and worked with them because they were tentmakers vvv by trade, [just as] he was.

καὶ ἔμενεν καὶ ἠργάζετο παρ’ αὐτοῖς διὰ γὰρ ἦσαν σκηνοποιοὶ τῇ τέχνῃ τὸ ὁμότεχνον εἶναι kai emenen kai ērgazeto par’ autois dia gar ēsan skēnopoioi tē technē to homotechnon einai — NA/TR · 3

  • Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks alike.

κατὰ πᾶν σάββατον δὲ Διελέγετο ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ ἔπειθέν Ἰουδαίους καὶ Ἕλληνας τε kata pan sabbaton de Dielegeto en tē synagōgē epeithen Ioudaious kai Hellēnas te — NA/TR · 4

And when - Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself fully to the word, testifying to the Jews [that] Jesus is the Christ.

δὲ Ὡς τε ὅ Σιλᾶς καὶ ὁ Τιμόθεος κατῆλθον ἀπὸ τῆς Μακεδονίας ὁ Παῦλος συνείχετο τῷ λόγῳ διαμαρτυρόμενος τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις Ἰησοῦν εἶναι τὸν Χριστὸν de Hōs te ho Silas kai ho Timotheos katēlthon apo tēs Makedonias ho Paulos syneicheto tō logō diamartyromenos tois Ioudaiois Iēsoun einai ton Christon — NA/TR · 5

But [when] they opposed and insulted [him], he shook out [his] garments [and] told… them, “Your blood [be] on your [own] heads! I [am] innocent [of it]. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.

δὲ αὐτῶν ἀντιτασσομένων καὶ βλασφημούντων ἐκτιναξάμενος τὰ ἱμάτια εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς ὑμῶν Τὸ αἷμα ἐπὶ ὑμῶν τὴν κεφαλὴν ἐγώ καθαρὸς ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν πορεύσομαι εἰς τὰ ἔθνη de autōn antitassomenōn kai blasphēmountōn ektinaxamenos ta himatia eipen pros autous hymōn To haima epi hymōn tēn kephalēn egō katharos apo tou nyn poreusomai eis ta ethnē — NA/TR · 6

[So] [Paul] left… the synagogue [and] went next door to [the] house of Titus Justus, - a worshiper of God.

Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν τῇ συναγωγῇ εἰσῆλθεν ἦν συνομοροῦσα εἰς οἰκίαν τινὸς ὀνόματι Τίτου Ἰούστου οὗ ἡ οἰκία σεβομένου τὸν Θεόν Kai metabas ekeithen tē synagōgē eisēlthen ēn synomorousa eis oikian tinos onomati Titou Ioustou hou hē oikia sebomenou ton Theon — NA/TR · 7

  • Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his whole household believed in the Lord. And many of the Corinthians who heard [ the message ] believed and were baptized.

δὲ Κρίσπος ὁ ἀρχισυνάγωγος σὺν αὐτοῦ ὅλῳ τῷ οἴκῳ ἐπίστευσεν τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ πολλοὶ τῶν Κορινθίων ἀκούοντες ἐπίστευον καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο de Krispos ho archisynagōgos syn autou holō tō oikō episteusen tō Kyriō kai polloi tōn Korinthiōn akouontes episteuon kai ebaptizonto — NA/TR · 8

One… night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “{Do} not be afraid; keep on speaking; {do} not be silent.

δὲ ἐν νυκτὶ ὁ Κύριος Εἶπεν τῷ Παύλῳ δι’ ὁράματος Μὴ φοβοῦ ἀλλὰ λάλει καὶ μὴ σιωπήσῃς de en nykti ho Kyrios Eipen tō Paulō di’ horamatos Mē phobou alla lalei kai mē siōpēsēs — NA/TR · 9

For I am with you and no one will lay a hand on… you, because I have… many people in this city.

