Chapter 24
Tertullus Prosecutes Paul

- Five days later the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and a lawyer [named] Tertullus, who presented to the governor {their case} against Paul.
δὲ πέντε ἡμέρας Μετὰ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς Ἁνανίας κατέβη μετὰ τινῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ τινός ῥήτορος Τερτύλλου οἵτινες ἐνεφάνισαν τῷ ἡγεμόνι κατὰ τοῦ Παύλου de pente hēmeras Meta ho archiereus Hananias katebē meta tinōn presbyterōn kai tinos rhētoros Tertyllou hoitines enephanisan tō hēgemoni kata tou Paulou — NA/TR · 1

[When] [Paul] had been called in, Tertullus opened the prosecution -: “Because of you, we have enjoyed a lasting peace, and - your foresight has brought improvements to this nation.
δὲ αὐτοῦ Κληθέντος ὁ Τέρτυλλος ἤρξατο κατηγορεῖν λέγων διὰ σοῦ τυγχάνοντες Πολλῆς εἰρήνης καὶ διὰ τῆς σῆς προνοίας γινομένων διορθωμάτων τούτῳ τῷ ἔθνει de autou Klēthentos ho Tertyllos ērxato katēgorein legōn dia sou tynchanontes Pollēs eirēnēs kai dia tēs sēs pronoias ginomenōn diorthōmatōn toutō tō ethnei — NA/TR · 2

- In every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge [this] with all gratitude.
τε πάντῃ καὶ πανταχοῦ κράτιστε Φῆλιξ ἀποδεχόμεθα μετὰ πάσης εὐχαριστίας te pantē kai pantachou kratiste Phēlix apodechometha meta pasēs eucharistias — NA/TR · 3

But in order not to delay you any further, I beg - your indulgence to hear us briefly.
δὲ ἵνα μὴ ἐνκόπτω σε ἐπὶ πλεῖόν παρακαλῶ σε τῇ σῇ ἐπιεικείᾳ ἀκοῦσαί ἡμῶν συντόμως de hina mē enkoptō se epi pleion parakalō se tē sē epieikeia akousai hēmōn syntomōs — NA/TR · 4

- We have found this man [to be] a pestilence, stirring up dissension among the Jews all over the world. [He is] a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes,
γὰρ Εὑρόντες τοῦτον τὸν ἄνδρα λοιμὸν καὶ κινοῦντα στάσεις πᾶσιν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις τοῖς κατὰ τὴν οἰκουμένην τε πρωτοστάτην τῆς αἱρέσεως τῶν Ναζωραίων gar Heurontes touton ton andra loimon kai kinounta staseis pasin tois Ioudaiois tois kata tēn oikoumenēn te prōtostatēn tēs haireseōs tōn Nazōraiōn — NA/TR · 5

[and he] even tried to desecrate the temple; [so] we seized [him].
ὃς καὶ ἐπείρασεν βεβηλῶσαι τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ ἐκρατήσαμεν ὃν hos kai epeirasen bebēlōsai to hieron kai ekratēsamen hon — NA/TR · 6

By examining him yourself, you will be able to learn [the truth] about all… our charges [against] him.

- The Jews vvv concurred, asserting that these [charges] were true.

Paul’s Defense to Felix

[When] the governor motioned for [Paul] to speak, [he] began his response: “Knowing that you have been a judge over this nation for many years, I gladly make my defense…
τε τοῦ ἡγεμόνος νεύσαντος αὐτῷ λέγειν ὁ Παῦλος Ἀπεκρίθη ἐπιστάμενος σε ὄντα κριτὴν τῷ τούτῳ ἔθνει Ἐκ πολλῶν ἐτῶν ἀπολογοῦμαι εὐθύμως τὰ περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ te tou hēgemonos neusantos autō legein ho Paulos Apekrithē epistamenos se onta kritēn tō toutō ethnei Ek pollōn etōn apologoumai euthymōs ta peri emautou — NA/TR · 10

You can verify {for yourself} that no - more than twelve days ago… I went up to Jerusalem to worship.
σου δυναμένου ἐπιγνῶναι ὅτι οὐ εἰσίν μοι πλείους δώδεκα ἡμέραι ἀφ’ ἧς ἀνέβην εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ προσκυνήσων sou dynamenou epignōnai hoti ou eisin moi pleious dōdeka hēmerai aph’ hēs anebēn eis Ierousalēm proskynēsōn — NA/TR · 11

Yet [my accusers] did not find me debating with anyone in the temple or riling up… a crowd in the synagogues [or] in the city.
καὶ εὗρόν με διαλεγόμενον πρός τινα οὔτε ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οὔτε ἢ ποιοῦντα ἐπίστασιν ὄχλου ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς οὔτε κατὰ τὴν πόλιν kai heuron me dialegomenon pros tina oute en tō hierō oute ē poiounta epistasin ochlou en tais synagōgais oute kata tēn polin — NA/TR · 12

Nor can they prove to you [any of] vvv vvv their charges against me.

