Chapter 23
Paul before the Sanhedrin
1
- Paul looked directly at the Sanhedrin [and] said, vvv “Brothers, I have conducted myself before God in all good conscience to this day.

At this, the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near [Paul] to strike him on the mouth.
δὲ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς Ἁνανίας ἐπέταξεν τοῖς παρεστῶσιν αὐτῷ τύπτειν αὐτοῦ τὸ στόμα de ho archiereus Hananias epetaxen tois parestōsin autō typtein autou to stoma — NA/TR · 2

Then Paul said to him, “God will strike [you], you whitewashed wall! You sit [here] to judge me according to the law, yet you yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck.

But those standing nearby said, “How dare you insult the high priest of God!

“Brothers, - Paul replied, “vvv I was not aware that he was [the] high priest, for it is written -: ‘vvv Do not speak evil [about the] ruler of your people.’
ἀδελφοί τε ὁ Παῦλος Ἔφη Οὐκ ᾔδειν ὅτι ἐστὶν ἀρχιερεύς γὰρ γέγραπται ὅτι οὐκ ἐρεῖς κακῶς Ἄρχοντα τοῦ σου λαοῦ adelphoi te ho Paulos Ephē Ouk ēdein hoti estin archiereus gar gegraptai hoti ouk ereis kakōs Archonta tou sou laou — NA/TR · 5

Then Paul, knowing that vvv some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, vvv “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, [the] son of a Pharisee. [It is] because of [my] hope in the resurrection of [the] dead [that] I am on trial.

As soon as… he had said [this], a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.

For… [the] Sadducees say [that] there is neither a resurrection nor angels nor spirits, but [the] Pharisees acknowledge them all.

- A great clamor arose, and some scribes from the party of the Pharisees got up [and] contended sharply…, “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?
δὲ μεγάλη κραυγὴ Ἐγένετο καὶ τινὲς τῶν γραμματέων τοῦ μέρους τῶν Φαρισαίων ἀναστάντες διεμάχοντο λέγοντες εὑρίσκομεν Οὐδὲν κακὸν ἐν τούτῳ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ δὲ εἰ πνεῦμα ἢ ἄγγελος ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ de megalē kraugē Egeneto kai tines tōn grammateōn tou merous tōn Pharisaiōn anastantes diemachonto legontes heuriskomen Ouden kakon en toutō tō anthrōpō de ei pneuma ē angelos elalēsen autō — NA/TR · 9

- [The] dispute grew so violent [that] the commander was afraid… vvv they would tear Paul to pieces… He ordered the soldiers to go down [and] remove him by force… and bring [him] into the barracks.
δὲ στάσεως γινομένης πολλῆς ὁ χιλίαρχος φοβηθεὶς μὴ ὑπ’ αὐτῶν διασπασθῇ ὁ Παῦλος ἐκέλευσεν τὸ στράτευμα καταβὰν ἁρπάσαι αὐτὸν ἐκ αὐτῶν μέσου τε ἄγειν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν de staseōs ginomenēs pollēs ho chiliarchos phobētheis mē hyp’ autōn diaspasthē ho Paulos ekeleusen to strateuma kataban harpasai auton ek autōn mesou te agein eis tēn parembolēn — NA/TR · 10

- The following night the Lord stood near [Paul] [and] said, “Take courage! As you have testified about Me in Jerusalem, so also you must testify in Rome.
δὲ Τῇ ἐπιούσῃ νυκτὶ ὁ Κύριος ἐπιστὰς αὐτῷ εἶπεν Θάρσει γὰρ ὡς διεμαρτύρω τὰ περὶ ἐμοῦ εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ οὕτω καὶ σε δεῖ μαρτυρῆσαι εἰς Ῥώμην de Tē epiousē nykti ho Kyrios epistas autō eipen Tharsei gar hōs diemartyrō ta peri emou eis Ierousalēm houtō kai se dei martyrēsai eis Rhōmēn — NA/TR · 11
The Plot to Kill Paul

- When daylight came…, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath… not to eat [or] drink until… they had killed Paul.
δὲ Γενομένης ἡμέρας οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ποιήσαντες συστροφὴν ἀνεθεμάτισαν ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες μήτε φαγεῖν μήτε πιεῖν ἕως οὗ ἀποκτείνωσιν τὸν Παῦλον de Genomenēs hēmeras hoi Ioudaioi poiēsantes systrophēn anethematisan heautous legontes mēte phagein mēte piein heōs hou apokteinōsin ton Paulon — NA/TR · 12

- More than forty [of them] were involved in this plot.

They went to the chief priests and elders [and] said, “We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath [not] to eat [anything] until… we have killed Paul.
οἵτινες προσελθόντες τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις εἶπαν ἀνεθεματίσαμεν ἑαυτοὺς Ἀναθέματι γεύσασθαι μηδενὸς ἕως οὗ ἀποκτείνωμεν τὸν Παῦλον hoitines proselthontes tois archiereusin kai tois presbyterois eipan anethematisamen heautous Anathemati geusasthai mēdenos heōs hou apokteinōmen ton Paulon — NA/TR · 14

Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him down… to you on the pretext… of examining his case… more carefully. We are ready to kill him on the way…
νῦν οὖν ὑμεῖς σὺν τῷ συνεδρίῳ ἐμφανίσατε τῷ χιλιάρχῳ ὅπως καταγάγῃ αὐτὸν εἰς ὑμᾶς ὡς μέλλοντας διαγινώσκειν τὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ ἀκριβέστερον δὲ ἡμεῖς ἐσμεν ἕτοιμοί τοῦ ἀνελεῖν αὐτόν πρὸ αὐτὸν τοῦ ἐγγίσαι nyn oun hymeis syn tō synedriō emphanisate tō chiliarchō hopōs katagagē auton eis hymas hōs mellontas diaginōskein ta peri autou akribesteron de hēmeis esmen hetoimoi tou anelein auton pro auton tou engisai — NA/TR · 15

But [when] the son of Paul’s sister heard about the plot, he went… into the barracks [and] told Paul.