διότι ἐγώ εἰμι μετὰ σοῦ καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπιθήσεταί σοι τοῦ κακῶσαί σε διότι ἐστί μοι πολὺς λαός ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ πόλει dioti egō eimi meta sou kai oudeis epithēsetai soi tou kakōsai se dioti esti moi polys laos en tautē tē polei — NA/TR · 10

[So] [Paul] stayed for a year and [a half]…, teaching the word of God among [the Corinthians].

Paul before Gallio

[While] Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews coordinated an attack on Paul and brought him before the judgment seat.

δὲ Γαλλίωνος ὄντος ἀνθυπάτου τῆς Ἀχαΐας οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ὁμοθυμαδὸν κατεπέστησαν τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸ βῆμα de Galliōnos ontos anthypatou tēs Achaias hoi Ioudaioi homothymadon katepestēsan tō Paulō kai ēgagon auton epi to bēma — NA/TR · 12

“This [man] is persuading the [people] to worship God in ways contrary to the law, they said -.

But [just as] Paul was about to speak…, Gallio told… the Jews, “If this matter involved a wrongdoing or vicious crime, O Jews, vvv it would be reasonable vvv for me to hear your [ complaint ].

δὲ τοῦ Παύλου Μέλλοντος ἀνοίγειν τὸ στόμα ὁ Γαλλίων εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς Ἰουδαίους Εἰ μὲν ἦν τι ἀδίκημά ἢ πονηρόν ῥᾳδιούργημα ὦ Ἰουδαῖοι κατὰ λόγον ἂν ἀνεσχόμην ὑμῶν de tou Paulou Mellontos anoigein to stoma ho Galliōn eipen pros tous Ioudaious Ei men ēn ti adikēma ē ponēron rhadiourgēma ō Ioudaioi kata logon an aneschomēn hymōn — NA/TR · 14

But since it is a dispute about words and names and vvv vvv your own law, settle [it] yourselves. I refuse… to be a judge of such things.

δὲ εἰ ἐστιν ζητήματά περὶ λόγου καὶ ὀνομάτων καὶ τοῦ καθ’ ὑμᾶς νόμου ὄψεσθε αὐτοί ἐγὼ βούλομαι οὐ εἶναι κριτὴς τούτων de ei estin zētēmata peri logou kai onomatōn kai tou kath’ hymas nomou opsesthe autoi egō boulomai ou einai kritēs toutōn — NA/TR · 15

And he drove them {away} from the judgment seat.

καὶ ἀπήλασεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ βήματος kai apēlasen autous apo tou bēmatos — NA/TR · 16

At this, the crowd seized Sosthenes the synagogue leader [and] beat [him] in front of the judgment seat. [But] none of this was of concern to Gallio.

δὲ πάντες Ἐπιλαβόμενοι Σωσθένην τὸν ἀρχισυνάγωγον ἔτυπτον ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ βήματος καὶ οὐδὲν τούτων ἔμελεν τῷ Γαλλίωνι de pantes Epilabomenoi Sōsthenēn ton archisynagōgon etypton emprosthen tou bēmatos kai ouden toutōn emelen tō Galliōni — NA/TR · 17

Paul Returns to Antioch

  • Paul remained [in Corinth] for quite some time [before] saying goodbye to the brothers. {He had} [his] head shaved in Cenchrea to keep a vow he had [ made ], [and then] he sailed for Syria, vvv accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila.

δὲ Ὁ Παῦλος προσμείνας ἱκανὰς ἔτι ἡμέρας ἀποταξάμενος τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς τὴν κεφαλήν κειράμενος ἐν Κενχρεαῖς γὰρ εὐχήν εἶχεν ἐξέπλει εἰς τὴν Συρίαν καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ Πρίσκιλλα καὶ Ἀκύλας de Ho Paulos prosmeinas hikanas eti hēmeras apotaxamenos tois adelphois tēn kephalēn keiramenos en Kenchreais gar euchēn eichen exeplei eis tēn Syrian kai syn autō Priskilla kai Akylas — NA/TR · 18

[When] they reached… Ephesus, [Paul] left… [Priscilla and Aquila]. He himself went into the synagogue [there] [and] reasoned with the Jews.