I do confess to you, however, that I worship the God of our fathers according to the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets,
Ὁμολογῶ τοῦτό σοι δὲ ὅτι οὕτως λατρεύω τῷ Θεῷ πατρῴῳ κατὰ τὴν Ὁδὸν ἣν λέγουσιν αἵρεσιν πιστεύων πᾶσι τοῖς κατὰ τὸν νόμον καὶ τοῖς γεγραμμένοις ἐν τοῖς προφήταις Homologō touto soi de hoti houtōs latreuō tō Theō patrōō kata tēn Hodon hēn legousin hairesin pisteuōn pasi tois kata ton nomon kai tois gegrammenois en tois prophētais — NA/TR · 14

[and] I have [the same] hope in God that they themselves cherish, [that] there will be a resurrection of both [the] righteous and [the] wicked.

In this [hope], vvv I strive always… to maintain a clear conscience before God and man.

After several years, then, I returned [ to Jerusalem ] to bring alms to my people and to present offerings.

At the time they found me in the temple, I was ceremonially clean vvv [and] was not {inciting} [a] crowd [or] vvv an uproar. But [there are] some Jews from [the province of] Asia
ἐν αἷς εὗρόν με ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἡγνισμένον οὐ μετὰ ὄχλου οὐδὲ μετὰ θορύβου δὲ τινὲς Ἰουδαῖοι ἀπὸ τῆς Ἀσίας en hais heuron me en tō hierō hēgnismenon ou meta ochlou oude meta thorybou de tines Ioudaioi apo tēs Asias — NA/TR · 18

who ought to appear before you and bring charges, if they have anything against me.
οὓς ἔδει παρεῖναι ἐπὶ σοῦ καὶ κατηγορεῖν εἴ ἔχοιεν τι πρὸς ἐμέ hous edei pareinai epi sou kai katēgorein ei echoien ti pros eme — NA/TR · 19

Otherwise…, let [these men] state for themselves any crime they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin,
ἢ οὗτοι εἰπάτωσαν αὐτοὶ τί ἀδίκημα εὗρον μου στάντος ἐπὶ τοῦ συνεδρίου ē houtoi eipatōsan autoi ti adikēma heuron mou stantos epi tou synedriou — NA/TR · 20

unless [it was]… this one thing I called out as I stood in their [presence] -: ‘[It is] concerning [the] resurrection of [the] dead [that] I am on trial before you today.
ἢ περὶ ταύτης μιᾶς φωνῆς ἧς ἐκέκραξα ἑστὼς ἐν αὐτοῖς ὅτι Περὶ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν ἐγὼ κρίνομαι ἐφ’ ὑμῶν σήμερον ē peri tautēs mias phōnēs hēs ekekraxa hestōs en autois hoti Peri anastaseōs nekrōn egō krinomai eph’ hymōn sēmeron — NA/TR · 21
The Verdict Postponed

Then Felix, vvv who was well informed about the Way, adjourned the hearing… [and] said, “When Lysias the commander comes, I will decide vvv vvv your case.
δὲ ὁ Φῆλιξ ἀκριβέστερον εἰδὼς τὰ περὶ τῆς Ὁδοῦ Ἀνεβάλετο αὐτοὺς εἴπας Ὅταν Λυσίας ὁ χιλίαρχος καταβῇ διαγνώσομαι τὰ καθ’ ὑμᾶς de ho Phēlix akribesteron eidōs ta peri tēs Hodou Anebaleto autous eipas Hotan Lysias ho chiliarchos katabē diagnōsomai ta kath’ hymas — NA/TR · 22

He ordered the centurion to keep [Paul] under guard…, [but] to allow him some freedom and vvv permit his [friends] to minister to his [needs].

After vvv several days, Felix returned with [his] wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess. He sent for Paul and listened to him [speak] about faith in Christ Jesus.

[As] [Paul] expounded on righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened [and] said, “You may go… for now. [When] I find the time, I will call for you.

At the same time…, he was hoping that - Paul would offer him a bribe. So he sent for [Paul] frequently [and] talked with him.

[After] two years had passed, Felix vvv was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And wishing to do the Jews a favor…, Felix left Paul in prison.