Then Paul called one of the centurions [and] said, “Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him.
δὲ ὁ Παῦλος προσκαλεσάμενος ἕνα τῶν ἑκατονταρχῶν ἔφη ἄπαγε τοῦτον Τὸν νεανίαν πρὸς τὸν χιλίαρχον γὰρ ἔχει τι ἀπαγγεῖλαί αὐτῷ de ho Paulos proskalesamenos hena tōn hekatontarchōn ephē apage touton Ton neanian pros ton chiliarchon gar echei ti apangeilai autō — NA/TR · 17

So [the centurion] took him… to the commander and said, “Paul the prisoner sent [and] asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.
οὖν μὲν Ὁ παραλαβὼν αὐτὸν ἤγαγεν πρὸς τὸν χιλίαρχον καὶ φησίν Παῦλος Ὁ δέσμιος προσκαλεσάμενός ἠρώτησεν με ἀγαγεῖν τοῦτον τὸν νεανίσκον πρὸς σέ ἔχοντά τι λαλῆσαί σοι oun men Ho paralabōn auton ēgagen pros ton chiliarchon kai phēsin Paulos Ho desmios proskalesamenos ērōtēsen me agagein touton ton neaniskon pros se echonta ti lalēsai soi — NA/TR · 18

- The commander took [the young man] by the hand, drew [him] vvv aside, and asked, “What vvv vvv do you need to tell me?
δὲ ὁ χιλίαρχος Ἐπιλαβόμενος αὐτοῦ τῆς χειρὸς καὶ ἀναχωρήσας κατ’ ἰδίαν ἐπυνθάνετο Τί ἐστιν ὃ ἔχεις ἀπαγγεῖλαί μοι de ho chiliarchos Epilabomenos autou tēs cheiros kai anachōrēsas kat’ idian epynthaneto Ti estin ho echeis apangeilai moi — NA/TR · 19

- He answered, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul to the Sanhedrin tomorrow on the pretext… of acquiring more information… about him.
δὲ Εἶπεν ὅτι Οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι συνέθεντο τοῦ ἐρωτῆσαί σε ὅπως καταγάγῃς τὸν Παῦλον εἰς τὸ συνέδριον αὔριον ὡς μέλλον πυνθάνεσθαι ἀκριβέστερον τι περὶ αὐτοῦ de Eipen hoti Hoi Ioudaioi synethento tou erōtēsai se hopōs katagagēs ton Paulon eis to synedrion aurion hōs mellon pynthanesthai akribesteron ti peri autou — NA/TR · 20

- {Do} not {let} them persuade you, because more than forty - men are waiting to ambush him. [They] have bound themselves with an oath… not to eat [or] drink until… they have killed him; they are ready now, awaiting vvv your consent.
οὖν μὴ αὐτοῖς πεισθῇς σὺ γὰρ πλείους τεσσεράκοντα ἐξ αὐτῶν ἄνδρες ἐνεδρεύουσιν αὐτὸν οἵτινες ἀνεθεμάτισαν ἑαυτοὺς μήτε φαγεῖν μήτε πιεῖν ἕως οὗ ἀνέλωσιν αὐτόν καὶ εἰσιν ἕτοιμοι νῦν προσδεχόμενοι τὴν ἀπὸ σοῦ ἐπαγγελίαν oun mē autois peisthēs sy gar pleious tesserakonta ex autōn andres enedreuousin auton hoitines anethematisan heautous mēte phagein mēte piein heōs hou anelōsin auton kai eisin hetoimoi nyn prosdechomenoi tēn apo sou epangelian — NA/TR · 21

So the commander dismissed the young man and instructed [him], “Do not tell [anyone] that you have reported this to me.

Paul Sent to Felix

Then he called two of [his] centurions [and] said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea in the third hour of the night.

- Provide mounts [for] Paul to take [him] safely to Governor Felix.

[And] he wrote the following - letter:

This man was seized by the Jews, and they were about to kill [him] when I came with [my] troops to rescue [him]. For I had learned that he is a Roman citizen,

and since I wanted to understand [their] charges - [against] him, I brought [him] down to their Sanhedrin.

- I found that the accusation involved questions [about] their [own] law, but there was no charge worthy of death or imprisonment.

[When] I was informed that there was a plot against the man, I sent [him] to you at once. vvv I also instructed [his] accusers to present [their case] against him before you.

So the soldiers vvv vvv followed their orders… [and] brought… Paul by night to Antipatris.

- The next day they returned to the barracks [and] let the horsemen go on with him.

[When the horsemen] arrived in Caesarea, they delivered the letter to the governor and presented Paul to him.

- [The governor] read [the letter] and asked what province [Paul] was from. Learning that [he was] from Cilicia,

he said, “I will hear your case… when your accusers arrive -. Then he ordered that [Paul] be kept under guard in - Herod’s Praetorium.