δὲ Κατήντησαν εἰς Ἔφεσον κατέλιπεν αὐτοῦ κἀκείνους δὲ αὐτὸς εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν διελέξατο τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις de Katēntēsan eis Epheson katelipen autou kakeinous de autos eiselthōn eis tēn synagōgēn dielexato tois Ioudaiois — NA/TR · 19

[When] they asked [him] to stay for a while longer…, vvv he declined.

δὲ αὐτῶν ἐρωτώντων μεῖναι ἐπὶ πλείονα χρόνον οὐκ ἐπένευσεν de autōn erōtōntōn meinai epi pleiona chronon ouk epeneusen — NA/TR · 20

But as he left, he said, “vvv I will come back to you [if] God is willing. [And] he set sail from Ephesus.

ἀλλὰ ἀποταξάμενος καὶ εἰπών Πάλιν ἀνακάμψω πρὸς ὑμᾶς τοῦ Θεοῦ θέλοντος ἀνήχθη ἀπὸ τῆς Ἐφέσου alla apotaxamenos kai eipōn Palin anakampsō pros hymas tou Theou thelontos anēchthē apo tēs Ephesou — NA/TR · 21

[When Paul] had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church [ at Jerusalem ]. [Then] he went down to Antioch.

καὶ κατελθὼν εἰς Καισάρειαν ἀναβὰς καὶ ἀσπασάμενος τὴν ἐκκλησίαν κατέβη εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν kai katelthōn eis Kaisareian anabas kai aspasamenos tēn ekklēsian katebē eis Antiocheian — NA/TR · 22

Paul’s Third Missionary Journey Begins

[After] [Paul] had spent some time [in Antioch], he traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

Καὶ ποιήσας τινὰ χρόνον ἐξῆλθεν καθεξῆς διερχόμενος τὴν χώραν Γαλατικὴν καὶ Φρυγίαν στηρίζων πάντας τοὺς μαθητάς Kai poiēsas tina chronon exēlthen kathexēs dierchomenos tēn chōran Galatikēn kai Phrygian stērizōn pantas tous mathētas — NA/TR · 23

Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, well versed in the Scriptures.

δέ τις Ἰουδαῖος ὀνόματι Ἀπολλῶς τῷ γένει Ἀλεξανδρεὺς κατήντησεν εἰς Ἔφεσον ὢν λόγιος ἀνὴρ δυνατὸς ἐν ταῖς γραφαῖς de tis Ioudaios onomati Apollōs tō genei Alexandreus katēntēsen eis Epheson ōn logios anēr dynatos en tais graphais — NA/TR · 24

He had been instructed in the way of the Lord and was fervent in spirit. He spoke and taught accurately about Jesus, [though] he knew only the baptism of John.

And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. [When] Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside… and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

[When] [Apollos] resolved to cross over to Achaia, the brothers encouraged [him] [and] wrote to the disciples [there] to welcome him. On his arrival…, he {was a} great help to those who by grace had believed.

δὲ αὐτοῦ Βουλομένου διελθεῖν εἰς τὴν Ἀχαΐαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ προτρεψάμενοι ἔγραψαν τοῖς μαθηταῖς ἀποδέξασθαι αὐτόν παραγενόμενος ὃς πολὺ συνεβάλετο τοῖς διὰ τῆς χάριτος πεπιστευκόσιν de autou Boulomenou dielthein eis tēn Achaian hoi adelphoi protrepsamenoi egrapsan tois mathētais apodexasthai auton paragenomenos hos poly synebaleto tois dia tēs charitos pepisteukosin — NA/TR · 27

For he powerfully refuted the Jews in public [debate], proving from the Scriptures [that] Jesus is the Christ.
